Faith didn't doubt she'd be getting all up in the demon stink shortly -- but that sucked for Cordy, having unwanted smell-o-vision plus a ripping headache. Whoever was granting teenage girls their crappy destinies needed a swift kick in the almighty ass. Maybe the two of them could figure that out after saving the babies in danger, because what else about their lives was normal?
The Slayer still couldn't help but feel a nagging guilt for everything that had happened in the last 48 hours, but having a direction to point herself felt like a step in the right, well, direction. As long as the cops didn't try to bust her, which honestly was a possibility at this point.
"Well, if you need advice on how to make cup noodles more interesting, I'm your girl. That, or stealing dude's wallets," she suggested, not exactly having a ton of sympathy for Cordelia's cries of 'poor'. But Faith figured there was probably some culture shock for Sunnydale's former queen bee. A smirk crossed her lips seeing the pink helmet before the Slayer donned her own. But the look fell when Cordy continued. "I got a feeling I'll have to work up to the privilege of askin' Wes anything moving forward... But I'll be sure to bring the bike back in one piece."
Once the girls were both seated, Faith didn't waste much time roaring the engine to life. After all, there were bird demons ready to chow on some baby burritos if they weren't fast enough, right? Even if Cordelia wasn't going to navigate the blow by blow, Faith figured she'd do her best -- it was just a straight shot down Sunset Boulevard (Faith suggested the freeway and was met with some groans that indicated maybe that was a 'no'). She floored it through every yellow light, barely scraping by legal driving as she burned rubber. And it wasn't long at all before the girls pulled up on the park plaza with the large cross from Cordelia's visions.
"Olvera Street -- here it is. That look like what you saw in your head?" Faith swung herself off the bike, barely bothering to park it properly. Why did following the law have to take so long? If Wes got a parking ticket, so be it. She quickly dug through her bag, stuffing a knife in her boot and a stake in her pants pocket, giving Cordelia another look to make sure she'd be alright trailing behind. "If it's all the same to you, I ain't gonna wait up while there's a monster to kill."
"Yeah, try seeing it in four dimensions in your head," Cordelia groused, rubbing her forehead with one hand and snatching the notepad back with the other. Ripping out the page she'd written on, Cordelia crumpled it up and stuffed it into her purse - just in case they needed it again later. "I could even smell it."
Bizzaro world. Cordelia snorted at that description. Everything that went on in their lives, and Wesley riding a motorcycle was what got that out of Faith? Sure, the Wes she knew now was leaps and bounds away from the naive watcher with a stick he'd constantly held up his ass back in Sunnydale, but still. "Yeah, considering I'm also poor now and working for pretty much the most neutered vampire on the planet, that about sums it up."
Adjusting her bag to sit crossbody as they approached the bike, Cordelia shrugged. "Just hang on tight, right? Like it's really that hard?" She pulled out Wesley's helmets, keeping the spare for herself - somehow she doubted Faith would want the hot pink one, but she was more than happy with it, thank you very much - and tossing Faith the other. "Don't know. Ask him. Or don't, you know, given the torture and all, but he's had it since he showed up here," she answered absentmindedly, more focused on pulling the helmet firmly over her head and slipping onto the motorcycle behind Faith than sidetracking on Wesley's weird rebel phase.
"Think I might puke if I keep my eyes open right now," Cordelia muttered as she wrapped her arms around Faith. She didn't particularly want to be so up close and personal with the rogue Slayer right now, but she wanted to end up a splat across the pavement even less. "But I'll try. Just don't expect me to - ah!" Cordelia's words cut off with a squeal as Faith took off, leaving her to cling on even tighter for dear life.

Angel's belief in her was just about the only thing keeping her going these days.
Sure, Faith really did want to make good on the second chance she'd been offered (probably more than second, but she wasn't exactly keeping score since the big crash-and-burn). But prison wasn't exactly sleepaway camp, and the Slayer wasn't exactly getting postcards from home from loved ones. So having the vampire come visit, making time in his busy schedule of helping the helpless... it was something to put Faith on the right path forward. If no one else believed in her, Angel did. And maybe that was enough.
But not every day on the road to redemption was so straightforward was one foot in front of the other. Faith sat heavily in the chair she'd been pointed towards, her round, brown eyes lifting and brightening somewhat at the sight of her best friend. A fresh cut across her lip was gently crusted with dark red blood, and her small smile split the skin for a moment before the expression dropped.
Tumblr media
"Hey, Ainj," she said, her voice low and raspy. The slayer wasn't proud to admit having a bad day, but if she couldn't tell Angel, who could she tell? The prison shrink already gave her an earful and hell, she almost lost the privilege of a visit for the day. "Had a rough go of it today, honestly. I let a chick get under my skin and broke her nose... but don't worry, the guards got me back for it."
Honesty felt like admitting defeat, but... a slip up wasn't the end of the road, right? Especially if she knew it was wrong and wanted to do better...

it's become a sort of routine , even if the hours aren't great. back in a different life , he'd broken into his fair share of cells. for dinner or company or just to hear them scream. now , he waits in line under buzzing fluorescents , just one soul in a crowd of the visitors waiting to see a familiar face on the other side of some bulletproof glass. domesticated , he can almost hear spike's voice in the back of his head. it's taken too many years , but he's finally realizing that there are different ways to seek redemption. for himself. and for others.
@wickedlehane is easy to spot in the room , and he smiles as he makes his way over to the seat. it's not big , he doesn't exactly beam , but there's a kindness in it that only comes from understanding. and admiration. carefully , he lifts up the receiver as he takes a seat. like he has every week since her sentencing.
" how you holding up ? "

It was nice that Buffy at least didn't have delusions about what she could and couldn't stand when it came to walking in Faith's shoes.
But still, the brunette couldn't help but roll her eyes at the idea that just because Buffy acted so saintly meant she really knew better. "Yeah, well I've got a moral Swiss army knife. Maybe we'll get lost in the moral wilderness together," she teased. Wasn't her best work, but if this was a battle of slayage, she'd absolutely come out on top.
"Oh yeah, because it's my fault I'm so bad. I'm sorry, Buffy. Maybe if I try reeeeally hard, I can be half the hero you are," Faith said, again, her tone dripping with sarcasm. The idea that things didn't have to turn out like this almost made her laugh. Because it wasn't top of her to-do list either, but honestly, what had being good ever gotten her? Second fiddle to everyone's favorite do-gooder.
"I tried to play nice. I tried to do things your way. But you know what I saw? I saw a pretty blonde princess who couldn't share the spotlight for even a second. I saw your little gang of Scoobies elbowing me out every chance they got. And now that the Mayor has a place for me in his plans and I'm flying free, you want me playing backup for the good guys again. Living in your shadow," she said, her temper rising. "Face it, B -- you didn't really care what happened to me 'til I went out and got something good for myself."
she had saved her without thinking. maybe a part of her brain had to constantly remember that they weren't on the same side anymore. or maybe she wanted to believe that deep down faith could still change. buffy had failed her from the start and hadn't tried hard enough, but she had assumed that being a slayer meant that there was innate goodness inside of them. she was wrong and now she was paying the price of that.
"maybe i wouldn't have the guts." she knows enough to admit that, at least. but why would she want to be like faith? why would she want that type of behavior on her conscience, when she knows she can do better than that. "some of us have a moral compass, you know. we can't just go around doing whatever we want."
buffy wasn't unaware of the life that the other woman had lived. she'd heard snippets, or just enough so that she was somewhat aware of their differences. but to her, she just didn't understand why she turned out this way. what could she have done better? was it really apart of her job description to babysit slayers and make sure they didn't turn out to be evil? "i saved your life so that you could maybe want better for yourself. it doesn't have to be like this, faith."

@perfectionreached gets a little visit from a former soccer-slayer post-prison...
Tumblr media
Faith didn't exactly make it a habit to go tracking down her old teammates. For one, that made people real nervous, given that she was a convicted felon and all. Parole for good behavior didn't exactly mean a lot when the world could easily label you and shove you back in the box out of sight, on a high shelf. And some labels stuck pretty good, and even two decades of playing nice in the clink couldn't get the whispers of cannibal and murderer off tongues in the yard.
But it was a testament to her self-control those folks still had tongues at all.
Most of the Yellowjackets had faded out of the public eye, but not Taissa. No, in fact, she dove headfirst into the spotlight. Which made sense as to why Faith hadn't heard from her in a while -- not that anyone was reeeally keeping in touch with the slayer. Natalie tried, for a minute there. But even that faded off (rehab was mentioned once or twice), leaving Faith alone until being sent off unceremoniously with a gate card of $200 and a postcard addressed to her from an anonymous sender.
The last thing senator-hopeful Taissa Turner needed was a felon on her doorstep, and yet... Public servant. Public information (at least enough that Faith found her offices and several beleaguered interns on their way to lunch).
"Yeah, I know I don't have an appointment with her," she explained to an office aide who looked rather annoyed at the brunette's unexpected arrival. "But Tai and I go way back, to school."
"Columbia?"
"No, uh --" Just then, Faith spotted the woman in question and waved a hand to try to get her attention. "Hey, Tai. You got time for an old friend?"
She punctuated the question with a stern look back at the aide. If she didn't end up on her way back to jail in the next 2 minutes, Faith would call it a win no matter what came next.

The Slayer fell into a chopping rhythm pretty quickly, though she didn't have as much energy as she once had -- hunts had been turning up more and more scarce. She didn't blame Nat and Travis exactly, but she wondered if animals had really all started to hibernate and flee or if they just weren't being so careful. Faith quietly contemplated the odds that the wilderness would send them some sort of monster she could slay -- not that wishing for demons to appear at camp was exactly a great idea.
No one knew about her destiny-driven condition, though it looked like Van was starting to formulate some suspicions. Whatever, didn't matter -- they'd never believe her anyway, even if she told the truth.
Tumblr media
"He'd probably have a book of dead flesh in the basement if he did," Faith joked casually, clearing off the purported rot from the base of the tree. That shit wouldn't burn well anyways. "We're lucky the gun works as well as it does and no one's gotten hurt yet. But yeah, I think we're gonna run through a lot more when it gets real cold out."
It was an inevitability they weren't really talking about, but they were all adjusting in quiet ways. An extra layer here, more hot water there.
"Tch. Should make her just do some bicep curls with the full buckets. Either that or she's gotta make more trips." Faith didn't want to speak ill of the team captain -- hell, she wasn't technically Faith's captain, sitting down on JV. But that didn't really matter out here anymore, did it? They were all one team whether they liked it or not -- and everyone had to contribute. "You think we're gonna have anything half decent to eat tonight?"
Tumblr media
Maybe it was because of how bored she truly was or maybe it was because she knew what she sat. But all that was going through the goalies head was that she had just seen some straight up comic-book, superhero power type of shit. Even as the brunette moved to grab the axe, Van's eyes trailing after her as she stood there trying to process what had just happened. And how the other was trying to make it seem like it was nothing, that she hadn't seen Faith literally knock a whole fucking tree over.
It took her a minute to register that she'd been asked a question, eyes blinking and head shaking. "Uh...yea. Yea I'm fine," she muttered, hand falling from head to rest at side. Maybe it was just the boredom and being cooped up in the cabin more and more as the days were growing cooler. Maybe just maybe.
Tumblr media
Throat was cleared with a nod as they moved to lean against a still standing tree. "Too bad dead cabin guy didn't have a chainsaw...though I'm sure that wouldn't have ended well for any of us," Van mused, thinking that someone would have cut a limb off by now. She was surprised no one had yet with the axe, but here was knocking on wood that no one would. "Gonna have to start watchin' how much wood we use, huh?" they asked despite that being the furthest question from their mind.
What are you, how did you do that, I know what I fuckin' saw, all ran through the redheads mind as they watched the other. "Huh? Oh," they shrugged, "I think so, yea. And hell if I know...she always brings back half a bucket of water 'cause she slops it all over the place."

Faith wasn't sure what type of demon she'd latched onto, only that he'd be a dead one in a matter of minutes. She wrapped both her thighs around his torso as she pinned him to the ground and began to gleefully wail on him with her fists. Sure, his face was spikey and lumpy as hell and it was going to be murder on her knuckles -- but better than being murder on some innocents, right?
Tumblr media
The Slayer hardly reacted to the gunshots, but the woman's voice gave her pause. "Huh? Thanks," she said, sparing only a quick glance over her shoulder. It was time enough for the demon to flip Faith over, though, and she went rolling onto her side across the warehouse floor. She grunted in pain before pushing herself up.
Looked like the odds were a little uneven, but that never scared Faith. Even if she'd get an earful from Angel later telling her she needed to bring him along. But the slaying gig wasn't his destiny and he knew it, no matter how much he wanted to brood and play the Dark Avenger.
"Okay, creeps. How's this -- you beat me, I'll donate my body to your weird science. Whatever you want, it's yours. You just gotta kill me first. But if I kill you, deal's off?"
It wasn't her finest taunting, but she really just needed to buy some time to give the chick with a gun a moment to take more shots. That, and Faith was backing up towards a lead pipe that would probably make a reeeeal nice sound upside the head of one of these horned freaks. "Batter up, boys -- who's on first?"
Tumblr media
Imminent death was interrupted by a confident voice which soon became a blurred figure slamming into the demon about to kill her. Kate blinked rapidly as if it might help her to catch up with whatever the hell was going on. Both the creature and her saviour went flying from the momentum, giving her time to prop herself up onto her elbow to get a better look while she caught her breath back. Thankfully adrenaline had kicked in earlier, so while she knew she’d feel it later, the pain in her chest was fading from an agonizing ache into a dull yet present throb.
Kate’s first instinct was to get to her gun. Using one hand to cradle beneath her ribs and the other to drag herself across the floor, Kate grimaced, her fingers outstretched towards her weapon. Just as she lifted it to aim towards the fighting pair, she saw her rescuer taunting the demon and beating the crap out of it, no help necessary. Unfortunately, the rest of the demons were looking to tag themselves into the fight. Kate swung her right arm around to meet her left which she rose to steady her gun, firing several shots at the second demon’s chest before it could reach her new ally.
“Watch your back, there’s two more incoming,” Kate warned, struggling to get to her feet but managing it by using a nearby beam for leverage. Leaning against it, beads of sweat trickling down her forehead from the effort it took, Kate tried to figure out how her hero was kicking so much ass. What was it she’d called herself…? Slayer?

Faith laughed at Buffy's suggestion for the newsletter. "See, you get the idea. Who knew bein' Slayers came with the added perk of fashion police?" As if she was one to talk, clinging to her leather wardrobe as much as it clung back.
The brunette wiped her forehead with the back of her arm and gave a few more punches before starting to slow. Still, a smirk fixed on her lips as she let out the aggression she had pent up (which was never in short supply). "Yeah, a new record. Could go for a whole seven minutes in heaven. Maybe if we're lucky we'll get a real, honest night off."
Tumblr media
Faith didn't exactly believe B when she said Giles' wide side wasn't worth seeing. It was either an old British guy's definition of wild, or Blondie knew something she didn't. But maybe she ask the Watcher himself next time she saw him -- she could practically hear the stuttering now. "I'unno, B, his stuffy Watcher thing ain't so bad either. Kinda cute in that hot-for-teacher librarian way. Sorry, sorry -- I know you don't see him that way."
She rolled her eyes severely at Buffy's response. "You make it sound so lame. He's so much more than a stalker robot -- we're talking futuristic assassins, a sentient computer system, human rebellion on the brink of extinction, and Linda Hamilton lookin' hotter than any human has a right to while wearin' a tank top," she explained, already getting hot and bothered thinking about it. "Of course there'll be popcorn. Maybe we'll get a couple of Cokes too, or a pizza if I can scrounge up the change."
Tumblr media
It was obvious how different the impact of their calling was. Faith seemed to fall into the role of Slayer as if she was born for it; Buffy tried to return the ‘gift’ to the sender with a note explaining there must have been some kind of mistake. For the longest time she saw it as a burden, a job she’d been forced to take, turning her entire life upside down in the process. Kendra was the one who helped her to see things in a new light, and she would never forget that.
“Sounds tough,” Buffy sympathized, “but at least with two of us here that’s double the slayage. Maybe Sunnydale might finally stay safe for longer than five minutes; we could aim for a new record!” She smiled at Faiths’ magazine title - she had to admit, she’d probably read it. “Good idea, it could have an ‘outdated outfit of the week’ section so we can mock those silly vampires and their lack of fashion sense.”
Tumblr media
No matter how hard she tried to block out the memory of ‘Ripper’ behaving like a rebel teen, it came rushing back. Buffy grimaced, “trust me, you do not want to see Giles’ wild side.” She considered it, “actually, you’d probably like it more than the stuffy watcher side.” Shaking her whole body as if a ghost had stepped through her, Buffy thankfully remembered to keep the pads up. “Is that the one with the big guy who’s a stalker robot?” She gave Faith a sheepish look. "Okay so I haven’t seen them, but popcorn and stalker robots sounds like fun. There will be popcorn, right?”

Faith sighed, a little dramatically. Okay, fine -- Buffy of all people would know about dying, even when you didn't plan to. But it wasn't anything Faith couldn't (mostly) handle. "I'll try not to die next time too," she grumbled. "It would have definitely been more fun with you there, but y'know, the call of the wild."
It was a poor excuse. Maybe Faith just wanted to feel like she had something to contribute -- Buffy had this whole life outside of slayage... but for the brunette, this was her whole life. She spared a glance to the homework and gave a tired smile at the mention of Joyce's wrath. "Right... can't let that happen. I don't think there's anyone who could bring you back from that -- not even Big Red."
Still, the thought of a mother who cared enough made Faith's mood even lower. Joyce would never raise a hand to Buffy, she knew that. Her own mother, however...
"Yeah, yeah -- normal stuff mostly. This demon was big and bull-shaped. Probably could'a taken him for a ride if I had the extra help... and some rope," she said, wincing a little over her words. "Crap... If you got any ice I'll take it -- wicked headache on the way... How's the, uh, book learnin'?"
"you didn't die. this time." she stresses, looking around with a sigh. she could admit that she was hard on her - it wasn't like she wasn't self aware but she felt like she had to be. what if faith went out to patrol one of those days and got hurt? what if something went wrong? they might fight and argue, but there's something about the other woman that buffy wants to protect, too. "but can't change the past, i guess. next time i'd love a spare invite."
buffy was so used to blood, it wasn't even that part that bothered her. she watches as faith sits down, taking note of the bruises. she knew she'd heal soon, but it wasn't fun to see the other woman hurt. but she can't help but manage a laugh as she looks down at the homework that she had left on a nearby chair. "if i ditched the homework, it wouldn't be the vamps that would kill me - it would be my mother."
she supposes she could have brought the papers to the graveyard, worked on it in between kills, but that never seemed to let her have a full focus. with how her grades were looking at the moment, she could take any extra moment she could get on extra studying. "you are alright though? nothing too major out there tonight? just the normal insufferable demons?"
