Way, Way Past Cool!

We're back to the silly stuff this issue. Really, any time you see Mike Gallagher or Angelo DeCesare's name on something you can kind of assume it's gonna be back to the silly episodic stuff. Sonic and co. are playing in the water to beat the summer heat, with Sonic running on top of the water at high speeds to create a spray. It's kind of cool that the comics predicted this ability of his years before the games ever implemented it. We can also assume that since it's summer, that half a year has passed since the Christmas special back in StH #6. Suddenly a blizzard moves in from nowhere, and the area becomes a freezing snowscape with temperatures well below zero.

Robotnik, it turns out, has created a weather-altering device so that he can search out any heat signatures that the Freedom Fighters emit, and capture them. The heroes take refuge in a nearby cave, but are still in danger of freezing to death until a group of arctic Mobians discovers them and leads them down to warmer caves.

With the help of this new group, they prepare for combat in the snow and emerge one week later, just as Robotnik is about to celebrate their suspected demise, ready for battle. Things are looking up as they use the snow in a cobbled-together catapult, only for Snively to sneak up from behind and freeze them solid. Amusingly, Sonic himself lampshades comic characters' tendency to describe in plain terms what is happening to them on panel.

Just as they're about to be dragged back to Robotnik on ice, their newfound arctic friends arrive to fight Snively and the swatbots. Sonic is cut free, and at his request, loaded into the catapult without even being entirely freed from the ice first, resulting in this glorious panel. Seriously, I know I say that to a lot of panels but this one just has me giggling like an idiot.

The impact allows Sonic to break free and destroy the weather machine, returning Mobius back to normal, and thus the arctic Mobians depart for home, inspired by the Freedom Fighters' example to, well, fight for freedom themselves.

Oh hey, wow, this is actually the first issue Bunnie has appeared in since… *checks* StH #23, huh. I still don't know why she gets left out of so many of these early issues, honestly. I mean, I am a little bit biased considering she's one of my favorite Archie characters, but still.

In this story, Robotnik is pursuing the Freedom Fighters up a mountain, but unfortunately, Sonic has managed to sprain his ankle, and can't run the way he normally can. That's actually an incredibly crippling injury for someone who relies on their speed to fight, and certainly this could have gone in a much more serious and intense direction, but this is Angelo we're talking about. Anyway, they stumble upon an old wooden fortress on the mountain, with old metal cannons inside. Unfortunately they're not exactly operational due to their age, and Robotnik and Snively are in hot pursuit of them up the mountain, with Robotnik hissing like some kind of insane snake. Seriously, what the hell man?

Even though Bunnie is the only real fighter left, she wouldn't be strong enough to face Robotnik's forces all on her own. Sonic then comes up with an idea, and commissions Rotor to make her a suit of heavy metal from the cannons, a suit which Robotnik amusingly disdains because of its material's name (apparently he has terrible taste in music - or rather, no taste at all). Bunnie then proceeds to Naruto run at the attacking swatbots, bowling them over with her head while spouting puns. Great plan, Bunnie!

Amazingly, this plan works, and after tricking Robotnik into driving his bus through the wooden wall of the fortress and plummeting to the bottom of the mountain, everyone celebrates her victory. Hopefully Sonic's sprain heals before the next issue!

I am excited and dreading the day they add Malfurion to the films. Because he’s either going to look awesome or fuckin terribly hilarious (more likely tbh) and I can’t wait. (SHIT...motion capture behind the scene shit is so great)
