Autumn 2023 Moon Phases, Solar Progression, Meter Showers, Eclipses, and more!
Tumblr media
Introducing a NEW section! Read on to find out more, or jump to WildHemlock.Com ->
Today is the Autumn Equinox, or the First Day of Fall in the Northern Hemisphere. Today, the Sun’s Ecliptic Path is intersecting with the Celestial Equator, and the Earth is facing the Sun at a perpendicular angle. This means the Earth’s Axial Tilt is neither facing towards nor away from the Sun. This gives us equal daytime and nighttime hours (on the equator!). To see a visual representation, check out the Solar Progression section:

Don't forget there is loads more going on in the skies this spooky season! Two Eclipses in October and the Geminid Meteor Shower gives a grand showing in December.

Summer Solstice & Summer 2023 Moon Phases
Tumblr media
Learn More at WildHemlock.Com!
Today is the Summer Solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere! The Summer Solstice marks the point in Earth’s orbit when the sun reaches its highest position in the sky, along the Sun’s Ecliptic Path. This zenith point is called the Tropic of Cancer, and the phenomena of disappearing shadows will occur at noon here. Because of the geocentric height of the Sun, it will stay above the horizon for a full day above the Arctic Circle. This is known as the Midnight Sun.

Moon Phases and More for May 2023
Tumblr media
Happy Beltane! Happy May Day! Happy Walpurgisnacht!
May 2023 enters with another eclipse, this time a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. On May 5th, the Moon will be cast in the Earth’s Penumbra and a Blood Moon will be visible in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.
Tumblr media
The next morning, wake up early and watch the η-Aquariids Meteor Shower. The best time to view it will be before dawn on May 6th. On May 17th, the Moon will occult (or completely hide) Jupiter. At the same time, Mercury will be in Geocentric Conjunction with the Moon. Add this to your astrophotography calendar!

April 2023 Moon Phases, Hybrid / Triple Eclipse, and More
Tumblr media
April 2023 has a special treat for us – a rare solar eclipse called a Hybrid Eclipse is set to take place on April 20th. A Hybrid Eclipse is also known as a Triple Eclipse. Later this month will be a great time to spot the dwarf planet Huamea and the asteroid Iris.
A Hybrid Solar Eclipse is named such because a Total Solar Eclipse, an Annular Solar Eclipse, and a Partial Solar Eclipse occur at the same time. This is also where it gets the name “Triple Eclipse.” These types of solar eclipses occur while the Moon is farther away from the Earth, allowing the Antumbra shadow to form. This shadow starts where the Umbra shadow of the Moon ends.

Happy Spring Equinox 2023!
Tumblr media
Happy First Day of Spring! or Vernal Equinox, a milestone of the Earth’s revolution around the sun. The day and night cycle is close to equal – about 12 hours and 10 minutes of sunlight here in Western Pennsylvania today. Today is halfway between the [approximately] longest day of the year in June and the shortest day in December. Flora and fauna are waking from their winter dormancy.
During the Equinox, the Sun’s Ecliptic Pathway crosses the Celestial Equator, as per the Glossary of Astronomical Phenomena:
Vernal Equinox – The intersection of the celestial equator and the sun’s ecliptic pathway in it’s northern ascent towards the tropic of Cancer. At this time, the Earth’s axial tilt is facing neither toward nor away from the sun, and there is approximately 12 hours of daylight and nighttime. This marks the beginning of the spring season in the northern hemisphere.
Tumblr media
Right now, night is receding and making way for longer, warmer days. It is time to get outside and enjoy it!

March 2023 Moon Phases, Spring Equinox, and More Astronomy
Tumblr media
Learn More at WildHemlock.Com!
This month, there are many Geocentric Conjunctions to view as well as the passage of time into Spring. The Vernal Equinox occurs on March 20th, 2023, marking the First Day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Tomorrow, March 2nd, there will be a double Geocentric Conjunction! Astrophotographers and amateur astronomers alike can catch both Mercury and Saturn together while Venus and Jupiter are also in conjunction. Later this month, Mars is in conjunction with the First Quarter Moon. I am sure there will be lots of great pictures of that!
On March 20th, the Sun crosses the Celestial Equator once again, following its Ecliptic Path across the sky. This point is called the Vernal, or Spring Equinox. The Axial Tilt of the Earth is now parallel to the Sun, so that our planet is neither tilting towards or away from the Sun. This results in approximately equal hours of night and day, giving the Equinox its name.

February 2023 Moon Phases & Astronomy
Happy Imbolc! It's a cold yet sunny day in Western Pennsylvania - Cailleach may be collecting firewood! Hopefully not. Phil will have the final word tomorrow over in Punxy.
Tumblr media
February 2023 is full of Occultations – where one celestial object obscures the view and hides another. Saturn will be in solar conjunction, which will hide the planet behind the Sun. Late this month, the Moon will occult Jupiter while being in geocentric conjunction with Venus. February ends with another occultation. This time Mars will disappear behind the Moon.
