This isnt a joke my favorite piece of writing advice that I’ve ever seen is someone that said if you were stuck with a fic and couldn’t figure out why or what was wrong, your problem is actually usually about ten sentences back. Maybe there was something wonky about the tone or the dialogue or you added something that didn’t fit but it’s usually ten sentences back. And every single time I get stuck in a fic I count back ten sentences and it’s always fucking there

Findekáno, Maitimo thinks, is most beautiful with his hair down.

He is always beautiful, of course - the way his eyes turn warm when they scan a room and come to light on silver and red hair, the way his smile never loses its ferocity even when it is only and solely for his husband, the way the shadows and the warmth of sunset play over his brown skin - and yet there is something about his hair, when it is free of its braids and its wires, that Maitimo cannot bring himself to look away from. It isn’t true black, as his mother’s is; her tight curls gleam blue when the light strikes them, where his are gold. And yet this deep darkness, the same dark as his eyes, so close to black they’re nearly the same, is a warm and welcoming thing he knows he could drown in.

When the braids are up, when each spiraling, kinking strand of hair is tucked into place, it is as if a part of him is walled off. Maitimo has said so before, in the aftermath of their lovemaking, and Findekáno laughs each time.

“Do you know how much work it takes to keep my hair in good condition?” he asks, voice low and quiet and rough-edged. “If I wore it down, I would have to spend far more of my day taking care of it. Írissë is constantly combing out knots, and I think Turukáno and my father bathe in hair cream to force out the frizz.”

I would live all my days by your side, and spend my hours easing out tangles, if it meant seeing your shoulders covered by curls more often, Maitimo thinks, and the warmth that surges between them always calls them back to coupling.

And yet, despite all this, he prides himself on his careful and intricate braiding, on how he always manages to let the wires with gems set into them shine at every angle and how he alone of all who work on his husband’s hair can manage to coax the smallest of strands into neat six-part lines, on how Findekáno beams at him whenever they pass a mirror. He had spent so much of his time in Beleriand in frustration, unable to dedicate entire days to brushing and washing and painstaking, agonizingly slow work, threading in and out and over and under, and some small part of him had died each time he’d been forced to lay eyes on braids he had not made.

Now, though, was different. Egress from Mandos had meant a new hröa and new hands, long-boned fingers to match one another, and he was grateful to lose weeks on end to braiding and unbraiding and rebraiding again. There was nothing to do in Aman anymore, save await the inevitable Dagor Dagorath, and now that their house was built on the shore of a lake that had come to be claimed as theirs, each and every hour was entirely and completely free of any obligation. Somehow, after all the strife and strangulation of duty and family, they had emerged intact, staring down eternity.

And there was no better way to spend it than lost in the complete trust and intimacy than offered up each time Findekáno didn’t bother even tying his hair back away from his shoulders.
