"The distinctive qualities of antique textile pieces always appeal to me, and I particularly like being able to resurrect vintage materials and trimmings, revitalizing often delicate bits of embroidery, beadings, or lace from the Victorian era (or earlier) and incorporating them into new garments. I happened across some rolls of vintage 1930s and 40's fabric originating in France, which I used to create several costumes, including Chancellor Valorum's bruise-colored corded silk underrobe.

and the sunray-pleated underdress in orange shot silk (where different colors of thread are used to weave the warp and the weft) seen in Amidala's Throne Room Costume. The neck of this costume was enhanced by placing layers of gold glass-bead fringing and Victorian bullion-embroidered lace motifs over the yoke area.

I had several excellent suppliers in the United Kingdom. the United States, and, eventually, Australia, for the extensive amounts of vintage paraphernalia that are given a new life in the Star Wars galaxy, but my primary source was in Scotland: the Saratoga Trunk shop, where copious amounts of treasures were constantly sourced and stored for my visits, such as the incredible jet collar and neck piece of the Lake Retreat Dining Gown.

The choice of fabric always very much influences the finished garment, and sometimes, it seemed almost impossible to find, or to have made in time, exactly what we were looking for. Padmé's Episode II Wedding Ensemble is one such example. George's vision of an unpretentious private ceremony at the lovers' Naboo lake retreat with only the Holy Man officiating with no guests (save C-3PO and R2-D2) called for a simple, beautiful gown in incredible fabric. We had finalized on paper how it should look, but just couldn't find suitable material. Eventually, Karen Thorn, our Australian buyer, happened upon an antique lace bedspread from the late Edwardian period (circa 1900). It was absolutely perfect, but beds were smaller then, so there wasn't nearly enough material to make the planned dress. George came into the costume department one Saturday morning and we discussed options, taking turns draping the available fabric on the stand; as we both liked the bedspread so very much, we ended up adjusting the design to fit the available amount of fabric.

Interestingly, when we were shooting the wedding in Italy, our production supervisor Guido Cerasuolo, upon seeing the dress, exclaimed, "Ah, Italian lace!" He went on to explain that it was exactly like the fabrics made by the old ladies on the island of Burano. It's possible that the material originated in Italy, emigrated to Australia, and returned, a century later, to the shores of Lake Como.

'Irredeemable media' is such a funny concept to me because it's never used for stuff like Birth of a Nation or A Serbian Film. It's always The Owl House or My Hero Academia because these people only watch things for children and can't stand any conflict more complex than Super Mario Brothers.

In the town where I grew up, there was a large statue in one of the parks, of a famous historical white colonizer. I'm not going to say who specifically, suffice it to say that it was someone who wasn't worth memorializing for their deeds. And as you can imagine, this statue was a frequent target of vandalism, with paint or toilet paper or eggs on multiple occasions. Now, the local council was generally pretty lax when it came to repairing potholes or other public damage in the town, but every time, 24 hours after this particular statue was hit, the same person would always appear in a Hi-Vis vest, hat, mask and sunglasses, carrying a bucket of water, and wash it clean. They would do it as quickly as possible, but always made sure the face and the name carved at the bottom were generously scrubbed. This only encouraged people to do it again, and so it became a vicious cycle.

Within a year, the statue had sustained so much damage that it was unrecognizable and the lettering unreadable, so eventually the council came and took it down. Also apparently, the person in the Hi-Vis vest didn't even work for the council. They were supposedly just some 'good samaritan' who cleaned it, often before the council even discovered it needed cleaning, so they just let them do it and ignored the problem. They didn't bother putting the statue up again.

Much later, we found out that the anonymous 'samaritan' had been deliberately washing the statue with a bucket of saltwater, which had dramatically corroded it, causing irreversible accumulative damage far worse than spray paint ever would have done. It's even theorized that they were also often the one spray-painting it, just so that they had an excuse to come back after a day to wash it.

i think a big reason that I get frustrated with the "liberals have never made anybody's lives better" is that in the US it used to be legal for insurance companies to charge you more if you were sick or even just straight up deny you the ability to sign up for them if you already had a "pre-existing condition", and this was only stopped by the passage of the ACA during Obama's term. but a lot of people who talk about politics on here are too young to really be affected by that since they would have been on their parents insurance (which the ACA required insurers extend until you're 26). and this was all done via politicking and not blowing up insurance CEOs mansions or whatever.

I'm not saying that the ACA fixed insurance forever, god no. but "you can't deny someone insurance for being sick" is a massive change and people don't realize it!

people online talk so much about hating babies and kids but in "the meatspace" people LOVE babies. hang out with a baby and you will see so many people staring at you with big smiles and waving at you and going "that baby is SO cute" and generally being pleasant unprompted. the lady at the vietnamese place just now gave us like three extra soup spoons because my niece loves those spoons but kept dropping them on the floor and the lady kept giving us more with a massive smile on her face. on our walk today a bunch of construction guys waved and grinned at her the whole time we walked by, and when we passed by an elementary school a little girl said "your baby's really sweet!" babies are not balls of irritation and hatred they are beacons of joy and kindness actually and they bring out the best in strangers. whenever im out with her we have multiple positive interactions with strangers who are so happy to see her. or maybe it's just that my baby niece is the cutest most wonderful baby in the world :]
