Ash is asleep.

Eiji doesn’t realize it, at first; Ash has been quiet all evening, simply curling up on the sofa with his head on Eiji’s thigh. The TV’s lights are a vague blue flicker, some nature documentary Eiji is only half paying attention to; he can never watch nature documentaries with too much focus. Every time a baby animal dies or a mother never comes back to the nest or den, he wants to cry.

Ash likes documentaries, though. And Eiji will happily watch anything Ash likes to watch. He doesn’t have to pay too much attention to what’s on the screen if he can pay attention to Ash instead.

And Ash is asleep.

Eiji smiles, overwhelmed by simple, sweet fondness. It floods through him as he gently strokes Ash’s pale, wispy hair back from his forehead, tucking it ineffectively behind his ear. Ash’s hair is too silky-smooth to stay back without copious amounts of both pins and hairspray, but Eiji likes to try to tuck it away all the same.

Ash always says it’s pointless, that it’ll fall down again no matter what, so there’s no point in him wasting his effort trying to pin it back or tuck it behind his ears for him. Eiji just smiles at him and keeps stroking it back anyway.

Ash never seems to know what to do with that. With Eiji putting in effort for him even if that effort seems pointless. Eiji wonders if he’s realized yet, what the point really is.

(It’s okay if he hasn’t. Eiji is happy to wait as long as Ash needs.)

As the documentary keeps playing, Eiji strokes his fingers through Ash’s hair over and over, first smoothing it away from his forehead and then just petting him the way he might a sleeping cat. Ash doesn’t wake, exhausted, and Eiji’s heart squeezes in his chest. Ash trusts him so much…

He admires the faint freckles on Ash’s cheeks, dusted lightly over his nose; they’re fading now that the weather is turning, and in the dimness they’re almost invisible. Eiji treasures them all the more for it. Ash’s pale eyelashes rest against his cheeks, his lips very slightly parted. For once, his brow is unfurrowed. He looks relaxed, and the number of years that relaxation lifts from his shoulders makes Eiji ache.

“You are so young to carry so much pain,” he tells Ash, very softly. Ash would bristle if he heard it, but it’s true. “The world has failed you so badly, my Ash. It is not fair. You deserve so, so much more than this.”

Ash’s hair is silky and fine, flowing like water through his fingers. Eiji has to suppress the urge to lean down and gather Ash into his arms to hold him tight; that would wake him for sure.

“I am going to stay until you realize it. Until you understand just how wonderful you are to me. Until you can see yourself the way I see you. And even after that. Okay?”

Ash just sighs in his sleep. Eiji really, really wants to hold him.

“Keep sleeping if you agree, you are stuck with me forever,” he murmurs, cracking a little smile.

Ash doesn’t stir. His head is a comfortable weight on Eiji’s thigh.

“Yeah,” Eiji says. The documentary keeps playing, blue TV-light flickering across Ash’s cheeks. “That’s what I thought.”

Another AshEiji concept I love is Eiji just doing all of these cute things that Ash probably never got to do as a kid and watching him with PURE LOVE. Or even just simple tasks like drying/washing his hair, getting him cute little trinkets… just simple things that Ash is not used to anyone doing AT ALL and it’s overwhelming at first but it’s Eiji so he loves it all very quickly
