Alberta Health Services is investigating after an undocumented woman says she was denied an emergency C-section at an Edmonton hospital last month.
Perla Estrada, 35, said a doctor told her to go to the hospital on March 25 after an ultrasound revealed she had low amniotic fluid and needed a C-section.
She said at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, she was told she had to pay $5,000 upfront for the procedure and that no doctor there would see her unless she did so.
As an undocumented person without medical insurance, Estrada said she expected to pay for the cost of her hospital care after the birth, but she did not have enough money to pay the amount upfront.
She later went to the Misericordia Community Hospital, where she had the C-section and gave birth to her daughter Violet. [...]

Canada's most infamous Nazi these days had an endowment at the University of Alberta. As Jeremy Appel points out, U of A's Chancellor from 1982 to 1986, Peter Savaryn, was a Ukrainian SS veteran. Savaryn co-founded the U of A's "Canadian Institute for Ukrainian Studies" which has been a centre of fascistic historical revisionism since the 1970s.
The program was an incubation chamber for SS veterans and their offspring and sympathisers. These U of A scholars fought against claims of Ukrainian SS crimes against humanity in the mid-1980s during the Deschenes Commission investigation into Nazi war criminals. The political purpose was to deflect and deny Ukrainian fascism and its role in the Holocaust, while positioning Ukrainian Nationalists as caught between the Nazis and Soviets, instead of being fascist allies and Holocaust collaborators. Their greatest success in Canada was pushing the most extreme interpretation of the 'Holodomor' (Ukraine's 1932-33 famine) as a deliberate genocide against Ukrainians by Stalin and the Soviet Union. This is not to deny the mass deaths in that period, but minimizing of the role of Ukrainian fascists in the Holocaust while accentuating their own victimization is a deliberate political strategy -- one that was about asserting far right intellectual hegemony over the Ukrainian community in Canada as much as possible. As a descendent of Ukrainian-Canadians myself, I'm very aware of how successful this effort has been.
As Nazis, they buried the truth, lied to their children and grandchildren, and advanced a new post-Soviet Ukrainian nationalism on fascist foundations and myths. The U of A's role in this was instrumental.

Alberta invites 150 applicants in a draw on 16th June - Canada Immigration News
Alberta welcomed 150 Express Entry applicants to apply for a provincial nomination on June 16, 2022. Candidates were asked to apply for the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program with an Express Entry score of at least 306 points (AINP).
The CRS score decreased from the previous draw, which was held on May 19th, 2022, and had a CRS score of 382.
There are approximately 1,100 Alberta Opportunity Stream applications and 575 expressions of interest in the Alberta Express Entry pool.
Under the Alberta Express Entry stream, invited candidates may be qualified for a provincial nomination. They will be one step closer to obtaining permanent residence in Canada if they receive the nomination. Under the Provincial Nominee Program, provincial nominees may submit an application to the federal government for immigration to Canada (PNP). Candidates seeking permanent residency who have received provincial nominations rise to the top of the pool and are more likely to be offered an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada limits the number of nominations it can make to the Alberta Immigration Nominee Program (AINP) each year (IRCC). The IRCC submitted 6,250 nominations for Alberta for the year 2021.
The AINP has approved each of the 6,250 confirmations for 2021. The AINP said it will keep reviewing the applications that are currently in the queue, but no new certificates will be given out until January 2022.
On its progress, the AINP doesn't provide any updates.
How to enter the country through the Express Entry stream in Alberta?
Making an Express Entry profile is the first step in the Alberta Express Entry stream of immigration.
The three Federal High Skilled programs—Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program, and Federal Skilled Trades Program—all use Express Entry as their application management system.
You will receive a score based on the Comprehensive Ranking System if you are qualified for Express Entry (CRS). You receive points based on your age, level of schooling, employment history, and proficiency in either French or English, among other things.
The winners of the Express Entry lotteries held by IRCC are invited to submit applications for permanent residency.
Without a provincial nomination, it is possible to apply for immigration using the Express Entry system. Express Entry applicants with lower CRS scores have the chance to receive an immediate 600-point award through the PNP.

Who is qualified for the Express Entry Stream in Alberta?
In order to apply for the Alberta Express Entry stream, you must have experience in a qualifying occupation.
The AINP presents a list of occupations that are not qualified for the stream rather than a list of occupations that are. Many people who apply through this stream hold jobs as cooks, transport truck drivers, and supervisors of food services, among other things. According to the provincial government website, the volume of submissions means it may take longer to process these applications.
Your chances of getting nominated are increased by things like work experience, Canadian education, and job offers in Alberta. Having a parent, child, or sibling who already resides in Alberta is also advantageous.
It goes without saying that you must also satisfy the Express Entry eligibility standards. Your CRS score must be at least 300 to be taken into consideration. If you indicated in your profile that you are interested in relocating permanently to Alberta, you might get an invitation known as a "Notification of Interest."
What takes place after I get the NOI?
You submit an application for an Alberta provincial nomination.
If you receive the nomination, your CRS score will increase by 600 points. You can then submit an application for Canadian immigration after receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) from a later Express Entry draw.

An Edmonton woman is set to be removed from Canada next month because her student visa application contained a fraudulent admissions letter — even though Canadian authorities believe she didn't know it was fake.
Karamjeet Kaur and her lawyer hope an application for permanent residency based on humanitarian and compassionate grounds will be processed before her scheduled removal date of May 29th.
"She's broken right now," her lawyer Manraj Sidhu said Thursday.
"She is going to be sent back to the same society where will she will be just forced to confine herself to the vicinity of her house. That's what she did for 18 or 20 years of her life because she was ridiculed, harassed, mocked whenever she stepped out of the house because of her disability."
