A/N: There is a five year time jump from the last chapter of The Reid Method: A New Chapter to this chapter.
The Reid Method: Revelations
Chapter One- They Did The Monster Mash
J.J. was sitting at her desk in the Bullpen room when she filled Rossi and Penelope in on her latest challenge as a mother— convincing Jesse to go treat or tricking this year.
The twins were now eight years old and Spencer and J.J. had been told that one of their friends at school said that Halloween was the one night a year that monsters came out because they could blend in. It certainly didn't help when Jesse caught Spencer and J.J. up late one night talking about cases and how many "monsters" they had to catch.
Jesse was now convinced that he did not want to go trick or treating on Halloween because he was too scared.
Spencer and J.J. tried to convince Jesse to go trick or treating but Jesse insisted he did not want to go. They were both upset that they had played a part in their youngest son not wanting to participate in Halloween. It was Spencer's favourite and he loved to take them trick or treating.
Lily told her parents that she would try to convince her brother to go trick or treating since they always went together and Lily did not want to go without him.
"If Lily can't convince him to go, maybe Henry can" Spencer had suggested.
Rossi, Penelope, and J.J. made their way into the Round Table room where they discussed a case of four men that were missing from Oregon.
Henry was now 19 years old. He had graduated from high school the year before and was accepted into the European Languages and Transcultural Studies program at UCLA. He relocated to Los Angeles to attend the program and graduated in June— he fast tracked the program and was able to graduate in just one year.
Shortly after his graduation, Henry returned home and announced that he had applied to the FBI Academy and would be starting there in the fall.
Henry read the titles of the books on the shelves in front of him quickly. He inherited his father's reading speed and  intelligence. He was searching for a book relating to his courses at the  FBI Academy. He spotted the book he was looking for and pulled it out, standing up as he read the back  cover quickly.
When he turned to walk to the cashier to pay for it, he caught a familiar face five feet away from him.
She was looking at the  back cover of the book she was holding. Her long brown hair was cut to just below her shoulders, she looked exactly the same as the last time Henry had seen her—their high school graduation. Henry picked up the courage he needed and started to walk towards her,  eventually finding himself right in front of her.
"Lucy?" Henry said quietly. She was looking down, reading the back of her book.
Lucille Grant grew up across the street from the Reid's. They moved to Quantico from Baltimore when Lucy was ten. She lived there with her  parents and her sister, Holly, until her mother passed away when Lucy was twelve.
Lucy looked up from her book and recognized him immediately. "Henry"  she smiled and put the book down on the shelf to hug him. He hugged  her  back.
Henry had missed her smile. The last time he had seen it was at their high school graduation.
"How's Yale?" Henry asked.
"Going well" she responded. "Hopefully in four years, I'll be a lawyer."
Henry smiled back at her and glanced at the book on the shelf. "You know what goes well with a book?"
She looked at him waiting for the answer.
"Coffee" Henry answered. "I was going to get some at the café down the street. Would you like to join me?"
"Sure" Lucy agreed, picking up her book off the shelf.
They paid for their books and went to the coffee shop down the street.
Spencer and J.J. were looking through the cabin of one of the missing men from the case when Spencer remembered dealing with this situation about monsters with one of their other children.
"You know we've dealt with this monster thing before" Spencer said as he looked through the bookshelf.
"We did?" J.J. questioned as she looked through the books on the floor.
"Yeah, remember when Henry caught us talking about "monsters" and we told him he should go out and try to figure out which ones are real and which ones are not."
J.J. gasped as she remembered what Spencer was referring to. "That was the year he dressed up as you. His favourite profiler."
Spencer smiled. "Let's let Jo have a try to convince him first."
Seventeen year old Jonah packed his football gear back into his gym bag. They had just finished  football practice where Jonah played as a  linebacker. He closed his locker in the locker room as he heard footsteps coming towards him.
"Hey, Jo" Holly greeted him, leaning against a locker in her cheer leading outfit. She pulled her long blonde hair out of the ponytail and let it fall past her shoulders. She smiled at him, her blue eyes teasing him.
Holly and Jonah had officially started dating over the summer after being "friends with benefits" starting the day before Jonah's 17th birthday.
After everyone had left and everything was cleaned up, J.J. and Spencer decided to go to bed.
When Jonah was sure that J.J. and Spencer were asleep, Jonah went downstairs to the front door to let Holly in.
Jonah opened the door and Holly stepped inside quietly and closed the door behind her.
"Hi" Jonah whispered.
"Hi" she whispered back, pressing her lips to Jonah's.
Jonah took her hand and lead her up the stairs to his room.
They sat down on his bed and Holly took off his shirt carefully. She pressed her lips to Jonah's and he laid back on the bed, running his hands through her hair.
Tomorrow was going to be a really great birthday.
Jonah smiled back at his girlfriend and he continued to pack his  bag. When he was  finished, he asked "you ready to go?"
"With you? Always" Holly responded. Jonah took her hand in his.
Spencer's youngest niece, Natalie Hayes, had always had an interest in the medical field. When she graduated high school, she decided to attend Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. She studied surgery there and is now, at the age of twenty two, in her fifth year of her surgical residency program at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Natalie stepped out of the O.R. scrub room when she was approached by Dr. Martin—the attending cardiothoracic surgeon. She pulled her scrub cap off, letting her long brown hair fall past her shoulders.
"Dr. Hayes" Dr. Martin spoke. Natalie glanced at Dr. Martin and then looked at the surgeon standing beside him. Chocolate brown eyes looked back at her with a bright smile and dimples to match. Natalie could see brown hair from under his scrub cap. "Have you met Dr. Daniel Bacarri? He's the new attending who'll be taking over for me."
Natalie glanced back to Dr. Martin quickly. "No, I haven't."
"Dr. Bacarri, this is Dr. Natalia Hayes, she's a fifth year resident" Dr. Martin introduced them as they shook hands.
"Nice to meet you, Natalie" Dr. Bacarri said. "Have you chosen a specialty yet?"
"Cardiothoracic surgery" Natalie responded.
"That's my favorite one" Dr. Bacarri joked. "Why?"
"My brother" Natalie answered honestly.
Cameron laid back on the bed in the examination room at New York Presbyterian Hospital as Dr. Evans performed the echocardiogram.
Dr. Evans finished with his examination and pulled the ultrasound away from the bed, sitting down on the stool next to the bed. He washed his hands and dried them, picking up Cameron's file off the counter.
"Diagnosed six years ago at age 18" Dr. Evans read aloud. "You haven't had any significant problems since then." He set the file down and pulled his stethoscope from around his neck, putting them into his ears to listen to Cameron's heart.
Dr. Evans listened for twenty seconds before he nodded his head silently and took his stethoscope out. "Everything looks good." He placed it around his neck.
Dr. Evans stood up and went back to Cameron's chart to write some notes in them. "I saw your sister upstairs. She's been doing well with her residency from what I've heard."
Cameron nodded. "She's got her boards coming up later this year, then she'll be an Attending."
He closed Cameron's file and put down his pen on the counter. "You're good to go. I'll see you again in six months for another exam, okay?"
"Thanks, Dr. Evans," Cameron stood up from the bed and shook hands with the doctor.
"No problem, Cam. Take it easy, okay?" Dr. Evans said.
"I will" Cameron said as he walked out of the office.
Twenty three year old Victoria Hayes picked her brother Owen up from his school after he finished football practice. They were going to meet Natalie and Cameron at the hall where their Aunt Courtney and her fiancé Julian were going to be getting married in just 2 days.
"Anyone else think it's a little ominous that we're decorating a wedding hall on Halloween?" Owen asked.
"Anyone think it's ominous our aunt is getting married two days after Halloween?" Victoria added.
"Just the finishing touches" Natalie clarified.
"They've been engaged for almost two years and this is the date they set. They didn't want to wait anymore" Cameron said as he adjusted one of the lights.
Owen sat down on the bench at the edge of the parking lot waiting for his Aunt Courtney and Julian to pick him up from football practice. He knew they were going to be later than usual because Julian was going to propose to his Aunt today. Julian had asked both him and his brother as well as their Uncle Spencer for permission to marry her. They've been living together for three years and have been dating for almost seven.
Now, Julian was ready to take the next step. He asked Spencer for his  permission to marry Courtney two weeks ago and even gave Spencer a  preview of the ring. Spencer was happy to give Julian his blessing—  Spencer thought he was a great guy and he made his sister happy.
Julian and Courtney were on their way to pick up Owen from football  practice. Julian had to stop by the field office first to pick up some files—at least that's what he told Courtney. He was actually going to  retrieve the ring he had picked up for her.
Julian parked the car in the parking lot and made his way inside. He made his way through security and took the elevator upstairs to his office.
He found the box in the bottom of his desk drawer where he had hidden it a few weeks ago. He didn't want to risk Courtney finding it before he could ask.
"Did you find the case file?" Courtney asked when he returned to the car.
Julian nodded and placed the box in the backseat. He pulled out of the parking lot and they continued to pick Owen up from football practice.
Once outside the house, Julian parked the car in the driveway and Owen got out with a smile on his face.
When Courtney went to open her car door Julian stopped her. "Wait."
Courtney looked back at him with a smile. "What?"
"You know this is where we met, right here in this driveway?" Julian said.
"My brother picked you up during a case you guys were working on and I happened to be with him at the time? Yes, I remember."
"You asked him for my number after the case was over didn't you?" Julian teased.
"I did. Spencer and I got talking and I asked about you and I asked him for your number. It was nice to have someone in my life after Ian. After he was gone it was just me and the kids it was lonely for a little while but then I found you."
They held hands across the console.
"I have something for you" Julian said as he reached in the back seat and pulled the ring box out of the box from the office. He opened the box to show the ring to Courtney.
"That's a nice case file" Courtney said, surprised.
Julian smiled, chuckling. "Courtney Reid, I love you and I can't imagine my life without you in it."
Courtney smiled as tears of happiness welled up in her eyes.
"Will you marry me?" Julian asked.
"Yes" Courtney said tearfully. "Yes, I'll marry you." She placed both hands on either side of his face. "I love you, Julian Baker."
"I love you, too" Julian replied. He placed a tender kiss on her lips which she returned.
"Did you ask my brother for permission?" Courtney asked, teasing him.
"Yes, and Cam and Owen too" Julian smiled.
"You're amazing" Courtney beamed as the two shared another kiss.
Spencer, J.J. and the rest of the team arrived back at the BAU after they had finished their case.
To their surprise all four of the Reid children were there, all of them dressed in their Halloween costumes including Jesse.
"Does this mean you're going trick or treating?" J.J. asked as she wrapped Jesse in a hug.
Spencer placed his to go bag on his desk.
"This means we're all going trick to treating" Jonah clarified.
"Including Owen, Cam, Victoria, and Aunt Courtney and Julian" Henry added as he held up his phone. He was on FaceTime with them and they were all dressed in their costumes.
"Natalie got called in for a surgery but she said that technically that still counts as being dressed up for Halloween" Courtney said through the phone.
"We got Halloween costumes for you too" Lily said as she held up the costumes.
"Let's go get some candy" Spencer agreed.
"And find out which monsters are real and which are not" Jesse added.
"Exactly, buddy" J.J. said as she and Spencer looked at each other.
Henry remembered how his parents had convinced him to go trick or treating after he heard their parents talking about monsters. He decided that he, Jonah and Lily would talk to Jesse together and convince him that way. They invited their cousins and Aunt to join in with them on FaceTime and got their parents costumes so they could come along too.
Henry passed his phone over to Jonah as the group talked to Courtney. He got Spencer's costume from Lily and handed it to him.
"Good plan, son" Spencer whispered as they were leaving the bullpen room.
"Thanks, Dad" Henry smiled.
"Now please tell me you're going to change before we go out there" Spencer sighed as he looked at his son's costume. He was dressed as a surfer wearing only red Hawaiian shorts, a seashell necklace and flip flops. He carried a yellow surfboard with him.
"Yes, Dad. I intend to."
"Good. We don't want you showing up as the 'something blue' to your aunt's wedding."
"Noted, Dad."

Chapter Three- Mama, I Know You're Tired Of Being Alone
Two weeks later, Courtney and Spencer were chatting quietly at the back of the reception hall. Courtney had made the decision to bring their mother back to Quantico for Lucy's funeral. She wanted her mother to be able to be there for her grandson--while she still could.
"We're only going to be here for a few days" Courtney spoke in a hushed tone.
Lucy's family and friends were gathered to celebrate her life and Courtney didn't want anyone else to know what was going on with their mother, at least not yet.
"I wanted her to be able to be here for him" Courtney spoke as she watched her mother give Henry a hug in the corner of the room.
The funeral guests had gathered in the dining room for potluck. Jonah and Holly were sitting at the table with Henry and their grandmother, along with J.J. and Richard, Lucy and Holly's father. The twins were sitting on the floor next to their table playing with Suzi, an Akita Inu that belonged to Holly, and Mia--a Black Lab, that belonged to Richard. They were both adopted by Richard's wife, Christina, before she died.
Owen, Natalia, Victoria and Zane were sitting at another table along with Henry's friend, Alex from the New York field where Henry worked. Alongside their table was the team, Hotch, Morgan, Tara, Rossi, and Garcia all gathered around chatting quietly along with Rossi's girlfriend, Hayden, and Anderson and Gina from the BAU.
"After everything that has happened in the last few weeks, I wanted the both of them to be able to give each other some peace" Courtney said quietly.
"I'm glad you're here too, Court" Spencer said as he took his sister's hand in his. "You know better than anyone what he's going through."
Courtney was engaged to Julian Baker three years ago, on the night of their wedding, Julian was shot and killed by Amelia Vetch right in front of Courtney.
"That's why I wanted to be here for him" Courtney looked back over at Spencer.
"Hey, babe, I got you a plate" an olive toned hand placed the plate on the table in front of Courtney. The hand belonged to Elijah Olsen, Courtney's boyfriend. Three years after Julian's death, Courtney had finally allowed herself to move on. She and Elijah had began dating a few months ago.
"Thanks, babe" Courtney gave Elijah a quick peck on the lips.
"I'll take your mom back to the hotel in a few minutes, okay?" Elijah questioned.
"Sounds good" Courtney nodded as Elijah went to get their coats.
"You know you didn't have to get a hotel, right? You could have stayed at the house with us" Spencer stated.
"With four of your kids, plus you and J.J. and Owen? The house isn't full enough for you?" Courtney teased.
"It's a big house" Spencer joked.
Courtney chuckled and turned back to where their mother and Henry were sitting as her smile disappeared. "When you come back to Vegas with us, we need to get Mom tested."
"For what?" Spencer asked.
"Alzheimers" Courtney said rising from her chair and crossing the room to where her mother and Henry were sitting.
Spencer was shocked by Courtney's announcement. Their mother was fine, she was just irritated and agitated because the doctors needed to change her medication again. That's all that was going on, Spencer convinced himself. He wasn't ready to lose his mother yet and he wasn't going to.
Later that night, Spencer and J.J. sat awake in their bed and discussed their plan for trying to help Henry get through his grief.
"Henry wants to stay here for another couple of days" J.J. spoke as turned to Spencer. "He's not ready to go back to New York yet. He wants to give Richard and Holly a chance to be with the rest of their family before they head back to New York and go through Lucy's things."
"Understandable" Spencer nodded. "Jo is heading back to Boston tomorrow for work. He feels bad for leaving Henry so soon but he doesn't have a lot of vacation time."
"Did he tell you about what happened in New York with Holly?" J.J. asked.
"Henry did" Spencer admitted. "He didn't go into detail but said that Jonah caught Holly cheating on him."
"They seemed okay at the funeral" J.J. pointed out.
"I think they were just being nice for their families" Spencer agreed. "Holly did just lose her sister and Henry lost his girlfriend. They wouldn't want to make the day any harder for either of them."
"When Henry goes back to New York, I'm going to go back with him" J.J. spoke changing the subject.
"I think that's a good idea" Spencer agreed.
"Owen is going to fly back with us and I'm going to take the twins with us for a little trip. It'll be good for Henry to have them around while he's going through this."
"Courtney and Elijah are flying home with Mom in a few days, I was thinking I was going to go with them" Spencer thought out loud. "It's a terrible time to leave Henry while he's going through this."
J.J. took Spencer's hand in hers. "I think he'll be happy to have one less person hovering over him in New York."
"You might be right about that" Spencer chuckled lightly.
Three days later, Spencer, Courtney, Elijah and Diana boarded the plane for Las Vegas. Spencer and Courtney sat down together in a row of seats while Elijah and Diana sat in the row behind them.
Spencer spent the next four days in Las Vegas with his sister, Elijah and his mother. He visited his mother every day he was there in Las Vegas. He talked to her about her granddaughters— her oldest granddaughter Victoria, now twenty six years old, had gotten back from a trip to Italy with her boyfriend, Zane. Natalia, or Natalie as everyone called her, is an attending cardio thoracic surgeon at the young age of twenty five. Spencer explained that Lily, Spencer's daughter, and Diana's youngest granddaughter, was now taking AP biology classes at the age of twelve.
Diana seemed for the most part to be in good spirits and happy, it was only little moments here and there that Spencer noticed her irritability and agitation. He shook off his hesitation knowing full well that it was normal for his mother to have ups and downs with her schizophrenia and mood swings.
It was Spencer's last day in Las Vegas when he observed for himself what Courtney had been trying to tell him. He was sitting down with his mother in the living room area of the sanitarium when they were discussing her grandsons—Henry, Jonah, Jesse, and Owen. There were only four of them now as Cameron her eldest grandson had died three years earlier.
Spencer talked about how Henry was living and working in New York and Jonah was working in Boston and they discussed how sad it had been at Lucy's funeral.
"How is Owen's heart?" Diana asked. "Did he have a check up lately?" Owen was diagnosed with HCM— Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy three years ago at the age of sixteen. His brother Cameron also had it as they both inherited the condition from their father, Connor Hayes.
"He's doing well" Spencer recalled from Natalie's description of his last appointment. She always made sure to accompany her brother to his HCM appointments to make sure he was doing well and also to make sure he wasn't lying about any changes with his heart condition.
Diana smiled happy to hear that her grandson was doing well. They had lost both Cameron and Connor as a result of their heart conditions.
"Cameron will make sure he looks after himself" Diana nodded. "He'll look after his brother, don't worry."
Spencer smiled uneasily and looked down wearily. He was sure that she meant it spiritually, that Cameron would look after his brother from the afterlife, but it was the way she said it that made Spencer think she meant it literally.
She couldn't have meant it literally, Spencer thought. Cameron has been dead for three years. Spencer shook it off and smiled at his mother genuinely and changed the subject.
Spencer returned to Quantico still contemplating what they could do to help her. He thought that by working some cases he could help other people while still trying to figure out what to do for his mother. He knew that he should tell J.J. what was going on but he didn't want to upset or take her away from Henry right now, he needed her more right now and Spencer didn't want to bother J.J. while he was with him in New York.
J.J. and the twins returned to Quantico two weeks later at the beginning of August and Spencer decided that he was going to tell her the truth about what was going on with his mother when they had a chance to be alone.
Hotch and Morgan were debriefing in Hotch's office when J.J. arrived back at the B.A.U. Montolo Guissepi had collapsed when Morgan was interviewing him at the prison.
"Welcome back!" Spencer said as he picked his wife up off the ground and hugged her. He placed a soft kiss on her lips.
"We missed you" Penelope exclaimed as Spencer set his wife back down on the floor.
Rossi gave J.J. a traditional Italian kiss, placing a kiss on each cheek.
J.J. had sent pictures of the trip while they were in New York and Garcia had taken the liberty of printing them off and having them on her desk for when she returned.
After Morgan and Hotch finished debriefing in his office, Rossi called everyone into the round table room to discuss a case that was brought forward by his daughter, Joy. The case was a 19 year old college student named Bahni who was believed to be abducted.
After reviewing the surveillance footage from where Bahni was last seen, Hotch instructed J.J. and Spencer to go to the alley and do a walk through to find out where the Unsub could have taken her.
Spencer received a text from his sister, Courtney, as they walked down the alley between the two buildings. He quickly glanced at his phone and shut the screen off, putting the phone away.
"Is everything okay?" J.J. asked as he put the phone away. She noticed that he was being abnormally quiet, something she knew he only did when something was bothering him.
"It's my mom" Spencer sighed as the two of them stopped walking and stood in the alley. "Courtney called me while we were in New York and said she wasn't doing well. That's why I went to Vegas with her and Elijah."
"Spence, why didn't you tell me?" J.J. asked, concern  in her voice.
Spencer sighed again. "We were in New York with Henry when he got into the car accident and then Lucy died and then it was her funeral. I didn't want to bother you when you were with him and the twins in New York."
"Spence, I love you. If something is hurting you or worrying you, I want to be there for you. In any way I can, okay?" J.J. took his hand in hers.
"I love you" Spencer said softly.
"After the case, after we find Bahni, I think you should go back to Vegas and see your mom again.”
Spencer nodded. " I will. Right now, Bahni needs us but after the case, I'm going back to Vegas to visit Mom. She needs me."

The Reid Method: The Next Generation
Chapter Two- I Had To Find You Tell You I Need You
"Okay, you're going to have to tell me the story again" Lucy insisted. She and Henry were laying in bed facing each other at their apartment in New York. They had both returned the day before after visiting in Virginia.
A week after Henry and Jonah had walked in on Holly and another man in Henry's apartment, Henry returned to Virginia to be with Lucy.
Jonah insisted on going back to work as soon as possible. He didn't want to miss out on any training and was looking for anything to distract from the humiliation of Holly cheating on him—and Henry catching her in the act.
Henry insisted that he couldn't get back on a plane without him so he decided to take some time off of work to go home and visit his girlfriend and his parents.
Lucy was in her second year of Law at New York University and had taken two weeks off to visit her father in Virginia. Her father, Richard Grant, is a paediatric surgeon.
"Apparently, Holly thought that I was in Virginia with you and she had a key to the apartment so she thought it was a good idea to bring the guy back here."
"That's why we have a new couch and a new mattress, headboard, and sheets" Lucy scoffed looking away. "What about Jo? How was he?"
"Not good. They were together for three years" Henry sighed. "What about Holly?"
"She feels stupid. She's in disbelief that she would ever cheat on him. She thought he was going to cheat on her because he was working all the time."
"Jo would never do that" Henry insisted.
"I know" Lucy looked directly into Henry's eyes. "Do you think they can fix their relationship?"
"I don't know" Henry laced his fingers through Lucy's. "Jo is very stubborn. If you violate his trust, he doesn't come back to you very easily."
Jonah was inside a local bar in Virginia when his cell phone rang. He looked at the Caller ID before answering it; he didn't want to talk to Holly right now. It was Maya.
"Hey" he said putting the phone to his ear.
"Hi. What are you doing right now?" Maya asked.
"Sitting in a bar trying to drink away my relationship" Jonah answered as he put his hand around the glass sitting in front of him.
"I'll join you. Should you be drinking already?"
"It's been three weeks" Jonah stated. "I'm good."
"I mean, in the morning. It's 11 a.m."
"It's 5'o'clock somewhere, right?"
Maya chuckled on the other line. "I'll be there in a bit. Don't start any bar fights, okay?"
"Never. It's too early in the morning for that" Jonah smiled as he hung up the phone.
Henry's phone vibrated on the kitchen table as he set mugs down on the counter. He picked up his phone and opened the screen. His boss had texted him that he needed to be in the office today.
"Hey, Luce" he called out, his eyes still fixated on the screen.
Henry heard footsteps coming down the hall as Lucy made her way to the kitchen.
"Yes?" She said, appearing in the doorway.
Henry looked up from his screen. "I have to head into the office today."
"That's okay. I have a late class so maybe we can have a late lunch?" Lucy said suggestively as she walked over to Henry and placed a kiss on his lips.
"That sounds like a great idea" Henry agreed.
"Alright, I'm on my way out. I'll see you around 3?"
"Sounds good" Henry said as he placed another kiss on her lips.
Lucy went to the door and placed her hand on the knob, turning it. She turned back to Henry before she opened the door. "I love you."
"I love you too" Henry said. He watched as she opened the door and slipped outside closing the door behind her.
Henry put the coffee mugs back up in the cupboard and grabbed his car keys before heading out the door himself and locking it behind him.
Henry was about ten minutes into his twenty minute commute when he was on a secluded road. His parents had helped him pay for the S.U.V. after he had gotten the job in New York. He glanced at the clock as he continued and when he looked back up at the road a dog had run out right in front of him.
Panicked, Henry swerved to avoid the dog and didn't have time to hit the brake before crashing into a utility pole on the side of the road. The dog barking was the only sound that could be heard on the secluded road as Henry's head rested on the airbag against the steering wheel. He was unconscious.
September, 12 years ago, it was lunch time at school.
A couple of Henry's friends told him about the two girls who had just moved here. Apparently, they moved into the house across the street from the Reid Family.
Their names are Lucy and Holly Grant. They started here at school today.
Henry was walking into the cafeteria at school and noticed a bunch of his friends sitting at a table in the back. They were calling him. Waving at him, telling him to come over.
As he was walking over to the table, he bumped into a girl with long brown hair and soft brown eyes. She was carrying a book and had dropped it on the floor.
Oh great! I probably looked like a dork to her, Henry had thought.
They both said sorry to each other at the same time. Henry smiled at her and Lucy smiled back. They both kneeled down to get her book at the same time.
She giggled.
Henry picked up her book and handed it to her.
As they stood Henry realized he had never seen her before. She must be the new girl, he thought. Well, one of them.
One of his friends told him that Lucy was ten and in the same grade as him. The girl looked about his age. She must be Lucy, he thought.
Lucy tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
"You must be Lucy" Henry finally spoke. "I'm Henry Reid."
Jonah was on his second drink when Maya arrived at the bar. She pulled a stool out from the bar and sat down next to Jonah as he took another sip.
"Are you having a drink with me?" Jonah asked.
"I think you're going to have enough to drink for both of us" Maya said.
Jonah chuckled. "You're right."
"So you're just here to drink, you don't want to talk about it?" Maya picked up Jonah's glass and took a sip from it and placed it back on the bar. "Alright, I'll ask the questions then. I know you were together for three years. Was she your first kiss?"
"No,  it was Jillian Rawlings. We were thirteen and it was on the bus ride home from a field trip." He looked over at Maya. "What about you? Do you remember yours?"
Maya chuckled. "Charlie Peterson. We were also thirteen. It was on the football field during lunch."
"Football field meaning soccer field?" Jonah clarified.
"Yes, at home in Essex" Maya explained.
Jonah took another sip of his drink. "You know there's only one person I know that's currently in a relationship with the person they had their first kiss with?"
Maya looked back over at Jonah. "Who would that be?"
"My brother. Henry and Lucy had their first kiss with each other when they were fifteen. They were in our backyard of the house."
"Were they together after that?" Maya asked.
"No. They reconnected in college and they've been together ever since. I've never seen him this happy. I'm glad he found her again." Jonah smiled.
Jonah's cell phone rang in his pocket and he pulled it out. "Unknown number?" He said aloud as he answered the call.
"Hello?" He answered the phone putting it to his ear.
"Hi, is this Jonah Reid?" The voice on the other end was a male.
"Yes, this is he" Jonah said.
"I'm calling from New York Presbyterian hospital. It's about Henry Reid."
"He's my brother" Jonah said quickly.
"He was in a car accident. He's in surgery."
"I'm on my way" Jonah said breathlessly.
"What was that?" Maya asked, concerned.
"Henry was in a car accident. He's in surgery" Jonah said as he leapt to his feet. "I've got to get to New York."
Maya put a hand on his chest. "Let me drive you. You've been drinking all morning."
Jonah's mind was racing. "I've got to call my parents. And Lucy."
"From the car" Maya assured him as she put money on the counter for the drinks and they left the bar.
Nineteen year old Henry read the titles of the books on the shelves in front of him quickly. He inherited his father's reading speed and intelligence. He was searching for a book relating to his courses at the FBI Academy—he was a special agent trainee there.
Lucille Grant grew up across the street from the Reids. They moved to Quantico when Lucy was ten. She lived there with her parents and her sister, Holly, until her mother passed away when Lucy was twelve.
Lucy looked up from her book and recognized him immediately. "Henry" she smiled and put the book down on the shelf to hug him. He hugged her back gently. "How's Quantico going?"
"Great" Henry answered honestly. He was enjoying the course so far but he wasn't sure what to think about the physical training yet. He had played football in his final year of high school as the quarterback but this training was a lot different than football practice. "I think I'm going to be good at this."
She smiled in response. Henry had missed her smile. The last time he had seen it was at their graduation.
"What about you? How's Yale?" Henry asked.
Jonah hung up the phone with his father as Maya put the car in park when they reached the airport. He had already booked his flight before he made the call. "Dad is in Detroit on a case and Mom got a flight to New York to surprise Henry this morning. She should be there by now. The twins are with my Grandma Jareau back in D.C. I've called her and let her know what's going on."
"You're not supposed to be back at work for another two weeks but I'll let our boss know just in case you need more time" Maya said.
"Thanks" Jonah said breathlessly as he put his phone back in his pocket and opened the car door stepping out.
"You'll call and let me know how he is?" Maya asked.
"I will" Jonah promised.
"Okay, be careful."
"I will" Jonah said as he shut the car door and made his way through the airport parking lot.
Spencer was waiting to board his flight when J.J. returned his phone call. He picked up after the first ring. "Hi" was all he said. He knew that J.J. would have questions about the message he left on her voicemail.
"Spence, I got your message. Henry was in a car accident? Did they say what his injuries were or what condition he was in?" J.J. asked urgently.
"No. Jonah got the call. He was taken to New York Pres, they didn't mention anything about his condition or injuries--"
"Flight 141 from Detroit to New York City is now boarding at Gate 7" the announcement came over the P.A. system above Spencer.
"J.J., I've got to go. They're boarding my flight. Call Lucy, Jonah said she was on the way to the hospital" Spencer said quickly as he grabbed his bag.
"I'll call her. Love you."
"I love you, too" Spencer said as he hung up the phone.
J.J. had just landed at JFK International Airport. After she hung up the phone from Spencer, she immediately went to the baggage claim to pick up her luggage. While she waited impatiently, she called Lucy, hoping for answers about Henry but instead she got Lucy's voicemail. J.J. hung up the phone instead of leaving a message as she spotted her luggage on the baggage claim ramp. She scooped up her bag and headed towards the main entrance of the airport.
The ride forty minute cab ride from the airport to the hospital was one of the longest J.J. had ever experienced. Usually when she arrived, Henry would be there to pick her up and the drive would be shorter and they would spend the drive catching up with each other.
Now J.J. sat alone in the back of the cab, worried about Henry. She didn't know anything about his condition and she tried to call Lucy again and couldn't reach her. She knew that Spencer was on a flight on the way from a case in Detroit, Jonah was also on his way to New York on a flight.
She pulled out her phone and called Courtney. She didn't know who else had been notified about Henry's accident. The line rang about four times before it went to Courtney's voicemail. J.J. waited for the beep and then left her a message.
"Hey, Courtney. It's J.J. I'm not sure if you got a call from Spencer but Henry was in a car accident. They took him to New York Presbyterian and I'm on my way there now. Meet me when you get this message. Bye." J.J. hung up the phone and stayed silent for the rest of the ride, looking out the window as the city passed by.
Late May, 7 years ago, Henry had invited Lucy over to their house to help him study for their exams that were coming up. Henry had inherited his father's intelligence and didn't actually need her help as he already knew the material. Lucy knew this as well but agreed to come over anyway.
Lucy, now 15 years old, like Henry, wanted nothing more than to have her first kiss with Henry. They had grown up next door to each other for five years now, spending almost every day after school together and they were best friends. Lucy wanted them to be more and she wanted her first kiss to be with someone meaningful. Henry meant a lot to her. Henry felt the same way as Lucy did but they hadn't ever told each other.
When Lucy came over, she and Henry had gathered their books and sat down at the table outside next to their swimming pool.
He's so handsome, Lucy had thought as Henry sat down at the table beside her. Henry smiled at her nervously as he turned to his book and opened it.
Lucy sighed and turned to her book and opened it. "I thought we could start with--"
Lucy was cut off as Henry took her face in his hands and brought her face to his as he kissed her softly. Her lips met his and parted as she put her hands on his face and pulled back.
"--that" Lucy finished her sentence as Henry looked at her with worry.
"Sorry, I should have asked" Henry apoligized as his gaze dropped to the ground.
Lucy shushed him and shook her head. "I thought you'd never ask." She pulled his face to hers as she returned the kiss.
Inside the living room, Jonah was looking outside the window at them. He smirked and gave Henry a high five in his head. His brother had finally got to kiss the girl that he was in love with for the first time.
J.J. arrived at New York Presbysterian and walked through the front door anxiously. She made her way to the front desk when a familiar voice called her name.
"J.J." the voice belonged to Owen Hayes, Spencer and J.J.'s youngest nephew.
"Owen" J.J. breathed a sigh of relief as she wrapped Owen into a hug. She was relieved to see a familiar face.
"Uncle Spence called me before he got on the plane" Owen explained as he released J.J. from the hug. "I came down as quick as I could. I didn't have any classes this afternoon."
Owen, who was now 19 years old, graduated from high school the year before. He was now teaching self defence classes at the local recreation centre in New York until he figured out what he wanted to do with the rest of his life.
"Have you heard anything?" J.J. asked anxiously.
"He's in Recovery now" Owen nodded. "Surgery went well and he's expected to be out and into a room within an hour or so. They had to repair his ankle and he has a concussion but other than that they said he was fine."
"Okay" J.J. nodded as they walked to the waiting room.
Owen explained that it was just the three of them there so far. Victoria and her boyfriend Zane were on vacation in Italy. Natalie was working in one of the operating rooms and Aunt Courtney was in Las Vegas visiting their grandmother. Lucy was already in the waiting room when they arrived.
"The nurse will let us know when he's in his room. She said we can stay here while we wait" Lucy spoke as they walked into the room.
Two weeks ago, Henry and Jonah boarded the plane to Washington, D.C. Henry had decided that he was ready to take the next step in his relationship with Lucy. He wanted to ask her to be his wife. Henry believed in tradition and wanted to ask her father's permission to marry her first, that was part of the reason why he was flying back to D.C. with Jonah. He also wanted to make sure that Jonah was safe and healthy after his surgery.
Henry took a deep breath. "Okay, so I've been doing a lot of thinking especially with everything that's been going on with you lately" He looked at his brother sitting beside him.
"Okay, so now you've made it about me" Jonah sighed as he looked back at his brother. Jonah grunted lightly and shifted in his seat.
"You okay?" Henry questioned, looking at him with concern.
"Yeah, I'm fine" Jonah brushed it off.
"Do you want a new pillow or something? Do you need anything?" Henry asked, still concerned.
"I'm fine" Jonah repeated. "Just tell me what you were telling me."
"Right" Henry said, getting back on track. "I want to ask Lucy to marry me. I'm going to ask her father for permission."
"You're going to ask Surgeon Dr. Richard Grant for permission to marry his daughter? Good luck with that" Jonah said with a hint of sarcasm. Dr. Richard Grant was not only a pediatric surgeon he was also a father to Lucy and Holly Grant. His wife, Christina, had died two years after Grants had moved next door to the Reids. Dr. Grant had always believed that the Reid's (in particular Spencer and the four of his children) were strange and abnormal because of their particularly high IQs.
"Yeah, I know. I'm kind of nervous" Henry said timidly.
"He's not exactly the approachable type, is he?" Jonah said as a flight attendant passed him in the aisle.
"No, he is not. We were screwed when we started dating his daughters, weren't we?" Henry agreed.
Jonah chuckled lightly. "Yeah, we were. As much as it sucked that Mom lost Grandpa so early, at least Dad didn't have to deal with him for that long."
"True" Henry pointed out.
A flight attendant came over the P.A. to announce to the passengers to fasten their seatbelts and prepare for take off.
Henry looked over at his brother again and smiled. "You'll be my best man, right?"
"You're not even engaged yet and you've already picked the best man?" Jonah questioned.
"You were always going to be my best man no matter what. You're always the first one there when I need you. Always."
"I'm always the first person there because I'm always the first person that you call" Jonah clarified. "So yes, I'm your best man."
He could feel a warm hand inside his when he woke up in his room after the surgery. He looked up into the eyes of his girlfriend, Lucy. A smile spread across her face as he looked up into her eyes. Her brown eyes glistened and her long hair draped over his face as she kissed him on the forehead.
Henry looked over as another hand wrapped around his arm and gave him a little squeeze. It was Jonah. "Hey, Big Brother."
"How are you feeling, honey?" J.J. asked as she placed her hand in his.
"I'm okay" Henry said. He felt a slight throbbing in his head but other than that he didn't feel any pain. His leg was in a cast from below his knee right down to his toes, it was propped up on a pillow at the end of the bed. He remembered how he had swerved to avoid hitting the dog before the crash. "Do they know what happened to the dog?"
Henry looked around the room as he took in the familiar faces of his family. His dad, his mom, Owen, Jo, Natalie, and finally Lucy.
The family explained to Henry that he had gotten out of the crash with a broken ankle but other than that, he had been fine. No one else had been injured when Henry swerved and he crashed into a utility pole. The dog was fine too, Henry had turned the wheel just in time to miss him.
"I'm going to call Victoria and Zane and let them know you're awake" Owen announced as he rose from his chair and walked over to Henry's side. "I'm glad you're okay."
"Me too" Henry agreed and the two of them fist bumped before Owen left the room.
Natalie's pager went off from the corner of the room where she was sitting. "I've got to go" she said as rose from her chair and read the page. She made her way over to the side of the bed and gave Henry a kiss on the forehead. "I'll be back to check on you, okay?"
"Okay" Henry nodded. "I'll be here."
She gave him a quick smile before she turned and made her way outside the door.
"We should probably call the twins and your mom and let them know what's going on" Spencer said to J.J.
"It's fine, Dad. We'll call them in a few minutes" Jonah insisted, placing a comforting hand on their mother's back.
"Well, I am going to go grab you some of your favourite coffee" Lucy said as she squeezed Henry's hand. "I'll stop by the apartment and grab you some of your favourite books too."
"Thank you" Henry whispered softly, kissing her hand.
"I'll be back" she promised, leaning over Henry again and gently kissing him on the lips. "I love you."
"I love you, too" Henry spoke and he watched as she made her way over to the door and left the room.
J.J. made her way over to the side of the bed and sat down on the edge. "I'm sorry I know you're 22 but--" J.J. wrapped her arms around her oldest son and held him gently.
"I'm okay, Mom" he tried to reassure her.
"I want one of those too" Spencer said as he moved to the other side of the bed and sat down.
Henry chuckled and let his mother go and gave his father a hug.
"We love you, honey" J.J. whispered.
"I love you, too" Henry said as he hugged them both.
"Now would be a good time to call Grandma Jareau and the twins" Jonah pointed out.
"Good idea" Spencer agreed.
After they called the twins and Grandma Jareau, Jonah stepped outside of the room to call Maya and let her know how Henry was doing.
Spencer sat beside J.J. next to Henry's bed as she held his hand. "I feel stupid, Mom" Henry admitted.
"Why?" J.J. asked with concern.
"I caused an accident" Henry said remorsefully.
"No one else got hurt, son. Not even the dog" Spencer reassured him.
Henry grimaced. "And the car." Henry thought about how much it would cost to repair the car or possibly replace it. His parents had helped him purchase it.
"Don't worry about the car, honey" J.J. said.
"Just rest and get better" Spencer reassured him again.
Henry laid his head back on the pillow and closed his eyes. Within a minute, he was asleep.
J.J. sighed and leaned back against Spencer, her head on his shoulder. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her forehead gently.
Spencer's phone vibrated in his pocket and he pulled it out, looking at the Caller I.D. "It's Courtney. I'm going to step out and call her back okay?"
"Sure" J.J. said as Spencer kissed her forehead and left the room.
"Hey, Court" Spencer said as he put the phone up to his ear and walked to the waiting room down the hall.
"Hi. How is Henry?" she asked.
"He's going to be okay" Spencer nodded. "His ankle needed to be repaired and he has a concussion but other than that he's okay."
"That's good" Courtney sighed. "I was hoping I could be there."
Spencer cleared his throat and lowered his voice. "How is mom doing?"
Courtney sighed. "Spencer, I think you should really come down here. She's not doing well. She's been getting irritated and agitated more often and they had to change her medication."
Spencer was worried about his mother. He hadn't told anyone else about what had been going on with her, other than Courtney. Spencer had asked Courtney to go down to visit her in Vegas after he had gotten a phone call from the sanitarium. He was worried that something was wrong with their mother and now he knew he might be right.
"I'll make sure everything is okay with Henry and then come down and check on Mom" Spencer decided.
"Okay, I'll call you later" Courtney agreed.
"Sounds good. Love you" Spencer said.
"I love you too."
Jonah was sitting on the stool next to Henry's bed when he woke up. "Hey" he whispered, clearing his throat.
"Hey" Jonah repeated with a smile.
Henry sat up and looked around wondering how long he had been asleep. "Where's Lucy?"
"I don't know" Jonah said. "You've been asleep for about an hour and she called and said she was going to run an errand before she came back to the hospital."
"Oh, okay" Henry sighed. "She should be here soon."
There was a knock on the door of Henry's room and a few seconds later a nurse slid inside. "I'm sorry to interrupt. Mr. Reid, there are some officers here that need to talk to you."
"About the accident?" Henry questioned as two police officers entered the room behind the nurse.
"Henry Reid?" one of the officers questioned.
"Yes?" Henry answered.
The nurse excused herself and left the room closing the door behind her.
"We're very sorry, sir, but we have some news about your girlfriend, Lucy Grant" the other officer said.
"She was here she just went out to run an errand" Henry rambled. He feared what they would say next.
The first officer sighed. "She was robbed, sir, and stabbed."
"Stabbed?" Henry questioned.
Jonah took a deep breath and put his hand on his brother's shoulder. He knew why the officers were there.
"We're very sorry, Mr. Reid. She died. She was pronounced dead at the scene" the second officer finally said.

The Reid Method: The Next Generation
Chapter One- If I Was Dying On My Knees, You Would Be The One To Rescue Me
Jonah Reid was fifteen years old when his brother Henry graduated from high school and was accepted into the University of Los Angeles to attend the European Languages and Transcultural Studies program. He wanted to learn more about other cultures and languages from around the world (other than from his father.)
After Henry's birthday that year, he called his brother. He was concerned when many of the students on campus began to go missing. He revealed to his brother that he had made a decision to return to Quantico in the fall to become a member of the FBI.
Henry completed his Bachelor's Degree in European Languages and Transcultural Studies in June of that year and then returned to Quantico to prepare for the fall semester.
Spencer was proud of his son and he was happy that his studies were making him happy.
J.J. was pleased to have her oldest son back home and safe but nervous about his training at Quantico and then later his career with the FBI.
Jonah completed plenty of research over the next two years and in his final year of high school, he decided he wanted to be a part of making the world a safer place but not necessarily as part of the FBI. He had been influenced over the years by the many stories that he had been told by his mother, father, his uncle David Rossi and now his brother Henry.
Jonah applied to Southern New Hampshire University in his final year of high school and was accepted into the Master's Degree Program of Criminal Justice.
Jonah knew that both of his parents had hidden their true feelings about Henry's decision to join the FBI. He knew that his mother worried that Henry wouldn't come home safe every day. He knew that his father spent most of the day pondering weather or not he should call and check in on Henry. He himself had heard his parents on countless nights talking to each other in their bed wondering about Henry's safety.
When Jonah received his acceptance letter, he made the decision to tell his parents that he had been accepted into the Masters of Science Program with a Concentration in Corporate Finance. He had told everyone that knew he applied this information, including his brothers and sister and his girlfriend, Holly.
Jonah had inherited his father's intelligence and because of this he was able to fast track his program in nine months. He had made the decision halfway through his program that he wanted to be trained to join the CIA.
He returned to Virginia in June of that year and took Henry out on a drive to tell him the truth.
They were parked in front of a closed restaurant when Jonah told Henry the truth. Spencer and J.J. had taken them there many times when they were children.
"Okay, so I may have excluded the truth when I told you about how I got accepted into school" Jonah began.
"What do you mean?" Henry asked.
"I got into SNHU, but I didn't get accepted into the Corporate Finance Program."
Henry felt an ounce of disappointment. "What program did you get into?"
"Criminal Justice" Jonah asked.
Henry sighed deeply. He understood now what his brother had wanted to do with the rest of his life. Something in law enforcement. Something that would make his parents more than they already are.
"Alright, so what's the plan for this year?" Henry asked.
"Training...at the Farm" Jonah looked at his brother.
"The C.I.A.?" Henry raised his eyebrows.
"They want to recruit me" Jonah smiled.
Henry was proud of his brother. As much as he worried both Henry and their parents, Henry was proud of Jonah. He wondered why his brother was telling him of this, especially when CIA recruits are usually kept secret.
Henry pulled his brother in for a hug. "I'm proud of you, Jo" he said as he rested his head on his brother's shoulder. They pulled away and Henry asked why Jonah had brought him out here like this.
"I wanted to tell you the truth. I wanted at least one person to know the truth" Jonah said and hesitated before saying the rest. "I wanted to ask you to be my next of kin."
Henry hesitated and thought about his parents. "You don't want Mom and Dad to be your next of kin? You're only twenty years old, Jo."
"It's more than just of being a next of kin, I want you to be my power of attorney. If something should happen and I can't speak for myself, I want you to do it for me."
Henry took a deep breath and sighed.
"I know it's a lot right now and that's why I wanted to give you some time."
Henry pulled back the button on the side of his seat and leaned back, the seat slid backwards under the weight. He rubbed his eyes and ran his hands through his hair.
"I'm telling Mom and Dad that I got accepted into Georgetown to complete my Master's in Business."
"You're really trying to make this easier for Mom, aren't you?" Henry questioned with a smile.
Georgetown was where their mother had went to school and she would be very proud of having one of her sons graduate from the same school.
"More like trying not to break her heart" Jonah sighed and rested his hands on the steering wheel. "It's better than her knowing the truth."
"What are you going to tell Holly?"
Jonah sighed. "I haven't figured that out yet."
Holly Grant and Jonah Reid started dating three years ago when they were in their final year of high school. She had been accepted to SNHU with Jonah and had finished up her second year of her Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education.
"Speaking of Holly, how have you and Lucy been doing?" Jonah looked over at his brother with a smirk on his face.
Lucy Grant is Holly's older sister. Lucy had completed her first year at Yale in Connecticut and then transferred to NYU in the fall of the past year. Lucy had claimed it was because she wanted to explore New York but Jonah was sure it was because she wanted to explore Henry. He had turned out to be right.
"Don't tell Mom and Dad but I may have asked her to move in with me and she may have accepted."
Jonah chuckled. "I guess I'm not the only one keeping secrets."
Before he started his training in September, Jonah invited his brother out to meet one of his friends from SNHU. They met at a local bar in Virginia.
"Henry, this is Maya" Jonah introduced his brother to Maya Evans. She had also graduated from the Criminal Justice program this year and was two years older than Jonah.
Henry was glad to finally meet Maya. Jonah had talked about her many times over the summer.
"Maya, this is my brother, Henry" the two of them shook hands.
"I've heard a lot about you, Henry" Maya said, her British accent apparent in her voice.
"I've heard a lot about you too" Henry said sneaking a look at his brother.
While Maya was in the bathroom, Henry scooted closer to his brother. "I thought about what you said, what you asked me in June."
"And?" Jonah prompted, wanting him to continue.
"I'll do it" Henry said. "I'll be your next of kin."
Jonah smiled and chuckled. "Thanks, Hen. Took you long enough."
"It's an important decision. Can you promise me one thing?" Henry said, putting his hand on his brother's shoulder.
"What is it?" Jonah asked.
"That I'll never have to actually act on it?" Henry asked.
"Yeah, I don't think that's going to happen. Denial is a good practice though" Jonah chuckled.
Ten months later, Henry woke up to the sound of his phone vibrating on his bed side table. He glanced over at his girlfriend Lucy, sleeping beside him in the bed and rolled over grabbing his phone from the table.
He answered the phone putting it to his ear as he slipped out of the bed quietly not to wake Lucy.
"Hello?" He whispered as he stepped out into the hallway and closed the door to their bedroom.
"Hi, is this Henry Reid?" A female voice asked on the other line.
"Yes, this is he."
"I'm calling from Lennox Hill Hospital. We have you on file as a next of kin for Jonah Reid?"
"Yes, he's my brother. Is he in the ER?"
"Yes, he is" she responded.
"I'm on my way" Henry said urgently and went back in the room to grab his clothes. He got changed in the kitchen quickly and grabbed the keys to his car before heading out the front door of his apartment.
Henry was there with Jonah the day that he got his acceptance letter into SNHU and the two of them had made a deal that day that they would keep Jonah's career plans a secret. This was why that day Jonah asked Henry if he would be the next of kin for him.
Henry parked his car in the parking lot and headed inside the emergency room doors. He was about to approach the nurses station when a female voice called his name.
"Henry" he recognized the accent from the night that he had went to the bar with his brother. He turned in the direction of her voice as she motioned for him to walk over to her.
"They have him in Trauma Room 2" Maya explained as they passed the rows of gurneys in the ER.
Maya opened the door to the trauma room and Henry stepped inside as she held open the door.
"Dr. Cooper, this is the patient's brother, Henry Reid" Maya introduced him as they both stepped inside the room.
"What happened?" Henry asked as three nurses and Dr. Cooper attended to his brother. There was an open wound on the right side of his chest that the nurses were tending to.
"He's been stabbed. He has damage to his right chest cavity and possibly his lung. We're going to place a chest tube" one of the nurses answered.
"Hen" Jonah gasped. He looked over at his brother as he gasped again. "Hen."
"Hey" Henry said softly and walked around to the far side of the gurney and stood next to his brother's head. "I'm here, bud. I'm right here."
"Is...Maya...okay?" Jonah asked as he tried to lift his head to see her.
"I'm fine" Maya responded. "Let the doctors help you, okay?"
Jonah nodded his head and took his brother's hand in his free one. "Thanks for being here."
"Does Jonah have any allergies or any health conditions we need to know about?" One of the nurses asked.
"No allergies" Henry shook his head. "He's a type 1 diabetic."
"We need to get him to the O.R. now" Dr. Cooper insisted.
The nurses pulled up the railings on the gurney.
Henry squeezed his brother's hand as he stood next to the gurney. "I'll be right here, okay? I love you."
"I love you, too" Jonah murmured as Henry placed a kiss on his brother's forehead.
Two of the nurses and Dr. Cooper wheeled Jonah out of the room.
The last nurse stayed behind. "The Doctor will be out with an update as soon as he can. I'll bring you to the waiting room so that you can wait okay?"
"Thank you" Henry sighed.
The nurse lead Henry and Maya out of the ER and then down a hallway to the waiting room on the first floor.
Henry realized that he should call Lucy and let her know where he was since he didn't leave a note or wake her to tell her where he was going.
"I can't tell anyone about this, can I?" Henry asked as Maya sat down in the waiting room.
"No" Maya said. "This should be strictly need to know."
"My girlfriend Lucy is at home and she was asleep when I left. What do I tell her? And what do I tell Holly, Jonah's girlfriend? They're sisters, they are going to talk to each other."
"Just make sure you tell them the same thing" Maya explained.
"What about Mom and Dad? They can't know either?" Henry asked.
"I'm sorry but no" Maya apologized.
Henry sighed and sat down in the chair next to Maya.
"He'll be okay, Henry" Maya assured him. "He's strong."
"I know" Henry nodded. "Was this your first mission?"
"Second" Maya answered.
Henry chuckled as his phone began to ring. It was Lucy calling. Henry showed Maya the Caller ID and then answered the phone.
"Hey, Honey" Henry greeted.
"Hi. Just checking in. I woke up and you were gone" Lucy said.
"Yeah, I got called in to work" Henry said squeezing his eyes shut. He hated lying but he knew he had to protect his brother.
"Oh, okay" Lucy sighed. "I just wanted to make sure you were safe."
"I know. I got to go, okay? I love you."
"I love you too" she responded and they both hung up the phone.
Henry turned to Maya. "I never did thank you for telling the hospital to call me. I appreciate it."
"No problem" Maya said. "I'm glad he at least has you here."
"He has you here, too" Henry said.
An hour later, Henry's phone rang again. This time, it was Holly, Jonah's girlfriend.
"Hi, Holly" Henry greeted as he answered the phone.
"Hi, sorry to bother you. I just wanted to check in on Jo. I haven't heard from him and I've texted and called him a bunch of times. Have you heard from him today?"
"Um, no I haven't heard from him today."
"He's probably just busy at work"Holly tried to reassure herself.
"Yeah, if I hear from him and I'll tell him to call you" Henry lied smoothly.
"Thanks Henry" Holly replied.
"You're welcome. Bye."
Henry once again hung up the phone and sighed.
"It's been over an hour. We should hear something soon" Maya reassured him.
Henry sat down next to Maya again.
Footsteps could be heard coming down the hallway and Henry stood up, hoping it was Dr. Cooper.
A few moments later, Dr. Cooper entered the waiting room wearing his scrub cap and surgical scrubs. He walked over to Henry and Maya as Maya stood up too.
"How is he?" Henry asked anxiously, his heart beat pounding in his ears.
"Stable" Dr. Cooper answered. "We had to preform a thoracotomy to stop the bleeding and repair the damage. There was a complication."
"Okay" Henry said prompting him to go on.
"Your brother's wound caused a tension pneumothorax. Air and blood gathered in his chest cavity which caused his lung to collapse."
"Atelectasis" Henry murmured. This was the medical term for a collapsed lung.
"Exactly. We had to put in a chest tube and continue to repair the damage."
"When will he be out of surgery?" Maya asked.
"If all goes as expected he should be out in another hour or two and then he'll need an hour in recovery before he's moved up to a room" Dr. Cooper answered. "I have to get back in there, okay?"
Henry nodded. "Thank you, Dr. Cooper."
"Thank you" Maya said as Dr. Cooper left the room.
Henry sighed with relief as he and Maya both turned to each for a hug.
When they let go, Maya spoke again. "I should call in and let them know what's going on."
"Okay" Henry nodded as Maya left the room and sat back down in the set of chairs.
Henry's phone rang again and this time it was his mom calling.
"Hey, Mom" he greeted putting the phone to his ear.
"Hi, Henry" J.J. said. "I just wanted to check in and see how your morning was going."
This was typical of their mother. She always wanted to call and check in them every day.
"Uh, it's going good. It's busy" Henry said quickly. Too quickly, he thought. His mother knew all his quirks and when he was lying. It certainly didn't help that both of his parents were profilers.
"That's good, honey. Well, I just wanted to check in on you. Your dad and I are working on a local case today so we're still at home."
"That's good, Mom."
"Alright, well I'm going to check in on your brother and then I'll get back to the case."
Henry's heart rate sped up as he took a deep breath. "Sounds good, mom."
"Alright, I'll talk to you later. I love you."
"I love you too, Mom. Bye." He said shakily and hung up the phone.
Maya walked back into the room as Henry sat back down again. She sat down in the seat next to Henry.
Two hours later, Dr. Cooper entered the waiting room again with news about the surgery.
"The surgery went well" Dr. Cooper announced. "Your brother is being brought to the recovery room and we'll let you know when he gets to his room on the floor and you can see him, okay?"
Henry breathed a sigh of relief as Maya smiled.
"Thank you, Dr. Cooper" Henry shook hands with the doctor.
Dr. Cooper smiled. "You're welcome."
Maya and Henry hugged again.
"Thank you for staying" Henry said.
"Of course. It's Jonah. Where else would I be?"
An hour and a half later, a nurse brought Henry and Maya to Jonah's room on the surgical floor.
She slid the glass door open and let them inside. "He might be a little groggy but he should be awake completely soon."
"Thank you" Maya said.
The nurse smiled and closed the door behind her as she stepped out.
The rhythmic beeping of the EKG was the only sound that could be heard as Henry walked over to his brother's bed and placed a kiss on his forehead. He still had a breathing tube in his nose.
Henry and Maya sat down on the stools next to Jonah's bed as they waited for Jonah to wake up.
"I'm sorry you've had to lie to your family today and to your girlfriend and Jonah's girlfriend" Maya apologized.
"It's okay. I think Jo would proud of how many people I've lied to today" Henry chuckled.
Jonah stirred in his bed and his eyes fluttered open slowly.
"Jo" Henry said as he took his brother's hand in his.
"Hey" Jonah whispered as he squeezed his brother's hand. His voice was hoarse from being intubated.
"How are you feeling?" Maya asked.
"Fine" Jonah said, swallowing hard. "My stomach kind of hurts."
"Yes, anesthesia can do that" Henry agreed.
Jonah grunted and his face screwed up in pain.
"I'll get you some water"  Maya said as she stood up and went to the table at the end of his bed. There was a pitcher filled with water and cups laid out on the table.
Jonah retched and leaned over the side of the bed as the smell of vomit filled the room.
"Oh, God" Maya whispered as she set down the pitcher. "I'll get a doctor."
Henry rubbed his brother's back as Maya left the room to get a doctor.
It was about thirty minutes later when a nurse and Dr. Cooper came back out from examining Jonah.
"It was a reaction to the anesthesia" the nurse explained.
"The sedation and anesthesia upset his stomach so we've given some anti- nausea medication and an IV to keep him from getting dehydrated" Dr. Cooper added.
"And he'll be okay after that?" Henry asked. Maya stood beside him.
"We want to keep him here for at least a week and then we can discharge him and he can recover at home" Dr. Cooper explained.
"Thank you Dr. Cooper" Henry shook his hand again. Dr. Cooper and the nurse walked down the hallway to check on another patient.
"A week of more lies. Yay." Henry whispered sarcastically to Maya.
Jonah was discharged a week later and it was decided that he would recover in Henry's apartment. Lucy was going to be spending two weeks visiting her father in Virginia and Henry had given their parents and Holly the story yesterday that Jonah was going to be on a business trip in Boston for the next two weeks.
Henry had his arm around Jonah's shoulders as he helped him up the stairs to his apartment.
When they reached the door, Henry took out his keys.
"Can you believe Derek and Savannah's baby Hank is six months old already?" Henry asked.
"I know, right? It seems like yesterday he was born" Jonah said. He glanced down at his phone as he got a text message.
"It turns out I have good timing. Holly is spending a girls weekend with the girls from her class so she won't be checking in very much. I'll have to let her know the meeting has been changed from Boston to Albany tonight" Jonah said.
"That's good at least. Less lies" Henry sighed. He turned the keys in the knob and opened the door.
As Henry grabbed the bags off the floor, Jonah heard a female giggle inside the apartment.
"I thought Lucy was in Virginia?" Jonah questioned.
"She is" Henry said as he heard a female laugh from the apartment. He pulled out his gun and entered the apartment. He walked through the kitchen and scanned the hallway as he made it into the living room.
A man and woman were covered only by a blanket kissing on his couch. Henry lowered his gun in confusion when the woman made eye contact with him and he realized who she was.
"Holly?" Henry questioned.
"Henry" Holly gasped as she covered herself up and sat up on the couch. "Lucy said you guys were going to Virginia."
"No, Lucy said she was going to Virginia. By the way, Jonah's meeting was moved to Albany. He's literally right outside."
Footsteps could be heard in the hallway as Jonah walked in behind Henry.
"Jo, I can explain" Holly said anxiously.

The Wolf And The Mecenary
Chapter One- Some Legends Are Told
Peter Hale sat on the edge of the bed as the seven year old stared back at him. She had her mother's copper skin and brown hair and her father's bright green eyes.
"Will you tell me a story, Uncle Peter?" the seven year old asked him. She stared up at him brightly, anticipation in her eyes.
"Okay" he agreed. "Which one?"
"Anything" the girl said.
"Alright" Peter agreed as he looked at the pictures on the bookshelf across the room. The girl stood in the middle with her brothers beside her-one on each side.
Peter pulled the blankets up on the girl and began the story. "I'm going to tell you a story about a little girl just like you."
The young girl smiled at him.
"Her name was Faith and she was the oldest of six children. Her parents met in Spain where her mother was born."
Celestina Hale was a young woman when she met the love of her life. His name was Theodore.
Theodore had been born to parents who were both werewolves by birth. He was born and raised not far from where Celestina and her family lived.
It was the mid seventeenth century when Celestina and Theodore were married. They were both quite young at the age of nineteen. This wasn't strange for werewolves, especially those who had been born as werewolves. It was tradition, in fact, a ritual for the pack that the oldest of the young would marry another werewolf and add to the pack's power.
Theodore took Celestina's last name when they were married. Another ritual, the family takes the name of the member of the pack who would eventually become the alpha. This responsibility fell on Celestina.
As tradition dictated, Celestina and Theodore added to the power of the pack with the arrival of their firstborn baby, a little girl that they would name Faith.
Celestina and Theodore's parents were present for the birth. After Faith had been born they assisted Theodore and Celestina in their first ritual as parents—the transfer of power to their firstborn child. This was how the new member of the pack transferred and added to the power of the pack as a whole.
After Faith had been born, the transfer of power had been completed and Celestina was now the alpha of the pack.
Theodore worked as a doctor while he helped Celestina raise their daughter.
Four years after Faith was born, Celestina and Theodore welcomed their fourth and fifth members of the pack, twins, Mason and Maddox.
"My brothers are twins too" the little girl interrupted the story with a smile.
"I know, Ava" Peter smiled. "Can we get back to the story now?"
Ava nodded and Peter continued with the story.
Three years after the twins were born, Celestina and Theodore welcomed another little girl that they named Eleanor.
Celestina raised and trained their children with the help of Theodore.
They welcomed Josephine Hale two years after Eleanor was born.
Finally, Celestina and Theodore welcomed their last child, another girl that they decided to name Charlotte.
Faith, now twelve years old, was a year away from her first transition as a werewolf like her parents.
"When Faith was seventeen years old, their family left Spain and went to Mexico to be with Theodore's uncle. This was where she met her future husband, Tomas Jameson."
Ava smiled as she listened intently to the story as Peter continued.
With both Faith and Tomas' parents permission, the two began to see each other and they were married at the age of twenty.
As a wedding gift, Faith and Tomas' parents bought them a house in California where they could raise the future generation of Hales.
Tomas like Theodore had also taken the Hale name, as Faith would become the Alpha of the pack like her mother before her.
The bright yellow mansion that had been purchased sat on the outside of a town called Beacon Hills. It would be a place where many of the Hale family would call home.
Peter pulled a picture out of his pocket and held it up so the young girl could see.
"After Faith and Tomas were married, they had three children: Freddy, Natalia, and Peter." Peter pointed to each person as he said their names.
"It's you, Uncle Peter!" Ava exclaimed. "Faith and Tomas were your mommy and daddy."
"Yes they were" Peter nodded.
"Natalia is my middle name" Ava said as she examined the picture.
"Your name is Ava Natalia Hale, your middle name is from your grandmother."
"I think Uncle Peter has told enough stories for one night" Derek Hale said as he walked into Ava's room.
Ava smiled as Derek tucked her in and gave her a kiss on the forehead. "Goodnight, Daddy."
"Good night, honey. I love you."
Ava closed her eyes as Peter left the room and Derek turned off the light and closed the door behind him.
Peter had put the picture of his family on the dresser next to Derek'a family photo. He, like his grandmother and grandfather, had two boys and a girl. Derek and Braeden moved to Boston and got married. The twins, Declan and James had been born first with Ava arriving two years later.
Peter's story would be one of the first that Ava would hear from her family's past. Derek and Braeden had many other stories to tell her, some they could tell her right away and others that had to wait a few years. But some legends just have to be told.
