cpn talk: of camping fans, the number 38 and future concerts.

happy monday to everyone! ^^ what better way to start the week than some clowning. i hope this makes it easier for you to get through the day and rest of the week. nothing too ground breaking, just some good old minor cpns i picked up here and there. enjoy~ and yes i used that gif of gege as clickbait! hahahahaha!

i wanna start with a usual observation, the way they do not clash in terms of project promotions. in the past weeks, WoF was in full swing, and now it’s FPU which will most likely continue till it’s release and the week after that. in the meantime, XZ is on radio silence. you still have the usual ads and stock photos from XZS + some random hot searches but nothing else. i have a feeling that after Bobo’s promotions, XZ will come out for LOCH.

and speaking of XZS posting photos, let me direct you to this one. he is holding a fan again. not the 380 yuan but we’ve seen it before and he is using it during his drama filming right now.

so as the clowns that we are, we had to search for it so we can get the same style. how it’s describe on online markets is: F30 handheld rechargeable small fan mini portable wind power household. carry-on fan for camping. camping? interesting. of course you can use outside of that, but with our cpn of them and camping— this is yet another clue. did the same guy who bought him the 380 yuan fan before, searched up something his beloved can use for camping and beyond? they are so cute! i swear! i’m here for this whole soft era of them loving camping and relaxing!

bonus clowning is that the photoset form XZS was posted 19:30 which was the broadcast time for WoF. and considering it was the finale, maybe this was also ZZ’s gift? we already speculate that he is fond of lai lai so it could be…. 🤷🏻‍♀️

moving on to the number 38, which was a recurring number we have noticed from posts made sunday 4/7. 38 zhan bo. 💕 it could mean nothing but somehow, it got me, especially since yibo used it.

now about the future concert of yibo which i screamed about here & here — whether that’s true or not— us cpfs will of course do what we do best. to clown. so here are some points:

1. some are connecting this concert thing to a previous hs related to xz. it was about him and his company adding services which includes concerts. the actual tag was: #xiaozhanstudio adds new commercial performance license#. of course whatever this is, if yibo does hold a concert, it will be under yuehua but i understand where the clowning is coming from.

this comment was so hilarious tho 😂😂😂😂

2. what if yibo invites guests? that’s usual for solo concerts. so we’ve been day dreaming about him singing bu wang, and why not wuji too? and then invite xiao zhan? imagine that. lol. and solos couldn’t even be angry cause wyb invited him. wouldn’t that be amazing?

3. this part in one of xzs vlogs where gg was in an open area and he “jokingly” said something like “Come to my concert, thank you!”

we may be thinking too much about it but what if. what if gege also plans to have a solo concert some time in the future? i know both of them are so focused on being actors but they also have so much passion for performing.

i’m imagining how they both have a bucket list and one entry there is to have a solo concert. i hope we get to witness that come true ✨

FINALLY, with yibo’s post earlier, we saw him playing tennis. so tennis boyfriends at it again! 🎾

Character Playlist: Morgan

Happy off-week! Episode 3 is coming out next Monday, so whilst we wait, here's a playlist all about my beloved Morgan Jones. Last time we posted about Dai, (you can find that playlist here), because episode 1 is very much his episode. Episode 2 is Morgan's, and as you might notice, she's on a much darker and spookier path than her found sibling.

Morgan's been through so much. The Cataclysm was awful for everyone, but Morgan was traumatised long before the world ended, and things have just got worse. She is explicitly terrified of her own name in this new world - of what it means and could mean. She so desperately doesn't want to hurt people, and she's so terrified that she will.

2. Witch's Rune by S. J. Tucker

Morgan Le Fay! Witch, sister, villain, survivor. Our Morgan is intimately familiar with the story of her namesake, and thinks of Morgan like a witch inside her, or a ghost haunting her. The whole gang have different perspectives on how the Names work, but our Morgan definitely sees it like a curse.

3. Sing of the Moon by The Collection

So we sing of the moon and the face that it hides Shining just half of its truth to our skies But bring me the sun that gives it all its light I don't want to just wait to die

Morgan is very much the moon to Dai's sun. I often think of them like a binary star system - they are completely inextricable from each other, and if they were ever separated they'd both spin out and be lost in chaos. Morgan is more shy than Dai, more reserved. He brings out her lighter side, but she's always aware of the fact that one day that will end.

4. Old Churchyard by The Wailin' Jennys

Everyone's lost people, but Morgan most all. Most traumatically, she saw her younger brother Ben die in front of her - a fresh trauma from which she still hasn't recovered. Morgan doesn't fear death. She's not a practicing Christian (I think she's an atheist) but she sees it as a simple, restful end to a long and painful life. What she does fear is losing people - it's the thing she fears most of all.

We'll learn more about Morgan's childhood later in the series, but suffice it to say that every day of her life, Morgan has gotten up and tried again. For me she's very much that image of hope with bloodied knuckles, forcing herself to stand up and get back into the fight. It isn't easy for Morgan to keep surviving, let alone to keep trying to be happy. But she tries, because Dai loves her, and she loves him, and he reminds her that life is worth living.

The gang don't know if magic is exclusive to the Phenomena, or if it's even magic as we would describe it. They don't know if it's mushroom spores or something alien, science they don't understand, strange divinities or straight up magical powers. They also don't know whether or not Morgan has magic. If she does, it's not presented itself in any way that's obvious to her - beyond her nightmares. But she often has dreams about the monsters they've faced, and it's hard for her to untangle nightmares from trauma from dreams that might be more significant. Part of her worries that somehow she's making things real, and drawing the monsters closer to them.

Morgan's biggest enemy is herself. She's most afraid of herself - and Morgan le Fay. She's terrified of hurting people and losing control. But if she could ever just let herself be angry, even more outspoken - if she could relax enough to try and enjoy all the ferocious freedom of one of history's greatest witches? She could be incredible. And even now - she has the capacity for a ferocious kind of burning joy that she has stolen from everyone and everything that's ever tormented her. When she parties, she parties hard.

Morgan has always been kind of terrible at being 'a woman' - whatever that means. She's not demure, she's not obedient, gentle, or agreeable, and she's never been especially feminine. She's always been outspoken, blunt, short-tempered and direct - a woman who acts first and talks later. In the world before, that could be a problem sometimes - something she was insecure about, that made it hard to fit in (though figuring out her queerness helped a lot). In the apocalypse, all of these things are exactly why she survived, and there's a part of her that's determined to snatch a life from the ruins and the ashes.

*A note on Christianity in Camlann - I'm not a practicing Christian, I consider myself agnostic. But because I grew up in a Christian family in the UK, I am culturally Christian. However we might feel about it, Arthurian legends and British folklore are pretty inextricable from Christian influence. Christianity's been here a long old time, and we don't have a lot of reliable written sources that cover the pre-Christian period. As a result, some of the songs on these playlists contain Christian themes. I hope that isn't too troubling to people. To be very clear, all faiths deserve reverence and respect, and Christianity is far from the only religion practiced in Britain over the last 2,000 years.

16. a tiny detail in canon that u want more people to appreciate

we talked about this before but i really like how rise of phoenixes handles the crossdressing trope. quippe quest mentions this in their videos at some point i think; feng zhiwei is allowed to actually look like a man when she dresses up as a man, and the additional layer her crossdressing shenanigans add to the exploration of her arc that ends in her being completely stripped from all she has at the beginning (agency, autonomy, freedom, value) is all the more gutpunching. i look at her being all unrestrained (as a person) when she dresses up, moving around freely and doing what she wants (as per her nature), and then i look at who she is forced to become once the emperor finds out about it and it gets public. its honestly horrible, like a horror movie (feng zhiwei fmv horror edit?). so the maturity and nuance with which they approach and utilize it is smth i wish would be talked about more, if only because its so dear to me personally and i think everyone should talk about it all the time

,,,, ,,, actually this probably doesnt really count as a tiny detail //w// , ,, i thought of it because theyre so casual with it in canon!!! though feng zhiwei‘s ~real gender~TM is a plot point, the show doesnt really make a fuss around the crossdressing in itself (compared to how other stories usually handle it). so i thought of it as tiny and a detail even though its not really tiny, and its more the attention to detail that i would like for everyone to appreciate forever.

HERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE ANSWER: zhiwei‘s long ass hair that she takes down at the end of the forst day at the academy when sits in the window just before going to bed . everyone is talking about ning yi‘s hair but!!!! what about hers!!!!! its literally right there!!!! its such a beautiful scene, she looks so good. and i think its the only time she ever takes down her hair where we see it right? right? it doesnt happen at all at any other point :) surely :). so beautiful when u can take down your hair of your own volution in a world where taking your hair down signifies vulnerability and can unmask you as a woman! :) :):):) great scene where zhiwei is in full control of her fate and pursues her happiness and taking her hair down in the privacy of her room, with only gu nanyi to see, is such a big show of trust (in him) and faith (in her future) :) im fine why do u ask

20. your very first fandom

oh this is a mean pick!!!!!! me having like a hole in my head etc!!!!! but one of my earliest beloveds media that i could count as me entering a fandom of any kind is the donald duck franchise. dont really have a better name for it. i could call it the Mickey Mouse Franchise but that would be A Lie. mickey mouse has nothing to do with it at all! i had fan magazines and would dress up as phantomias and would spent time reading comics with my friends and brother and i would annoy literal strangers into lending me their comics if i so much as sniffed out that they had a collection at home. i also drew and wrote fanart and fanfic, though i never finished anything, my aspirations were too high for my fragile constitution also known as patience and stamina TvT. smth thats STILL a problem tbh. i cant write short stuff yet keeping it up for so long is Hard. anywhomst. i remember looking at the pictures before i learned to read and making up the story in my head so this being my first fandom might not be that far off!!!!!!

Ten things I noted about the four-part miniseries “UnDeadwood” :

Now I decided to watch this even though I haven't watched Deadwood (probably should put it on my list), and knowing I'm not much of a western fan except when mixed with other elements (hello Firefly, my favorite show cancelled after one season). But let's be honest, I said to myself, I'll watch anything Critical Role does, and anything Marisha and Travis are in (bonus points for Anjali Bhimani, whom I also adore).

Damn, this miniseries was good. What can I say ? It got me !

More notes & spoilers under the cut.

First off, the production side of this miniseries is incredible, even more so when I'm coming from CR3 where they hired a team of experts on how to make amusements parks (!!!) to have a better set. The little town at the center of the table is well made, and the shots of the buildings really give a nice spatial representation. The opening credits are cool, and seeing the cast in costume really is a joy that a single one-shot cannot bring to the table. Also they all look HOT, that goes without saying. Also the accents ! I had the vapors.

Oh, and the music !! I saw it was Jason Charles Miller who did it, and of course he did ! That man is a nerd in a ZZ Top costume.

Brian's evident love for the original story of Deadwood (both the show and the real town) is evident and charming.

I love that the first close-up shot of Matt we see is : him, and his hair gently floating in the wind (of the studio).

The obvious editing bothered me a little bit at the beginning, but I think that was just because I wasn't used to it... Maybe some cuts were harsh... But yeah, the editing grew on me after the first episode. And I understand why they used it specifically in this short format, and to give a smoother feeling to the story. It made everything feels like a true immersion - whereas episodes of Critical Role are more a feeling of a show (which I love !)

Fogg, as he is enjoying his time with 3 ladies : "Oh, Reverent ! I got three of 'em in here, you sure you don't want a share ?" The Reverent : "No ! I have my own three ! The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit."

"It's ... hiiiiiigh moooon !" Nice one Brian

"Curse my white-collar upbringing !" Marisha, you do not have to make me laugh like that, but I thank you nonetheless

I like the system of using both dice and cards for power or initiative. I'm gonna check it out. I need to see other systems besides D&D.

Arabella, about Fogg's injured leg : "You look like a 13-years old who just got her time of the month, so why won't you let me take a look at that leg ?" AMAZING SAYING

Love how effortlessly they integrated the rules and the background together. The idea of spending a chip to go see The Bartender and ask some information if you're stuck, and also get a shot of whisky, is a good one.

As soon as Brian said there was some revenants about town, I was suuuuure we were gonna see Arabella's freshly dead sister. And I was right ! But it was devastating nonetheless.

We only saw NPC Katie for like 2 minutes, but she managed to make me fall in love with her in record time !

Marisha loving playing ladies who are snoops and weirdoes and wants to find things and love gory things and/or mystical shit (Beau, Alexandra in the Cthulhu one-shot, Arabella, Laudna). Yes I know she definitely loved playing Keyleth (my beloved) even if she was, as a character, very far from what she is or what she usually likes. But I also love that we see her preferences.

This is why I love those kinds of actors who are all in. The consequence of Aloysius failing his spell was that "he forgot for 6 days attachments on an emotional level". And boy did Khary run with it. Retrospectively, I think Aloysius could have spared Clayton Sharpe, in the end ; but no, not with this consequence. And Khary knew what he was doing, he was crying while doing it, but he did justice to both his character, and the consequence. To an exterior eye, this could be waste of character development, but no, it's the opposite !

Is Al Swearengen secretly the Dealer ?? He said the same words ! "Greed ain't cheap"

THEY QUOTED THE FUCKING PRINCESS BRIDE, or close !!! I love them for this. "You seem a decent man. I hate to kill you." "You seem a decent man. That I'd hate to be killed by."

The ending my god. No notes, just tears.

I know that with Brian exiting the CR world, it's not going to happen, but man, imagine the parallel universe where UnDeadwood 2 was a thing... I want to go to there

currently watching:

1. KinnPorsche - I remember watching the trailer and not understanding all this hype surrounding it. I thought it’d be boring and serious (like other mafia shows tend to be) but oh boy was I wrong. I could write long essays about it and its themes and interesting characters and dynamics between them and all that but there are plenty posts out there written by ppl that actually can use words so I’ll just say it’s FUN so much FUN

2. Old Fashion Cupcake - the whole vibe is just ahh from warm colours to chill music (that gives me persona vibes) and whole premise is also just so heart-warming, watching two grown man slowly breaking from their routines of everyday corporate work life and just enjoying little things together :’)

3. To My Star 2 - pain :) but the good kind, the one that makes you reflect on characters’ actions and emotions and even though it hurts it makes sense plot-wise and character-wise, I really like how Hwang Da Seul show stories (it’s not perfect but I still like it)

4. Triage - (;¬‿¬) "ᴵ ˡᶦᵏᵉ ᵗʰᶦˢ ˢʰᵒʷ ᵗʰᵉ ⁿᵒʳᵐᵃˡ ᵃᵐᵒᵘⁿᵗ" ᴵ ˢᵃᶦᵈ ʸᵒᵘ ᵏⁿᵒʷ, ˡᶦᵏᵉ ᵃ ˡᶦᵃʳ, I love plot driven shows and it also has paranormal element of a timeloop and mystery to solve and corruption to fight and every character is interesting and has their own story and importance but show manages to make following the plot not that hard and it’s so easy to like the main character (dr Tin my beloved) and it’s also not always heavy it’s well balanced and romance is ahhhh yea yea I could go on and on, everybody should just go and watch it

5. Plus & Minus - I still have to watch final ep but yea it was nice and wholesome, love me some childhood friends shenanigans and clownery and  FLG and ZZS are very likeable also I loved Yuki’s cat behavior ajfkgh

6. Star and Sky: Sky in Your Heart - I’ve started it but I still can’t finish second ep, I think I’ll just give up, not much more to add

7. Rak Diao - it is technically on hold but I WILL finish it, I liked the humor (even though laugh track hit me like ton of bricks) and I love dynamic between main characters like they are so petty good for them

Rewatching:

nothing, my sense of time is broken, my time managing skills are non-existent

Looking Forward to:

The Eclipse (supernatural and has First as the main character so how could I not be excited), Vice Versa, Moonlight Chicken, UMG (plots of all three look interesting and all have really strong cast), GAP (self-explanatory and I have high hopes after scoy) (it’s mostly GMM shows lol but I’ll probably watch other things along the way that ppl recommend)

You're wrong. They all died so tragically because they didn't know me. WOH, episode 24 part 3. Remembering his life in Tian Chuang and his behavior during his last meeting with Xiao Jiu, ZZS heads towards the exit and admires the plants in the courtyard. ZZS claims that he gave Jiu Xiao wine laced with Drunk Like a Dream, so he slept for five days and five nights, and when he woke up, it was all over. Xiao Jiu hated him so much that he left without saying goodbye. When ZZS saw him last, he was already lying in a coffin. He thought he was ZZS, he was imprisoned in a certain city and risked his life to free ZZS. He eventually died there. His beloved, after many difficulties, brought me his body. ZZS didn't know what connected this girl with Jiu Xiao, when he finally discovered it, he forced the girl to drink poison, from which she died immediately. ZZS states that if there is a parallel world, they probably gather there and curse him, the evil big brother. WKX replies that no one curses him, adds that they know ZZS. Distraught, with tears in his eyes, ZZS says that WKX is wrong, that his brother and his beloved died because they didn't recognize him. ZZS almost sobs when he says this. ZZS explains that Jiu Xiao had admired him since he was a child, and his master father Jiu Xiao treated ZZS like his own son, and tears rolled down his face as he said this. He explains that all members of the sect, both old and young, treated him as a family member and an older brother, respected and loved him. ZZS claims that it blinded them, they did not know that the real ZZS was a coward and a traitor. WKX looks at ZZS with despair, he is shocked that ZZS thinks so much of himself. WKX turns to ZZS with Ah Xu and asks him to sit down. ZZS doesn't feel well and sits on the bench. WKX pours tea seeing ZZS's condition and gives it to him. I decided to divide this most important part of the scene - what I called the ZZS confession - into two parts. ZZS knew that when he started telling WKX about his life as Tian Chuang's commander, he must have told him the most important things that made him leave the prince's service. This journey into the past is very painful. The hard shell surrounding the heart and soul of ZZS crumbled, leaving only a wounded, wounded young man who years ago trusted the wrong person and whose naivety led his people to needlessly lose their lives. ZZS is cruel to himself, calling himself a traitor and a coward. However, when he made the decision, he was only 18 years old, a young boy who did not know the world and the rules prevailing at the prince's court well. A young boy who believed in the honesty of his cousin the prince. However, years of service, each year confirmed to him how wrong he was, maybe he did not immediately accept the fact that he had been deceived. The turning point came when Jiu Xiao died. ZZS decided to punish himself and drive nails into himself, he wanted to die, although maybe he thought that after death he would go to hell for his bad deeds. However, before he dies, he wants to tell someone about his tragic fate and wrong choices. ZZS does not expect forgiveness, it only wants WKX to listen to it and free it from the burden of past sins. WKX is almost terrified by what ZZS says, he didn't think that this young boy he had known for years had also suffered great harm. In my opinion, by playing the role of ZZS in this scene, ZZH really empathized with what his character felt, he beautifully showed us the emotions that torment ZZS's soul. He did it in an extremely subtle way. I admire him for that.

first! and foremost! the relationship dynamics between zzs and wkx!!!! mmh have i ever said i love how priest writes romance? because i really do!!! two lonely people who only found each other by happenstance, trying to break away from the shackles of their past... i almost can't believe there are people who say zzs and wkx's romance feels rushed, like zzs is only putting up with wkx... like wow. zzs is very, from the beginning, his time is limited---3 years! he plans to muck around for 3 years, relishing his limited-time freedom and then dying peacefully somewhere, probably alone. but then he got caught up in a jianghu conspiracy and finds a family in the form of a flirtatious madman, his lackey in purple, and a crybaby boy, and finds that these "noisy people" make him want to live again. and wkx too! he was just out for revenge, and probably wouldn't have minded dying after, because he doesn't really have anything to live for, anyway---but then he meets zzs completely by chance, this suspicious figure who's somehow on the same wavelength as him, and at first i'm like, wow, how exactly did he decide that zzs is perfect for him? but then all of their offhand conversations, the responses zzs gives him, it all makes sense when his past is revealed. this is the person who understands him, and yet they meet when this person is about to die---just how painful is a fate like that? good thing it's a happy end novel lmao

It's Not A Priest Novel If There Are No Beloved Side Characters Whose Fates Are To Die: buy one get one free edition! i just wanted cao weining and gu xiang to be happy /crying but that little bit in the underworld really... i'm so happy that they met again, and that even meng po was sympathetic and gave them the red string so they could meet again in their next life...

mmh there's actually just, so much to unpack in tyk, like all priest novels lmao i love that even though it's a jianghu story about a conspiracy and sect politics, at its core, it's just zzs and wkx's story. zzs honestly really doesn't give a single rat's ass about whatever happens in the jianghu, he just gets embroiled in the conspiracy because he happened to save zcl. meanwhile, wkx is actually deeply involved in the conspiracy, but he's there to cast it all away, and if he just so happens to find someone whom he might be able to call his soulmate, then, well...that might be just his luck, isn't it?

zzs is such a delightfully unreliable narrator, he basically fell in love with wkx at first sight but then just! doesn't know what to do with Feelings! and is, y'know, also dying, so falling in love and having that love reciprocated probably isn't in his bucket list of "what to do before i die in 3 years". i loved the push and pull they had, and all the unsaid insecurities between the lines---zzs likes wkx, and it would've been fine if he was the only one in love, if wkx isn't serious about him, because he'll be happy to have wkx for the rest of his days, but then wkx would be lonely after he dies. but he also doesn't know what to do---love isn't exactly a priority when his main job had been machinating politics in the capital, and then being the head of an assassination group to stabilize the emperor's reign. he said it himself, he doesn't know how sincere wkx's feelings are, and he can't help but be on guard the entire time. but it says A Lot that he then wants to live, that he then dares to hope for survival because there will be someone by his side who wants him there, and zzs's "i love you" to wkx is basically "i'll spend the rest of my days with you until our hair grows white with age" and i think that's just, really sweet and romantic

and wkx too, oh man, it's really something else rereading the beginning of the story, rereading his early conversations with zzs. i said it above, but i really did feel like it was super sudden when he was all "this person understands me and i want to spend my life with him" but it all becomes clear at the end. wkx has always been lonely, having his family massacred and then having to survive among the very people who killed them, unable to trust anyone but the literal infant he raised like a little sister/daughter figure, not understanding societal conventions and seeming like a campy weirdo but it's probably precisely because he's had no healthy frame of reference of what being a "normal person is like". and then he meets zzs, this suspicious figure who's caught his attention, and then finds out that he has literally no interest in the jianghu conspiracy that literally everyone is crazy about, then casually, very casually probes him for his opinions on, y'know, very random things about morality and views in life. by some fortunate happenstance, this person's answers make him feel at ease that there's someone out there who isn't afraid of him, who reassures him that, yeah, y'know, sometimes people become bad because of circumstances, and not because they are bad from the beginning, that even bad people could deserve sympathy and love. and then it turns out that this person whom he's been very fortunate to meet just happens to be dying, and, well, it's good that he hasn't fallen in love completely, right? nope, not at all, he's very very much in love and already can't let zzs go.

that one priest interview where she gets asked "what will wkx do if zzs really dies, will he destroy the jianghu/court" and priest is like "nah, he'll just be completely lost and out of his mind as he deliriously lives, thinks of zzs, and then dies" and i'm like, wow, that's really quite intense, but i also feel like that says a lot about wkx as a person, that at the core he's not a violent person who's out for revenge---if zzs were to die, then... he would just, be really sad and lonely.

the more i read priest works the more i like them lmao it's... hm. i'm kind of surprised that the seeming international favorite modu is prob my least fav of the ones i've read so far (liuyao, modu, qiye, tianyake). not that it's bad, because it's really not! but the themes in the other ones just seem to resonate with me more, and i think that's absolutely lovely that she has such varied works that touch on various existential questions (?)

mmh i have to say i really love the title "tianyake"/"faraway wanderers", there's something so ephemerally beautiful about it and the specific imagery it evokes in my mind---this picture of two people walking along the edge where the sky meets a mirror-like surface that reflects the endless azure expanse and the white clouds floating idly, away from the vicissitudes of life and the shackles of the secular world...

top 5 favourite characters:

1. zhou zishu. i am so weak for zhang zhehan and his pretty face and his glorious side profile and all the little details that he put into this character. his slow smiles of wonderment as he’s falling in love. god. i’ll admit, it took me a while to like him as much as i liked wen kexing, but ultimately zzs is THE backbone of the show, it’s his story of finding love, regaining the desire to live, and finding meaning in having someone that you want to spend your life with. after reading qi ye i also appreciate zzs’s backstory more and i’m rooting for him!!! to find love and be free from the world of politics and corruption!!!

2. wen kexing. MY BOY HE WAS MY FAVE THE MOMENT HE STEPPED OUT ON SCREEN. ok ngl rewatching is kinda hard bc i keep noticing all the ways gong jun is a less experienced actor, but god when i first saw him. i thought he was SO beautiful it was such a perfect casting. i love his stupid pretentious flirting and his corny attitude and his fake fake smiles that only barely hide his feelings. the way he simply does not process emotions. what a ridiculous man. i want 20 of him

3. ye baiyi YOOOOOOO INSTANT CLASSIC. BEST CHARACTER EVER WRITTEN FOR TELEVISION. seriously though i am obsessed with this horrible little man??? the important thing to understand, ye baiyi in the novel is an 80 year old man stuck in a 20 year old body. that’s funny on its own, but ye baiyi in the show is a 20 year old guy who has lived for 80 years. imaging being gay and in your twenties forever. fuck. i too would be petty, exhausted, constantly pissed, and constantly roasting the shit out of baby gays. he’s just so funny oh my god. what a legend

4. gu xiang. my girlbossssssss i am very partial to the colour purple and so she gets points for that. also i love her outfits. i love that zhou ye added so much more dimension to ah xiang in her portrayal. gu xiang is someone who grew up around trauma and violence, yet she chooses to be good and kind and optimistic in her own way. i love the sibling/master dynamic with wkx, her relationships with the other members of ghost valley, her entire romance with cao weining. god that romance—the awful vulnerability of that scene when he saw her kill the beggar (who turned out to be an assassin). the fear of showing someone what you had to become to survive. you’re not proud of it, but you’re not the least bit ashamed, and yet it’s terrifying that they could reject you for it. god. god. god. they. her. ahuggh

5. gao xiaolian. maybe a surprising one but this girl just stuck in my head so much. this show really did so well with its women??? gao xiaolian initially exemplifies a sort of “ideal” weak, pure, feminine stereotype, a first in contrast to the many dangerous and colourful women of ghost valley and the scorpions. and yet her strength stands out immediately — her care for her father, her sense of duty, her no-nonsense approach to things. she’s remarkably clearheaded, and i love that she chose mercy over revenge in the end; it’s not necessarily what the show agrees is right, but because it’s her stance. and she’s sticking to it.

honorarable mentions: shen shen, xie’er, chengling, jby and wu xi because i’m BIASED, also helian yi deserved better <3

top 3 scenes:

1. wenzhou saying each other’s names three times — will anything ever match this moment. i still get chills thinking about that scene holy shit. i watch it over and over it haunts my dreams how could they even come up with this scene let alone film it and show it to the world. something shl drives home is the simplicity of real happiness (“only when i met you did i discover what a simple thing it is to be happy” screaming crying choking) and this scene says it all. “to be able to sit here, in the daylight. have someone call my name like that. that would be good.” and zzh’s line delivery. drives me nuts

2. the confrontation with ye baiyi. another iconic scene for the ages. the way they had the exact same plan because they’re zhiji. the way wen kexing runs because he’s feeling too much and he’s scared. this scene is zhou zishu grabbing him by the shoulders and saying—it doesn’t matter to me. it doesn’t matter. i knew all along and i loved you anyway. i love you and i am with you; your fate will be my fate now. my favourite thing about the scene has to be after the confrontation, when the tension is gone. and they go right back to bickering and teasing each other. zhou zishus exasperated “what do you think i was gonna do”. the bitching and complaining. yeah i’d die with u. but i’m gonna remind u that you’re a lotta work. chefs kiss perfection

3. gu xiang going apeshit after cao weinings death. zhou ye’s florence pugh Acting moment. god. so good. holy shit. u simply don’t get that in historical dramas especially from female characters. jesus fucking christ holy shit. i was sobbing. the grief and shock and rage and outrage; like, she loved cao weining and cao weining was such a good boy, but it just boils down to. how could they do that??? how could they just do that???? they just came in and destroyed something that was good, that was their plan all along and that’s it and his life is just over and now there’s just nothing???? and gu xiang just rages and rages and it’s about revenge but it’s barely even about that, she doesn’t even get to make the murderer pay, it’s just lashing out against the absolute senseless violence that just happened here. catharsis, my literature teacher might say. oh god i am tearing up

honourable mention: that scene where wen kexing goes apeshit and monologues over someone’s grave. i cannot for the life of me remember when that happened but i remember watching that when the episodes were coming out and being THRILLED bc that kind of scene has to be a theatre kid’s DREAM to perform. anyway i need to rewatch shl

columbo <3 - the sheer respect I have for this man, damn. One of the smartest characters ever, but not haughty and full of it like some other detectives in fiction. He’s kind, pleasant, and very easily underestimated, which plays to his advantage in investigations. Such a keen eye for details and reading people. Idk I could just go on ang on, I love him

amelie (movie amelie) - i’m just fond of this movie and its music, comptine d’un autre ete has been my favourite comfort piece to play on the piano for years. As for amelie herself I enjoyed her quirkiness and openness, how true she is to herself and to everyone around, how she enjoys life in such simple ways and shapes the reality around herself into something comforting

a-qing (mdzs) - very dangerous despite her frail appearance. Smart af, cunning and quick to adapt, turns her weaknesses into weapons, and her tenacity is incredible, especially when she’s facing something she can’t win with but can still hinder it significantly. She could’ve achieved so much...

The way he grew across the seasons, how cunning and strong and confident he became, the relatable christian guilt, the queerness, the need to protect his found family, on top of that he’s an absolute madman and possibly a sociopath, the LAYERS of this character. I love him

nie huaisang (mdzs) - to avoid spoilers let’s just say he shares some traits of other characters I listed. Those who read the novel/watched the drama know ;) fatal journey spin-off my beloved

zhou zishu (tyk), liu qingge (svsss) - the relatable inability to express feelings and the initial distrust but vulnerability once bonded, stubbornness, strong badasses, eyeroll™, for zzs also the bastard and gremlin inside of him

rorschach (watchmen) - I respect his tenacity and sticking to his ideals, I’m also weak for detective characters so yeah

baek (dr. frost) - tbh i haven’t read the comic in years and there wasn’t a lot of chapters back then so not much was known about him, but a lot of tropes I liked, the smarts, the calm but mysterious energy, kinda a detective vibe but in a psychological way (he’s a psychologist). I gotta go back to that webtoon
