Yet more miscellaneous thoughts about my modern cultivation au (wherein Meng Yao is a disciple of Yunmeng Jiang and becomes frienemies with Wei Wuxian):
Lan Wangji becomes good friends with both Wen Qing and Mian Mian. Wei Wuxian likes to joke that Lan Wangji is surprisingly popular with the ladies, which frustrates Lan Wangji to no end, because 1. he is gay, 2. he is in love with Wei Wuxian, and 3. his friendship to Wen Qing and Mian Mian was born out of wlw/mlm solidarity. Wen Qing and Mian Mian, on their part, can’t believe that Lan Wangji actually has a crush on the densest man on the planet.
Nie Huaisang identifies as genderqueer and goes by them/them pronouns. They “misplace” their saber at any given opportunity, determined not to cultivate in the traditional Qinghe Nie Sect fashion. However, Nie Huaisang does learn to cultivate with a fan, with the help of Meng Yao and Wei Wuxian. Meng Yao is the one who suggests the idea, and Wei Wuxian is the one who makes it work. Even after Nie Huaisang begins to perfect their new cultivation style, however, they still prefer to make excuses for why they can’t go out on the more dangerous night hunts. They know their strengths, and they know that night hunting is not one of them.
A-Yuan ends up experiencing a similar trauma to Wei Wuxian, in which he and his family are trapped in a crypt with a bunch of angry fierce corpses for betraying the Qishan Wen Sect. He survives, but like Wei Wuxian, the amount of resentful energy he was subjected to leaves his qi channels permanently damaged. Wei Wuxian is the one who rescues him, and afterwards he becomes a mentor figure to A-Yuan, teaching him how to resist the negative side effects of resentful energy. It is not long before A-Yuan starts thinking of Wei Wuxian as his dad.

Taking Prompts!
This is a brand new au, and there is a lot of land to cover
Basically this is a modern cultivation au wherein Meng Yao is a disciple of Yunmeng Jiang and becomes frienemies with Wei Wuxian
They are experts in demonic cultivation and are often asked to consult on cases for other sects, especially when it comes to cursed artifacts that are too dangerous for a non-demonic cultivator to handle. Jiang Cheng also tags along, mostly because he doesn’t like feeling left out, but also because he has Zidian in case things get especially hairy.
Featuring wangxian, xiyao, xuanli, chengqing, and a whole lot of pining.

Even more miscellaneous thoughts about my modern cultivation au (wherein Meng Yao is a disciple of Yunmeng Jiang and becomes frienemies with Wei Wuxian):
Due to an particularly traumatic and life-altering event in Wei Wuxian’s childhood, wherein he got stuck inside a trap away within a haunted forest for several months, he is unable to form a golden core, due to his qi channels being too damaged. However, he has a higher than normal resistance to resentful energy, and can still use talismans. Because of this resistance, Wei Wuxian is often recruited by other sects when it comes to finding and handling items teeming with harmful resentful energy
Both the Yunmeng Jiang and Lanling Jin Sects become interested in the subject of demonic cultivation, basically turning it into its own field of study. Disciples are still forbidden from practicing it, but are free to conduct experiments using resentful energy so long as they have taken proper precautions and have been given permission from the Sect Leader. Yunmeng Jiang is known for being more careful in regards to their experiments, while the Lanling Jin Sect likes to test the boundary of what is or what is not acceptable in the eyes of the public
Jin Zixuan himself doesn’t have anything to do with demonic cultivation, though. Nor does Jin Guangshan. That is what the outer disciples (non-blood related disciples) are for
Wei Wuxian and Meng Yao are considered to be two of the best experts in the field of demonic cultivation, and Jin Guangshan frequently tries to recruit Meng Yao to join his side, but Meng Yao has practically been raised by the Jiang family (mostly by Jiang Yanli) and has grown too attached to them (or, more accurately, Jiang Yanli) to betray them
After Jin Zixuan started being a dick to Jiang Yanli during adolescence, Meng Yao nearly saw red and gave Jin Zixuan a piece of his mind. This led to Jin Zixuan realizing he liked Jiang Yanli back much sooner. When the happy couole get married and Jiang Yanli moves to the Lanling District, Meng Yao misses Jiang Yanli’s presence so much that he almost regrets his involvement. But at least they still live in the same city, and the three punks of Yunmeng try to visit their jiejie/shijie as often as possible

Some more miscellaneous thoughts about my modern cultivation au (wherein Meng Yao is a disciple of Yunmeng Jiang and becomes frienemies with Wei Wuxian):
Wei Wuxian has both adhd and an anxiety disorder. He is also a caffeine addict. For him, caffeine is a double-edged sword. It helps him stay focused and also gives him a nice little serotonin boost, but he has to snack continuously throughout the day, or else he gets jittery, and can more easily spiral into a panic attack
Lan Wangji is autistic. When he gets overstimulated, he likes to find a secluded space where he can pet Yin and Yang, his pet rabbits. He also carries pieces of guqin strings in the sleeves of his robes to pluck at when he feels the need to start stimming
When it comes to outfits, the Gusu Lan Sect is really the only one that is still strict about how their disciples dress. They are encouraged to wear their hair long, and to don traditional robes. And of, course, they still have their head bands. The other sects do have their own signifiers (Yunmeng Jiang has the clarity bells, Lanling Jin the crimson dots on the forehead, Qinghe Nie with their giant sabers, and Qishan Wen with red tattoos), but they allow each disciple the freedom to wear either more traditional or modern clothing, as long as a majority of their clothes are in the Sect colors
Wei Wuxian of course dresses more modern, kind of like a mix between a punk and a skateboarder. He mostly wears black, with accents of red and purple. He also has his ears pierced. Wei Wuxian wears his hair around shoulder-length, and cut that short he naturally has some really nice gravity-defying curls. Lan Wangji could build a temple to those curls
The Gusu Lan Sect has invented a spell that “silences” all technology in a certain range, which makes it impossible to text in class. Wei Wuxian quickly found that out in his adolescence, when he took a summer course on purification rituals in Gusu Lan, and nearly lost his mind (or so he claimed) due to boredom
The various sects all live in the same huge metropolitan city, just in separate districts, so disciples have many opportunities to hang out with friends from other sects. In fact, disciples are often encouraged to learn from other sects through taking summer courses and such

I’m thinking about a possible name for my modern cultivation au (wherein Meng Yao is a disciple of Yunmeng Jiang and he becomes frienemies with Wei Wuxian)
I was thinking something along the lines of Three Punks of Yunmeng Jiang (y’know, in contrast to the Twin Jades of Gusu Lan), because Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, and Meng Yao totally develop a reputation for solving cases in the least professional manner possible
(The best part is everyone treats Meng Yao as tho he is the one sane guy in the trio, but in reality he is often the mastermind behind their strange stunts. Wei Wuxian will just naturally take all the blame because of his hero complex. Jiang Cheng is along for the ride so he can do both damage control and also because he doesn’t like being left out)

Some miscellaneous thoughts about my modern cultivation au (wherein Meng Yao is a disciple of Yunmeng Jiang and becomes frienemies with Wei Wuxian):
Things are often weird between Meng Yao and Jin Zixuan, because they both know that they’re half-brothers, but Meng Yao made a vow to never talk about it, and Jin Zixuan is super socially awkward. That being said, Jin Zixuan tries his best to act like a big brother despite 1. Never verbally acknowledging that they are brothers, and 2. Not having a single clue about what older brothers are supposed to act like
Mo Xuanyu also becomes a disciple of Yunmeng Jiang at a young age, after his mother hears of Meng Yao’s success. Madam Yu complains that their sect is slowly becoming an orphanage for Jin Guangshan bastards. Mo Xuanyu still follows Meng Yao around like a lost puppy, but Wei Wuxian is the one who dotes on him as though he’s Mo Xuanyu’s older brother
Lan Wangji still has his two rabbits. This time, however, he trains them to become spiritual companions, like Jin Ling’s spiritual dog Fairy. Their names are Yin and Yang and they help lure enemies away from civilians and into the range of Lan Wangji’s sword and guqin. Lan Wangji maintains that they are not pets, so he is not breaking any rules. Lan Qiren begs to differ, but he is outnumbered by Lan Xichen and Qingheng-jun, as well as the numerous junior disciples who practically worship Yin and Yang
Cultivators are basically akin to celebrities in the eyes of the general public. Wei Wuxian never misses an opportunity to flirt with any flustered mundane girl he comes across, to Lan Wangji’s never-ending frustration. This often includes Wei Wuxian showing the girls skateboarding tricks that he can do on his sword
Both Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng know that Meng Yao has a crush on Lan Xichen, so they assume that he’s gay (instead of bi, because they don’t realize bisexuality is a thing, even tho Wei Wuxian IS bisexual). Because of this, they’re always turning to Meng Yao to gently interrogate young women, because they’ve seen too many tv shows and movies where women spill all their secrets to their sassy gay friend. Meng Yao doesn’t bother to correct them because it means that he gets to spend time with Jiang Yanli without the two brothers constantly badgering him about his “intentions”. Meng Yao sometimes needs a big sister, too, okay?
Speaking of Jiang Yanli, she absolutely also decides that Mo Xuanyu is now her younger brother, too. She keeps collecting new baby brothers like it’s going out of style, and no, she will not stop, thank you

👀 How did Meng Yao end up in Yunmeng Jiang?
Oh, amazing question!!
Since this takes place in a modern world, Meng Shi once tried to take Jin Guangshan to court once she learned that he had no intention of actually taking care of Meng Yao as his son, but unfortunately Jin Guangshan’s lawyers were the best money could buy, and Meng Shi was forced to settle for a one time payment and a nondisclosure agreement
(Is that how law works? Let’s just pretend it is and that the preceding paragraph does not sound like utter gibberish)
Anyway, Meng Shi was terribly distraught, and poor young Meng Yao was heartbroken, but they returned back to their home in the Yunping District, which is close to Yunmeng
After a couple of years, Meng Shi began doing some deep research into cultivation sects and learned that the Yunmeng Jiang Sect was known for blurring the usual strict dividing line between cultivators and civilians, and that they often hosted a summer camp that taught child some basics of cultivation, to better defend themselves against low level demons
Of course, Meng Shi enrolled Meng Yao in the program, hoping that if he impressed his teachers enough, they would take him into the sect
It took a couple of summers of repeatedly enrolling Meng Yao (and the summer camp did not come cheap) but Meng Shi was determined and Meng Yao worked harder than he ever had in his entire short life, and eventually Jiang Fengmian did recognize Meng Yao’s potential, and offered Meng Yao the opportunity to become a disciple
As per the nondisclosure agreement, Meng Shi kept mum about his parentage, and advised Meng Yao to do the same, tho she still intends on him earning his father’s recognition some day
However, one day Madam Jin pays her best friend a visit, and recognizes Meng Yao, try as he might to stay out of her range of vision
What follows is a lot of drama, as Madam Yu is torn between her loyalty to Madam Jin and the fact that she has genuinely begun to care for Meng Yao, since he is the only person who seems to be able to predict Wei Wuxian’s behavior with any sort of consistency, sparing the family many moments of embarrassment. At last, Madam Yu decides that Meng Yao can stay, as long as he vows to Madam Jin that he will keep his parentage secret
Meng Yao isn’t happy about the idea, but at last he concedes, if only because he has no other choice, and he has made some actual friends within the Yunmeng Jiang Sect
Jiang Yanli has basically already adopted Meng Yao as her newest baby brother, anyway
Thanks for the question! I hope this answer is sufficient!

I want to know more about Jiang Cheng in that au. What does he do besides being there?
Ahaha, good question! Well, Jiang Cheng is still the future leader of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect. And he still spends a lot of time getting Wei Wuxian out of trouble, tho thankfully that’s a bit easier with Meng Yao around
Jiang Cheng takes the lead on most cultivation cases that take place in the Yunmeng district, but he also often tags along with his two shixiong on their out-of-district missions. He doesn’t have anything to do with demonic cultivation, theoretical or otherwise, but he does enjoy taking demonic cultivators down
In this au, Madam Yu gives Jiang Cheng Zidian once he turns twenty, so he uses it to help free people who are being possessed
He also crushes on Wen Qing, who is a still a doctor who studies golden cores for a living. The Qishan Wen Sect have largely fallen out of favor with the general public, mostly for trying to assert dominance over the other sects, tho it has not resulted in any war or loss of power. So while asking Wen Qing out on a date is not quite so taboo, it would raise quite a few eyebrows
Of course, that assumes he will work up the courage to ask her out on a date. The jury is still out on that one
Madam Yu is surprisingly supportive of the idea of Jiang Cheng dating Wen Qing, because as much as she dislikes the Qishan Wen Sect, she also likes strong-minded women who aren’t afraid to speak their minds
Jiang Cheng also has a spiritual dog companion named Jasmine, who he has taught to hide whenever she sees or hears Wei Wuxian. Jasmine is a very good girl, but she is also a very big girl. Sometimes her attempts at hiding are not so effective (such as, for instance, when she crawls under a coffee table but ends up lifting it up because even laying down she is too tall to fit underneath it). But she tries, and Jiang Cheng adores her
I hope this satisfies your curiosity!

I have some tentative ideas about a modern cultivator au where Meng Yao becomes a Yunmeng Jiang disciple
It would basically be an excuse to write reluctant bffs Meng Yao and Wei Wuxian
Also Jiang Cheng is there
And Wei Wuxian and Meng Yao are both (theoretical) expects of demonic cultivation, so they’re asked to consult on many different cases for various other sects
Then there is also their relationship to the Lan brothers, which involves funny antics because:
Lan Wangji is in love with Wei Wuxian
Lan Xichen and Meng Yao are both painfully aware of Lan Wangji’s crush as well as Wei Wuxian’s complete obliviousness
Meng Yao is in love with Lan Xichen
A fact both Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian know, but Lan Xichen does not
Meng Yao has to suffer while Lan Xichen complains about “how more obvious could Wangji be? How is Wei Wuxian so thick-headed?”
Meanwhile Lan Wangji has to suffer while Wei Wuxian is always making jokes like “how has your brother not caught on yet? Meng Yao isn’t exactly being subtle”
Anyway, ask me some questions about this au, if you would be so kind
