As much as I love Spock being a mommas boy and Amanda being super mom I do prefer the above. I mean Amanda smacked Spock across the face. The only thing worse was when McCoy smacked the woman about to go into labor.

I can not stress enough that in Star Trek, Amanda Grayson being an incredibly loving wife AND shitty parent is a feature, not a bug. She loves Sarek with her whole heart. And as much as she loves Spock, every single time she has to choose between them, she'll back Sarek. Spock grew up knowing his mom loved him, but that she also did not understand him and would never have his back.

Before people in the mainstream even had the vocabulary to describe what they were seeing, they understood on a gut level that Spock was a neurodivergent, mixed race adult son of two incredibly charismatic and successful parents.

There are so many layers of relatability here.

A surprising lot of people in very loving and devoted marriages aren't great parents. An unsurprising lot of powerful people with prestigious careers also aren't great parents.

Folks who grew up with parents who were great at their jobs and devoted to one another but who just couldn't relate to or understand their kids could see themselves in Spock. Moreover, he demonstrated that if they took a path radically different from what their parents wanted, they could become incredibly successful and even well liked in a whole different sphere.

Most of all, for folks who could see how much their parents adored one another but never felt like that love extended to them, there is something profound in the way Kirk looks at Spock like he hangs the stars in the sky. He's a source of hope that even if you grew up as your family's ugly duckling, if you get out from under their influence you can find someone who will perceive you as a swan.

The first of many scanned articles from my treasure trove of The Best of Trek: From the Magazine for Star Trek Fans books: "A Look at Leonard McCoy" written by Walter Irwin, co-editor of the compilations. This character analysis was from the first book published in 1978. Many of the articles from Trek Magazine were fan-submitted pieces, a precursor to the meta found on social media sites today, so it's strictly for enjoyment and nothing should be taken as canon.

@only-one-of-each-of-us, this one is for you! I'll be posting the table of contents from the books as I can get to them and if anyone sees an article they'd like scanned and posted, let me know. I am using a terrible scanning app and doing almost nothing in post to clean up the scans so I hope they're semi-readable. Enjoy??

I love that bones x kirk are just a walking ao3 fic in the 2009 film. the writers said spirk has had enough time in the sun time for MY otp, and had them meet at the lowest points of their lives. mccoy is drunk and threatening to puke on jim, jim is hungover/looks like shit, and then mccoy, the most dramatic man on the shuttle who has been spouting about imminent death, goes “all I got left r my bones” and offers him a drink from his flask. instead of being like ok this guy is mental he goes this guy is my new best friend. and then they spend their entire time at the academy as best friends! and when jim isn’t allowed onto the ship, bones risks his entire career to bring him along. because not only is it jim’s dream to see the black (not his), but he can’t imagine going out there without him. they started their relationship at rock bottom, and grew together. they rebuild their lives together. and they are a part of each other’s foundations
