“Haru! Get back!”
The wizard ignored the elderly kor’s warning, and cautiously approached the skeleton thrashing amid a sea of spider webs. The other adventurers drew their weapons and readied their magic, waiting for the foe to make a move.
“H-Hey, there,” Haru greeted nervously. “Are you all right? I mean, do you need any help-”
The undead reached out for Haru’s arm and pulled her close. The rest of the party rushed forward.
“What are you doing? Stop!”
Haru weakly raised her free arm, screwed her eyes shut, and braced herself for the blows that were surely about to start raining down. The anticipated attack never came, however, and Haru opened her eyes, watching as the skeleton grabbed the multitool from her belt.
“What, my Sea Gate army knife?” Haru asked incredulously. “What do you…ohhhhh.”
The other adventurers reached Haru’s side just as the skeleton began using the tool’s blade to hack wildly at the webs holding its sword arm hostage. Once its weapon was freed, it quickly tossed the tool back to Haru before attacking the rest of its bonds.
“What the…” The aged kor leading the expedition stared in shock at the skeleton. “It’s not attacking?”
Haru huffed a theatrical sigh. “No, but it’s rude. Hey, bonehead!”
The skeleton’s head snapped up to lock eyes with Haru.
“You know, if you wanted us to help cut you loose, you could’ve just said something.”
The skeleton pointed mutely to its bony neck, bereft of a neck.
“Oh, right. No throat or voicebox.” Haru blushed, embarrassed for not realizing this sooner. “Well…you could’ve pointed or something!”
Now the undead pointed its weapon to the other adventurers, who were still warily eyeing the deceased traveler.
“Hm. No…yeah, I guess they were about to whack you, huh? Heh, sorry about that!”
The skeleton nodded curtly, and promptly returned to the task of freeing itself. Meanwhile, Haru stared wryly at the multitool in her hand.
Tumblr media
[Multitools have been in style on Zendikar since long before the Mending, but it was the planeswalkers who slowly got the planebound denizens to start calling them Sea Gate army knives.]

So I THINK I've figured out how to make my Modern deck playable again. I've been complaining for a long time that CoCo is always a dead card in my deck because I simply do not make it to 4 mana ever because my only extra draw a turn is by saccing my Horizon Canopies. So anyway, I think I'm taking out CoCo and replacing it with 4 copies of Aether Vial. I also want to peak into the sideboard and see if I can put in a Kataki War Mage or two, but my sideboard is pretty solid (albeit outdated) as it is. I haven't played in a tourney with the deck in a year so I have no idea how Modern has changed since and I guess I'll have a better idea when I do that. Luckily Aether Vial (which was not in the budget list I based my deck off of and I didn't put into the deck for budget reasons) is a lot cheaper now and I can sell my extra Sheoldred to buy myself a playset. I finally got my last fetch so it'll go in for 1/4 of my Plains. Going to try to get a 3rd version of Path for my playset, even though I really hate mismatched cards, most of my cards are half foil/half not, half expedition/half not, etc etc
Also want to replace my (now) 3 Plains with ones I like better, probably foiled out, and my 1 basic Forest. Might try to get some OG Zendikar block fullart foil basics because this deck IS an ally deck based strongly on those sets lol

so i succumbed to temptation today and got a ZNR box topper pack for $25
(i had to pick out which one and didn’t trust myself, so the shopkeeper decided to roll a d20 to decide)
i prayed for a misty rainforest, and opened,,,,,,,,,,,,,, a copperline gorge ;-;;;;;;;;;;
Tumblr media
and i was hella sad because that’s the second cheapest expedition and it’s like 6 dollars
i don’t even play gruul colors like ever
not even temur even though it’s my own (extended) color identity
and then out of nowhere, because he wants an excuse to open a pack, the shopkeeper casually makes me a deal: he’ll open his own box topper and possibly exchange it for mine if i want whatever he gets. and i realize how fucking insane of a deal this is, so i take it, obviously.
so he pulls out a box topper, and i’m watching with a face like O.o
and then what does he fucking open????
Tumblr media
none other than this. simic. bad. boy.
let me tell you i lost my SHIT i was fucking yelling
(so obviously as it’s a ridiculously expensive card he’s not going to give it to me in exchange for a $6 one but i’m still getting a good deal on it so i’m going back to the game store with money tomorrow)
but holy shit what were the chances (yeah ok 1 of 30 but WOW that was literally the one fetch i really wanted and would be even remotely willing to pay for)
welcome to magic the gambling
also internally salty i didn’t pick that pack

Unpopular opinion but I LOVED Battle for Zendikar. I had just gotten back into Magic after a 15 year hiatus and it's part of what drew me back into the game. I loved the Eldrazi, I loved the story, I love my prerelease deck, I loved the expeditions. At the time I didn't understand why people didn't like it. I'm sure you've been over this before but what were the mistakes you learned from that set? I do get now that it was flawed, but it will still be one of my most beloved sets for how I experienced it at the time.
This Drive to Work podcast (#425) explores the lessons learned from designing Battle for Zendikar:

that thing where a long-disused mechanism jolts into motion and a curtain of dust falls from it
in fairness to me, WotC been putting out some real uninspired product lately and there were a lot of sets that were just straight misses for this blog. let’s speed-run this
THRONE OF ELDRAINE widely regarded as the worst thing to happen to standard in many, many years. also almost all the women are wearing unbelievably stupid hats.
Tumblr media
At least we got Savvy Hunter (by Dan dos Santos) out of it.
THEROS BEYOND DEATH there’s only two gorgons in this set and they’re not even hot why do i bother getting out of bed.
Tumblr media
Ashiok, Nightmare Muse (art by Raymond Swanland)
“oooOOOooh look at mE i’m aShiOk i’m the gEnderLesS incArnaTioN of niGhtmAre itsELf” Fucking prick. Still kinda hot tho. Like they could probably turn your life into a never-ending horror ride from which you only “awaken” to the next carnival of terror, which is frankly pretty kinky. Also for definitely sure they know how to use those talons.
Tumblr media
Renata, Called to the Hunt (art by Chris Rahn)
What’s the phrase? “Thick thighs save lives”?
Tumblr media
Klothys, God of Destiny (art by Magali Villeneuve)
That’s... okay, in fairness, that’s a lot of lives saved.
IKORIA: LAIR OF BEHEMOTHS sorry man i just don’t wanna fuck godzillas
Tumblr media
Cunning Nightbonder (art by Ekaterina Burmak)
Yeah okay she’s cute. This is what happens when Hot Topic girls grow up into Etsy renfaire girls.
Tumblr media
Duskfang Mentor (art by Livia Prima)
And here we see an instar in the same metamorphic cycle. Isn’t nature amazing?
Tumblr media
Luminous Broodmoth (art by Lie Setiawan)
Hang on, wait, a mothra’s a whole different story.
ZENDIKAR RISING remember battle for zendikar block and how unbelievably horny it was? surely this set will be a slam dunk for oh g-d dammit they sanitized the place it’s cancel culture run amok i tell you, political correctness gone mad
Tumblr media
Akiri, Fearless Voyager (are by Ekaterina Burmak)
Yeah she’s cool and powerful and attractive but she’s no Kor Sky Climber I tell you what.
Tumblr media
Drana, the Last Bloodchief (art by Tyler Jacobson)
Like it’s fine, it’s a reasonably-attractive woman crowned with horns, wielding a sword, and letting loose a blood-dimm’d tide from her hand, like I don’t hate it. But look back at Drana’s Emissary or Drana’s Chosen, or all the way back to original Zendikar block with Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief. Zendikar just isn’t horny anymore - as if the Eldrazi took all the sluttiness with them when they left.
Tumblr media
Expedition Skulker (art by Mathias Kollros)
I just miss Bloodbond Vampire, you know? Here, actually, just go look at the Battle for Zendikar post, I’m still proud of it and it is a LOT more fun.
And like let me be clear: mostly the shift in art over the years away from, like, typical horny teenage male fantasy has been a good thing. Like, compare 2007′s version of Radha to 2018′s. Right? Like that’s progress, and I think it would still be a good thing even if I as a lesbian didn’t find the 2018 version much, much, much hotter. But like... horny art is fucking valid and I have to think that this is much less about Feminism And The March Of Progress than it is, like, Hasbro sanitizing their brand to target a broader demographic.
Anyway! That’s a whole year of Magic products, not counting the stuff that wasn’t legal in Standard, so...wait, damn, I forgot the core set. Hang on.
CORE SET 2020 There’s...actually nothing in this set for me. Like a million Chandras and two Viviens and nothing is hitting. Alright, then. Whole year of Magic products, which brings us up to 2021, and only like. Four more sets until we’re current, and current means Innistrad, and Innistrad means hot vampires again! See you soon.

“Thanks again for this, Sage.”
“Think nothing of it, Bindle. It is my duty as a healer to help those in need. That responsibility extends to my fellow adventurers, so it most definitely extends to you.”
Tumblr media
The troll smirked and rolled his eyes as the angel tended to his wounds. “Even out here, in the middle of the Murasa jungle, with no expeditions happening or about to happen?”
Sage’s mouth set in a thin line. “…Yes.”
“Huh.” Bindle nodded slowly. “However you like. I’m just glad for the company. You‘re good to talk to, unlike the other explorers.”
“Of course!” Sage smiled. “And, likewise. As an angel, the others tend to…deify me. I don’t like that. And I’d wager they’re always scared of you?”
“Nail on the head,” the troll grunted.
“Oh, I almost forgot! Do you still want to spar?” Sage tapped her plate armor. “I came prepared this time.”
Bindle shrugged. “Honestly? I’m not that bothered. We can train some other day.”
“Don’t tell me you’re losing your killer edge,” Sage laughed.
“No. You’re just rubbing off on me.”
[How do you think Zendikar angels interact with their fellow party members?]

The Lore of Zendikar Rising: The Sea Gate Expeditionary House
Tumblr media
“Prior to the initial fall of Sea Gate, five expeditionary houses used the city as a launch point for regular excursions into the wilds. Named for the destinations of their first expeditions, they are the Valakut House, the Pelakka Foundation, and the Akoum, Murasa, and Bala Ged Expeditionary Houses. Each maintains hostels in various settlements, serving as resources for adventurers and explorers who need to hire guides or purchase supplies.
Since the rise of the Skyclaves, focus has shifted to a new house, called the Sea Gate Expeditionary House. This house is made up of the best, brightest, and toughest of Zendikar's adventurers and plays a key role in the discovery and exploration of the ancient Skyclaves.
It was founded by a kor woman named Kesenya, a veteran explorer who led the first expedition into the Tazeem Skyclave—known as the Sky Ruin of Emeria—after Iona abandoned her guard post to fight the Eldrazi. Deep within the treacherous ruin, she found a collar-like necklace inlaid with opalescent red gems. In what should have been a fatal, pyrotechnic mishap as her party left the Skyclave, Kesenya learned that the necklace offered an awe-inspiring degree of fire protection to its wearer—as well as some limited control over flames themselves. She dubbed it the Dragon's Frill. Word of her triumph spread far and fast, drawing the attention of the benefactor who would soon fund the founding of Kesenya's own expeditionary house.
Unknown to virtually anyone, that benefactor is Nahiri.
Tumblr media
Though it lacks the historical renown of the older houses, the Sea Gate House has quickly established itself as a dominant force in the adventuring business. The Dragon's Frill alone brought both wealth and renown in staggering quantities; now, adventurers flock from far and wide seeking placements on Sea Gate-led expeditions. With such demand, Kesenya can afford to be picky in who she takes on. Thus, despite its short existence, Sea Gate employs many of the most skilled and daring adventurers on all of Zendikar. Naturally, this leads to a higher rate of success on their expeditions, bringing in yet more resources, which in turn attract more powerful adventurers—so success begets success, and the Sea Gate House grows ever more powerful.
As more Skyclaves are discovered, all the expeditionary houses race to get their own adventuring parties there first—and Sea Gate House is a formidable competitor.
Other places in Zendikar were less successful in rebuilding.”
