Statement made by Spanish Women's National Team Players
(including but not restricted to: Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmatí, Sandra Paños, Maria Leon, Claudia Pina..)
Official Statement
First of all, we the players regret that RFEF has made public, in a selfish and biased way, a private correspondance, with information that affects our health- a part of our intimate lives, sent as an answer requested by the Federation itself in order to know who among us wanted to not get called up for the national team. A correspondance to which we still haven't received a formal response to by the way.
Secondly, in no case have we RENOUNCED the Spanish Football National Team, like the official RFEF statement had mentioned. Like we have stated in our private correspondance, we have, we do and we will uphold our unquestionable commitment to the Spanish National Team.
This is why, in our private correspondance with RFEF, we asked to not be called up until situations, that affect our emotional and personal conditions, our performance and consequently the National team's results and which can cause undesired injuries, can be amended. Those were the motives for making this descision.
We want an unwavering commitment towards a professional project where all aspects are well thought of in order to get the best performance out of a group of players who we consider to be able to achieve more and better goals. We wish the best for RFEF, for the Women's National Team and for ourselves in particular, without entering public battles.
We have never asked for the resignation of the national coach as it has been published. We understand that our job is in no case chosing that burden, but it is however expressing in an honest and constructive way what we consider helpful to the improvement of the group's performance.
Does it even occur to anyone that eight month before the World Cup, a group of PLAYERS OF THE HIGHEST LEVEL, which is what we consider ourselves to be, would make such a decision, as it has been published, on a impulse or as a shakedown?
By asking to not be called up by the National Team, we penalize our professional career, our economy and of course continuing to build something important for Women's football. Because it has taken years of hard work from a lot of people to get to where we are today. Yet there are still many things to improve upon as it has been demonstrated recently.
Coming from our ambition as players, fighters and winners, we only wish to be able to achieve the highest professional and personal successes once again. And last but certainly not least, we will not tolerate the tone of infantilization by which RFEF closed its statement.
We regret that in the context of women's sport we had to get to this extreme, as unfortunately has happened with other National Teams and other sports historically on a global scale, in order to be able to develop in an ambitious and powerful professional project for present and future generations.
