'Stuart held out and went to the Liverpool College of Art where he later met and got friendly with John Lennon.
They were diametric opposites: Lennon was a bulldozer stampeding through college like King Kong. Meantime, Sutcliffe quietly established himself as one of the best art students of his time.
Rod Murray was their contemporary at college and shared flats with both of them. "Lennon was powerful," he says. "Everyone else was going through a belated beatnik phase but John was an epic Ted, winkle-pickers and greasy hair, drainies and all. He worked so hard at keeping people amused that he had no time left over for painting."
"He was exhausting, he could be very cruel at times but he was hilarious and everyone was dominated by him. One day I saw him running down the road, holding a steering wheel. No car, just the wheel. He said he was driving down to town."
"Stuart wasn't like that at all. He worked hard and he was quiet but, he was a most determined character. He had great belief in himself and he'd defend himself fiercely if any of the teachers put his work down."
George Melly writing in the Observer Magazine, September 1968.
