forever in awe of people who pay attention. people who wait for you while you tie your shoes while the others have walked away. when they continue listening intently while the rest of the group stopped listening. noticing your moments of silence when everyone else hasn’t. “this made me think of you” noticing things you never even noticed about yourself. people who say “text me when you get home safe.” people who make you laugh until you cry. childhood friends who keep in touch. people with genuine intentions. people who are soft when the world has given them every opportunity to turn hard. the “let’s get ice cream” at 3am friend. the turn up the music in the car and sing friend. people whose actions match their words. people who make the world feel less chaotic. kindred spirits. the trustworthy and honest. hard workers. good listeners. clear communicators. people who love you for who you are. people who don’t ask you to be anything other than yourself. people who choose you. people who stay.

I put in my goddamn hearing aid
in order to listen to a bird that sounds
like the side of a drinking glass
struck lightly by a fork
and try not to hate a life
that dips you in time like a teabag
over and over and pulls you up
each year a slightly different color.
Yet I like this hour when the air goes soft
and leaves stir with relief at the end
of their labor of being leaves.
“What a piece of work is man,” I say,
not knowing Hamlet said it first—
“how noble in reason, how infinite in faculties,
in form and moving how express; in apprehension how like an angel,
and yet, to me, the quintessence of dust!”
This hour of the evening
with a little infinity inside,
like an amnesty from the interminable
condition of being oneself.
This half-hour when you look out
and see that it is sweet.
Even in my deafness I can hear
the bird whose name I do not know
speaking to someone in the dusk.
- Summer Dusk, Tony Hoagland

Your purpose in life is not to love yourself but to love being yourself.
If you goal is to love yourself, then your focus is directed inward toward yourself, and you end up constantly watching yourself from the outside, disconnected, trying to summon the “correct” feelings towards yourself or fashion yourself into something you can approve of.
If your goal is to love being yourself, then your focus is directed outward towards life, on living and making decisions based on what brings you pleasure and fulfillment.
Be the subject, not the object. It doesn’t matter what you think of yourself. You are experiencing life. Life is not experiencing you.

There is so much more life to live when you stop constantly obsessing over who will think you're a bad person or not understand you
I am learning this in the tiniest bites but it pierces me deeply

really strange how you can be almost at peace with something that happened to you but it will continue to be a defining moment of your life for the rest of your life. you wont think about it much anymore but in a conversation about a film someone will mention the year it was released and you’ll think to yourself, “that was before it happened” and you’ll see an old photo and think how strange it is to have existed before it happened and somehow it’s like living a life in two acts

"photograph of a young palestinian girl flying her kite on al-waha beach, gaza, 2011. on this day, 6,200 palestinian children filled the gaza sky with kites, achieving the guinness world record for most kites flown simultaneously. the culture of kite flying amongst gaza youth remains a symbol of resilience, creativity, and joy. over the past 7 weeks, the amount of children killed by the israeli state has nearly surpassed this number, continuing to rise each day. we must continue calling for a permanent ceasefire now. the devastation must end" — via @azeemamag on instagram
