Smithin' Witchery: Nails, screws, and fasteners in withcraft

Okay, here we go! 

So, I often see out there a lot of spells and other witcheries that call for “cut iron nails” in their spells. I’m sure a fair number of people are looking at that and going “the fuck? why so specific? I mean, I get why I need coffin nails for that curse, but why cut iron nails for this one?”

Here’s the scoop on nails: They are almost all commercially made of steel (brass and copper ‘nails’ are more properly called tacks or brads), but what type of steel is dependent on the job. Most nails you buy in a hardware store are either stainless steel or plated with zinc, aluminum, or occasionally chrome to prevent them from rusting. Coated steels should not be heated for health reasons, but can be stripped of their coatings by soaking in a vinegar bath for up to 48 hours, effectively etching the coating away. 

Nails: I tend to use nails of various types for spells and magics needing sealing, to fasten the other elements of the spell together, or to add an edge. 

Used Nails: I keep all nails that I find, noting where I gathered them from. This is because they retain a certain amount of energy from their previous uses, and that energy can be put to good use. As an example, I get a lot of nails used to hold shipping pallets together, and so I reserve those for use in spells needing efficacy affecting travel and communication. 

Roofing/Flooring Nails: These I use for anything that needs to be sturdy and hold its own ground. 

Brads/Tacks and Finishing Nails (the ones that basically don’t have a head): I use brads and tacks for spells and magics that need tact and subtlety. Depending on how subtle I need the spell to be, I may use copper or brass brads. 

Screws: Aesthetically, I don’t like screws, but I do keep them around anyway. I use screws for magic that needs strength, but that may also need to be potentially dismantled later (Because screws are much more effective at fastening certain things together, but are also convenient because they can be removed relatively easily).

Tips for Witchcraft in the Dorm

If you're in a situation where you have a roommate that may not be open to your craft, you're in the broom closet and being in college makes it even harder to practice, you're starting your witch journey while in college, you couldn't take a full sized altar to school, or you're like me and attend a private Christian college (ugh) that makes you feel the need to be discreet, this post is for you!

If you have an altar: Find a way to downsize your altar. For some this isn't a huge thing, but I'm the kind of gal that liked to go all out with my space. The best way to do it is to find a box or container that can be moved easily and has all your essentials, and only take what can fit. If you can't fit certain tools, it's best to find substitutions. A small bowl that can hold water will work just as well as a crystal ball. Putting herbs in bags will allow more room than jars.

Alternative to candle magic: I know the urge to put tape over that fire alarm is real but I'm unfortunately a goody two shoes. Luckily wax burners exist and you can get all the fun of candle magic minus the flame. I like to draw sigils into my wax before melting it for spellwork; and you can get all sorts of different colored wax. If you need unscented wax, you can buy white wax and dye it.

Some discreet types of magic to look into:

Tea. Tea. Tea. I cannot stress how useful tea magic is. There's loads of information about it right here on Tumblr! Most dorms allow ectric teapots and tea is easy to store.

Knot magic. Here's a great post about it. Absolutely any kind of spell can be done with a knot and it's super easy to implement into everyday activities.

Moon magic. Guys, the moon is awesome. Work with it. Moon water is a great manifestation tool and corresponding anything with the moon phases is an instant boost. It's also free and super easy.

Sigils. Really fun to learn and really easy to draw in a couple journals, on a foggy window, in your tea as you stir it, or on your skin. I recommend Pinterest if you're trying to find tutorials.

Runes. I like to cast physical runes but there's lots of ways to use these in everyday magic. Each symbol has their own meaning and there's an abundance of information on them. Similar to sigils, I like to draw them on things.

Extra tips:

Learn the correspondences for each day of the week. Doing little things for each day will keep you connected to your craft as you get through college.

Anything can be a chalice. Cleanse that cup and you're good to go.

Astrology is your friend.

It’s eclipse season for two weeks. Best time to manifest new beginnings, clear out old shit, and manifest beauty and career changes and growth. Oh charge your crystals and make eclipse water

Solar Eclipse:

The North American solar eclipse on April 8th happens during the new moon. It is a time of spiritual enlightenment, renewal, change, passion, motivation, and inspiration, and it reflects the duality of human nature. It is an energetic portal- so many things could change with this eclipse.

What can you do as a ritual?

In your space, you can use crystals that reflect these energies- Amethyst for heightened spiritual senses, selenite and clear quartz for cleansing and amplifying the effects of other crystals, obsidian for protection, and carnelian for creativity.

You can also set out water with the intention of creating eclipse water. This is different than sun water and moon water. This eclipse water will be able to assist in removing stagnant energy to create space for change to come in.

Another thing can be an intention ritual, one that would be similar to a new moon ritual. Write down your intentions for the new moon cycle. Once you write them down, you have the option to burn the paper to release those intentions into the universe (be careful with fire!). Meditation on these new intentions is also a great addition to the ritual.

Also known as: May Eve

The origins of the holiday date back to pagan celebrations of fertility rites & the coming of spring. After the Norse were Christianized, the pagan celebration became combined with the legend of St. Walburga, an English-born nun who lived at Heidenheim monastery in Germany & later became the abbess there. Saint Walpurga was hailed by the Christians of Germany for battling "pest, rabies, & whooping cough as well as against witchcraft". Christians prayed to God through the intercession of Saint Walpurga in order to protect themselves from witchcraft, as Saint Walpurga was successful in converting the local populace to Christianity. Although it is likely that the date of her canonization is purely coincidental to the date of the pagan celebrations of spring, people were able to celebrate both events under church law without fear of reprisal.

Walpurgis Night is still a traditional holiday celebrated on April 30th in northern Europe & Scandinavia. In Sweden typical holiday activities include the singing of traditional spring folk songs & the lighting of bonfires. In Germany the holiday is celebrated by dressing in costumes, playing pranks on people & creating loud noises meant to keep evil at bay. Many people also hang blessed sprigs of foliage from houses & barns to ward off evil spirits, or they leave pieces of bread spread with butter & honey, called ankenschnitt, as offerings for phantom hounds.
