We looked inside some of the posts by that-wasnt-so-bad and here's what we found interesting.
fantasy or dystopian? banana bread or pumpkin bread? tea or coffee? tarot or oracle? thunderstorm days at home or sunny days at a market? strawberries or blueberries? oversized sweaters or oversized graphic t-shirts? smell of rain or smell of bonfires? hardcover or paperback? ice cream or frozen yogurt?
At 40, Franz Kafka (1883-1924), who never married and had no children, walked through the park in Berlin when he met a girl who was crying because she had lost her favourite doll. She and Kafka searched for the doll unsuccessfully. Kafka told her to meet him there the next day and they would come back to look for her.
The next day, when they had not yet found the doll, Kafka gave the girl a letter "written" by the doll saying "please don't cry. I took a trip to see the world. I will write to you about my adventures."
Thus began a story which continued until the end of Kafka's life.
During their meetings, Kafka read the letters of the doll carefully written with adventures and conversations that the girl found adorable.
Finally, Kafka brought back the doll (he bought one) that had returned. “It doesn't look like my doll at all," said the girl.
Kafka handed her another letter in which the doll wrote: "my travels have changed me." the little girl hugged the new doll and brought her happy home.
A year later Kafka died. Many years later, the now-adult girl found a letter inside the doll. In the tiny letter signed by Kafka it was written:
"Everything you love will probably be lost, but in the end, love will return in another way."
Comments: wow! I love your work! You’re an amazing writer, I can’t believe you share all this stuff with us for free! So well thought out, I love you as writer. This work is amazing. <3 <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)
I'd personally sooner look through newer be a use the oldest, whilst fandom faves/classics, inhibit growth of newer stories/authors.
I've read fics with 400 kudos I've absolutely /hated/ e a use they were like five years old, but ones a few months old with two kudos r being right up my street.
truth is, look around and you might jsit find plenty of gems thst deserve so much more love than they're gonna get :)
downside of searching: tedious
upside: quantity does not equal quality and finding hidden gems and supporting new authors is beautiful :)
AO3 Search Modes
Find fandom on AO3. Skim down the most recent fics in the fandom.
Downside: Overwhelming, much chaff.
2. Old School
Go to specific fandom. Sort by kudos. Start at the top.
Downside: Oldest fics tend to have the most kudos, also things that update a lot or crossover with more popular fandoms. Newer stuff gets lost.
Go to specific fandom. Sort by kudos. Start at the end. (Note: some actual gems can be found this way, but it requires much patience.)
Go to specific fandom. Read everything. Not recommended for Very Large Fandoms. Can be done with newer, smaller fandoms.
Downside: lots of mediocre fic in many fandoms.
Go to specific fandom. Search for a specific pairing. Exclude every pairing you don’t like. Exclude keywords that you dislike. Exclude all crossovers in general or specific crossovers if your fandom has a natural crossover (i.e. Doctor Who/Torchwood, Stargate SG1/Atlantis). Sort by bookmarks.
Downsides: you miss some newer good stuff, but starting from the top the first chunk of fics are likely to be very good and exactly what you want.
Click on a tag you like in a fic you just read.
Go to the exclude section and start eliminating fandoms you’re not interested in, saying in a squeaky goblin voice, “Not you! Not you! Not you!”. Filter. Repeat until the top fandoms are all things you like and there are no more than a handful of fics in other fandoms represented. Back up when AO3 balks. It takes a while, so if you’re in Very Large Fandoms, this is a great method, and if you like obscure fandoms, not so much.
Exclude pairings and tags you don’t like.
Eliminate all unfinished fic.
Sort by bookmarks.
Downside: Periodically get thrown by a random fandom you’re not in showing up anyway. Get jarred by switching fandoms constantly.
Upside: Variety of really good fics that people liked enough to bookmark.
What’s your method?
I never ever ever watch E3 stuff because literally every media is down to whatever ah individual likes.
and also unless there's a lot of information and it's been in the world for years plus nearing release date, I really don't care bevause so much can change from an E3 announcement to end product.
like I suspect my brother will. be thinking of the FF game thing because me and my brother enjoy final fantasy - but it's still somewhat niche in comparison to other things all things considered.
so it jsit kinda... low key... bugs me whenever E3 comes around tbh lol.
like of there's nothing I want I'm not gonna make a big deal out of it be a use the things I want I know takes absolute /years/ and are developed by folks who have like... five game projects going on /at the same time/ thst can make soemthing thst make take 3 years take 10.
like I'd sooner be told about it when it's /ready/ rather than when it's like a 'btw we've just started work on this but you will see zero news on it for six - ten years' honestly.
You can’t deserve a person’s love. You’ll drive yourself crazy thinking like that. They either love you, or they don’t. That doesn’t mean you weren’t good enough for them to love you, because love isn’t something you earn by being good enough. It isn’t something that can be quantified or doled out. Don’t blame yourself for not being loved how you need to, just teach yourself how to look for love where love lives.
after you’ve been through like a string of fandoms and you’ve decided your favourite character/s for each one, there will come a day when you will list all your faves from each fandom side by side and look at them carefully and realise
