"Papa, can we go to Ba Sing Se?"
"Of course, my waterlily. Then you and mommy will be the prettiest girls there."
"Just like from the song!"
~~~~
Merry Christmas, everyone! ❤ just going to post here an animatic I made earlier this year for the zutara month.
I like to think that this is the only song Zuko memorize back when Iroh constantly sings this during his banishment in his younger days. This song used to annoy him so much, but this changes years later when his daughter asked him to sing a lullaby for her.
He likes to point out that the girls who are meant in the lyrics are the girls he loves the most, and that's Katara and their little daughter, Kya 🥺
A Moment Of Vulnerability
Zutara Month | Day 19 : Hurt / Comfort
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did angst?? When zutara month is almost over??? Who is she??
I'm sorry my fellow Zutarians for posting my entry so late into the month (may is actually just two days away). BUT BETTER LATE THAN NO ENTRY. Wait. That's not how the saying goes. I've been busy with school since we just had our finals and I had other issues as well like that scum of the earth called art block.
BUT I DID IT. I DID A ZUTARA COMIC I HOPE YOU'RE PROUD OF ME >:D
And I know April 19 was days ago. Shut up. I had an idea for that day and I shALL FULFILL IT. I'm sorry for being so aggressive again. That one Noragami OVA gave me this idea (I ship yatori tho-) and I forced myself to finish it in time ¦D
@pineapple-frenzy -san!! PLS NOTICE ME I'M A FAN OF YOURS 😭 @zutaramonth PLS FORGIVE MY SINS. CLEANSE ME WITH ZUTARA FLUFF.
ZKMonth 21 Day 4 - Bending Practice
“I recognize that move!”
Katara dropped the water she was bending and turned towards the voice that had interrupted her.
Zuko was standing on the beach a few yards away, looking a bit sheepish for having interrupted her. She tilted her head at him and he came closer.
“I used that move,” he clarified. “Against Azula’s Dai Li agents, back in Ba Sing Se.”
“You used that move? A waterbending move?”
“With fire, yeah.”
She couldn’t help staring at him in disbelief.
“My uncle told me that all the elements are connected,” Zuko said, talking quickly. “He came up with lightning redirection by watching waterbenders, so when Sokka said you were here practicing by yourself I thought I might pick something up from you so I came to watch. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have--”
“Show me.”
“What?”
“Show me what you did!”
Taking a deep breath, Zuko moved through the form she had just done, executing the same move but with fire instead of water.
“Can you do this?” she asked.
She performed a simple water whip slowly so he could see what she was doing.
“That’s not dissimilar to a firebending form we already do,” Zuko said, “but here.”
He copied her exactly, whipping the air with a snap of fire.
“Show me the one firebenders do!” Katara said, almost bouncing.
Zuko raised an eyebrow but complied. Katara watched carefully, trying to memorize what he was doing. When he finished she gave it a shot, and when it worked, she shrieked.
“Zuko! This is amazing!”
His face flushed.
“Show me something else!”
They spent the rest of the afternoon exchanging bending forms, gradually getting more complicated until they were sparring with the octopus form.
“I never imagined this was possible,” Katara said as she raised her hand to call them to a halt and they dropped their octopi. “Thank you so much for interrupting me earlier!”
“You’re welcome--”
She surprised him by throwing her arms around his neck.
“Even if I can’t revive the traditional Southern Waterbender style,” she whispered into his shoulder, “my bending isn’t just Northern. It’s mine, and I can share it. Thank you so much, Zuko. Really.”
Zuko’s arms wrapped around her waist and he pulled her close.
“You’re welcome. Really.”
Zutara Month Day 19: Hurt/Comfort...
Tumblr media
I took the stars from my eyes, and then I made a map...And knew that somehow I could find my way back...Then I heard your heart beating...you were in the darkness too...So I stayed in the darkness with you
- Cosmic Love, Florence and the Machine
I drew this in the hospital, sick and on too much drugs and not enough sleep, using techniques I’ve never used before, a kindle that kept glitching and a stylus pen from my chriprocator that was literally disintegrating. Understandably, making it took - and I am not joking - a solid 50+ hours. But look at it! It’s tender af!
Zutara Month 2021 - Day 20: Longing
postcards (ficlet under the cut)
Tumblr media
Zuko was always doomed to be left behind after the war. It was inevitable - all his friends had things to do, and their responsibilities were bound to take them far away from the Fire Nation.
But he hoped the separation wouldn’t last too long. They’d visit, they’d come back. Of course, he didn’t have much to go off of, but he was pretty sure that’s what friends were supposed to do.
Even if no one else did, she would come back. Certainly. You don’t go through the harrowing experience of saving each other’s lives just to drift apart in the end.
Right?
@zutaramonth
in case the writing in the image is illegible, I'll include that here too:
[Z] Remember the last time we were here together? You had quite the blast. Rebuilding it and thinking of you.
[K] Remember the last time we were here together? Who knew under all that armor and grandmother-grabbing business there was a soft heart? Rebuilding it. Because of you. But thinking of you fondly.
[Z] Back at the Jasmine Dragon. Uncle misses you.
[K] Back in the air. Appa misses you.
[Z] Saw something pretty today. I miss you.
[Z] Katara? Will you visit?
I’ll leave it a bit open-ended! Did the postcards stop because they drifted apart or because the distance between them disappeared? Were the postcards ever even sent to one another? whatever floats your boat :)
@zutaramonth Day 6: From Other’s POV
(Aka B writes a crack fic, or ‘The REAL Ember Island Playwright Tells All’.)
From the moment I had heard of the Avatar’s return I had known there was a story to be found there, but the story I had set out to write had not been the story that I returned home with.
A forbidden romance! Fire and water, sun and moon, opposites attract, enemies to lovers! A journey of redemption! A story of love! How could I not ship it?
I had spent the better part of a year on the heels of the Avatar. My travels had taken me from the South Pole to the North, from Ba Sing Se to here.
I breathed in the familiar smells of the Ember Island Playhouse --that odd combination of burning dust under hot theatre lights and salt in the air from the nearby ocean. It was the smell of home.
My whole life I’d eagerly awaited this moment. Opening night. Of my play. My play! Now that it was finally here my nerves had caught up with me and my heart pounded frantically in my chest as I pushed aside the heavy fabric of curtains to duck backstage.
“The house is opening in ten,” I said to the first person I saw, old man Ren, checking the positioning of props. He had been handling all the technical effects for the Playhouse for as long as I could remember.
For as long as I could remember Ren had also been a man of few words, perhaps a habit born out of a lifetime spent as a backstage crew member. He nodded in reply and continued arranging items on the prop table.
I was probably being a nuisance, but I couldn’t help it. I was the youngest ever to have my work produced on this stage --playwright Shiori had a nice ring to it.
Of course, much to my dismay things had been out of my hands after the first few rehearsals. Pu-On Tim, the director of the Ember Island Players, had insisted my constant input was only slowing things down. ‘Let me handle the story from here. Trust us.’
From the moment I had heard of the Avatar’s return I had known there was a story to be found there, but the story I had set out to write had not been the story that I returned home with.
A forbidden romance! Fire and water, sun and moon, opposites attract, enemies to lovers! A journey of redemption! A story of love! How could I not ship it?
The pirates had told me the banished Fire Nation Prince had worn the waterbender’s necklace around his wrist like a talisman.
Aunt Wu the Fortune Teller had confessed to me that the girl from the Southern Water Tribe was destined to have a ‘great romance’ and marry a ‘powerful bender’. ‘The Avatar asked about his fortune too, I think he hoped that I would tell him he was fated to be with the girl, but I could tell he was not the one I had sensed in her future.’
The bounty hunter, June, had shrugged when I asked about the Avatar, but remembered Prince Zuko with a laugh, ‘He wanted help finding his girlfriend.’
In the South Pole an old man had a tale for me that he had received directly from Katara herself, of the night of the siege. She had laughed telling him of her battle against the firebender on the ice, and laughed even harder when she repeated the prince’s melodramatic line, ‘You rise with the moon, I rise with the sun!’ I knew I’d be borrowing that line for my play.
By that time I had begun to feel like I was neglecting my duties as a storyteller. I had become distracted, paying more attention to Zuko and Katara than the Avatar himself, so I had endeavoured to refocus...
In Ba Sing Se I paid a Dai Li agent for information about what had happened when Princess Azula arrived. They had told me all about a strange energy during the battle in the crystal catacombs, about the heartbroken expression that had crossed Katara’s face when Zuko joined his sister in battle.
I had thought that might just be the end of the story, how silly I had been, imagining something between two people I had never met, nevermind the rumors that flew into the city that the Avatar was now dead.
I had returned home. Weeks had gone by. And then came the news, the Avatar was alive, Prince Zuko had betrayed his father and left.
Then a source sent word to me that a waterbender had attacked the retired Fire Nation Commander Yon Rha. I had paid a quick visit to the shell shocked man, and his story seemed to only back up my theory further that there was something between Prince Zuko and Katara. ‘She was accompanied by a boy with a scar on his face. She… I thought she was going to kill me, but she didn’t. I’ll never forget her face, like a spirit of death.’
I couldn’t have cared less about Yon Rha’s trauma (seemed like he deserved it if you ask me), but I did began to dream again of a tale of forgiveness and hope and love. Zuko was with her on that mission. Only Zuko...
The words had tumbled out of me in a matter of days, like I was possessed. It felt right, important, for a nation like mine, to receive a story such as that.
Tonight, it would.
I made my way to my seat and held my breath as the curtains rose.
When intermission came it was all I could do not to scream. What had they done? My beautiful story! It was a joke! They had taken all the emotion I had so carefully crafted, the tenderness, the trust, all the delicate, wonderful things and thrown it all away!
I sat for some time, considering all the ways in which I might get my revenge on Pu-on Tim who surely was responsible for this disaster. When a program drifted to the floor in front of me I scooped it up, only to find that my name was nowhere to be found on it. They ruined it -AND they stole it!
I stood and began to march out of the playhouse, wishing it would burn to the ground behind me.
And that was when I saw them.
Instinctively, I recognized them. Characters in my mind brought to life… I’m sorry, I wanted to tell them. I’m sorry for this injustice. This isn’t how I wanted your story told. It’s not how it should be told...
That would have been insane though, so instead I watched for a moment as Katara turned her gaze to the ocean before her, sighing, seeming frustrated.
Zuko leaned against the railing beside her. “Want to talk about it?” he asked.
“Not really,” Katara replied.
His arm brushed hers and they both turned to each other. It felt suddenly as though they were in a world entirely different from my own...
I did not return to watch the rest of the play that night. It was clear it was not mine anymore anyways, but a few weeks later I attended the coronation ceremony of the new Fire Lord Zuko.
I saw Katara standing beside him, proud, excited, happy. There was something different between them, stronger than even before. I had no idea who I could interview to back that idea up, but I didn’t need more evidence anyways.
I just knew.
Zuko and Katara were meant to be, always had been, and always would be.
A Piece of You - Zutara Month 2021
My contribution (possibly my only contribution) for Zutara Month 2021. I hope you enjoy!
She sighs. A thick fog spouts from her lips, her breath like fire in the frigid southern air. She turns an envelope in her hands, the textured parchment is rough against her fingertips. She's perched on the edge of the tallest ice shelf in the south pole, watching the sunset, waiting for the stars to come out. His constellation would finally be visible tonight, and of all nights.
Her eyes wander down to the envelope, her fingers still absent mindedly skimming the front that bares her name in coal black ink. It's sealed with crimson wax, imprinted with the shape of two dragons intertwined and breathing fire. She closes her eyes, as if willing her heart to slow its furious rhythm. She dreams, for only a moment, of dropping the letter from the precipice she sits on and watching the water beneath consume it until there is nothing left but shreds of words she'll never read. But she could never do it.
She hooks her fingernail underneath the fire breathing dragons and pops the seal in one swift motion. The letter inside feels heavier in her hands and they shake as she unfolds it slowly in front of her.
Katara,
I hope that this letter finds you in good health and in higher spirits, though I'm not quite certain how to proceed beyond this pleasantry. Truthfully, I've been sitting at my desk for the last five hours, discarded at least a dozen drafts of this letter, and talked myself out of writing it at all a time or two. If I were a decent man, or a better Fire Lord, I'd inquire as to the current condition of the relationship between the Northern and Southern Water tribes, as I've been told it's been rather hostile as of late. I would recount to you with much excitement the progress that Aang and I have made in the planning and establishing of Republic City, though I can't imagine he wouldn't have already told you. And if I were so bold, or perhaps professional (in the eyes of my advisors), I would extend an invitation to you to return to Calderra City to assist me with matters concerning your nation. But I am afraid I am neither a decent man, nor a proper Fire Lord. Because none of those questions are at the forefront of my mind when it comes to you now. Katara, if I were a reckless man, I would spend my only correspondence with you rambling off the dates of every sleepless night I've had since I last saw you. I would tell you of the countless times that Uncle caught me preparing to come after you, and the frustration that burned in me when he reminded me of my duties to my people. I would share with you the anger and stress that comes with the responsibility of carrying the traditions of my culture on my back while attempting to keep up with a changing world. I know you would understand. I often find myself standing at the edge of the city, late at night, watching ships come and go in the Harbour. And I must confess, that I wish every single one were carrying you back to me. I long to spend another evening with you beside the pond in the gardens, feeding the turtleducks. I'd give anything to have you stand up and speak against me in my own counsel meetings again. I dream of hopping over the palace walls and sneaking into that seedy tavern in the market district with you and drinking Fire whiskey until we pass out. And I want nothing more than to jump on the first ship to the South Pole tomorrow. But you and I both know why that can't happen. Had I known, on the day of the comet, what would transpire afterward, I don't know that I wouldn't have selfishly declined the throne. Perhaps I would've begged Uncle to reconsider, or I might have pushed for elected leaders, or perhaps, I wouldn't have had the heart or mind to do anything differently. My feelings for you have been no secret. I may not have said as much, but I'd like to think I've told you with every action I've taken since you saved my life, maybe even before then. I'd like to think you've known since the second I dived for that bolt of lightning. I've been in love with you, Katara, for longer than I can begin to explain. I've been in agony since the day you left. And I know that if this letter does find you, that I can't persuade you to come back. I can't conjure feelings in you that don't exist. I don't expect you to ever give me a rhyme or a reason to what you did. I just wanted you to know how I feel. I wanted you to know that I love you. I wanted you to know that when you read the news of the Fire Nation Royal Wedding next week, that my heart belongs to no one else but you. We've both made sacrifices for our people, for the world, and I think now we've both made the same one. Congratulations on your marriage, Master Katara. I hold nothing for you and Aang but hopes of health, of happiness, of success in all that you do and all that you are. But I leave you now, with a hope that you will carry with you a piece of me, as I will always carry a piece of you.
Forever Yours,
Zuko
The freezing wind stings her cheeks, freshly painted with tears, as she clutches the letter close to her heart. Her labored sobs are lost on the desolate, frozen tundra around her. When she closes her eyes she sees Calderra City fading away into the early morning light, and she sees a shadow watching her from the edge of the volcano. She opens her eyes to gaze across the vast ocean, feeling him out there despite their distance. Her hand falls to cradle her slightly swollen stomach, the confession falling as no more than a whisper from her delicate mouth,
"A piece of you"
Cherry Blossoms-Day 17
Hi, I decided to jump in on Zutara Month for just today, maybe another day.
I mostly decided because mi mamita loved Cherry Blossom trees and I wanted to write this for her.
Te quiero mucho, Mami.
You can also read my fic here on my FF.net.
As always, happy reading!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Afar, a dance of deep oranges and pinks melt in the sky as the sun descends into the depths of the azure sea.  A soft breeze weaved it way through the trees, the branches dancing softly to the invisible force.
A young woman lays beneath a large Cherry Blossoms tree, enjoying nature take its course, waiting for the moment day meets night.
The soft powdered petals drift around the young Waterbender, kissing her cheeks as they pass her to greet the ground.
Autumn is not far off, ready to greet the Fire Nation with renewed life.  Whisking away the intense heat of Summer and welcoming the calm coolness Autumn brings.
Far off in the distance, a young Fire Lord watches the Waterbender appreciating her surroundings.
He appreciates her beauty out shining all the Fire lilies and all the Cherry Blossoms.
Her traditional blue dress refuses to mold into the bright reds surrounding her.  Begging her to fold and become the same.  He shakes his head from the thought, knowing well enough she is not meant to blend in, but stand out.
Slowly, he makes his way across the garden, careful not to disturb the peace Katara has created for herself.
The quiet quacks of the turtleducks can only be heard if you listen close enough, knowing they too soon will retire for the night.
Passing the pond, Zuko feels the heat of the sun rest on his back, pushing him towards the sea of petals.
The soft sound of grass crunching brings Katara from her daydream.  She sneaks a glance to her left noticing Zuko approaching.  She smiles to herself, her eyes fluttering shut and embracing the last few rays of the day.  The foot steps grow nearer, but she pretends not to hear them.  Granting the Fire Lord this one moment to catch her without warning.
Like he used to.
But that’s was a year ago, running from one another to prevent the inevitable.
And now living in a time of peace and harmony.
The place where the sky shifts from dark to light.  Where the moon and sun coexist at the same time.
“Katara.”
She hums, her heart quickens hearing her name come from his lips.  The husky way he says her name is her favorite sound.
“Zuko.”
He smirks, knowing she heard him coming but giving him this one moment.  He settles down next to her.  Feeling the plush grass against his back, the coolness calming his heated body.
His shoulder brushes hers, creating the sensation he can only describe as lightening.
And he knows that sensation all too well.
They lay there in silence for a moment, listening to the sounds of the night seeping its way through the garden.
Katara opens her eyes to see her body covered in small petals.  She pinches it between her fingers, looking at the delicacy and the detail of the single petal.
“What are these?” she gently places the petal in Zuko's hand.  He closes his hand around her, slowly lacing their fingers together before turning his head to look at her fully.
“Cherry Blossoms.”
She furrows her brows, not quite sure what they are.  Before she asks, Zuko sits up, pulling her with him.  He rests himself against the base of the tree, feeling the bark rough against his back.
Katara follows him, sitting between his legs, letting her back rest against his chest.  She instantly relaxes when his arms come up to wrap around her, chasing away the early night chill that is slowly seeping its way across the garden.
“My mother planted these Cherry Blossoms as a symbol.”  Zuko plucks a Blossoms from a low hanging branch and cups it between his and Katara's hands.  “She always told me that life is too short not to cherish beautiful things...”  Zuko rests his cheek against Katara's head, his lips gently grazing the side of her ear.  “…and if there is something beautiful you see…”  Katara feels herself blush.  “…make sure to love it and cherish the time you have with it.”
Looking up at Zuko's deep amber eyes, all she could see is love.  And she knew he could see the same love in her artic blue eyes.
zutara month day 5: soulmate marks
Tumblr media
crossroads of destiny but make it soulmate au
based this piece from a soulmate marks prompt ‘where you get flower tattoos wherever your soulmate receives a scar’
i was set on making a piece for day 5 with that prompt but i never really had an idea of what to draw. this was originally a comic set in book 1 during book 1 where zuko sees the burns on katara’s hands and they later deny that they’re each other’s soulmates. i had an entire dialogue set up for the 2 panel comic but i later realized that i cannot(TM) draw book 1 zuko.
adding the dialogue here cause I didn’t want it to go to waste!
-zuko and iroh on zuko’s ship panel-
“she has the tattoos around her left eye, uncle. and i have the tattoos on my hands.”
“prince zuko, isnt that a good thing? not everyone gets to meet their match.”
“no.”
“why not?”
“because were supposed to be enemies.”
-katara and sokka on appa’s saddle panel-
“katara we’re at war with the FIRE NATION. Pretty sure ponytail isnt the only one whose face got burned.”
“but his hands... i saw them...”
“i dont know but you mist have done something bad in your past life for the spirits to pair you with a firebender. the fire prince nonetheless.”
“we cant. we’re supposed to be enemies.”
ZKMonth 21 Day 3 - Cuddling for Warmth
Zuko took the now-shivering Katara to the room that had once been his, not knowing anywhere else to take her. A Fire Sage had suggested a guest room, but Zuko had ignored him. Once he was crowned he would probably regret that, but right now he didn’t care.
Katara had taken lightning trying to help him and he hadn’t gotten to her in time.
He’d managed to pull the lightning out of her and get her to water so she could heal herself, but once she’d finished she’d complained of the cold.
He laid her out on the bed after he pulled back the covers with one hand. Once she was settled, he pulled the blankets over her and was about to step away to find more when she grasped his hand.
“Zuko,” she breathed. “You’re the warmest thing here.”
He felt the heat rise to his face, but there wasn’t time to be embarrassed. She was freezing and he could help her.
He pulled off his boots and climbed into the bed next to her, under the blankets she shakily held up for him. Once he was in place, she snuggled into him, laying her head on his chest. He put his arm around her and started doing his breathing exercises, raising his body temperature.
The warmer he made himself the closer she snuggled, eventually twining their legs together beneath the blankets.
When a passing thought made him chuckle, she opened her eyes and looked at him.
“What’s so funny?”
“I just think it’s interesting you’re snuggling me so closely when you just had pure heat and energy coursing through you.”
She shook her head.
“That’s different,” she mumbled against his tunic. “You’re a...nice warmth. A familiar warmth.”
He thought back to after they’d encountered Yon Rah, when Katara had sobbed in his arms.
“I’m glad,” he said, pressing his lips against her hair.
“Thank you for saving me,” she murmured.
“You already said that.”
“I don’t care. I’ll thank you every day if you’ll let me.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m glad I’m alive,” she said. “And I’m glad you were the one who saved me. How’d you do it?”
“I don’t know,” he admitted. “I kind of made up the technique as I went along.”
A sound came from low in Katara’s throat, but before he could ask she spoke.
“I can’t believe you made up a whole new firebending technique to save my life.”
“I would do anything to save your life.”
She hummed contentedly.
“I would have taken it, you know,” he said. “The lightning. I just wasn’t fast enough.”
“And if you had, I would have saved you,” she said simply.
Now she was the one making him warm.
Zutara Month 2021 - Day 7: Dusk and Dawn
shortest piece I've ever written underneath the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She glares at the moon, wondering why it gave her the powers that led to her mother's death.
He glares at the sun, wondering why it had to choose a favorite between him and his sister.
---
When the Avatar falls out of the iceberg, Zuko thinks it is finally the end of a long, long day. A day that began with his banishment, but will end right now, as soon as he gets ahold of the airbender.
When the airbender falls out of the iceberg, Katara thinks it is finally the beginning of a new day. A new life, one where she isn't confined to blocks of ice, and a new era for the world.
But they've both forgotten about the twilight hours that come first.
---
At long last, when the sun sets on the age of war and the moon starts to illuminate the way forward, they stand side by side, hand in hand, as the sky turns purple for them.
@zutaramonth
p.s. idk how clear it is but in the first picture, they're separated by "bloodshed"
