The Body

In most areas of the USA it is possible to murder a man and when one is brought to trial, one only has to say that the victim was a queer & that he tried to touch you & the courts will set you free. the only thing you really have to understand about geoff rickly is that he was created in a lab to be your weird as fuck eccentric high school english teacher who is mercilessly mocked and psychologically tortured by most of the class because he’s a very easy target but dearly adored by the kids who are about to figure out they’re trans because he is also deeply lovable and has a face you could come out to. and he was one semester away from becoming exactly this when the universe took a left turn and he accidentally became a rockstar who influenced the direction of an entire subculture of music. and ever since then the universe has been trying to make up for this little mishap by punishing him with a series of misfortunes almost poetic in their magnitude. he IS the tragic postmodern protagonist he should be trying to critically analyse with bunch of unenthusaistic sixteen-year-olds who only know how to deal with their unfortunate crush on him by bullying him.

Geoff Rickly's interpretation of Leonard Cohen's Famous Blue Raincoat, posted as part of a mixtape he did in 2013, is in dialogue with the original version and features lyrics that flip the position of address, talking back to Cohen's original lyrics and providing the other half of the story the original song tells. 

I posted this a while ago but didn't fully realize what it was. First I thought it was a regular cover with some words changed, then I thought it was written from the woman in the song's POV (probably because Geoff changes the line "my brother/my killer" to "my brother/my lover", yowza!) but I finally got my ducks in a row and transcribed the lyrics and I'm posting this because it's a cool little song and I think it's cool when songwriters do stuff like this.
