mojo dojo casa house
Howdy folks! Sorry for the delay, I was, uhhhh covering the Tour de France. Anyway, I'm back in Chicago which means this blog has returned to the Chicago suburbs. I'm sure you've all seen Barbie at this point so this 2019 not-so-dream house will come as a pleasant (?) surprise.
Tumblr media
Yeah. So this $2.4 million, 7 bed, 8.5+ bath house is over 15,000 square feet and let me be frank: that square footage is not allocated in any kind of efficient or rational manner. It's just kind of there, like a suburban Ramada Inn banquet hall. You think that by reading this you are prepared for this, but no, you are not.
Tumblr media
Scale (especially the human one) is unfathomable to the people who built this house. They must have some kind of rare spatial reasoning problem where they perceive themselves to be the size of at least a sedan, maybe a small aircraft. Also as you can see they only know of the existence of a single color.
Tumblr media
Ok, but if you were eating a single bowl of cereal alone where would you sit? Personally I am a head of the table type person but I understand that others might be more discreet.
Tumblr media
It is undeniable that they put the "great" in great room. You could race bicycles in here. Do roller derby. If you gave this space to three anarchists you would have a functioning bookshop and small press in about a week.
Tumblr media
The island bit is so funny. It's literally so far away it's hard to get them in the same image. It is the most functionally useless space ever. You need to walk half a mile to get from the island to the sink or stove.
Tumblr media
Of course, every McMansion has a room just for television (if not more than one room) and yet this house fails even to execute that in a way that matters. Honestly impressive.
Tumblr media
The rug placement here is physical comedy. Like, they know they messed up.
Tumblr media
Bling had a weird second incarnation in the 2010s HomeGoods scene. Few talk about this.
Tumblr media
Honestly I think they should have scrapped all of this and built a bowling alley or maybe a hockey rink. Basketball court. A space this grand is wasted on sports of the table variety.
You would also think that seeing the rear exterior of this house would help to rationalize how it's planned but:
Tumblr media
Not really.
Anyways, thanks for coming along for another edition of McMansion Hell. I'll be back to regular posting schedule now that the summer is over so keep your eyes peeled for more of the greatest houses to ever exist. Be sure to check the Patreon for today's bonus posts.
Also P.S. - I'm the architecture critic for The Nation now, so check that out, too!
If you like this post and want more like it, support McMansion Hell on Patreon for as little as $1/month for access to great bonus content including a discord server, extra posts, and livestreams.
Not into recurring payments? Try the tip jar, because media work is especially recession-vulnerable.

Jean-André-Ignace, Soubry 1705/1774
Tumblr media
This proud young man who poses in Paris in front of the easel of Nicolas de LARGILLIÈRE 1656/1746, has just returned at the age of 24 from his grand tour, with the obligatory English, Dutch and finally Italian passages. From this trip, he brought back a number of memories which would populate his cabinet of curiosities, famous at the time, and built up an important library of which his books were adorned with a printed bookplate.
Tumblr media
Jean-André-Ignace, Soubry 1705/1774, born in Lyon, last of 10 children, to a gilding merchant, Jacques Soubry, who “knew that a certain fortune was necessary in this world to defy the proud gaze of the rich”.
So following this advice, a bourgeois from Lyon, who became a lawyer in 1733, the enterprising and fortunate young man, bought the office of treasurer of France in the Lyon office in 1741.
Tumblr media
However, although he was not insensitive to the charms of a sex that he considered adorable", Jean-André as a teenager having an exceptional "spirit", for beauty, fine arts, ancient sculpture including he produced a volume of engravings and had no other adventures than with men.
Tumblr media
For his portrait, Jean-André wears a lace collared shirt under a gray silk vest worn with a silk velvet jacket. Expensive clothing even for the Lyonnais who specialize in weaving the most precious silk fabric.
A little young man's gallantry, he adds his embroidered coat, carelessly thrown over his shoulders.
Portrait sold for $587,000 in May 2019 on an estimate of $32/43,000
Wasn't Dad right when he said: "a certain amount of wealth is necessary in this world to defy the proud gaze of the rich" ?

NIGHTWISH's TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN: First Live Show After FLOOR JANSEN's Cancer Diagnosis 'Was Emotional For All Of Us'
Tumblr media
NIGHTWISH keyboardist and main songwriter Tuomas Holopainen spoke to Ireland's Overdrive about what it has been like for him and his bandmates to return to the road just weeks after singer Floor Jansen revealed her breast cancer diagnosis. "The first show of this [European tour] leg in Antwerp [Belgium on November 20] was just so emotional for all of us, but especially for Floor," he said. "It all came out during the song 'Sleeping Sun'. She couldn't sing the song towards the end, and she just broke down. It was a positive breakdown, if you know what I mean. It was just a huge release of so much anxiety and pressure that had been building up inside her. It was a culmination of beating cancer, finally do[ing] this tour, and [the fact] that her voice was good enough to do what she loves to do. All of that came out at the same time, and it's been wonderful ever since."
On November 18, Floor revealed that she was "cancer free" after undergoing surgery to have a tumor removed following a breast cancer diagnosis. At the time, she wrote on social media that "the surgery took everything cancerous out and it hasn't spread!"
Jansen went public with her diagnosis in October. At the time, she wrote: "The word cancer is a shocker. All that you found important in life before this diagnosis changes radically within minutes. Now I just want to be healthy again. I want to see my daughter grow into a woman; I want to live! And the scariest part of this diagnosis is that I thought I was healthy! I didn't feel the cancer, I didn't know it was there until I, as a 40+ woman, went to a standard mammogram checkup. Something many countries offer, for free even for the lucky ones. Had I not gone there, the tumor would have gone undetected. In a year from now this could have grown much bigger. The thought of that makes me share this story with you. A mammogram is lifesaving! It's uncomfortable and you might think that you won't have something in your breasts anyway but GO! And for the men reading this: remind your wife, girlfriend, mother, sister to go and get checked. Even without the luxury I as a western woman experience with free mammogram checkups: GO! Luckily, there are many organizations that offer information about self-detection if you do not have access or funds for a mammogram. If I might inspire you to take good care of yourself, then something good will come out of this cancer diagnosis."
Jansen made her live debut as the frontwoman of NIGHTWISH on October 1, 2012 at Showbox Sodo in Seattle, Washington following the abrupt departure of the band's lead singer of five years, Anette Olzon. Jansen officially joined NIGHTWISH in 2013.
As part of NIGHTWISH, Jansen landed two number one albums in Finland, and Top Five albums in Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.
Born in the Netherlands, Jansen joined her first band, one of the world's first symphonic metal bands, AFTER FOREVER, when she was only 16 years old. The group went on to release five albums from 2000 to 2007, before they broke up in 2009.
Jansen's next band, REVAMP, released two albums in 2010 and 2013, before she joined NIGHTWISH as a full-time member. NIGHTWISH's first album with Jansen as the lead singer was 2015's "Endless Forms Most Beautiful", which landed in Top 10s around the world. This was followed by 2020's "Human. :II: Nature." , which was also an international success.
Jansen has toured extensively with the band and appeared on three of NIGHTWISH's live albums "Showtime, Storytime", "Vehicle Of Spirit" and "Decades: Live In Buenos Aires".
In 2019, Jansen participated in the popular Dutch TV show "Beste Zangers" where she scored a big hit with "Phantom Of The Opera" together with Henk Poort. She was recognized with a Dutch Popprijs award — a prestigious accolade for artists that has made important contributions to Dutch music. In the same year, her first solo tour sold out in less than 24 hours.
Floor will release her debut solo album, "Paragon", on March 24. The LP contains "a diverse collection of pop-infused tracks and emotional ballads influenced by the sounds of her career," according to a press release.

Records of Professor William Jones: 2019
Before reading over the below notes of Professor Jones, it is recommended to revise his records from both 2001 and 2003.
Tuesday, November 27, 2018
Will,
I am absolutely delighted to hear that you, Catherine and Jacob will be spending your holiday in France next year. I am so excited at the thought of seeing you again, and getting to meet your beautiful wife and son.
I think Alice is excited about having a boy around her age about, even if she doesn’t really show it, but, well, you know how teenagers are!
Keep in touch and let me know what your plans are. Maybe I can be your tour guide around Paris!
Alice sends her regards, in those words.
Sylvie
I have not returned to Europe since those fateful months back in 2001. Admittedly, as much as I would have loved to return, time simply got away from me; with my teaching career, the engagement and marriage to my beautiful wife and then the birth of our son, I found no time for such sojourns to other countries, even in the name of furthering research in the field. I am grateful, at least in this small part, that this particular field is not one which is of great interest to others.
Although, yes, this is to be a holiday with my family and the chance to spend time with an old friend, I do hope there will be some time in which I can further my research into La Cour de la Lune. Much time has passed since my last visit, of course, and I have formulated new theories in regards to the uncovering of information. I can only hope Sylvie is enthusiastic of being of some help - and perhaps the young Alice, who has spent her entire life within the congregation, will have some insight that even her mother does not possess!
Sylvie,
Rest assured that I am just as delighted as you are about the thought of seeing you again. As soon as I know of our plans, I will send you an email with regards to them so as to not delay the process.
Catherine and Jacob also send their regards, not in those words.
Will
P.S. The thought has just struck me as to how much technology has evolved since our first contact. It is almost amazing that we still write to each other in a way that anyone would consider old fashioned now!
Monday, January 21, 2019
Catherine is not particularly delighted about my plans to research the occult while we spend our family vacation in France. How lucky I am to have such a wonderful and understanding wife, though! We have come to an understanding that I might spend some downtime on my research, as long as I spend most of the time with herself and Jacob. I am, of course, amicable to this proposal; if there is one thing more important than my research, it is spending time with my beautiful family.
Thursday, February 14, 2019
I must apologise for the quality of my writing in this entry, for my hands cannot stop shaking after having read the most recent letter I have received from Sylvie. I will allow the letter to do the talking, lest I fill the page with nonsensical scribblings.
Will,
I must apologise. I will not be able to accompany you, Catherine and Jacob when you come to visit in the coming months.
I have made the decision to give my life to Vh’thra on the next new moon, falling on the 6th of March.
I understand that you might be saddened by this news, but you needn’t worry. My soul will be back in the hands of Vh’thra, and one day I might be reborn anew.
Alice will remain well and safe. She is a young woman who can make her own choices, but I understand she will continue to live among the others in our congregation. Of course, I will support her no matter which path her life might take from the moment I am no longer with her.
There will be no need to mourn me; rather, celebrate that I am one with my dear Vh’thra once more.
I wish you all the best with your family, research and any endeavours the future might hold.
Sylvie
Wednesday, March 27, 2019
I never did respond to the correspondence Sylvie had sent.
The next letter I received was on this day, though it is in a markedly different hand than the letters which I had received before it.
Mr Jones,
I felt as though it was my responsibility to inform you that my mother, Sylvie Delecroix, sacrificed herself to Vh’thra some few hours ago on this day, the 6th of March, 2019.
If you wish to continue the correspondence you had with my mother with me instead, I will happily answer any queries you might have. Likewise, I have been informed of your impending visit to France and that I should meet you if you so desire. For the purposes of preparation, I will be using my mother’s email address. For anything which is not of an urgent nature, please continue to write.
I have taken and sent photos both for your research and as proof. I hope you find them useful.
Regards,
Ms Alice Delecroix
I feel violently ill doing so much as recounting the contents of the accompanying images.
The images were numerated so that I might view them in the correct order. Though I have included the images in this bundle, I implore anyone in their right mind to not view these images. I have provided written descriptions for those curious.
The first image depicts a semi-clothed, seated Sylvie. She is being marked by a robed figure in symbols which I have come to learn over the years represent various ideas and creatures which relate to La Cour de la Lune. These symbols in particular relate to Vh’thra, defined by their long and pointed shapes.
The second image, which is particularly close, depicts Sylvie with the same lack of clothing, now laid upon the stone table. Unlike sacrificed beasts I have been sent images of over the years, Sylvie’s hands and legs are unbound. It appears that a robed figure is carving markings into her skin with a sacrificial blade. Blood has already begun to pool to the surface of her skin.
The third image is taken from a distance, behind other members of the congregation. It appears that a hooded figure has the same sacrificial blade which had been used to carve into Sylvie’s skin high above his head. It’s difficult to tell, given the distance, but Sylvie doesn’t appear to be struggling or distressed.
In the fourth image, Alice seems to have gotten to the front of the crowd. The blade is lodged well between Sylvie’s ribs. Although he is hooded, part of the executioner’s face can be seen. He, just like Sylvie (who now smiles towards the camera, or rather, her daughter), appears to be at peace.
The fifth image, like the second, is taken closer. Alice’s finger has partially obscured the lens, but this is just as well - it means that I have been spared seeing a friend dismembered.
I cannot bring myself to respond to Alice’s letter tonight. How can a child remain so calm in the face of their only parent being taken from them, particularly of their own choice? How can she take photos of the acts, and do so well enough that they are not blurred or otherwise obscured (except for in one very lucky situation)?
Is this the toll spending one’s entire life in a cult takes?
Thursday, March 28, 2019
I still feel ill and my hands still shake, if that is not proven by this entry. Sleep evaded me last night, and in those small moments when I did begin to drift, the images I had viewed burned themselves into my mind once more.
Thankfully, Alice has asked for correspondence by email for the time being, sparing me the trouble of having to write coherently by hand at the very least.
I try not to think about how she can so casually use the email address of her deceased mother, particularly in the present day when it is so common for people to have addresses of their own.
Ms A. Delecroix -
I must specify the Ms Delecroix I write to, otherwise I will feel like I am speaking to a recently deceased friend -
I thank you for the notification of your mother’s passing. Under ordinary circumstances, I would say that I am sorry for your loss, but I understand that is not what your mother wanted, nor what you believe. I hope that her soul finds its place among us again soon.
I would also like to thank you for the photos you sent.
They are grotesque, but do they not aid me in my research?
Please see below for details of the holiday I will be taking to France along with my wife, Catherine, and my son, Jacob.
Not too long after I send this email do I receive a response back.
Mr Jones,
Please keep in mind what I said about emails being for urgent matters only. I might be young, but I do appreciate receiving and sending handwritten letters much more than a soulless email.
To bring an end to this line of conversation - do not waste your worry or your pity on my mother. I hope for her to be among us once more soon enough.
I look forward to meeting you in Paris next month.
Kind regards,
Ms Alice Delecroix
Though I am curious to meet the child Alice of whom I have heard so much, I swear that my heart is no longer beating in my chest.
I cannot help but fear the person I am soon to meet.

Weekly Writing and Reading Update
Hello I went blue-water kayaking for the first time in AGES (and the first time in my kayak) today and of course I pick a delightfully windy-ass day to do it, lolsob. I managed about 40 minutes and succeeded in not capsizing which was my only goal. I can't wait to do it again, just maybe on a calmer day (and with floats and maybe a spray skirt, but I have the floats on hand, at least). Also I am unbelievably, unspeakably tired.
Also I have still not quite made the time to watch Good Omens, I blame the Tour de France Femmes (avec Zwift iykyk), but now! today! I have to put my kayak back together (it's a folding kayak and is currently drying on my dinky patio) and then! FINALLY!
Of course I have a busy week this week and probably won't have time to watch Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday, but my goal is to finish the series Friday night so I have all weekend to write.
Okay Saturday at least, since I want to do a big hike on Sunday.
Also Worlds begins next weekend at least for the ones I want to watch/catch up on
Writing
Honestly nothing worth noting, I'd started a bit of indulgence but there's so much more to chew on. It feels apropos to note that I read like three spoilers and basically write a little one-shot in my head as I was falling asleep last night, so safe to say I'm back on my bullshit.
(I do really wish season 3 would come out during winter, I have...not so much time indoors right now when I'm not working, lol.)
(Am I thinking about where I was summer 2019 as opposed to now, and how much busier and richer my life is not in Seattle? Yes, but that is babbling for another time.)
Reading
I finished Big Swiss which is one of those books I ought to hate, but I was...not necessarily loving it, but definitely fascinated as hell with it. It's such a gross book, and Greta is so majestically self-destructive, I actually could not look away. Magnificent, 10/10 would watch barely-likeable protagonists fuck their own lives up again.
Also, not a book, but I finally read Blackmun's dissent in DeShaney v. Winnebago County, a landmark case that essentially determined that the government is not actually expected to protect you. (Skip noted segregationist Chief Justice William Rehnquist's ruling, but the Wikipedia article on the case breaks it down well.) You can read it here -- scroll down to the very bottom, his dissent is only 4 paragraphs, and it is beautifully, wonderfully written. The 'Poor Joshua!' paragraph is the most famous, but I return again and again to the passage Justice Blackmun quotes from Stone's Law, Psychiatry and Morality, and particularly the line "What is required of us is moral ambition."
(I learned about the case and Blackmun's dissent through the podcast 5-4, which is both excellent, and a good antidote to growing up in the shadow of the Warren Court, as I did. The Supreme Court has always sucked, it turns out. Seriously, it's one of my favorite Supreme Court podcasts and I subscribe to, um, a lot.)

The LP contains "a diverse collection of pop-infused tracks and emotional ballads influenced by the sounds of her career," according to a press release.

thank you for tagging me in @skeptiquewrites @bluebutter-art @short666bread @emmalovesdilemmas — you are all unknowingly encouraging my work procrastination, and thus are getting long answers.
relationship status: single and my DMs are open (jk… or am i… ?? find out!!) // but for real, i moved across the country last year and it has been a ROUGH time since then (unexpected family loss, covid, elderly pet troubles, general world stuff). i’ve convinced myself i’m in too dramatic of a headspace for dating seriously at the moment but i think the actual answer is i just don’t want to! i am the epitome of an only child in that i really value both my independence and being left alone.
favorite color: yellow, but specifically a goldenrod/mustardy yellow.
favorite food: i have been thinking about this for a very long time, because there are so many things i LOVE but what is my FAVORITE you know??? i think i’ll have to go with… savory - any type of rice & bean & cheese & tortilla combo you can come up with, specifically when it’s slathered with avocado and green tomatillo salsa. sweet - lemon meringue pie
song stuck in my head: the library/museum song from stardew valley. i’ve been playing stardew for a little bit every day as a way to calm down in this month of Every Obligation I’ve Ever Had Happening At Once, and sometimes i trot my character over to the library just to hear this song and breathe deeply.
last thing i googled: english > catalan translator. this is for a dron/semi-dronarry fic i am working on :)
time: 11:39 AM PST
dream trip: france for the tour (de france). i’ve been planning and having to reschedule this trip since 2019 due at first to my own logistical failure and then every year since then due to covid. on the plus side, the delay has given me beaucoup time to learn and continue to be wildly mediocre at french. i also really want to go to patagonia and tour around chile and peru, and i want to go back to iceland in a campervan for the northern lights. i have a lot of dreams okay!!
no pressure tagging in @sweet-s0rr0w @geesenoises @sorrybutblog @3lvendork @makeitp1nk if you so desire!
