Gem AU Hierarchy Tier-List
Mine on the left. @barsikscorner  on the right (because his was just so hilarious)
Roles explained below if curious-
EDIT: I FORGOT TO PUT IN CHARMY’S INFORMATION LIKE A DUMMY SO NOW IT’S ALL THERE-
Black Doom (Black Diamond)- The diamonds obviously. The other three aren’t here since their icons weren’t in the thing. And Black Doom is the top shit black diamond lol
Knuckles, Shade and Tikal (Pyrope, Malaya Garnet and Spessartite) - Garnets. Basically commanders that are second in command to the Diamonds, lead armies or large groups of gems on colonies for their respective diamonds as Diamonds can’t be everywhere. Knuckles is the only one unaware of his role- at this point in time only 4 of them exist but this could change.
Bark (Bumblebee Jasper)- Was originally a working class tank gem but got moved up to a more elite role due to his rarity and his high amount of success. (and also due to the fact Knuckles/Pyrope was believed been destroyed before emerging from the planet so he was kinda a pseudo-replacement in a sense)
Vanilla (Petrified Wood)- An aristocratic like gem, seen as elegant and graceful and she as a very important duty. She is one of the gems charge of the production and creation of organic gemstones, serving as a mother like figure to them. (i.e. ambers, jets, other fossilised gemstones that can be found in the ground and plant like substances. she doesn’t do the water ones that goes to other roles)
Blaze (Sugilite)- A very rare gem who serves as a judge for legal cases, mostly for cases that the diamonds don’t feel the need to overlook or simply can’t due to their duties.
Silver (Moonstone)- A rare and sought out gem, serves as an oracle who uses his psychic powers of future vision to tell gems their future. There’s very few of them and are highly valued.
Wave (Phosphosiderite)- An extremely rare type of gem. Works as an elite Inventor/Scientist gem. Very prideful in her job and loves to be an overachiever to try and look better than the rest.
Espio (Charoite)- A slightly rare gem working gem. A Stealthy warrior gem that is made for specialised assignments, such as being hired by other elites to spy on gems in the darkness or to remain as hidden guards. Perfection is key for their job.
Sonic (Benitoite)- A very rare gem. They few of them that exist are entrusted to command fleets of airships. Sonic/Benitoite found his job to be unfortunately very dull, in fact he found a lot of the life of the elite class a boring existence.
Honey (Imperial Topaz)- While there is a massive amount of Topaz’s, she is considered very rare and precious for her kind and colouration. Her job is to the an announcer/reporter gem. She tries to make it more entertaining but frequently is told off and to treat it more like a job.
Shadow (Mahogany Obsidian)- A rarer variety of Obsidian. They’re usually made to be elite bodyguards and escorts to higher class gems. Shadow/Mahogany was assigned to many gems but for the longest was the escort of Maria/Sapphire whom he came to adore and care for a lot. (platonically of course)
Vector and Storm (Rainforest Jasper and Zebra Jasper)- Jaspers are made to be massive hulking tank gems. Vector/RJ is considered a rare (albeit in his case slightly defective) variation are among his batch, while Storm/ZJ is a very common variation of Jasper (who would also be marked defective due to an... incident-). Jaspers usually work in big teams and both of them even worked in a team with Bark/BBJ but they were eventually split up. Vector/Rj was assigned to be a personal guard for Vanilla/Petrified Wood, and Storm/ZJ was assigned to be a ‘guard’/’guinea pig’ for Wave/Phosphosiderite
Big (Auralite 23/Red Cap Amethyst)- An extremely rare gem that is named Auralite 23 due to their stone type being a massive mix of 23 components of different gems, and Big/Amethyst is the latest and only one to currently exist. Big/Amethyst was deemed defective due to not being the size he should be, Amethysts are quartz’s and should be smaller and more all-around fighter, while he’s the size of a hulking tank Jasper and almost bigger than regular ones. He was experimented on before being assigned to the other Jaspers to work as a Tank warrior.
Mighty (Fire Agate)- Agates are assigned drill sergeants/troop leaders, made to keep other warrior gems (quartz’s, jaspers, etc) in line and train them if necessary. Mighty/Fire Agate is deemed rare for his batch but was also deemed defective due to his pacifistic nature.
Tiara (Tigers Eye)- A Look-out/Scouting gem, made to look out and run ahead on the battle fields for enemies. They’re small but sturdy and fast. She’s not rare but still rather uncommon. She was chosen by Honey specifically to help her with assignments.
Rouge (Pearls)- A beautiful and uncommon gem type that are made to be entertainers, usually with singing and dance. They’re loved for their looks and their work but they’re not respected.
Ray (Lemon Jade)- Jades are plentiful and are made to be personal assistants, different colourations being assigned/made for high class gems that request one. Even the Diamonds have their own personal Jades. Ray/Lemon Jade is an uncommon variation.
Tails (Heliodor)- An uncommon type of middle-class working class gems. They’re made to be aircraft technicians, building, repairing and working in aircrafts, usually in massive fleets. Most Heliodors emerge with two sets of arms to aide in their duties, Tails/Heliodor was deemed a defect immediately after emerging due to having an odd pair of tails instead of the usual set of arms. He was kept from being shattered due to Sonic/Benitoite taking him under his wing and he was assigned to work for him in his fleet.
Jet (Malachite)- A slightly rare type of working class gems. Malachites are assigned to be piloting gems. Jet/Malachite was marked a defect due to his size but since pilots are needed he wasn’t shattered, he is strictly only assigned to pilot supply ship drops so other gems don’t have to see him.
Bean (Peridot)- Common working class gems. They work in construction, more so in architecture and creating buildings for other gems. They’re abilities aide them in work. Bean/Peridot was assigned to make personal living quarters for Bark/BBJ. He was chosen as the ‘messenger’ so to speak to Bark/BBJ, letting him know of plans and getting his input on what he wanted for his quarters. They bonded over time.
Marine (Sard)- Common working class gems. Small-sized and plentiful but sturdy gems that are given jobs that require physical labour. They frequently work with other gems like Carnelians and Onyx’s. They’re usually in small batches at a time and usually are made to squeeze into tight spaces for labour work.
Gadget (Carnelian)- A more uncommon working class gem type. Carnelians and gems similar to their type are huge and bulking much like Jaspers, made to do physical labour and lift extremely heavy parts for construction of large structures and machines (like injectors).
Amy (Thulite)- A common lower class working gem. Thulites are a type of maintenance worker, usually in floral decoration. Ordered to make the areas they’re assigned to clean and pleasing to the eye. They’re work was thankless however and they’re not deemed worthy of a lot of respect.
Charmy (Honey Calcite)- Extremely common low-class working gems. They’re assigned as resource hunters. Hunting down possible resources or items that could be used and using their specialised bubbling abilities to attain them. They’re seen as weak and easily replaceable so they’re not that valued.
Cream (Amber)- One of the gem types at the very bottom of the Gem-kind Hierarchy. Ambers are massively plentiful in numbers but are very weak and easily damaged, so they were made to be servant gems. Cream/Amber emerged late and is a defective Amber due to being twice as small as most Amber gems. She doesn’t know of her real role on homeworld and the others shield her from the truth for the sake of her innocence.
Nack (Hackmanite)- A very rare gem type. Their place in the hierarchy is strange as they technically don’t exist according to other gems and are a secret that only the Diamonds know about. They were made to Assassin/Hunting gems to handle the more rebellious group of gems. Nack/Hackmanite was a defect due to his size but due to their being so few was kept alive and giving limb modifiers to make his physical form appear taller.
Zero/Infinite (Black Opal)- Middle Class gems that are now very few and believed to be completely gone and outdated. Opals used to be fairly big in numbers, used for their holographic abilities, usually making hyper realistic holograms for demonstrations. That is until technology began to evolve and their gemstones were used as a powersource for a lot of that technology. A lot of the Opal gem types began to rebel to save themselves but it proved unsuccessful. Zero/Black Opal was particularly rare in his batch. He was apart of a small group of Opals whom he had a very sibling like bond with them, he was the only one to survive his batch while the others were seemingly shattered and their shards used to power this tech. So Opals are now an extremely rare find and if more happened to be found, they are to be shattered.
Others that aren’t here due to not having images on the tier list are Ix (Blue Diamond), Pachachamac (Red Diamond), Finitevus (Yellow Diamond), Maria (Sapphire), Julie-Su (Rhodolite), Scourge (Aventurine) and Matilda (Moss Agate),
If you got this far. WOW THANK YOU I LOVE YOU <3 <3 <3

[Image description:
A black and white ink drawing of a fantasy forest scene. A frog with long antennae coming from its eyestalks sits on a boulder. The boulder has banding, a stripe of non-banded rock cutting through it vertically, and some patches of lichen. At the base of the bouder are three large mushrooms. A tree grows to the left of the boulder and several small mushrooms sprout at its base. To the right of the boulder are four tall herbaceous plants with spikey leaves, one of with is broken and has fallen over. In the backgroun is a pound and a turtle basking on a rock, as well as three more trees.
Below the scene is text handwritten in a serif script that reads:
“A long-horn wood frog perched on throne
(a gneiss boulder with an intrusive dike)
ft. some mushrooms, 4 tall leafy herbs, this tree, & that turtle in the back
- Tethys, March 05, 2021”
End description]
The purpose of the iconic horns of the long-horn wood frog still evades scholars. Some argue they are sensory organs, others say they are display structures. These majestic amphibians are highly elusive, and only a handful have ever been kept in captivity.
(yes, “A long-horn wood frog perched on throne (a gneiss boulder with an intrusive dike) ft. some mushrooms, 4 tall leafy herbs, this tree, & that turtle in the back” is the full title of the piece. if i could make the drop cap part of the title i would)

alternate english orthographies and the post-alveolar problem
like many conlangers i've spent a lot of time fiddling around with alternate orthographies for english, not as a serious "this will be adopted" way, but as a fun puzzle to see if i can fit the latin alphabet to english's phonology. anyways, this post is gonna be a long ramble about silly new ways to write english, so here's a readmore
most of the consonants in english be written pretty unambiguously, intuitively, and aesthetically with the latin alphabet, but i have a problem with the way most people write the post-alveolars (ʃ, ʒ, tʃ, dʒ). in their own alternate english orthographies, David J. Peterson and jan Misali (and certainly others) use the most common system <sh, zh, ch, j>. this is intuitive and unambiguous, but i really dislike the affricates on an aesthetic level. i don't like how they're unrelated to each other or their matching fricatives. in search of a solution to this silly problem, i've come up with a series of silly solutions.
1) Logical Trigraphs
/ʃ, ʒ, tʃ, dʒ/ → <sh, zh, tsh, dzh>
this solution is perfectly symmetrical and balanced, but introduces some clunky trigraphs that aren't really necessary. i do like how it would fit in a romanization of a language that also had alveolar affricates.
2) J-Trigger
/ʃ, ʒ, tʃ, dʒ/ → <sj, zj, tj, dj>
this system might be my favorite. it's balanced and sticks to digraphs and has a consistent pattern with the alveolars! it's also 75% unintuitive to an english speaker looking at it for the first time. in this system, <j> essentially acts as a trigger to turn an alveolar into a post-alveolar. also this is a fun way to represent yod-coalescence, especially if you're also using <j> for /j/.
3) Faux-Italian 1.0
/k/ → <c> before non-front vowels, <ch> before front vowels /tʃ/ → <c> before front vowels, <ci> before non-front vowels /ʃ/ → before front vowels, <sci> before non-front vowels /g/ → <g> before non-front vowels, <gh> before front vowels /dʒ/ → <g> before front vowels, <gi> before non-front vowels /ʒ/ → <sg> before front vowels, <sgi> before non-front vowels or <zg> before front vowels, <zgi> before non-front vowels
this is definitely the silliest system so far, and would be easier to explain if tumblr had tables. it requires extra rules for the velar stops, uses <ch, gh> in very non-english ways, and has ambiguities about where an <i> after <c, g> is syllabic or not that would just need to be memorized. i also haven't fully decided if /ʒ/ should use <s> or <z>. what looks sillier, writing <genre> as <sgiaanra> or <zgiaanra>? (yes, i also have my own system for spelling vowels (as they appear in my form of general american) that i might explain later)
4) Faux-Italian 2.0: now with J's
/k/ → <c> /tʃ/ → <cj> /ʃ/ → <scj> /g/ → <g> /dʒ/ → <gj> /ʒ/ → <zgj> or <sgj>
here <c, g> are always "hard" by default, but become "soft" when followed by <j>, which solves the syllabic issue from Faux-Italian 1.0. i think this one is pretty fun on an aesthetic level (i especially like <scj>), but even though it's less complicated than Faux-Italian 1.0 it's not very useful. plus, i still haven't decided on how to write /ʒ/.
you could also have a mid-way point between this one and FI1.0 by having the velars be default soft before front vowels and hard before non-front vowels, then using <-h> to force hardness and <-j> to force softness.
5) Hačeks Galor
/ʃ, ʒ, tʃ, dʒ/ → <š, ž, č, ǧ> this is the only system on this list to use diacritics, mainly because i find it more fun to work within the limitations of 26 letters of the ISO basic Latin alphabet. i do like typing diacritics, however, so it gets a spot on this list.
6) Hačeks Semi-Galor
/ʃ, ʒ, tʃ, dʒ/ → <š, ž, tš, dž>
okay, i lied about the last one being the only system without diacritics. this is basically a one-to-one translation of the IPA system, nothing crazy going on here.
Examples
this is also using the rest of my alternate english orthography, which i may explain later if i feel like it.
Current English: Ship, join the genre choosing! IPA: /ʃɪp, dʒoɪ̯n ðə ʒɑnɹə tʃuziŋ/ Sensible System: Ship, join dha zhaanra chuuzing! Logical Trigraphs: Ship, dzhoin dha zhaanra tshuuzing! J-Trigger: Sjip, djoin dha zjaanra tjuuzing! Faux-Italian 1.0: Scip, gioin dha zgiaanra ciuuzing! Faux-Italian 1.5: Scip, gjoin dha zgjaanra cjuuzing! Faux-Italian 2.0: Scjip, gjoin dha zgjaanra cjuuzing! Hačeks Galor: Šip, ǧoin dha žaanra čuuzing! Hačeks Semi-Galor: Šip, džoin dha žaanra tšuuzing!
anyway, thanks for coming to my ted talk where i ramble about my personal aesthetic tastes for alternate english orthographies

Did some sketching for an alien jaw mechanism. I think the hardest thing about designing aliens is coming up with something plausible, but also not just copying something on earth. I'm not actually sure how it would have evolved, but I think it could work.
Fun lever fact, this mechanism is a class 1 lever, while your classic vertebrate jaw is a class 3

A black and white ink drawing of a toad sitting under a mushroom. The mushroom has a tall conical cap that leans to the left and is ridged. The gills are visible, and the stem is speckled. The toad has three mushrooms growing out of its back.
Next to the mushroom is text handwritten in a serif script that reads:
“Toads & Mushrooms”
Below is text in the same style that reads:
“name a more iconic pair”
End description]
evidence that toads and mushrooms are the same thing:
- wet
- squishy
- maybe tasty but probably poisonous
- loved by witches
- lives in the woods
also, don’t worry about the mushrooms on that frog, he’s just chillin

Is a Cool Jeep in Your Future? Best Used Jeeps is Guaranteed to Help You Decide.
Tumblr media
(From 1940 to 2010)
Why “Best Used Jeeps”?
FACT: Some used Wranglers are overpriced…but one model is still a better deal.
FACT: The later CJ models are often not as high quality as the Wrangler…yet the prices can be very similar.
FACT: One Jeep 4×4 model is an exceptional bargain…and it’s not the Wrangler or CJ.
FACT: The 4×4 Grand Cherokee (2005 on), 4×4 Liberty, 4×4 Patriot and 4×4 Compass all have one thing in common that the Wrangler does not have.
FACT: Finding expert honest and unbiased opinions regarding the various late models…and including the variety of older Jeeps…is becoming more and more difficult…until now.
FACT: You now have the opportunity to own a complete guide to Jeeps with your total satisfaction 100% guaranteed…all in an instant easy to read ebook.
Hello,
Tumblr media
…I’m Larry Morton.
I am a long time, genuine, unabashed, proud Jeep Lover!
I’ve owned, driven and professionally written about all kinds of Jeeps off the road and on.
I have made it a point to intensely study and learn all I can about Jeeps for many years now (and continue to do so).
Why do I do this?
I receive a lot of questions about all sorts of Jeeps through my website…and one day it occurred to me that most folks (possibly like you) just don’t have the time to spend comparing the many available Jeep models…or maybe just need a little guidance.
…and many people have simply asked for a clear handy guide that describes and evaluates most Jeep models over a 65+ year span.
It was also obvious to me that most people are desperately seeking honest, clear and direct information without a bunch of self-promoting hype. I know this for a fact…because I am also pleasantly surprised when I can get the substance without the filler.
While doing my research I found that I could easily spot the “best Jeeps”…and just as importantly…identify the “worst Jeeps” just by knowing what to look for.
I wrote Best Used Jeeps to give you everything you’ll need to have a better understanding of these wonderful historic vehicles.
If you have been wondering about owning a late model Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee XJ, CJ7 or any number of Jeeps from modern to classic…then this book is for you!
Also, each Jeep reviewed in the book has a clear photo to give you a visual idea of that model presented.
With this easy to read ebook you simply: Buy it! Read it! Own it!
Reader’s Testimonials:
Bill M. writes:
I strongly suggest that anyone interested in purchasing a used Jeep read “Best Used Jeeps” by Larry Morton before you even start looking and definitely before buying.
This book is for everyone that wants to get an idea of how much to pay, where to look, and what to look for when searching for a used Jeep of any model or design.
This book is an inexpensive way to save a lot of money and time on your used Jeep purchase.
Jenifer Livesey says:
For anyone who’s interested in Jeeps, this is the book to read! I’ve liked the styling of Jeeps for years, but this book gave me insight into many pros and cons that I wouldn’t have known about on my own.
I was amazed to find out how many models there were that I never knew existed. All of this information being in one book is like having a Jeep dealer in your pocket (only with unbiased honesty).
It was so nice to have all of this information in one place.
Andrew Savidge writes:
As a Jeep enthusiast and someone who has purchased several used Jeep models reviewed in this book, I feel Larry Morton has his finger on the pulse of the used Jeep vehicle market.
His insight into the off-road capabilities of each Jeep model as well as his ability to drill-down to find the true bargain used Jeep models has helped me rethink my next used Jeep vehicle purchase.
If you are a veteran Jeep owner such as myself, or someone considering their first used Jeep, after reading this book you will come away thinking, “why doesn’t everyone own a Jeep?”
Debra L. writes:
Just wanted to let you know how happy I was with your book…Since I was reading up on researching the Wranglers, I seem to lean toward a TJ Wrangler of choice. Seems like the vehicle I would like as a second truck. Thank you for your input. It really helped.
Josh B. writes:
Larry, I just love it [purchased his first Wrangler] thanks to you and your guidance. Your book was great and even better on the second read.
Henrik H. states:
I have bought your E-Book and enjoyed it immensely. Just the thing I needed.

2017 Jeep Concepts at the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab
Once again this spring the Red Rock 4-Wheelers are playing host to what will be the 51st annual Easter Jeep Safari on the rugged trails outside Moab in southeastern Utah. Although the event is open to all high-clearance low-range-equipped 4WD vehicles, Jeep is right there in the name. Once again the brand will have a big presence on the Safari’s trails and campsites. A total of seven concept vehicles will be on hand demonstrating the brand’s off-road cred and showing off its design chutzpah—as well as the designers’ ability to hide little Jeep icon “Easter eggs” in odd places.
More Easter Jeep Safari Concepts:

QuickSand
By far this year’s most outrageous off-roader is this vaguely Wrangler-Rubicon-based little hellion inspired by ’60s gasser hot rods of yore. Dig the 4-inch chopped roof and bobbed tail, the Moon tank in front (which here houses a Warn winch), the fender-well headers with trumpet cutouts (exhaust can be routed through a conventional muffler), the custom Halibrand knockoff look-alike wheels wrapped in 32-inch front and 37-inch rear BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A tires, and the parachute bag in the back (which just carries recovery cables). Power comes from a 392 Crate Hemi with Borla tall-stack injection, featuring intake trumpets that poke through the giant window in the hood (which articulates forward and down to open). The Dana 44 front and Dana 60 rear axles are moved forward and aft respectively. Look closer, and you notice little design surprises and delights such as the shift knob that is a little red Jeep encased in acrylic, round tail lamps suspended in larger round holes in the bodywork, the top-hinged bottom-venting windshield glass, twin fuel fillers leading to the central fuel cell with caps reading “Detroit Rocket Fuel Only,” and the CNC milled fender badges reading “X Rated 4×4” on the driver side and “Hemi Crated 392” on the passenger side.
Grand One
In celebration of the impending 25th anniversary of the Grand Cherokee as we know it, the Jeep design team went out, found a presentable 1993 ZJ-generation Grand Cherokee, and very tastefully updated it while retaining the original 5.2-liter V-8 (upgraded only with a cold-air intake and freer-flowing exhaust). To tackle Moab’s toughest trails, it gets a 2-inch lift with Dana 44 axles on new suspension links that effectively move the front axle 2 inches forward and the rear axle 1 inch aft. It also receives 33-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain KM2 tires wrapping 18-inch lace wheels that sort of ape those of the original. The stock rocker panels are clad in heavy-gauge steel rock-rail material painted body color. Styling touches include enlarged fender flares to cover the repositioned tires, a revised grille with numerals counting the eight slots, and a very subtle half-tone wood grain applique that pays homage to the short-lived ZJ Grand Wagoneer. Inside there’s a plaid flannel headliner, a hard-wired car phone, and a Game Boy in the back seat. Oh, and there’s a Bay-Watch sticker on the driver door inner panel proclaiming “Hoff Tested, Hoff Approved.” Nice.
Safari
Here Jeep looked to optimize a Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon model for family enjoyment of the great outdoors, with special emphasis on the rear seat occupants’ fun and enjoyment. Note that the rear bucket seats are slightly angled outboard to maximize the views out of the “windoors,” aluminum frames with full-height clear vinyl glazing that zips open for ventilation. The rear ones are rear-hinged to open “cabinet style” (don’t say suicide—also, don’t count on hermetic sealing out of gale-force rains). The roof also incorporates a drone dock, allowing the passengers to prerun the trail or simply peer over that impending precipice. A translucent roof panel lets in plenty of light, and larger than usual windows in the rear area ensure superb 360-degree visibility. There’s an iPad in the dash, and a stainless countertop with a slide-out cutting board on the inside of the tailgate simplifies trailside food and drink prep. Functional upgrades include bodywork that trims 4 inches off the front and rear for greatly improved approach/departure angles, a 2-inch suspension lift, Dana 44 lockable axles front and rear (from Jeep Performance Parts catalogue), and 35-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain KM2 tires on custom 18-inch wheels shaded by modified fenders. An integrated ARB compressor makes it easy to air the tires back up to pavement pressures after a day on the rocks or sand. The grille features outer slots that are squeezed CJ-style by the round headlamps—that’s one styling feature we expect to see more of.
Trailpass
This concept starts with a Compass Trailhawk and kicks the off-roadability up a notch with a 1.5-inch concept lift kit and 18-inch wheels wearing 245/60R18 Continental TerrainContact tires. The Jeep Performance Parts bin contributes the roof basket, roof rack cross rails, and lower rock rails, as well as the roof cargo bag and traction mats. The green paint is set off by a gloss-black hood graphic and roof treatment, with orange accents (tow hooks, badge backgrounds, and wheel details). There’s also a concept side stripe graphic and tinted head- and taillamp lenses. The green body color is echoed inside in the Jeep logos stitched into the Katzkin seat covers, on stitching on the seats and doors, and on anodized trim rings on the speakers, instrument cluster, and shifter.
Switchback
This Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon-based concept features another take on the safari experience, with a custom roof offering several vista windows above the rear seat and cargo area, as well doors that let plenty of air in above and below the belt line. The rest of the package consists of concept products that might eventually make the JPP catalogue—the power-bulge hood, 17-inch wheels (which are wrapped in 37-inch BFG Mud-Terrain KM2 tires), the aforementioned doors, the roof, the roof rack, sport bar grab handles, and LED lighting on the A-pillars, above the windshield, and in the taillamps. JPP parts include the Dana 44 axles, 4-inch lift kit, remote-reservoir Fox shocks, heavy-duty cast differential covers, steel front and rear bumpers, Rubicon winch, grille, cold-air intake, high-top fender flares, black fuel door, taillamp guards, reinforced tailgate hinges (to handle the weight of the oversized spare tire and first aid/roadside safety kit), and the LED head and fog lamps.
Luminator
With the advent of lower-power, brighter LED lighting, more participants are showing up prepared to produce serious retina-searing candela. As a result, more folks are mounting after-dark trail runs. This Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon-based concept pulls out all the stops on the lighting front, developed with input from Magnetti Marelli’s lighting division. The unit mounted to the hood includes an infrared camera that scans the horizon for the heat signatures of animals or pedestrians and then floods them with extra light. In back there’s a multifunction center high-mount stop lamp designed to provide visual confirmation of your progress or lack thereof. Green light indicates the vehicle is moving along at above 3 mph, amber suggests slowing to maneuver (1-3 mph), red obviously indicates full stop, and white illuminates when reversing. Other lighting includes concept A-pillar mounted stop lights, bumper-mounted fog lamps with cornering lights that illuminate with steering input, magnetic underbody rock lights, 7-inch LED projector headlamps, grille- and bumper-mounted LED lamps, and unique round LED combination taillamps. Helping power all this lighting is an auxiliary lithium-ion battery mounted in the cargo area that gets recharged during the day, a roof-mounted photovoltaic solar energy collector. Naturally the concept also gets a 4-inch lift, Dana 60 axles, and 37-inch Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tires on a set of Mickey Thompson Deegan 38 Pro 2 black bead-lock wheels.
CJ-Sixty Six
This one first broke cover last fall at SEMA, but it’ll be giving rides in Moab, so we’re including it here. It’s a mashup of three generations of Jeep: A reproduction 1966 Wrangler CJ universal body from Tuxedo Park is combined with a TJ-generation Wrangler frame and powered by a current-gen Mopar 345 Crate Hemi 5.7-liter engine. Dana 44 crate axles from Mopar ride on a 2-inch lift kit and spin JPP 17-inch beadlock wheels wrapped in 35-inch BFG tires. The seats are Viper-spec, and most of the rest of the exterior bits are from the JPP catalogue.
