Bamini Ring Game

Last weekend I went to a gathering at a lake house. When I got there, I saw a bunch of kids gathered around playing a game called the bamini ring toss. The concept of the game is to form some type of strategy, and to have the ring end up landing on the hook. Sounds easy, right? Well, let me tell you that it was a challenge. Every time I grabbed the ring I tried different strategies, and although I may have been unsuccessful multiple times I was still having a fun time. The young boy playing beside us had been playing all day. He struggled as I did but each time he got one he stated loudly how many times he had been successful. He did not give up until he finally reached 100 times. Finally, he let the other children have a turn. This reminded me of element calculability in Mcdonaldization. The boy was mainly focused on the quantity of times he was successful instead of the quality. If he had focused on his technique and skill maybe he would have reached 100 sooner. Maybe his obsession with reaching a certain number took away from the enjoyment of the game for him and his peers.  Of course, I’m not going to sit here and criticize a young boy playing a game, but it did dawn on me that these types of behaviors are learned behaviors. The boy would not have announced his number if he didn’t think the adults around him would be impressed by the quantity.
