1960s Psychedelia and its Art Nouveau Influences

If you're familiar with older music, you've probably seen the famous music posters and handbills of the 1960s. Featuring vibrant colors and lurid designs, these advertisements sought to absorb and reflect the contemporary cultural ideas of revolution, psychedelia, and free love.

The artistic styling of these posters was strongly influenced by the Art Nouveau movement that had taken Europe and America by storm over half a century before. Art Nouveau took inspiration from nature to create architecture, interior design, and fine art with lurid, organic shapes, a direct contrast to the square, gray cityscapes of the Industrial Revolution in the late 1800s/1900s.

See below the metro entrances designed by Hector Guimard, installed in Paris between 1900 and 1912; The Kiss (1907) by Gustav Klimt; the Pond Lily Table Lamp (1903) created by Louis Comfort Tiffany, heir to Tiffany & Co.

But why was Art Nouveau so popular with the artists behind music posters in the Summer of Love?

Although Art Nouveau pieces often depict scenes of harmony, simplicity, and love, the movement itself had existed as a form of revolution, a call for a return to peace with nature. Likewise, the hippie movement and other counterculture scenes of the 1960s were in part a rebellion against the strict cultural hegemony of the post-World War II era. The children of the suburban Baby Boom generation just now coming into adulthood saw in Art Nouveau a similar yearning for change and harmony with Mother Earth.

The congruence between these two movements is undeniable. Several famous music posters of the late 1960s even directly lifted figures from Art Nouveau paintings, most often from the work of the famed Czech commercial artist Alphonse Mucha.

Like the quickly evolving landscape wrought by the Industrial Revolution at the turn of the century, the 1960s were also a time of great cultural upheaval. The hippie, Civil Rights, and anti-war movements drove young people to protests and concerts featuring experimental new music and new ideas. The artists behind the music posters of the era turned to Art Nouveau to reflect a similar time of cultural change, as well as the re-emerging desire to connect to nature seen within the hippie movement.

Alphonse Mucha was famous for his hundreds of paintings featuring women, whom he often used to depict natural forces such as weather or the change of seasons. Norman Orr, an artist for the 1960s musician Bill Graham, was inspired by the "sensuality of the graceful, flowing lines of the Mucha's work and the way that the female form was combined with the sensuality of the line work."

The sensual female form employed by Mucha (and much of Art Nouveau in general) was combined with the drug-fueled psychedelia of the time to create the famous eye-catching posters, perfectly reflecting the cultural fervor of the late 1960s. The posters themselves became valued collectors items, taken home by the young, revolution-minded fans who flooded the cities where these musicians played.

Today we can empathize with the emotions these posters convey. Like the artists of the Industrial Revolution and their audiences, the counterculture youth of the late 1960s sought revolutionary change. Artists of the time naturally drew inspiration from the art of a previous revolutionary period with similar sentiment. Could another rebirth of Art Nouveau be approaching as our generation fights the climate crisis and rebels in music and on the streets?

Rise of the TMNT

Given that I’ve used Rise of the TMNT (RotTMNT) GIFs in nearly all of my TMNT posts, it’s funny that I had never watched the show until today (I grew up with the 2k12 show).

And did I walk into a landmine with RotTMNT. Apparently it got canceled with half a season left to go AND a movie coming out this year?! How does that even happen? 

And the show doesn’t have an origin story episode (at least of the 8 or so episodes I’ve watched so far). You’re just dropped into a world in which the turtles don’t really practice ninjitsu, Splinter watches anime all day and goes to sleep after “milk time” and so far their main villain is a mutant worm news anchor. And it just continues on in a break neck pace from there. 

I haven’t had a spare moment to determine if I actually like the show yet but I’ll plug through it until I finish the whole thing before my free week trial of Paramount+ ends or I’m defeated by yet another 22 minutes of incessantly confused screaming. I assume it gets better from here?

At dinner, Roxanne casually brings up marriage, causing Megamind to do a spit-take. She then clarifies that when they get married, she won’t change her name to Roxanne Megamind. Megamind decides that he would change his name to Megamind Ritchi.

Highlights

The characterization is pretty decent. While this story is very short, this is a conversation I could imagine these two having and Megamind’s reaction is in character.

The warm writing style and word choices really convey their love for each other and the comfort they feel together. 

Critiques

Roxanne tells Megamind she won’t be taking his name when they marry, but is Megamind’s last name Megamind? Or does he have a secret last name? Isn’t a last name a requirement for tax purposes?...Does Megamind pay taxes??

A song fic set to a series of Oh so 2010 “relentlessly energetic dance songs” (including “Ya Mama” by Fatboy Slim and “Tribal Dance” by 2 Unlimited) in which Michelangelo wakes everyone up at 5:30 a.m. with blaring music and forces April and his brothers into a reluctant dance contest. 

Highlights

“[April] was a better dancer than any of them. She went out to clubs a lot, plus she had a flexible spine.” 

Mikey dances to “Bla Bla Bla” by Gigi D’Agostino and the author kindly included the lyrics of “A A Ben/Warem a Ben Ben/Warem Ben Ben Ben...”

“Mikey loved watching Raph dance. He was like a crazy person. But a crazy person who was a bitchin’ dancer. It was probably because he had no real sense of self-preservation.” 

Raphael dances to “Ya Mama” and that’s a fun scene to imagine. 

Critiques

Mikey is an asshole and apparently needs to be constantly handcuffed to things so his brothers can get some peace and quiet. 

We didn’t get to see Donatello’s dancing :(

Besides some great lines that got a chuckle out of me (which I included in my highlights) and some fun dance moments, I was too irritated by Mikey to fully enjoy the story. If he wasn’t going so far out of his way to annoy his brothers for no reason, this story would have been more fun.

In this Scooby-Doo fanfic inspired by the song “Bust Your Windows” by Jazmine Sullivan (which the author heard on her Glee CD), Daphne is jealous that Fred played mini golf with other girls and so she sneaks to Fred’s house in the middle of the night and busts out the windows of the Mystery Machine with her heels, then gets into a physical altercation with Fred in his boxers.  

Highlights

We get an outfitttt descrippptioon! Daphne is wearing denim short shorts, a purple tank top, and purple high heels! Yesss

The poor author doesn’t know how breaking glass works. Each time Daphne strikes the window the hole just gets bigger and bigger instead of, you know, the whole windshield shattering. 

“Fred ran out in only his boxers, for that was what he slept in during the summer.”

Daphne tells Fred, “Well you busted my heart” then drives home in her purple Mercedes Benz

Critiques

[[TW: abuse]] Daphne physically abuses Fred here (”he just let the redhead beat him as long as she wanted”) and it’s framed as “girlboss”. 

This fic is hilarious in its absurdity but it’s kind of sad that the media has given this young author the idea that it’s okay to destroy someone’s car and abuse them over a mundane breakup (Fred didn’t cheat on her, all he did was play mini golf with another woman)

Who is Daphne here???? She wouldn’t do something as crass as destroy a car over a dumb breakup.

Aang watches Katara sleep, remembering about the time he accidentally burned her. He ponders his fear of fire-bending and his love for Katara and realizes that love and fire have a lot in common. 

Highlights

Besides the fact that Aang was staring at Katara as she slept, this was really cute! 

The story ties together a lot of events of the show and feels like a real thought process Aang might’ve had.

Critiques

Like in the show, I’m a little creeped out here by Aang’s concept of love (”Dangerous”, “Rabid” and “Careless” are some words he used here). This fic could have done more to examine his possessive behavior towards Katara.

An unspecified turtle has been killed by Shredder. Splinter, April, Casey Jones, and the other turtles drive his coffin out to the Jones’s farm and hold a funeral, while Splinter reminisces on the child he’s lost to a violent death (and the possibility of losing all his other sons) and everyone cries. This fic is rated K, for “kid-friendly,” or maybe “killed brother.”

Highlights

Uhhh...the author really nailed the fucking depressed tone?

The headstone says “1989-2004″ so at least it was one of the turtles from the 4Kids series that died. 

Critiques

Isn’t it a little gruesome to end your story asking the reader to guess who was murdered? 

The story would have been much improved if there had been dialogue and Splinter could reminisce on specific memories of the specific son he lost. Why was it made a guessing game?

Story #10 on page 25: “Change is Not Always Good” by ProGamer363 (Jan 23, 2011)

One day a year after Tighten’s defeat, Roxanne wakes up in Megamind’s lair, alone and bleeding profusely. After she escapes the crumbling building, she remembers what happened that led to her predicament. This all started when she ran into an angry Bernard at Starbucks and Megamind developed telekinesis. Then in chapter 3, the author “puts the story up for adoption” for someone else to (never) finish.

Highlights

Starting the story off with Roxanne’s predicament was a great way to draw in the reader, though the gore description was a little lengthy. 

Roxanne awkwardly running into the man her boyfriend impersonated for weeks at a Starbucks was quite funny. 

The writing is mostly strong for what I assume is a young author. 

Critiques

Of all the Megamind stories I’ve read, almost none have given any character to Roxanne. In the movie she’s sassy, brave, and compassionate, but in fic she’s a talking brick wall. 

Unfinished and I actually wanted to know what happened!!

Story #22 on page 168: “Bamboo” by Herehopelies (June 15, 2011)

In this oneshot, we explore the backstory of Lord Shen (the peacock villain in the second movie) and how he invented gunpowder weapons. He was a sickly, strange child who had to earn his parents’ affection but his drive to impress them went too far. He murders a village of pandas and is banished from Gongmen City, leaving his parents to wither away in grief. 

Highlights

The writing is, for the most part, very well done. A very somber and sad tone.

The backstory given to Lord Shen made sense for his character. That people see him as a bad omen because of his albino feathers was an interesting addition. 

Creative playing with color in the story. Shen is the color of mourning, his red eyes the color of good luck. 

I like the allusion to future events of Kung Fu Panda 2, such as the movie’s line about wounds healing and scars don’t being part of Shen’s backstory as well as Po’s. 

Criticisms

The reason for Shen murdering the panda village is not explained. In the movie he did so to avoid his fate of being defeated by a “warrior of black and white” but in this story he doesn’t know that prophecy. 

After murdering an entire village, the most Shen’s parents do is give him house arrest. 

Shen’s interest in gunpowder weapons is kind of dropped halfway through and not mentioned again.

Story #2 on page 34: “Life Circle” by Margot-Eve (Sept 26, 2011)

In this AU story, Roxanne is walking around Metro City park, musing about fall, when she bumps into famous inventor Megamind (or Khe’rthan as he prefers to be called). They have a philosophical conversation about the seasons and then have a coffee date and go to his apartment. Roxanne expects to see him again the next day but she gets the news he died in a car accident. But like the seasons, each death holds the promise of new life. She is pregnant. 

Highlights

Roxanne remembers the “words of her mother”. Here they are:  “Sometimes we meet people who feel close to us, even if we have only known them a few seconds. Those people are part of our souls. When we meet them, our lives become more complete. And no matter how short the time we had with them, they always change us somehow.” Roxanne, what was the context for your mother giving you this speech??

The tone is whimsical and detached, which is what the author was going for. I could see this author going on to be a skilled writer.

I like Megamind’s name, Khe’rthan. Very alien-y. 

Critiques

Roxanne, when you have sex with a weird scientist man you ran into at a park, use protection!!

The story doesn’t say, but I really want to know if Megamind was still a blue, giant-headed alien in a spandex suit here. 

The reveal that Megamind died in a car accident was so sudden I snorted. This fic is only 700-something words long and so much went down lol

Krypto is playing frisbee with “Kevin” (I don’t remember who the characters are) and then sees two bad guys. He flies after them and takes them down with the help of “Streaky the Supercat” (I remember an orange cat with a bad New Jersey accent). Then they play in the mud and Streaky’s owner gives him a bath. 

Highlights

Each line of text is centered in the middle of the page so it’s like reading some kind of abstract poetry. 

We get two separate stories in only 309 words!

Critiques

I think I should have gone the rest of my life without reminding myself of the orange cat named Streaky with a bad NJ accent.

Is the lesson, “Don’t catch bad guys or you’ll need to take a bath?”

Story #14 on page 43: “our blue defender done it again!” by guri-n (Mar 17, 2011)

Like many, many fanfictions, our story begins with the protagonist, Megamind, opening his “vibrent green eyes” and tumbling out of bed as he reflects on his life and his outfit choices (bat slippers with glowing red eyes). 

Megamind is exuberant, but exhausted. It’s his second day as a hero. He wakes up and walks into the kitchen where Minion is making breakfast. The newspaper story is about his victory. Our story ends with Megamind about to take his first bite of toast. 

Highlights

Stories written by young children always have a unique charm to them. I’m wondering which writing program the author used that didn’t leave their page a string of angry red squiggles. My favorite typo is “the morning sun shun” 

The warmth of the sun is “impregnating his blue skin but also the bottom of his heart” (I snorted)

I love that although the story is rated K+, the author promises they’ll be bumping the rating up to M [mature] in future (nonexistent) chapters. 

Critiques

The somewhat charming typos and grammatical errors do end up causing a couple nearly indecipherable sentences. 

The author called Megamind “Daddy” at one point and I’m uncomfortable

We don’t even get to know if Megamind enjoyed his breakfast! :(

The author probably went on to learn this in like 6th grade but beginning a story with a character waking up and doing nothing of import doesn’t draw readers in

Not enough outfit description! I want every minute detail. It’s a fanfic requirement to spend 300 words of a 433 word story on unnecessary descriptions.

Story #17 on page 322: “Question of Cake” by Little Cakey Stars (Feb 19, 2015)

In our little 211-word story, our author interviews the characters of Gravity Falls about their favorite cake flavors. A small crisis occurs when it discovered that Dipper has never had cake before, but it is resolved with cake.

This story was obviously written by someone very young and it exuded “lol so RaNdOm” humor, but I found it charming! It’s something I definitely would have written around 2012, when I identified a lot with Mabel and had a very similar sense of humor to the author. 

I usually do a rating with each story and grade the characterization, the creativity, and the enjoyability, but given that barely anything happens and the characters barely speak, I’ll forego that for this story.

Long Fic Analysis: “All Our Secrets Laid Bare” Chs. 9 & 10

Summary of Events: Draco is jealous of David and Harry’s “relationship” but David, who has broken up with Harry, helps get it into Harry’s thick skull that Draco is into him. Harry confesses his feelings to Draco and they go on a date and have their first kiss. The next day they get called to a Death Eater safe house and end up in a duel with a Death Eater. To have the strength to produce the Fiendfyre countercurse, Draco does blood magic to draw on Harry’s power. The magic has a side effect of making them horny for the next few hours (it was an ancient marriage spell) so they go back to Harry’s place and dry hump. 

Highlights:

Harry felt so in-character in these chapters! It’s so like him to not notice that Draco is into him, then when he’s told Draco is jealous of his relationship, to not realize the obvious until someone hammers it into his brain. Oh, Harry. 

I looove the lore-building in this fic! So many Harry Potter fanfictions ignore magic or under-utilize it, but this story is creating interesting spells with history behind them and everything. I love it!

The scene in the safe house was so well-written! Draco confronting his trauma from the first time he experienced Fiendfyre was great and the scene as a whole was action-packed and suspenseful.

Harry is very sweet and slow-going with Draco, as this is Draco’s first real relationship. 

Harry apologizes to Draco for being an asshole by sorting through 157 boxes of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans to get one box of envelope glue-flavored beans, which he knows are Draco’s favorite. 

Critiques:

While I liked David, he felt pretty shoe-horned in. Showed up for 2 chapters to create a brief love triangle and smack some sense into Harry, and then he’s gone.

The blood magic making Draco and Harry horny was pretty cheesy.
