from a Celebrimbor/Erestor post-3rd kinslaying fic I started on a whim...

A gentle hand brushed the hair from Erestor’s face, lingering on his cheek, and he could finally see his captor. Celebrimbor was handsome as ever, a little thinner, a little more scarred, but his eyes were the same smouldering grey, his smile held the same warmth. “Erestor,” he said softly. “My love…” Erestor had loved him once, and Celebrimbor had loved him in turn, but that had been before his cousin had renounced his father and betrayed him. (And it was not that Erestor did not understand, but still it had felt like betrayal, and he did not like to think of it, for what did it mean that Erestor had followed his family into two kinslayings when his cousin had so easily turned away?) He had not spoken to Celebrimbor since, had made no attempt to see him, his letters fed unopened to the fire. He was loyal. He would not abandon his family. Now… now he was a prisoner, at Celebrimbor’s mercy, and he hated his cousin all the more for it. “Are you well?” Erestor snarled. “Untie me.” “I cannot,” Celebrimbor said, sounding truly regretful. “You would keep your own cousin prisoner?” “I must. It was the only way to convince Gil-galad to spare you.” “I’d rather be dead,” Erestor spat. “Do not say that, my love,” Celebrimbor pleaded, softly stroking his face. “Everything will be alright, I promise. I will take care of you, and we can finally be together.” Erestor bit his hand.

Dappled Dapper Drabble Pony Race

This weekend, our valiant champions are racing around Bree trying to write the most drabbles over the span of the course of 3 days, and you can still join them!

Blue Ribbon Exhibition The Prince of Cardolan loves to acknowledge hard work and creativity.  Enter your finest works into the Blue Ribbon Exhibition as an exhibition challenger.  Challengers will compete against others for the title of Best of Cardolan in the categories they enter.  All entries for the Blue Ribbon Exhibition are due by noon on June 1, 2024.

Dappled Dapper Pony Picture Coloring Contest The Dappled Dapper Pony Picture Coloring Contest (D²P²C²) is a very basic coloring contest event. Everyone starts with the same base image, and colors and embellishes their pony in whatever way they choose. 

Dappled Dapper Drabbled Pony Race  The Dappled Dapper Drabbled Pony Race is a team writing event which is being run as part of the Cardolan Carnival, a Back to Middle-earth Month 2024 Event.  For groups of 2 to 6, three races will be run throughout the month.  

Lost Treasures Quest  Part of Back to Middle-earth Month is revisiting works that are already in the world -- old favorites and new discoveries.  For the Lost Treasures Quests, you will be able to choose from leaving new commentary on works posted or written before 2020, making rec lists, working on WIPs (writing or art) that are at least a year old or more, or posting works currently unavailable publicly or at a new archive. 

The Prince of Cardolan's Grand Gala The Grand Gala is a live event held on Discord.  During the event, winners of the Blue Ribbon Exhibition will be announced, games will be played, live readings will occur, and generally, it will be a grand time.

Additionally, B2MEM is an open event where ANYTHING you create during March counts!  Feel free to add works you start, add to, or finish in March to the gallery!  You can also host your own events -- let us know what you're up to, and we'll add your event to the list of festivities!

Timeline of Events

The Midway will open on February 24, 2024. 

The Blue Ribbon Exhibition categories will be posted on March 1, 2024.  Entries are due by noon on June 1, 2024.  Winners will be announced at the Tarnin Austa event. 

The Lost Treasures Quest gameboard will be available no later than Feburary 24, 2024.

The Grand Gala will take place April 12-14, 2024.

Posting & Viewing Works

Beginning March 1st, 2024, works can be posted to the AO3 collection. This collection never closes, so while the event will wrap by the end of April, you can always add works later as you are inspired and finish them. If posting on Tumblr, use the tag B2MEM24 and @ this tumblr to make your posts easy to find by our team for reblogs!  You can join the Discord at any time!

Blanket Fort

When Gil-galad silently opened the door and stepped onto the balcony, Celebrían was already there, leaning against the railing and gazing up at the stars.

“You could not sleep either?” he asked. It was hardly the first time that their nightly wanderings had brought them to the same place, and tonight the air was pleasantly warm, only a mild breeze rustling the leaves in the courtyards below, and the night sky was clear and unclouded.

“No,” she replied softly. “I dreamt that he was beside me, only to wake and find myself alone once more.”

They both were waiting for the arrival of the one they had loved. A tentative friendship had grown over it, with the years.

Gil-galad had an idea. It was childish and undignified and far beneath the decorum of a king, but he was a king no longer, and could do as he pleased.

“Would you like to build a blanket fort?”

Celebrían frowned in confusion. “A what?”

“You have never built a blanket fort?” Gil-galad exclaimed, astonished. “Go and bring all the blankets and pillows you can carry, and I will teach you.”

After several mishaps and more laughter than this house had seen in many years they comfortably lay in a nest of pillows beneath a canopy of blankets, talking quietly as the stars wheeled above them.

Huddling for Warmth

“Come here,” Rôg muttered softly as Salgant continued to pace, his breath turning to white clouds in the freezing cold.

Salgant did not seem to hear him. Rôg grasped his arm and gently steered him to the nest of furs, guided him to sit and wrapped them both, and the child, in the furs and blankets. There were more of those than there should have been, though he knew that, if asked, no one would admit to leaving some of their own in Salgant’s tent.

Rôg was quietly thankful for it, but the empty look in Salgant’s eyes worried him. No blankets could keep out the icy fingers of grief, and if he could not warm his friend’s heart, and soon, there would be no hope for him, nor for the tiny life tucked between them.

So he wrapped the blankets tighter around them, laid an arm over Salgant’s shoulder, and whispered, “You must be strong, my friend. For your child’s sake, you must live.”

“I cannot,” Salgant gasped, and all his grief seemed to break free at once. “How could I, when she is… when she…”

Dry sobs shook him, and Rôg gently took the sleeping child from his arms before their father’s grief could wake them, holding them close with one hand, tracing circles on Salgant’s back with the other.

“You can,” he muttered soothingly. “You are not alone, my friend. We all are with you, and we will get through this, together.”

He held Salgant close, let him weep in his arms, sharing warmth and comfort.
