Stolen Bending

If being banished wasn’t bad enough, losing his firebending right when the Avatar is finally within reach is enough to turn Zuko’s world upside-down. Katara isn’t any happier when her journey toward the North Pole is interrupted by the disappearance of her waterbending. Burdened by one another’s elements, Zuko and Katara have to work together to find a way to set things right.

My first piece for @zkbigbang ! I had a chance to participate this year event and I'm really happy I did! Working with my team was wonderful and I'm really thankful for this experience 💜

Kiyi is the only addition from the comics that I'm willing to acknowledge, however, I will happily ignore everything else abt her story. Instead she is Ozai's daughter and protecting her was what kept Ursa in hiding, at least until a year after the war when Zuko and Katara show up for The Southern Raiders pt 2: Electric Boogaloo.

#zuko's redesign stems from my headcanon that after trying to be like his predecessors for a hot minute #he ultimately realises that another Sozin/Azulon/Ozai is not the answer so he kinda de-militarises his royal outfits to represent that #(also all i can think abt when i see comic zuko is him going sideways to get through doorways) #so bye bye big military-style shoulderpads and hello soft flowing robes #also no more bangs because what were they thinking #i have a fic idea where zutara find Ursa and Kiyi with prisoner Azula's help only for a landslide to seperate them right after reuniting #zk and Ursa on one side and Azula and Kiyi on the other #so Azula is faced with a LOT #does she escape? does she take revenge on Ursa by leaving Kiyi defenseless? #she has a whole crisis but ultimately protects Kiyi and returns her to Ursa even though it sacrifices her only chance at freedom #this action doesn't redeem her or spare her the consequences of her past actions but it does start her on that journey #zuko #kiyi #my posts #atla #atla fanart #my art #gonna add zutara cos this does allude to a zutara au i have in mind even though it isn't strictly speaking abt zk themselves #zutara

Chapter Five: Zuko contemplates his life and relationship with Katara just before a fun day out takes a turn for the grim. An unexpected confrontation with a person best forgotten forms a catalyst for the conversation that's been brewing between Katara and Zuko.

Chapter Six: Katara and Zuko talk. Finally.

Another huge thanks to @marijayne-writing for beta reading and wrangling me, to @logicalalo for the lovely chapter 2 art and @risemaclay for the artwork that finds its home in chapter six.

We Saw a Spark is a modern, no-bending Zutara AU in which Katara is a paramedic and Zuko is a firefighter. Slowburn of two broken people learning to support each other as they heal. Please head the tags and individual chapter warnings.

Anon, I appreciate the heads up & the nice sentiment! In the future though, I’d prefer not to know about how people react to my posts unless they’re being very nice. I don’t want to engage with negativity & smoothbrain takes, but I am VERY easily tempted lmao. My background in competitive debate / academia / leftist politics means I’m extremely argumentative, but I know nothing good comes out of Internet arguments so I need help ignoring antis. 

Anyway it’s helpful for me to remember that I’m in the Zutara fandom because I love to see people inspiring each other to create things. I’ve read so many wonderful metas, feasted my eyes on incredible fan art and edits, laughed at funny posts, foamed at the mouth over epic fics, and generally have been in awe of what this fandom has produced over the years. I mean…we’ve had colouring books! An EP! Animatics where Dante Basco himself lent his voice! This fandom has been around since before I was allowed to use the family computer and it’s so cool to me that it’s still thriving. By contrast, reacting snarkily to content that other people create is like…the opposite of generative and does nothing to better a community — which is why I fundamentally don’t care for antis and don’t want them to be part of my fandom experience. Anyone can make their half-baked opinion known online, but it takes spirit and dedication to create things you like for your ship. Anyway here’s a reminder that ZK Big Bang signups are still open for one more week! I still haven’t decided which role I want to play in this event but I encourage everyone to sign up!

Forest of Lights

The Avatar has been missing for a century, and the spirits are getting bold. One night, Katara watches the southern lights fall and gets trapped in the rapidly growing ice forest. On his ship, Prince Zuko sees those same lights and decides to investigate.

Soon, they run into each other in the Forest of Lights. By now, Katara has learnt that she needs to find the Avatar to save the world. And right now, the only way to do so in time is to team up with her biggest opponent – Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation.
