Tolkien Theory Time
I posit that in the Palantir one of the many possible futures Sauron caused Lord Denethor to see was a future that when both his sons had died there was no hope for Gondor. That this was somehow a sign of things he had seen. Losing Boromir was the first crack but so long as Faramir lived there was a glimmer that maybe Gondor would somehow survive and that there was a purpose in continuing to strive against the Dark Tower then when Faramir returns near enough to death to be mistaken for dead the last tiny thread of Denethor's hope and sanity snaps and with his city nearly in ruins he's like 'yep this is definitely the doomed future I saw in the Palantir one there's no purpose in living any longer when all is lost' and decides to turn himself and his son into a human smore party.

Sorry, I'm just thinking about how hobbits are unknown to almost everyone out of the Shire... but whenever they go out they make such friends everywhere... and they are remembered so dearly for decades...

For some reason the idea of Elros just coming around to visit Feanor and sons in the Void is not leaving me be. Like on his way to Iluvatar he makes a pitstop or something, I dunno.

have a bunch of finarfin headcanons because this world needs more finarfin headcanons
his hair glows in the dark post-Darkening. It's a subtle golden light, though it can become more bright depending on his emotional state
he didn't have a patron while he was young, but as he grew older, his Valie of choice became Estë
he loves woodworking - when he was younger and lived in Alqualondë, he would often help in the docks to repair/construct ships
he loves the sea more then he loves the city, though for the long time during his kingship he would forbid himself to even think about possibility of returning there
He would always try to connect with his kids through shared activities. He would listen to Aegnor reciting his poetry and would sometimes go hiking with Finrod; he thaught Angrod surfing; he couldn't find an activity to share with Galadriel - she wasn't much of a team player and loved doing things by herself, so eventually Finarfin learned to step back and give her space she needed.
he is subtle - and also I apply Tolkien's "the hands of the king are the hands of a healer" to him a lot. He doesn't purposefully draw attention to himself, but he's always there. He makes sure every problem is fixed even before you notice it's there. He listens to what his people want and does it without a second thought.
He becomes close with Amarie. She is his right-hand woman, of sorts
He experiences hallucinations (more accuratly, psychotic depression) post-Doom. First he would hear laughter and banter in empty house. Sometimes it would be accompanied by music - piano and violines, the instruments his children used to play. Later, he would see his family, though they would never speak to him directly. He saw Eärwen a few times, and every time he was sure she was real - she was the only hallucination that never seemed unreal to him.
He suffers from chronic pain post-WoW
During WoW, his most used weapon (and most favored one) is his spear

When Faramir confessed his love to Éowyn, can we talk about how he said that he still would have loved her were she the queen of Gondor??? You’re telling me that hypothetically speaking, Faramir would have fallen for her regardless of outcome??? It was inevitable???
Like imagine this utterly devastating alternate universe: Faramir becomes Steward of Gondor, so he would have eventually crossed paths with Éowyn anyway had she married Aragorn. AND HE WOULD STILL FALL IN LOVE WITH HER BUT IT HURTS KNOWING HE CAN NEVER BE WITH HER (remember this is hypothetical pls don’t hurt me)
I mean thank god things turned out the way they did but he was basically saying to her that he would have fallen for her even if they didn’t end up together??? MY HEART—

Do you think that after the events of The Hobbit the wood-elves found out how the dwarves escaped in barrels and started referring to all scandals as “water-gate”

man boromir was just a guy. he was just a man. he just wanted to keep his people and homeland safe and bore the weight of the world on his shoulders his whole damn life and always had to do it alone and never fail. and then getting told in his last living moments that he didnt fail? that at the end of the day, he overcame the ring and died boromir, rather than some corrupted shell of himself, and that was what mattered? and being comforted all the while? man

Fundamentally you’ve got to understand about me that I’m adherent to the “orcs became orcs by choice” theory. And everything else goes from there
Like listen it could be SO GOOD. Tolkien’s understanding of what “good” and “evil” and “innocent” and “fallen” are is so so deeply Christian/Catholic and I thought we didn’t like that on this website?? (tr*dc*th Tolkien fandom don’t interact) So why is barely anyone applying transformative fandom to his elves vs orcs lore?? Like what if during the Cuivienen era a few elves just made their way to Utumno and asked for protection, simply bc they saw the fires in the darkness and went “sweet, civilization!”? And Melkor said “sure” and gave them big muscles and cool claws and tusks so that they could defend themselves better in the wilderness? There is so much here listen–
It can be about rejecting conventional views of what is “ugly” or “savage” and seeing beauty in the big beefy form of an orc. It can be about rejecting forced Christianization. It can be about choosing to slide downwards into the community of the Othered Lil Nas stripper pole into hell style. It can be about embracing nuance and really thinking about why certain groups of people make certain decisions in the course of statecraft and culture and civilization instead of staying beholden to a false good vs evil dichotomy. It can be about reading the Silm as propaganda and really getting into why the elves and men would not understand what orcs are about and choose to pass them off as homogenously evil. It can be about asking tough questions about why some people are Othered anyway. It could be about ditching the boring ass “orcs are redeemable bc they were once elves” nonsense and settling at “orcs are redeemable NO MATTER WHAT”! It could be about rad transhumanism themes. There is an untapped goldmine here just listen—

Something I really appreciate about LotR is how much everyone just adores Bilbo. Frodo loves him unconditionally, never gets spiteful about how Bilbo left him or gave him the most cursed Ring in the world, he just has cute hobbit cuddles with him and tells him "I'm afraid I lost it". Aragorn is so kind to him, teases him gently, comes specifically to visit him and helps him with his songs. And Elrond! Elrond literally lets him live in his house and basically adopts him, and he's just so kind and considerate, doesn't even mind when Bilbo's singing about Earendil in front of everyone. During the Council, no one laughs at Bilbo or makes fun of him for wanting his lunch or tells him to shut up when he rambles about his adventures. Gloin is the only one who even smiles, and his smile comes from good memories. Everyone knows Bilbo, and everyone loves him. Except for the Sackville-Bagginses, but they're special.
