                    raylan’s eyebrows arch in a twin expression of disbelief. still adjusting to the dark and sudden wakefulness, at first he can only just make out the hazy outline of tim’s body in the bed next to him. the moonlight filtering through the windows slowly highlights the details for him: tim’s spine ramrod straight, blankets twisted in his fists. each breath he takes is rabbity quick through his nose, beads of sweat glistening on his forehead despite the fan gentling a breeze down upon them from the ceiling. 

                   ❝  nice try, gutterson.  ❞     he rolls over onto his side. props himself up on an elbow, careful not to jostle tim too much, mindful of keeping a distance. the last time he’d heard the same type of strangled sounds, screaming muffled by sleep, he was just a boy and his daddy was a few years out of vietnam. getting too close to arlo when he was reliving his time under uncle sam’s direction was a good way to get popped.

                   it’s hard to imagine tim struggling, but the evidence is right beside him, eyes wild and haunted. and while they’ve been doing this dance with each other for longer than raylan cares to admit, he can count on one hand the amount of times he’s seen tim honestly lose control. of course, he’s only recently started spending the night. laying your head down next to someone, waking up with them in the morning, that was an intimacy they’d avoided at first.

does your muse find it easy to be impartial in emotional situations ? for this one, what raylan thinks and what he does are two vast distinctions. he certainly believes that this is an easy thing for him, and that he’s good at making decisions based on logic and common sense, or on what’s right. however, he is a person who feels things deeply; especially rage, and he makes many of his decisions stemming from that deep well of wrath that’s been simmering away in the pit of his stomach for over thirty years. much of the time, raylan thinks he’s acting on behalf of a moral right when in reality, his decision came from a place of personal feeling. occasionally they line up, but not always.

how introspective is your muse ? how often do they self - reflect ? honestly? not terribly. raylan isn’t a very sentimental person, and for him, introspection falls under the banner of sentimentality. most of his self-reflection comes when he’s drunk and alone ( which is a fairly frequent occurrence ) but little actual growth comes out of that kind of thinking, because he’s either unlikely to recall his own insights in the morning, and he tends to write-off the insights he does remember as nought but the flawed musings of a mind drowning in bourbon. 

that’s not to say he’s completely lacking any sort of self-perception or ability to look inwards. but he is the type to try to avoid trips into his own psyche. he knows that spending too much time in your own head is damaging--as a teenager, lapsing into the comfort of his own thoughts tended to lead him into depressive periods. as a result, raylan concluded that indulging in the sentimentality of introspection was a good way to hurt yourself.

living life a little more shallowly allowed for a sunnier disposition.

                    he’s at the kitchenette fixing himself a cup of coffee--dash of cream, three sugars--when the gruff question interrupts his thoughts. raylan lifts his eyes from the chipped ceramic mug, spoon tinkling off the sides, to find his new desk mate leaned against the countertop. staring at him intently. ashley graves has the bearing of a military man, but that’s all raylan’s been able to glean thus far--his background is hush-hush. file locked away in art’s vault, somewhere beneath that top-shelf bottle of bourbon he keeps in case of emergencies. 

                   ❝  what gave it away?  ❞   raylan quips, brows raising as he brings the cup to his lips. the first sip is scalding, and he can barely suppress the small flinch it elicits. the last thing he wants is to appear foolish in front of this man, but he thinks vaguely that he should be forgiven--after all, he wasn’t expecting ashley to sneak up on him like this. he’s got a way of moving silently, appearing where you’d least expect him that unnerves raylan. 

                   beside that, graves has been around for nearly a month and has barely said ten words to him in that amount of time. this is bound to set a record. three whole words all strung together to form an actual question.

how does your muse feel about fate ? do they believe they can change their own destiny ? oh, raylan very much believes he’s the master of his own destiny. in general, he’s a person who craves control. there’s no way he could allow for fate to get in his way. actions have consequences, and there’s no predetermination involved. 

the only thing that comes close to a belief in fate for rayan is his entanglement with boyd crowder. something deep inside him insists that he must be the one to deal with crowder--whether that be putting him in the ground, or a prison cell.

                    honestly, raylan doesn’t expect to end his night at the bar knocking back dollar blue moon’s with tim. being far more sensible, rachel and art both excused themselves far before the evening hit that hazy point of no return, a commitment to the healthy buzz he’s been maintaining for the better part of an hour. it’s not entirely uncommon for them to all go out, or even for he and tim to close out the night together. but until just recently, raylan was too busy working his way back into winona’s good graces for office get togethers. 

                   they have a habit of going round and round each other, a relationship like old bath water perpetually circling the drain. his heart is starting to feel waterlogged from the effort. it was only a few days ago that she’d scorned his most recent attempt at changing, and raylan always finds solace in these occasions ( for they’ve been many ) at the bottom of a bottle. fortuitously, this little jaunt to the local LEO bar in lexington was already on the office calendar when winona decided to dump him. raylan didn’t even need to plan anything special to drown his sorrows. 

                   in the end, he abandons his own town car in the parking lot in favor of accepting a ride home from tim. the more sober of the two of them. at the very least, he can walk straight, which is more than raylan’s got going for him.

                   it’s no secret that tim is much better at holding his liquor than raylan has ever been, or ( with luck ) will ever be. whenever he pauses to examine that ( fact being that tim drinks too goddamn much ) it unearths a small stone of concern in the pit of his stomach, worried-smooth over the years. but much like the rest of his relationship with tim, raylan chooses to bury it once more. he is perpetually digging a grave for whatever it is they are, for everything that they could be if only raylan could open his eyes and recognize it. but he’s always had tunnel vision. a man like him belongs down in the mines. sure, he could claw his way up and out into the daylight, but there was no fixing the myopia borne of darkness. a fear bred too deep to excise. 

                    as always, he goes to tim blindly. eyes full up of a dream that will never be within reach. and like the many other times they’ve done this, raylan invites him in to stay the night. 

                   ❝  that ain’t even a couch. that’s an arm chair.  ❞  raylan scoffs, settling atop the bed and toeing off his worn leather boots. the old mattress creaks beneath his weight. he tilts his head back, leveling his gaze at the ceiling. he’s never been good at this--not with tim--and it’s easier when he’s not looking directly at what he wants.   ❝  we ain’t together anymore. me and winona. if that’s the thing got you settling for that chair.  ❞

                    for a moment, he hovers at the door, boots just kissing the threshold. truthfully, raylan is loathe to squander the good will they’ve managed to foster between them over the past few weeks. it hadn’t been easy at first, blending their personalities. they both wanted to lead, and if working was dancing they’d sure as hell missed a fair few steps. trod right on each other’s toes. not that the clashing quelled any of the tension that also hung heavy in the air around them like smoke. it was maybe not advisable to test the constraints of their newfound bond. 

                   but he’s never been a cautious man. the fact that they’d been out in the middle of the night, poking around in the business of men who wouldn’t give it half a think before shooting them, stood as a testament to that. besides, he’s exhausted, down to his bones. working a damn-near sixteen hour day hit him a lot harder now than it did when he was fresh out of glynco. from this vantage point, the stained and paisley-printed arm chair next to the window in alex’s motel room seemed as welcome a bed as any. 

                   it only takes a split second to make the decision, and raylan is closing the door shut behind him. with the air conditioner humming in the background, the room is blessedly cool after the oppressive heat outside. the space feels small with both of them in it, but he doesn’t let the silence stretch into awkwardness. instead, he takes the opportunity to pluck his hat from his head, scratching long fingers through his damp hair. the stetson’s liner is dark with sweat. raylan lets it fall onto the table. 

                   ❝  was beginning to think you’d never ask.  ❞   this room is nicer than the one he lives in, which really isn’t saying too much. the bar was pretty low. still, his eyes sweep over the desk and nightstands, searching. if he’s staying put, might as well get comfortable. the wisdom behind his decision to unbuckle the gun belt from around his waist.   ❝  please tell me you’ve got a bottle of bourbon hiding in here somewhere.  ❞

                    𝙷𝙴'𝙳 𝙽𝙴𝚅𝙴𝚁 𝙻𝙾𝚅𝙴𝙳 𝚂𝚃𝙰𝙺𝙴𝙾𝚄𝚃𝚂. sure, they got him out of the office for the day--and that was worth something, since raylan hated nothing more than piles of paperwork. but sitting in his town car for twelve hours at a time, sipping lukewarm coffee from paper cups, was far from his idea of a good time. 

                   ❝  oh, i’m sorry, my company not doin’ it for you?  ❞   raylan peered at her from under the brim of his hat, a lopsided grin on his face. between them sat the detritus of hours ill-spent; sandwich wrappers, abandoned crossword puzzles, a tattered paperback western, candy wrappers and a half-eaten bag of pretzels. a manila file with photos of their target sat on the console, taunting them. they hadn’t seen hide nor hair of the man since they’d set up shop in the wee hours of the morning. frankly, raylan was starting to get a little antsy himself, staring at a house in which there’d been absolutely no discernible activity, waiting for their guy to decide he needed to take the trash down to the street or some other domestic bullshit that’d bring him outside--unlikely, judging by the sorry state of the place. 

                   he let out a long-suffering sort of sigh, stretching his long limbs as best he could beneath the dashboard before focusing back on scarlett.   ❝  if you shoot me, i’ll shoot you. deal?  ❞
