“Oh.” Yoruichi had seemingly just suddenly appeared in the doorframe of the room Kamille currently occupied without making a sound. “I’d heard from Quattro that the Argama had picked up someone interesting and gotten into quite the mess.” The unusual intonation on the man’s name was only just barely there, and seemed more playful than anything. “That must be you. Kamille, isn’t it? I’m Yoruichi. I’m here from Karaba and just thought I’d say hi. I’d hope he’s already told you about us.”

Some of my notes from watching Zeta Gundam very, very slowly (up until ep. 34)
(Needless to say that it contains spoilers and that I get very annoying about the female characters because that's my thing)
Tumblr media
-I'm 6 episodes into Zeta Gundam and I still don't know what to make of Kamille. On the other hand, it took me a look at some screenshots of SD Gundam Kamille to know that I'd die for him.
-I was very surprised to see Kamille openly declaring that he's autistic. Why don't we have more of that?
-20 episodes in, now (watching v. slowly). So... Z isn't exactly that great about women... right? 0079 left me gladly surprised on that front, but my expectations were super low. Maybe I should turn off that part of my brain while watching this.
- I hate to say this about a female character but so far Beltorchika is so annoying. Wake up, sis! You can't fix the dude, you barely know him! He's not opening up to you, and please leave the 15 year old out of your problems with Amuro!
-"I learned karate and how to make Mobile Suits to become a man!". Kamille isn't beating the transmasc allegations /J
-It makes sense that Kamille resents her mother for apparently caring more about her job than her family, but this does speak more of that general anxiety about women in the workplace than of anything else. Might be a common cliché at the time, still don't like it.
-She's allowed to be a terrible mom, but maybe for other more nuanced reasons? Also the fact that Kamille mentions that Fa made things that his mother should've done for him... it's gonna be really awkward if Kamille/Fa is the endgame ship.
-So, if both Kamille's parents were responsible for the development of the MK-II, then when he fights in it, one can say that his parents are still protecting him. On the other hand, we could also consider the MK-II as Kamille's little br- *gets shot*
-Ep 21: The titular Zeta Gundam appears. -Male Feminist guy is creepy. -Bright has the vibes of an exhausted High School teacher. - Fa rescues Kamille in space. This two are soo endgame
-Bright: Emma, you should do something about Kamille and Fa. Emma: Nah. I'm not Kamille's mom, besides, teens like to make drama as a form of recreation.
Emma is so cool. (Also, she and Reccoa should kiss)
-If there's a fanfic out there about Bright Noah being a clueless high school teacher/principal, please let me know. That's like the perfect AU for him.
-Girls can also fuck up in the battlefield and get slapped as a form of military disciplinary tactic! Hashtag equality. (But seriously though, I wasn't expecting Fa to become a pilot. Interesting).
-In the comment section of the dubious site where I'm watching this show, people are saying that Zeta is ahead of its time. And yeah, in many aspects it is. On the other hand it took Gundam 40+ years to have a girl protag. Suletta Mercury should've been invented like 30 or 20 years ago.
-Meanwhile, Scirocco is high-key trying to get Jerid killed and failing. They're both huge losers.
-Also, Kamille is slowly and steadily growing on me.
-Kamille becomes more mature and thoughtful. - The story brings Katz to be the new impulsive boy who fucks everything up. -Katz matures after a couple of episodes. -Now there's a pair of annoying kids whose only purpose is to awake Fa's maternal instinct (???) It never ends!
-On the other hand, I did enjoy those five seconds where Quattro was babysitting those kids. Would've preferred more of that.
-I love that in-universe everyone refers to teenage drama as "recreation". Even Kamille at some point admits that he and Fa are engaging in such recreation. At least their relationship is evolving in a healthier way than Amuro and Fraw's in 0079.
-Between Reccoa possibly having feelings for Scirocco and Mauar protecting Jerid, it's evident that in this universe everyone suffers from having Bad Taste in Men. Y'all could do better, queens!
-Also everyone punches and slaps each other so much. And it's not a love language. It's just another language that everyone just use. (There's even a punch compilation in tumblr, it's hilarious).
-I really hope to eventually get an explanation of what's up with those kids that Char brought from Earth, because so far their only purpose is to fuel Fa's maternal instincts.
-Episode 33! We're finally meeting those funny guys from Axis. This is also full of high quality Char moments.
-*Char has flashbacks of him playing with toddler!Mineva and also gets angry when he realizes how much they have manipulated her* Aww, daddy Char.
* Char unnecesarily beats the crap out of Kamille, five minutes later* Hey! What the hell, Char?!
-Char: "I have never betrayed anyone in my entire life! Ever!
lol, a classic.
-Help! Char is starting to have a similar effect on me as the one that other horrible and pathetic fictional white men have on tumblrinas.
-Seriously though, if UC Gundam were more popular in the western hemisphere, Char Aznable would totally be a Tumblr Sexyman. *shudders*
-Me: I see, so Reccoa actually has a death wish, she recklessly jumps into the battlefield on a desperate attempt to find her own demise, but she doesn't know it.
Z Gundam: Actually Scirocco is brainwashing her with space magic and she's sexually frustrated with Char.
Wha-?
-Reccoa has so many death flags that I'm always surprised whenever she survives. Her fake "death" and its consequences were really well done. I particularly liked Kamille's reaction.
-Maybe the most effective death flag in Zeta is being close to Jerid. That's more letal than the birthday song or being near Amuro's range.
And that's all for now. Join me next time as I try to watch Z less slowly so I might be able to watch "Char's Counterattack" before Christmas 2023.

Okay I said I was gonna post my new Gundam Rankings and since finishing a bunch of stuff I felt like a numbered list wouldn't do the series justice so instead here's a tierlist:
S Tier -Zeta Gundam -Turn A Gundam -Gundam 00 -Gundam 00: A Wakening of the Trailbrazer
A Tier -Gundam Unicorn -Witch from Mercury -Char's Counterattack -Gundam Thunderbolt
B+ Tier -ZZ Gundam
B Tier -Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 -08th MS Team
C Tier -Narrative Gundam
D Tier -Stardust Memory
I was thinking of writing explanations for each placement here but the more I thought about it the more I realized the explanations would get longer the lower I got because it'd just be me complaining about stuff.
So if anyone wants a more detailed explanation then send an ask and I'll go off. Instead, I'd like to say one thing I enjoyed about each series be it a scene, MS Design, song, or whatever. So here goes:
Zeta Gundam- This one just has a lot of favorites for me. Favorite mobile suit, favorite protagonist, favorite unhinged white women
Turn A- This series has, imo, the best episode in the entire franchise with Midnight Sun.
Gundam 00- This might be a hot take? But easily my favorite mobile suit designs on average for the whole series.
A Wakening of the Trailblazer- Two for One babyyy, Setsuna fucking rules so much and not only is he another favorite character of mine now but he might be one of the Gundam Protagonists to resonate with me the most
Unicorn- I've said it before on another post but that scene where Banagher uses the NT-D system to hold the tether on cargo ship and help it escape Earth's atmosphere is one my favorite scenes ever. I think that scene really represents everything that UC Gundam stands for with placing their hope on the next generation.
Witch from Mercury- This series got me into Gundam!!! It's far from perfect but I feel like it's had a very profound effect on my life in the past year. It's also responsible for just making me insane about this series and gunpla in general
Char's Counterattack- The ending to this movie felt like the perfect ending to the original Tomino Trilogy. The Axis Shock was the perfect way to end Amuro and Char's story and I wouldn't have it any other way
Gundam Thunderbolt- Literally some of the most insane visuals and soundtrack I think I've seen in an anime. Also, uh, Bianca Carlyle
ZZ Gundam- We got so many iconic and cunty looks from Haman in this one. Also, Haman, literally the best character in the series.
Mobile Suit Gundam '79- The place where it all start babyyyyy, it's so fucking iconic and influential. Don't let me placing in this B Tier confuse you or give the impression I think it's bad. Original Gundam is amazing and anyone who's seriously getting into the franchise should come around to watch this one, be it the series or the compilation movies.
08th MS Team- I think this one has one of my favorite endings for a gundam tv series. Both the Ep 11 ending and the entirety of Ep 12 as an epilogue. It was fitting, uplifting, and had the right amount of mystique and weird newtype shit going on for a UC series.
Narrative Gundam- The chase scene between Jona and the Phenex is one of the sickest action scenes ever. It's so fucking intense and you can feel Jona's body and MS being crushed under the g forces trying to keep up with the Phenex.
Stardust Memory- As much as I bitch about '83, I do think the animation is *very* good. Something about 90s animation really just hits different.

So I'm getting into gundam looking up posts talking about zeon and fascism. I recently watched the mobile suit gundam compilation movies and I'm partway through zeta. In my hyperfocus on gundam I've been wondering. Despite the fact that zeon are clear fascists why are they held up so much by the fanbase is there something I'm missing by watching this in release order. I don't even think aeug are the good guys where I am in zeta. Sorry if this is long and rambling I'm just hyperfocusing on gundam and you seem knowledgeable.
part of it is definitely that people aren't keen on the historical parallels and politics. but most of it is that Zeon characters that fans are commonly drawn to are a combination of being given sympathetic backgrounds that establish they're simply with Zeon out of circumstance (Ramba Ral in particular), they're outright just written well (Char, Haman, who you'll meet in zeta soon enough), and/or they're given Really cool framing (everyone mentioned, but also Gato from 0083 and Packard from 08th ms team). it's usually the latter. how much cooler zakus and other Zeon mobile suits might be compared to Federation mobile suits to some people adds to it.
I'd say there's nothing you're missing out on by watching in release order, it's just that fans that aren't too keen on media analysis will tend to be captured by the cool framing and think and say "these zeon characters are given lots of cool moments, that means Zeon itself is cool!" without giving any real thought as to implications or parallels or whatnot to irl politics, such as the iconic scene of ghiren rallying the crowd into chanting “SIEG ZEON.” and it doesn't help that certain writers and directors besides Tomino (who wrote the works central to Universal Century, like the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta, ZZ, CCA, and Hathaway's Flash) tend to lionize certain Zeon characters without also establishing or hinting that the characters or the fascist ideology that they fight for is flawed. but there's a good reason it's the gundam fandom that spawned the "wow! cool robot" meme--it's definitely more that the gundam fandom's so large it's got more than its fair share of vocal chuds to the point they could get memed on and the meme got traction.
with that all being said, at the end of the day, gundam's still a media franchise. people are allowed to like the characters since the creators do what they can to make characters more interesting to follow, or seem like more of a threat, or establish a proper narrative throughline with a resolution, etc. I myself love char and haman a lot! but I do still tend to steer clear of people that vocally love Zeon itself and regurgitate Zeon rhetoric uncritically, if that makes sense. (I steer clear of a lot of gundam fans anyway, but I digress).
also irt AEUG, they're most definitely not on the side of Zeon by fighting another branch of the Earth Federation forces or anything, if that's the impression you got. even though the Titans the AEUG forces are fighting were formed to cut off any potential rebellious movements that might lead to another catastrophic event like the colony drops, that's just on paper, and Titans just used that as an excuse to violently oppress spacenoids and their movements in Zeta are leading to complete fascist takeover of the EF government. so rest assured, even if the characters in the AEUG themselves haven't been too personable, they're still fighting the good fight.

Dunno how often you get asks like this, but... Do you ever sometimes wonder what kind of Mobile Suits, Gundam or otherwise, the Symphonia cast would pilot, whether it's as part of a strictly Gundam-style AU, or something closer to the Build Fighters/Build Divers series with them using a custom Gunpla?
@penn-inkwell nope this is the first question of its kind haha I've actually done a crossover before for Xillia x Gundam but I never posted it!
Though I haven't thought about specific MS's because I'm not super familiar with their specs, but I can certainly try! I'm most comfortable with the Zeta universe since I've seen it a bunch of times. I have not watched Build Fighters. 8) Lloyd: Zeta Gundam - duel wielding two beam sabers because that doubles his power. it's also very fast and can transform which i think fits his personality.
Kratos: Hyaku-shiki - i mean... it has wings! all around good offensive unit and can operate the mega bazooka launcher (i'd love to see him do that)
Colette: Palace Athene - she needs the high defense over mobility tbh... but she packs quite a punch, as her artillery can sink a warship. perfect!
Genis: G-Defenser - he's smol and that will fit him LOL
Raine: commander
Sheena: Gundam Mk-II - for the high mobility (low defense tho)
Zelos: Qubeley - i imagine Zelos would have a knack for operating funnels
Presea: Psycho Gundam - because she'd definitely be a cyber-newtype. and it's really OP and tanky
Regal: Methuss - pretty mobile and tanky, also directly supports the Hyaku-shiki (Kratos) and i always thought they'd work well together

It'd become really obvious the Argama's current guard patrol wasn't going to run into anything, so might as well have some fun. Yoruichi flipped her radio's switch. "Hey, Quattro," his name was always said with the subtlest amused air, "I'm curious: how do you feel about classical music?"
