Harry Morgan's solipsistic behavior immediately brings to mind the modern representation of the antihero with a controversial righteousness and dominated by self-destructive impulses. It's uncommon to follow a descent into hell like this one watching golden age movies. The more you try to stay out of trouble, the more trouble comes your way.

The inherent, long-established features of the genre are all present, however they are shaped and changed according to requirements that hint at a more overt naturalism. Evil, for example, is a drive to which even those who seem the good ones sometimes succumb. I really appreciated both Murphy's and McGavin's performances, so different one each other but efficient.
