I need to take a moment to scream about some of my favorite bits in my most recent chapter of Until the Mockingjay Sings.

This is the part that everyone seems to have immediately latched onto. And that's fair because I love this exchange. One of those telling moments of character that you can never turn back from. Coryo straight up mocking Sejanus for thinking what they have is love.

Sejanus finally feeling hopeful! There is something out there besides the cruelty of the capitol and the systemic changes that have destroyed the district that Sejanus once called home, turning it into a cop-making factory. This is his first taste of a rebellion that he actually feels he could be a part of.

Okay okay okay so this is a subtle little thing that I doubt anyone picked up on. But it was intentional here to describe the tastes of the kiss in ways that only originate from Sejanus himself. Because Coryo isn't in it. He may be participating, but his heart isn't there in the way that Sejanus's is.

10/10, I'm weak for their toxicity

"You know what." Coriolanus has always reserved a bit of shame for what he and Sejanus have been doing. Even if a part of him did want to pursue the relationship. So he's never talked about it. About them.

And at the end of the day, the thoughts that he lets himself chase are the ones about Lucy Gray. Because it's easier for him to admit that he loves a district girl who "isn't really district" than it is for him to love a boy who grew up in the Capitol who bleeds his love for his district home.

He would never admit to anyone, let alone himself, that he loves Sejanus Plinth. That he's having sex with Sejanus Plinth.

And then he throws Sejanus's words right back at him, mocking him for his inability to accept his own love, whether it's real or not, for Lucy Gray. You want to mock me for not being able to talk about this? You are the one who can't accept reality. It's both true and also the biggest redirection from Coriolanus's own complex relationship with his thoughts.

There's also the "Here in District Twelve. We shouldn't..." part. Which is both a reference to Lucy Gray, to Coryo finally being closes enough to chase her, as well as to the fact that Coryo is out of the direct sphere of influence of the Plinth family. When he was living under their roof, there was this constant worry of doing the wrong thing. Offending the wrong Plinth. Part of him indulged in Sejanus's desires because he knew it protected him.

Here, far away from the Plinth mansion, already starting to make a name for himself with his own accomplishments, Coryo doesn't feel the need to play into what Sejanus wants quite so much. (that's not to say that there wasn't/isn't real love in what they have. i wholeheartedly believe there was. but Coryo doesn't want to admit to any of that so...)
