Now you might be asking Joy isn’t todays the 13th, yes but stuff happened yesterday 😅 let’s not talk about it🔥😊🔥 (fire? I don’t see fire, do you see fire?) I do genuinely apologise anyone that’s enjoying these posts, I got a lot of transphobic and racist messages yesterday and was dealing with them and taking time for myself, now on with the recommendation. The story takes places a couple months after the famous book & film Simon vs The Homosapien agenda aka Love Simon but follows Simons best friend Leah, it follows her last year of high school and all the trouble it brings. Of colleges, beauty standards and figuring out if the girl you like is really gay or just a really friendly straight girl. Leah is fun and interesting it’ll keep your attention with its drama, laughs and heartfelt moments, it stands on its own right from Love Simon and honestly even better. Leah is a powerful plus size bi girl who just wants to finish high school but that doesn’t mean it’s going without a bang.

Also just as personal note who else was pissed they casted Katherine Langford from 13 Reasons Why as Leah in Love Simon, this isn’t me saying anything about Katherine or her performance I really liked it, this is about the producers casting her as a plus size character whose size 20 or 22 and Katherine is probably half that but because Hollywood has terrible standard of beauty they slimmed down a character for the plus size community.

Today’s pick is Dreadnought by April Daniels @msaprildaniels from The Nemesis Trilogy

It follows Danny a closeted transgirl at first but once the greatest hero Dreadnought is killed by Utopia, she is suddenly given their powers having to carry the mantle and changed into their ideal image. Now feeling euphoric from their transformation Danny has to deal with her abusive family and the expectations of other heroes and an outright terf who don’t think a queer person is the right image for the title Dreadnought or even deserve it. Danny burdened by all of this has to also deal with stopping Utopia but if the previous Dreadnought couldn’t how will she?.

Get enthralled in Danny’s story as she fights through all of this and tries to find herself through it. This book is essential for the platform and image it gives to trans people as Danny not just being a hero but the superman of her universe, it tears away at the limits put on us by others and shows us we deserve to take up space and we may be different but we’re just as capable as anyone else. Also the whole idea of being able to transition instantly to where you want to be is prime transfix euphoria🏳️‍⚧️🤸🏽‍♀️🏳️‍⚧️. So give Danny a chance and fly with this story😊

This is a semi autobiographical book based on the life of creator Chii in manga form, it’s a one of a kind in my opinion the way they decided to tell they’re story has allowed for a lot of heart and a lot of laughs. It’s a story you won’t regret picking up and with it’s softness you’ll be a mushy mess by the end. It also feels really relatable to trans people women in particular with who it’s creator is, it has some awkward moments & jokes I feel we all just nod along with😂. For those that don’t know Loki’s release is more significant than the rest of Marvel Disney’s series because it’ll be featuring a trans superhero for the first time 🥳 speculated to be portrayed by Angelica Ross known for their role in Pose, American Horror Story, Her Story. This hasn’t been directly confirmed however Marvel was apparently looking for a trans actress last year for Loki and Angelica Ross thought to be this actress, has not directly denied it nor confirmed it. Now you might be asking why does this matter 🤷🏽‍♀️ because if it’s true which it seems to be, Disney a brand that has queer bated for so long and avoided directly featuring queer characters for fear of affecting their child image brand. Will finally allow representation of queer characters we have seen this slowly changing with The Owl House and it’s direct hints at two main queer characters in Amity & Luz (which was nearly railroaded by people in Disney) but wither this is done for profit or for care, I honestly don’t care as long as they do it, I’m happy. Because Angelica Ross’s performance and other queer representation, would not only allow young trans people to have an image to look to in a fantasy medium but also as a women of colour something we don’t always see in trans representation it’ll be so inspiring to lots of other Trans women & women of colour, . Plus it could create real change in how we’re viewed, trans women are lobbied against and perpetuated in this false image of dangerous to children, just as gay people were treated by the media in the late 20th century, this character could allow for better education and better representation. So for once I’m gonna say support the big conglomerate 🤸🏾‍♀️🏳️‍⚧️🤸🏾‍♀️ and watch Loki and if it does feature Angelica Ross discuss it, critically and openly as to allow education and growth as a society.

With such a hot summer I feel I’d recommend a nice cafe to cool down in and what better than the one from Love Me From Who I Am by Kata Konayama

It follows Mogumo a lonely high school student who just wants to be understood and accepted for who they are and with the help of Tetsu & his sister’s maid cafe they find just that, until they realise the cafe is for Otokonoko (male crossdressers). Mogumo however isn’t a cross dresser they’re non binary but even so everyone promises to support them and make this a place they feel welcome. It feature multiple LGBTQIA+ characters and deals with lots of different issues in the queer community and shows how the creator clearly educated themselves for this series. It deals with misgendering throughout but in a very real way of lack of knowledge in others and how educating them can lead to understanding and maybe even questioning in themselves. Also it has that first moment of validation in yourself when you come out and feel supported ☺️ ahhh it’s soooo good. So give Mogumo a chance and love them for who they are

Today’s pick is one of the sweetest books I’ve ever read and feels like an LGBTQIA+ book for all ages. George by Alex Gino

It follows a young closeted trans girl who just wants to be accepted like everyone else but doesn’t know what to do, she knows she’s different and that isn’t always seen as a good thing but she learns that while pain can come with being different so can acceptance and love, so follow the story of this sweet little fool and her love for Charlotte’s Web. It’s a lovely heartfelt story that to me feels like a story of comfort wither your coming out, living out and proud or just wish we had the same support at that age.
