I've been playing Balatro a deck building roguelike videogame. Deck Building Roguelikes are a sub-genre of roguelikes. In roguelikes when you die you restart the game fresh. The way you play this game is by drawing playing cards and playing combinations in a series of increasing challenges. As you progress you get joker cards that modify the action of cards you play.  

I have also been listening to financial planning podcasts while doing so. There is a synergy of the two. We make choices in our career that commit us to strategies. Sometimes we understand how combinations will work together like with degrees, partners, or hobbies. Sometimes we are surprised by the reality of life like global pandemics, bike crashes, or injury. We need to hedge against inflation, mortality, and market failures. In the game, sometimes the cards and modifiers are at odds, sometimes resulting in a non-starter deck that fails in the first round. Each time I replay this game I experiment and play. Life doesn't have do overs and somehow these roguelikes appeal to my natural curiosity and joy in experimentation while also assuaging my fear of death and desire for novelty. 

Balatro is a Masterpiece.
