hii, you're studying japanese in uni right?? i am enrolling in winter and thinking of taking japanese as a minor (my major is linguistics), but i'm scared it will be too time-consuming with learning all the kanji and stuff :(( was ist very difficult for you or is it doable?

hii! yes i am!

(keep in mind i'm answering based on my own experience so it might be different for you!)

okay so first of all, it's a really fascinating language with a fascinating culture and history, and i think you should be able to keep up with the lessons if you're already interested in it. and by that i mean that japanese is a pretty hard language, so imo it's going to be easier for you to not give up if you're already interested in learning it before your classes even start

about kanjis, tbh the first weeks/months are probably going to be the hardest because you'll have to get used to the stroke order and to this kind of writing. but after a few months it'll become much easier I PROMISE. i used to learn 10 kanjis in a week when i started, and now i'm able to learn 10 in a day (which usually means i'm cramming for an exam)

(also, here's an advice if you do pick japanese as your minor: WRITE YOUR KANJIS. WRITE WRITE AND WRITE. IT'S THE ONLY WAY YOU'LL MEMORIZE THEM) (i feel like it's my duty to share this trick because i used to only look at them since i was scared to mess up if i wrote them down) (yes that's a very dumb way of thinking)

in fact the first weeks/months are going to be the hardest overall (they were for me at least, because i had never learned a language that was so different from french and english so it took me some time to get used to it). i remember one of my teachers was really scaring us about the workload at the beginning of last year, because they only wanted students who were truly motivated. we went from a class of 60 students to 30 in a week.

so yes, it is time consuming, but if your major is linguistics then your brain will most likely be used to adapting to different languages! so that will make things much easier already!

so basically: it is a difficult language, but it will get easier over time to memorize vocabulary, grammar rules and kanjis. i would say go for it(!!) but idk i might be biased hahaha

on a scale from zero to ten, i would say i struggled at about 6.5/10? maybe 7/10 on a bad day and/or before my exams

#love how i said 'i struggled' as if i wasn't still struggling right now #but idk #there's comfort in knowing i'm learning grammar stuff that's considered hard #at least that's my teacher told us lmao maybe she lied #almailbox ₁

do you have any advice for studying japanese please

i have a few yes!

- if it’s not already done, first step is to learn hiragana and katakana (there are some v good apps for that, i used this one and i think it’s also on android)

- but obviously you’re gonna have to learn kanjis at some point, and my advice to memorize them is simply writing and writing and writing. i personally have a photographic memory but for some reason it doesn’t really help me when it comes to kanjis (i think it’s because some of them look a lot alike)

- GRAMMAR IS IMPORTANT! if (like me) japanese isn’t similar to a language you can already speak, then you probably won’t be able to just throw some words in a sentence and see if it rings to the ear, because it’s not intuitive at all. which is why i like to have a definite set of rules to help me make a sentence

- when you’re learning a verb, try to also learn the particle(s) that go along with it (if you don’t know what particles are yet, it might be scary at first but i promise it’s not that bad)

- be consistent! i think this applies to any language, but it’s better to study frequently (even if you feel like you’re not making progress) and to set reachable goals for yourself rather than setting the bar too high from the beginning

- and also i feel like i should warn you: the first months of learning are the hardest (and by far i think). but once you’re comfortable with the syntax, the conjugation, and once you’ve understood how kanjis work, then it’ll be much easier!
