S’mores birthday was on the 13th, and Stru’s birthday was the 16. They’re now 8 and 4.

One thing I've unfortunately learned from gardening, hiking and wildlife ID groups on Facebook is that the average person has no idea that "invasive" specifically means when something non-native is ecologically harmful. A whole whole lot of people think it literally just means a "pest" in any context at all, so I catch people in the USA describing our own hornworms, poison oak, even raccoons as "invasive." They just hear news stories about "invasive wildlife" and that it's damaging something and all they think is "oh, this term means when an animal or plant inconveniences me and is hard to get rid of."
I can fully see how that mental connection works and it's really not all their fault. The word does not on its own really tell you how it's meant to be used. That, and a lot of people just don't understand the difference between what matters for the ecosystem and what digs up their store bought unnatural flower cultivars.

I fucking hate the fear mongering over commercial dog foods, as a client I was in with today took that fear mongering to its (il)logical conclusion and was feeding their dog white rice, peas, sweet potato and boiled chicken or ground beef. I asked if the dog was also getting any regular dog food.
"Oh, no, there's things in that. It's bad for them."
This dog has unintentionally lost 3 pounds, 15% of its body weight, in 3 months. The owner looked shocked/confused when I said that the food was not nutritionally balanced and was missing many vital nutrients. I asked where the dog's source of calcium was and that's when it seemed to sink in.
Told the owner that if they really are determined to go the home cooked route that they MUST consult with a veterinary nutritionist, but that dog food is not going to hurt her dog. My dog is 13 and on dog food, albeit a prescription limited ingredient one. My cats made it to 19, 18 and 16 on Science Diet.

I came home today and found Kairi lying still in the goat pen. I haven’t quite figured out what to do with that yet.
We loved her a whole lot. She was only 5.

"The good news is that you do not have to ever ‘get over’ the loss of your dog; you do not have to forget your dog. Mourning and processing your grief will allow you to change the relationship with the tangible dog of fur and drool to a relationship with a dog within your own heart and mind. Your dog will always be there, as will your love. The sharp and painful edges, however, will dull with a deliberate, mindful practice of mourning, and the joy in the connection will return."
-- Grisha Stewart, "You’re Not Losing Your Mind, You’re Mourning: Grief from the Loss of Your Dog"
