Poet’s corner: Gwen Harwood
“The warmth of human lips and thighs;
the lifeless cold of outer space; this windy darkness; Scorpio
above, a watercourse of light;
the piercing absence of one face
withdrawn for ever from my sight.” (Gwen Harwood, Last Meeting).
I find her poems incredibly moving.
She often mixes intense imagery of wild and windy Australian landscapes with profound themes of aging and death.
‘Last Meeting’ is relevant to a moment in my life one year ago, and I’ve included an image of a place very close to my heart.
