A friend once told me they disliked a Pride event they got to go to (I was in the closet at the time, but out to them) because it was 'innapropriate for children' and 'made queer people look bad' cause of the BDSM, leather, kinkster crowd and--ok we all know young queers deserve spaces that aren't inherently sexual or whatever, seperate conversation from what OP is saying.

The fact of the matter is trying to gain approval from cis-het folks is ridiculous and 'respectability politics' has always been a plot by oppressors to dismantle and cause in-fighting in minority groups. For all my black followers, it's similar to thinking that being a "Good Black person" will somehow get brownie points from white folk and you'll be less likely to get your rights stripped.

We all know that's a big ass lie. The people in minority groups deemed 'degenerates' have usually been the folks to do the fighting and protecting, and it's no different in the queer community.

My own mother once yelled at me because I SMILED at two women kissing on t.v. she was in such a fit of rage as if we just watched the most gruesome, inappropriate sex scene known to man. No matter how 'wholesome' or 'respectable' you are, homophobes see queerness as a threat.

It's the damn 'give an inch, take a mile' mentality. Coddling and comforting homophobes and acting superior towards the kinky, leather wearing, out and proud dykes and queens and hoochie daddies isn't gonna get em to be more accepting. It's gonna make them think they can get away with stripping more rights.
