To Fall by Treachery!
Tumblr media
The Avengers #164
Solid.
Erik Josten, the Living Laser, Count Nefaria.
Josten is still annoyed about Luke Cage stealing his super-villain name, Parks is still vicious, and Nefaria is skint. He's got big plans, it seems, but no cash to make them happen. A nice bit of storytelling.
Over with the heroes, the Beast gets some decent character moments, we learn a bit about Wonder Man, and the rest is action when the villains attack the mansion.
On Sale Date: July 19, 1977.
Jim Shooter (8 of 20).

No Final Victory!
Tumblr media
The Avengers Annual #6
A packed 27 pages.
The Living Laser and... Nuklo!
Plenty of action. Arthur Parks' motivations make sense. He's done his research, he now has the Serpent Crown, and he wants power. It's a tad convenient that he goes after Nuklo just when the mutant's father has randomly decided to hang out with the Avengers. And it's a bit vague how Parks' laser powers are able to accomplish some of the things he does in this two-parter. But it's cool to see Wonder Man come to his senses and battle alongside the Avengers, and the art is gorgeous.

Home is the Hero!
Tumblr media
The Avengers #153
Chaotic but exciting.
The Living Laser gets his hands on the Serpent Crown. (That can't be good.)
This one's a bit all over the place, but it hangs together pretty well. We've got plenty of action in different locations, but the key scenes involve Arthur Parks battling Scarlet Witch for possession of the ancient power object. He also - we learn in flashback - causes the Whizzer to attack the Avengers to "confuse" them. Bob Frank makes mincemeat of the team, which is fun to see.

The Killer With My Name!
Tumblr media
Power Man #21
Man, this is fun!
Erik Josten shows up, angry that Luke is using the Power Man name.
It's a very flimsy premise/motivation but it sure works as a story. The villain is bland but the action is good. The real strength here is Luke. His personality is a blast. Claire Temple has written him a goodbye letter, he's in bad mood and he isn't taking any crap from this guy. Especially when a little girl gets caught in the crossfire.

The Adventures of Superman #442
Below average.
Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, and others join the battle.
It all gets a bit silly here. Other heroes have their powers stolen. And there are dreary scenes with Lois Lane and Jose Delgado. Then Clark Kent shows up at the battle and fights the alien to a standstill. Giving a wordy explanation after he's won. It all feels a bit quaint; dated. Sometimes these SUPERMAN scripts feel like an in-joke for those who read the series in the 60s. Meanwhile, the rest of us scratch our heads at how daft it all is.

The Power that Failed
Tumblr media
Superman #19
Above average.
Supes is losing his powers, one by one.
It feels like this happens a lot. But the way it's done here is intriguing. There are also some nods to ongoing plots: Lois being annoyed with Clark, Supergirl returning(!?), etc.

The Wanderers #2
Not quite as strong as issue one.
A death/rebirth and the team visit their first planet.
As with the opening chapter, we've a lot of time devoted to setting up the status quo. It's clunky but it gets the job done. And there's a mini-adventure jammed into the final pages. Some characters, like Psyche, Quantum Queen, and Dartalon, really stand out. That helps.

From Grave to Nothing...
Tumblr media
The Wanderers #1
Interesting.
Some dead heroes are cloned for a dangerous mission.
Big ideas here. It's high concept fun. And some of the characters pop right away. It's all gets a bit textbook towards the end. A lot of "this is character X and this is what they can do" stuff. But it's a strong start.

When Goliaths Clash!!!!
Tumblr media
West Coast Avengers II #92
Average.
Clint Barton vs. Erik Josten
Very standard villain-attacks-hero-HQ story. His motivation? Revenge. And someone is using his name. That's it. Lightweight stuff.
There are character-driven moments for the regulars. Nothing particularly fresh or startling in any of it.
The fight is okay. Clint is struggling, so there's some tension.
An enjoyable-but-forgettable issue. Mileage may vary but if you like Clint and Bobbi - and I do - this is probably one for you.

Iron Man #289
Damn.
"But I never knew... you were capable of such... cruelty."
On the surface it's just another slugfest after yet another villain attacks a hero's HQ looking for revenge. But this is much better than than. Both characters are really well written. And Jim Rhodes does not mess around. Strong final page, too.

Soul on Ice

Iron Man #288
Interesting story.
A tech team goes to work on “rebooting” Tony Stark.
This is a fun read. This time around, the memories that Tony is watching are much more entertaining. And give us an insight into the man.
The stuff that the tech folks are doing also holds our interest, and the ending is strong.

The Killing Joke
Tumblr media
Batman: The Killing Joke
Superb.
Joker escapes, goes after the Gordons...
This is Joker's story. He appears on 31 of the 46 pages. Batman, in contrast, appears on 23 pages. 10 of the pages are Joker's origin.
The villain's actions in the present day are as sadistic and twisted as anything you'd ever see. And the artwork is sublime. But it's really only in the last 9 pages that the story justifies its existence. When Joker explains why he's doing what he's doing it kicks everything up a level.

Deathzone!
Tumblr media
Suicide Squad #16
Packed.
Shade, the Changing Man vs. Doctor ZZ.
Picking up from the last issue, this has a very strong start. Impressive visuals, and the Squad trapped in an alien dimension. It's brilliant.
The middle section is slow and talky. It's dense with backstory. Reams of the stuff. Not very entertaining.
Finally, there's a (rushed) battle with a whole new set of baddies back on Earth. This section would have worked better as a separate issue.

Begins Our Tale of Woe
Tumblr media
The Demon #4
Anticlimactic.
Jason Blood confronts Merlin.
The narration is what drags this down. There's so much of it. And very little happens. Particularly in the first half. Things pick up as the ending draws nearer. It's a good conclusion in an average comic.

Devil to Pay
Tumblr media
Suicide Squad #15
Talky.
Incubus versus Enchantress!
The Squad is held captive for most of this issue. Their captor explains his plan and his backstory in great detail. It’s not particularly riveting. The best parts are anything involving Enchantress or Boomerang.

Slipping into Darkness

Suicide Squad #14
Good stuff.
Eve Eden leads the Squad on a rescue mission.
Nice balance here between realistic, real world stuff and pure, balls-to-the-wall fantasy. We open with Amanda Waller being outmanoeuvred in a political meeting and close with our heroes in a different dimension facing fantastic evil. Yet, the combination works. Because the writing and the characters are so strong. And there's some humour. (Always a good thing.)

Firepower is back!
Nothing much to this except action and very nice art. Seeing a battle between two characters we know almost nothing about isn't particularly thrilling.
Firepower will be back in 19 years. Atom Smasher won't be back.
