Please talk more about your DND character what's her class how fucked up is she would she be the voice of reason or the one who needs to be watched at all times
YOU HAVE OPENED PANDORA'S BOX AND THERE IS NO SHUTTING IT! buckle up for an ESSAY, because I have not stopped thinking about Kit.
so Kit is a half-elf ranger with absolutely no tragic backstory. they were adopted by 2 human parents in a mostly human town, but everyone is well-meaning about the elf thing, if occasionally a bit insensitive. They spend most of their time in the woods around the town, only coming in to visit their family for a few days every few weeks. They mostly just live off the land, but every once in a while they take down some beast that could cause the town a few problems. Nothing major, just the fantasy equivalent of an injured bear rooting through garbage.
The problem is. Through no fault of Kit's, it was a little their fault but whatever the town is under the impression that Kit is valiantly battling countless monsters on the town's behalf. Just constantly putting their life on the line. And they keep giving Kit awards! They gave their family a house! And now Kit is in FAR too far to just admit the truth!
So literally the only thing to do is to set out in search of some ACTUAL adventure. Once they have some good experience, they can come back and it will all be fine. This is a foolproof plan.
Kit, to state it bluntly, is an enthusiastic, well-meaning dumbass. They would be a thembo if they weren't so scrawny and grubby and half-feral. Kit's actually pretty surprisingly wise, though. They're not Eating The Mystery Food because they're ignorant of the consequences, they're Eating The Mystery Food because the consequence of severe gastrointestinal distress is worth the experience and knowledge gained. (Not to mention the fact that they were DARED to eat it!) So to answer your question: Kit SHOULD be watched at all times, but most of the time someone tries to stop them from making a Questionable Decision Kit makes the case for being allowed to do it anyways so thoroughly that the responsible adult is just like, "fine if you really want to knock yourself out i guess." (This is their most camp counselor trait, by the way.)
Underneath their brash confidence, though, Kit is actually pretty unsure. They're only like 19, and they would rather stay in the forest around their town. They're really only venturing out because this is the only solution they can see.
I'm definitely conscious of the fact that a DnD character should be a good team player, so I'm trying not to make them too much of a main character. I think I'll be okay as long as I don't try to make their impulsivity and teenage confidence the center of every interaction. (I was feeling like maybe the whole character was too main-character-y and I just needed to start over, but then i realized i only felt that way because Kit is EXACTLY the kind of character I would obsess over and probably everyone else feels this way about THEIR characters and we should all be fine as long as we play collaboratively.)
