Here are the footnotes that came with my Norton:

This “one” should be Ishmael, his “bosom companion.” The word could be a misreading of Melville’s me, but the odd mysteriousness is heightened by the submerged biblical echoes (see “called” and “one” in a concordance to the Bible, especially the New Testament.)

I have no idea what this means and was unsuccessful in my Google search. Maybe @apocrypals can throw me a bone here ? 😅

But I do think you’re on to something. There’s something that is depersonalizing but also weirdly personal, because we have to stop and think “who is ‘one’? It must be Ishmael because who else would it be?” Instead of just taking it for granted that of course it’s Ishmael, because they’re married, it must be.

There’s also the concept of marriage as a union, two people becoming one singular unit, so it could be that as well.

I worked in geriatrics / end-of-life care for awhile and absolutely (unfortunately) I’ve seen this happen. People can be supportive during an illness and pull away out of fear when someone really takes a turn

I find it heartbreaking how Ishmael tries to distance himself from Queequeg dying: Queequeg calls someone to his deathbed to hold his hand and to express his final wishes to, he tells someone "to go to his bag and bring out his little god, Yojo," Ishmael says what "you" can see if you look at Queequeg instead of what he saw himself and dissolves himself among "every one" who is sad and "some" who are delighted when Queequeg rallies—until he's truly well and strong, and then Ishmael calls him "my Queequeg" again like he has in the past and like he did at the start of the chapter.

Me: wow look at this carpenter! I thought he only did ship maintenance but he also makes bird cages? He helps with injuries, is an artist, does piercings and even acts as a dentist when necessary. This guy has so many skills, very impressive!

I am definitely guilty of thinking that way. If I recall correctly, the Art Institute of Chicago has several large, all-black paintings and as a snarky teenager I definitely had an (inappropriate/ill-informed) laugh.

I really, really wish this had been on the placards in the museum so that I could have viewed this with the necessary context.
