found a way around* my dashboard defaulting to the "for you" tab by just changing the tumblr bookmark in my browser's bookmarks bar to https://www.tumblr.com/dashboard/following (and then always using said bookmark to refresh my dash instead of clicking the "t" in the upper left corner).

in case anyone else needs a bandaid for this terrible staff decision.
