A while ago I was invited to contribute to the Form the Ashes ATLA fan Zine for @recovery-zine!
I got to illustrate this double spread! (which was terrifying, thank you) Pretty sure this is where the thought "Jee survived the north" began to form for me! The theme was about the war ending, peace settling and people getting to come home and reunite with loved ones.

the natla ice moon special knife nonsense reads as an attempt to close the 'plothole' that the moon and ocean spirit appear in such vulnerable forms and watching the original episodes is making me so angry because to view that as a flaw is to view the ocean and moon spirits as a tactical advantage that needs to kept under lock and key like a military secret. yes, the moon certainly has a role in waterbender battle tactics, but the moon and ocean spirits are forces of the natural world that shape everything. the water tribes have a special connection to those forces and a reverence for them. the spirit oasis is a shrine, not a vault. and you know who thinks of the moon and ocean spirit solely as tactical advantages? zhao. the way he exploits cultural knowledge, violates a sacred place, treats this deep spiritual connection and these forces of nature as simply military assets to be taken out is what makes him such a brutal villain. he's not some mastermind cleverly targeting a strategic vulnerability he's so high on colonizer hubris that he thinks he can take out the fucking MOON

I feel like modern au zuko can drive, is very good at it, has his license, and will get you where you need to go but like. with very dangerous efficiency. he drives like Evel Knievel. he drives like a bat out of hell. he whips the wheel hard as fuck and you will see Jesus even if the drive is from your house to the corner store. his car is used and like 10 years old but she is strong and loyal just like her master and wont break down for anything. she'll tear over anything in her path. zuko has given iroh so many mini heart attacks while driving him around (<- because iroh does NOT have his license). worst of all is that zuko does NOT talk or road rage ever when he drives he's DEAD SILENT and simply blasts the radio. and its always either terrifying Chinese opera or crazy shit like Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd

this is such a negligible detail in the scheme of things but ever since my friend pointed it out i haven’t been able to stop thinking about how in natla aang just like. has his bison whistle. from the start. whereas aang finding the bison whistle in “the waterbending scroll” is such a subtle yet crucial moment because it reflects how even though sky bison are thought to be extinct, there are still traces and relics of air nomad culture existing in the world. just like the central object of that episode, katara’s waterbending scroll, is rightfully returned to her as a crucial part of her heritage that has been systematically exterminated, the bison whistle is yet another object that has been paraded around and reduced to a trinket on the market, rather than a meaningful cultural artefact. and the fact that aang is able to recognize and repatriate it for its original intended purpose is microcosmic of the show’s themes overall, of preserving one’s heritage in the face of cultural erasure and genocide. it’s central to aang’s arc, as well as katara’s, that they have an obligation to preserve their cultures at all costs in a world that is so intent on eradicating them. to cling to those traces with all they have and assert their practical value as they embody their unique cultural ideals through its practice rather than merely existing as a curiosity or exotic decoration within a hegemonic paradigm. aang in particular actively functions as a living testament to counter the imperialist assertion that his culture has no place in this world. and he does that through asserting his values, but also through practicing his culture in mundane, quotidian ways, such being able to properly make use of a bison whistle due to actually having a bison, or being able to learn off of the scroll due to being an actual waterbender. and so aang finding the bison whistle at that specific point in time is specifically significant as it concerns the central theme of the episode, and how that reflects the show’s themes as a whole.

Sozin is the worst, i hate him with a burning passion
The fact that the Fire Nation used Sacred Air Nomad sites and temples as lures and traps to kill any surviving Air Nomads makes this whole topic even darker.
This is horrifying. All because they wanted to kill a kid.
And the ending?
Tumblr media
Ugh.
Aang whole story is so tragic. A lot of people constantly shit on him for no reason but this kid carried this loneliness through into his adult years and bottled so much up.
Aang never really accepted the end of his culture.
This comic broke me.

The newspapers start printing salacious and baseless stories about the Fire Lord dating Councilman Sokka, and in his increasingly frantic attempts to prove this isn’t true Sokka ends up getting into increasingly compromising situations with Zuko until finally he shouts, “I’ll prove it to you!” in front of a massive audience and kisses Zuko to show it means nothing.
Except whoopsies, it means everything, and they look at each other a little staggered, Zuko touching his mouth.
And now the papers have a picture for their front-page story.
