One thing I am worried about is that I'm seeing warning signs of that thing that happens when a recently out character dates another character who has been out for a long time, and the recently out character gets pigeon held into a position of being patronized by their more experienced partner.

Like, there's this nasty little thing that happens where one partner becomes this standard of the queer experience and starts to treat what should be an equal partner relationship like a student/teacher relationship. The newly out person feels pressured to emulate and follow their partner's expectations even if they aren't ready to do so because there's this threat of losing the other person.

This exists not only in the actual media itself, but I've seen it in fan made content as well. There's a tendency to make one character appear significantly older than the other in order to fit a perceived power dynamic. The less experienced character will be written as more juvenile than they actually are in the source material.

I think it's a disservice to the character when that happens.

Idk, I'm just tired of seeing this kind of storyline play out.

The way I'm so sick of the "I don't think you're ready to be out." trope in tv shows.

Like a dude will be out for a year and ask a dude who's been out for five minutes, and when he struggles even a little bit they'll try and give him a some kind of lesson about what it means to be queer before dumping him.

As if being out isn't a constant struggle for everyone.

And it never really ends.

And there's never a moment where you have it all figured out either.

I'm not saying someone needs to stay in a relationship where they're not getting what they want out of it, or they feel stifled.

What I'm saying is, if a dude panics on his first date after being kissed by another guy for the first time, 3 days ago, maybe give him some wiggle room.
