hey!! you!!! <3 this is the official tobin's plans for music updates post!! anxiously awaited i know. anyways...

first big news:

I AM DONE WRITING POLARIS!!!!

crazy i know. polaris was essientially written just to see if i even could write an album. it was also specifically written to sound good sung live to an accoustic guitar (or occasional ukulele) so i wouldn't have to learn production and could just learn to write music. and i think it's pretty alright for a first attempt at writing music (and making a cohesive album).

however, when i sit down to write music currently, i can't do it within the constraint of that album. which at first i thought was writer's block, but i've recently realized is actually just because... polaris is done. i have nothing more to write for that project. nothing more to add to that story. which is fucking awesome. i wrote an album. that's so cool??

so now...

what's going to happen with polaris?

the plan is to record each song a little more professionally than the demos posted on tumblr, get some sort of album cover and name to release the songs under, and put them onto youtube. probably soundcloud also, and maybe bandcamp (i've heard about it but never used it myself), but not spotify or apple music or anything like that.

the timeline for this is vaguely "sometime in 2022" at the moment, but will likely come before that (i like to set the bar low and pleasantly surprise myself). the songs that aren't linked in the polaris masterpost probably won't be shared until i release them on youtube simply because i'm lazy.

what comes next?

now that i know i CAN write music (and how to), it's time to learn production (and get things like a mic LMAOOO)

polaris's style (music, type of lyrics, the way i handled the album) were very much inspired by the album give me a minute by lizzy mcalpine. the next style of music i really want to conquer is that of the album you and your friends by peach pit.

if all goes according to plan, that will be recorded slightly more professionally, hopefully with more professional equipment (though still out of my bedroom :pensive:). not trying to jinx it but my hope is for that album to be put under a different name and on spotify/apple music/etc, not just youtube and soundcloud etc.

i am SO hyped to see where my music goes. thank you to everyone who's supported polaris the past few months, im glad you guys have enjoyed it :D excited to put it on youtube and be done with it tho lmao i have greener pastures to attend to

so i was watching the new mlp movie and with kids movies and kids media in general, one thing i like to do as an adult is try to view it from the perspective of: “would i like this if i was a kid” ‘cause like, obviously i also think about if adult me likes it too or if i think its well made but a kids movie is made for kids so it should be appealing to them first and foremost right? in my opinion at least

anyway yeah i always like to keep in the back of my mind the opinions of my 10 year old self while watching childrens movies but like also. if i was 3rd grader in 2021 and i saw A New Generation i absolutely would have watched this movie a lot but specifically so i could play out a way more serious and melodramatic high stakes version of the story and worldbuilding with my toys as i was watching. i would have made the antagonist some big menacing shadowy king of whatever and there would be at least 4 main character death fakeouts (possibly an actually death but maybe they got brought back through the magic of pokemon tears or something). the main character would have been replaced with a talking cat with fairy wings (dont worry about it) who solves all the problems and gets all the magic powers ever.

so maybe i should take my 10 year old self’s opinions with a grain of salt? or maybe that kid was right. maybe that is what childrens media should be like

#things like this rarely have like top quality production and songwriting because like... #you wanna save that stuff for your actual comebacks lol #but this is pretty cool #the instrumental anyway #the vocals and lyrics probably arent anything truly remarkable #but the song production is actually really cool. it's got that synthwavey sound that ladida kind of had #though like... brighter of course lol. more uplifting #and yeah it's the same producers who wrote every one of their title tracks starting from adios #i checked #hayley aitken and ollipop or whatever. theyve done lots of other kpop songs too like for red velvet and loona and stuff #anyway i just wasnt expecting the sound of the instrumental in this like special unicef ad campaign song to be so like... rich #like rich in the food sense haha. this is a thick and dense sounding synth bass-y instrumental #hell yeah #i probably wont listen to this song much at all though #cause if im looking for that sound then there are other songs i can listen to haha but yeah #it was a pleasant surprise anyway #i feel like those producers struggled to know what to do with everglow after taking the reins as the main producers initially #because bon bon chocolat was by melanie fontana (and others) #and adios and dun dun were them finding what worked. i like both of those songs but like... in a way they feel like prototypes now #cause ladida and first both blow them out of the water imo #ladida is really different of course but... first feels like the complete form of what adios and dun dun were trying to be #and so like... even in this little ad campaign song... it just feels like they really know what they want everglow to sound like #and im glad haha
