Finale nails pt. 1

I first knew I wanted to do the different versions of "YES!/?" and the rest of the design

There were a few versions of the iDK shirt that I saw floating around, so I decided to do two with different fonts and background tie-dye designs. I used a special magnetic polish to give it a more etherial feel.

After seeing @caitmayart 's drawing of Ankarna, I knew I wanted to do her hair. The gradient design was one I ended up redoing a few times to get right.

For the Helio shirt, I couldn't do the exact design, so I simplified it into a rainbow-gradient stamp (yeah, simple). I can't read Kristen's shirt in the official art, so I tried to come up with a phrase that made sense. Even though this nail was supposed to be smaller and less important, it was one of the more complicated designs so also took a few tries lol.

Kalina is meant to be subtle and blend in. She was a late addition because I didn't know what to put on my last nail, but I'm super happy I added her.

Here are all my mess-ups. This was a multi-day project, but I'm happy with the results.

Base color: Holo Taco - Cool Cat Mom (magnetic), Lavender Syrup, Box Office Bomb.

Stamping: polishes and plates from Maniology. Pulled designs from a lot of plates so if anyone wants a full list lmk and I'll add one.

Hard to believe Nine Inch Nails' classic The Downward Spiral is 30 years old today! Here is some detail photography I took of the original album cover painting by Russell Mills for the 10th anniversary deluxe edition release, which I had the unique honor of designing, and somehow that is now 20 year old.

Everyone has that one album that hit at just the right moment of adolescence to change their perspective on music and get them through their teenage angst. The Downward Spiral was that album for me, released as it was in 1994, when I was a freshman in high school (and an absolute banner year for music/films/games all around). I must have stared at the artwork for hours over those years, without even much detail to draw from on its tiny 5” CD slip case. So five years later, when I found myself inexplicably working for Nine Inch Nails, it was surreal to see the actual original painting in the flesh, hanging as it was at the time in Trent Reznor’s office at Nothing Studios, New Orleans.

I was struck by how much dimension and texture there was in the artwork that never translated on that tiny slipcase printing, how much detail was happening in the physical materials of the art: Flies, moths, wires, blood… I had been staring at this “painting” for so long, yet suddenly it was like I had never seen it before. I also noticed that it had aged - the wires had wilted over the years, drooping down from their original position as captured in the original album cover (interestingly, judging by the photo posted today by NIN, the piece has since been restored); a tooth was missing from the other main piece.

That experience stuck with me and it was the first thing I thought about when the task of re-imagining the album package fell upon me in 2004. I wanted to re-photograph the artwork, subtly updating the cover to show that ten years had changed it physically, much like our perceptions of art and music and memories change over time with perspective. I also wanted to dig into the previously unseen details of the work and explore it with my macro lens, so that fans like me, old and new, could have new layers of texture to pore over for hours while listening to a legendary album.

Behold my finale nails (part one)!

This is only my second or third time using these nail post things, but they were super helpful in getting the stamps lined up for the lettering. And I was able to arrange the nails to be easily read instead of having to contort my hands.

Base polish is Red Licorice from Holo Taco. Stamping polishes are Evil Eye, Heart of Gold, and Bam! White from Maniology, stamping plates also from Maniology.

Rings are from Kinetic Color Foundry and are my favorite fidget. Full review post w/ shop link HERE.

Reasons Angel Dust wears gloves:

(TW: Valentino, abuse, death)

1. Like actual spiders he can taste/smell/hear with them. So gloves= less input

2. It’s stylish

3. Hell is icky and he doesn’t wanna touch it

4. Covers scars/track marks.

5. Valentino enforced style

6. He’s been taught not to leave finger prints at the scene of a crime

7. Relationship with touch is all messy because of work, this keeps him covered from skin on skin contact while still being stylish.

8. His gloves actually act as a pocket dimension for his guns- to get access to the guns he needs the gloves.

9. Getting his nails done every other day got too expensive so he needed to make financial cuts somewhere

10. Actually really sensitive to a lot of sensations/textures so gloves make life bearable

11. So when he commits the murder he doesn’t need to wash the blood off, just swap out gloves

12. To hide spider markings/stripes

13. He doesn’t wear gloves. His fur actually just changes colors.

14. They aren’t gloves. They’re arm prosthetics. What you think is him without gloves? No those are just prosthetics made to blend in.

15. Val wouldn’t let him get tattoos so these are the next best thing

16. Alternatively: the markings Angel has ARE tattoos/branding forced on by Val so he prefers to keep them covered. Also why Val has him take them off on the studio, to show he “owns” him.

17. The markings are tattoos but rather than being forced by Val Angel got them when he was really high and now regrets them.

18. So when he’s doing arts and craft his fur and hands don’t get covered in super glue

19. Because he can smuggle slight amounts of drugs in them

20. He was never allowed to wear gloves like that growing up so now he REALLY likes so

21. His brother told him gloves like that was for sissies so he did it out of spite.

22. Molly died before him. One of the only things he has remaining of her was a lone glove, now he incorporates stuff like that into his style to stay close. Takes them off in the studio when he can to “keep Molly away from it all.”

23. Same as above but instead of it being Molly’s glove it was his mother’s. The siblings maybe have a shared attachment to them.

To say you didn't get out much as an understatement. Between your duties at the Sanctum and personal preference for a night of TV and wine, going out didn't fall high on the priority list. If Stephen didn't all but drag you on his daily walks around the city, there was a good chance you could go the whole day without a hint of fresh air.

Tonight was special though. You and Stephen had finally wrangled to have an honest to God date night, and you were both determined to make the most of it.

He had nailed down a place that required real reservations meaning you traded in your after eight o'clock sweats for a heels and full make up. You made a show of complaining, but that's really all it was. To be honest, it was nice to have an excuse to dress up and better yet, be with somebody who appreciated when you did.

He didn't even make a snarky comment when he saw you descend the stairs.

"Too much?" you asked.

That shook him out of his stupor before offering his hand. "Just right."

The restaurant was perfect, small and intimate, but still gave enough room for a live band and an open dance floor.

You weren't sure you wanted to ask how Strange found this place. You also weren't sure how either of you could afford it. The God damn soup was fifteen dollars. Granted, it was really good soup.

The discomfort on your face must have showed as Strange reached across the table and gave your hand a light squeeze.

"This is on me," he promised. "Let's just have fun tonight."

And you did, after a few glasses of wine and a full meal of course. You slowly forgot about the sanctum and other dimensions and monsters under the bed. You weren't masters of the mystic arts here. You were just two people enjoying a nice meal and company they loved.

Before you knew it, Strange had pulled you out of your seat and onto the small dance floor.

For you own sake, you were grateful to find you weren't the only ones. You were confident enough in heels to walk the distance between the portal and front door of the restaurant; dancing was a whole other beast.

"Don't worry," Strange assured. "I won't show you all my moves tonight."

"Oh, you have moves now?" you teased.

A smirk crossed his lips. It was your only warning before the man took a hard hold of your hand and dipped you practically to the floor.

You let out an involuntary squeal of laughter earning you several stares from the other patrons.

Strange pulled you back up, not looking at all sorry for the stunt he just pulled.

You have him a half-hearted swat on the shoulder. "Warn me next time."

"Next time," he said, dryly.

You rolled your eyes, but stayed in his arms as he spun you around the dance floor. You couldn't think of a more perfect night than this.

i love aroace identities so much and i love how varied our experiences can be! i have a friend whose ace and completely sex repulsed and shes so valid! i have a friend whose aroace and doesnt want to be in a relationship and just doesnt care about either of those forms of attraction and hes so valid! im aroace and i have complicated feelings around romantic and sexual attraction and i experience them differently than the norm and im so valid! there are a bajillion different forms of aroace experiences in the world and we are all so valid!
