something that has a) boosted my confidence and b) helped me define my boundaries in regards to the extent I feel comfortable with people making comments on my life/appearance/choices is to refuse to be a participant in other people's insecurities.
and what i mean by that is, have you ever had a friend/family member say something like: "look at us, we should lose weight" or any kind of self-deprecating comment that includes you but reveals their lack of self-esteem? make it clear that you don't feel that way about yourself. don't ignore the comment, exclude yourself from that kind of self-pitying narrative explicitly. do not insult them, do not be passive aggressive. a simple "i'm actually satisfied with the way I look" will suffice.
i am sympathetic to anyone experiencing self-esteem issues, but you do not get to drag me into this.

“If I had a super power, it would be to fly. I would tell other children from around the world to come and play with me and my sisters, and to drink tea together!” – Mohamad, a Syrian refugee in Lebanon

“In Event of Moon Disaster”, July 18, 1969.
White House speechwriter, William Safire, was asked to write a speech that President Nixon would make in case the Apollo 11 astronauts were stranded on the Moon.
It was never delivered, and this speech was quietly tucked away into Nixon’s records.
