A fantasy Romeo and Juliet retelling set in Shanghai but make it monsters and mobsters anyone? That’s what These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong is all about. This book was so so so cool, there’s also this major “she’s got Pride and he’s got prejudice” thing going on which I, of course, loved. 418 I am a Teapot is an error code that indicates that the server refuses to brew coffee because it is, in fact, a teapot. And it’s also a title of a sci-fi dystopian book I’ve just finished by Edgar Scott! This book follows the story of a “staff” who has been in an accident causing him to, well, “wake up” is the best I can describe it. In a world where people can give up their freedom for being literally constantly online, “staff” have an interface installed into their brain that allows their body to be programmed to do drudge labor (trash service, assembly lines, customer service) while they remain online in what is really a cush virtual prison. When staff #418 wakes up, he wonders why his life is less valuable than other people. This is a sci-fi allegory on slavery. It’s written from the POV of both 418 and his owner, King (a wink and a nudge again) who wonders the same thing - why does he believe a staff’s life to be worth less than his. This book was a bit monologue-y (for obvious reasons) and the writing style is very similar to Dune. I have a tendency to prefer much more emotionally charged stories, but it was still a really interesting read and even has some discussion questions in the back to make you think. Do you like multiple POV’s? This is a controversial topic I know, you either love it or you hate it, like cilantro! I love them. And I just finished The Bone Shard Daughter, which was an amazing one! POV 1: A princess with no memories, necromancy, and a competition for the throne. POV 2: A smuggler searching for his stolen wife, magical creatures, a sinking island, and a growing mission to save children from a dangerous fate. POV 3: A governor’s daughter whose girlfriend turns out to be her father’s worst enemy. Who will she choose? POV 4: A woman on an island who wakes up from a spell and realizes she is a prisoner. This was a 5-star read for me, I loved every POV, I love where this story is going. This is the first of the Drowning Empire series and I will definitely be reading the next one. The fantasy elements and world building and character development are all on point. Which do you prefer, fantasy or sci-fi? They tend to get grouped together, SFF, and sometimes they are both. I love fantasy, but the details of sci-fi and the sheer fact that they could be more real at some point in the future really pulls me into a world. *BOOK REVIEW* ⠀⠀ I was RIDICULOUSLY excited to be sent Harrow the Ninth by @tordotcompub to review. Psyched! If you haven’t read my review of Gideon the Ninth, I tried not to include any spoilers of that book in this review. But read that one first! Tamsyn did it again with this book, she made me fall absolutely in love with her characters. Seriously. This book makes me understand the “Space Opera” name for the genre. Because it has that epic-ness to it. Harrow has become a Lyctor. She’s lost everything to do it. And now, fighting in an unwinnable war with planet sized enemies alongside 10,000 year old Lyctors who, for some reason, hate her, she has an even bigger problem. Harrow is insane.
