How is it ableist to take a prosthetic in a fight? Or is it because Bucky didn't know they could disarm him like that?
Hi nonny! Thanks for asking in a genuinely chill way. I’m sorry you’re about to get an essay. My issue isn’t really taking a prothesis in a fight but how that imagery was used by the showrunners.
First and foremost, I want to say that there should be space for people to call out the racism in that scene and space to call out the ableism in that scene without one canceling out or justifying the other. Saying the scene is ableist does not mean I’m saying the scene wasn’t racist or that Ayo herself was not done wrong. I’m also not saying Ayo was wrong in verse to dismantle the arm and we should shit on her character. I’m not here to pit oppressed people against each other. Pain is pain and BIPOC should be able to discuss their pain without derailing and disabled people should be able to do the same. This scene being painful to watch as a disabled person does not justify Bucky’s actions around Zemo or dismissing Sam nor should we vilify Wakanda. So onto your question.
When I talk about these things, I think about a few things 1) real world implications for people who are watching and how real people feel seeing things on the screen and 2) in verse implications.
There are a few issues with that scene and my primary problem was the showrunner’s decision to include it rather than Ayo’s actions in and of themselves. Again, I do not think Ayo was villainous in this scene, but was she was playing into an issue disabled people experience in the real world as an able bodied character and representative of her government. And that was painful to watch. That’s a showrunner problem, not an Ayo problem.
There is an extremely long history able bodied people exerting bodily control over disabled people “for their own good.” Another example of this is arresting Bucky for missing therapy with an arguably quack psychologist that he did not choose. We see this in the real world of representative payees deciding what disabled people are “allowed” to spend their benefit money on. We see this in the long, violent history of state hospitals where disabled people were herded, experimented on and killed. We see this with involuntary hospitalizations. We see this with restraints used. We see this with telling people you have to go here, do this, follow these rules in order to get money, housing, medical care, prothesis, etc. Disabled people are constantly fighting for their right to exist in the world - forced sterilization of disabled people is our legacy. I used to be a disability rights advocate and I was constantly dealing with people trying to legally take away decision making power from disabled people and even controlling if they’re allowed to date, have friends, travel, or start families.
If you need a wheelchair to get around and you don’t have a ramp or someone to push you or an electric chair, you sit around your house all day at the mercy of able bodied people. Disabled people are often treated like a burden to able bodied people and are told we have to be eternally grateful for any accommodations received. I constantly experience disabled people saying “they worry about me leaving the house, so they take my chair/refuse to push me/take my cane/take my assistive tech/dump me at a day program I hate.” Many disabled people have have the experience of able bodied people targeting their disability to control them - taking prosthesis, taking canes, taking chairs, blocking paths so you can’t leave, putting you in an inaccessible place you can’t leave, being steered without your permission if you’re in a wheelchair or Blind. Being disabled is a fight every single day for bodily autonomy against what able bodied people deem safe or convenient.
Instead of just immobilizing Bucky in any other way, she took his assistive device. She targeted his identity as a disabled person. I understand that in that moment it was a safe way to end the conflict and she was certainly justified in fighting with Bucky. BUT it’s extremely painful for disabled people seeing assistive devices removed in order to control or contain a noncompliant disabled person and it wasn’t done with awareness of that by the creators. Again, I understand the circumstances of the scene, but the real world implications hit very close to home for disabled people. This is more a showrunner issue by not addressing systemic ableism and using a triggering scene without awareness. They really haven’t addressed systemic ableism in this show or tackled it in a meaningful way. My issue is not Ayo as a character. As a character, Bucky has done Ayo great wrong and fans have a right to be angry about that. Ayo is a badass and I’m a fan.
I would agree it was problematic in verse that Bucky didn’t know his arm could be removed. Bucky’s body had to be surgically altered to fit the prosthesis in order to protect Wakanda from Thanos. He doesn’t get to take it off. Prothesis can be painful and you could see that pain when he put the arm back on. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bucky deals with chronic pain related to his arm. He doesn’t ever have the option to use a prothesis that might look a little more natural, for example. This goes back to the big issue around consent and disability - disabled people are often denied consent around how others manipulate their bodies. It implies Bucky was not given fully informed consent for a medical procedure, literally the most basic tenant of medical ethics. Disabled people’s relationship with our bodies is complex and we didn’t see that acknowledged. This was another example of bad showrunning because they did not need to include this shit at all. Like they really want me to believe that Wakanda, one of the most ethical governments in the MCU denied Bucky informed consent for surgery? Nah, come on.
My problem re: fan discourse is that disabled people are saying “ouch that scene hurts to watch as a disabled person” and other fans dismissing that saying “well what’s the big deal? The Wakandans gave him a gift and they can take it back. And they didn’t!” This again goes back to the long history of disabled people being called entitled for asking for things like wheelchair ramps, transportation and medical assistance. The state makes disabled people jump through many, many hoops to get the bare minimum of services and if disabled people aren’t grateful enough, the services are removed or taken away and disabled people are blamed for it. It implies there is no social responsibility toward disabled people. The idea that any government body should be able extort a disabled person’s compliance in exchange for providing disability services is deeply disturbing. I also don’t think the Wakandans have that expectation at all. Ayo was in no way leveraging their help over Bucky, but was expressing how personally betrayed she felt by his actions. Bucky’s choice to undermine Wakanda was wrong not because they provided him with a prothesis/de-brainwashing, it was wrong because he, a white man, freed a terrorist who killed the King of an African nation. Framing it around the disability services he received is gutting.
Now people have PLENTY of reason to argue the situation was instigated by Bucky. AND THEY’RE RIGHT. This goes back to the difference between in verse implications and real world implications. In verse, Ayo had every reason to take him to task for Zemo. Of course she was going to fight him. He literally caused that whole scene to happen and these are consequences for that. That’s why I’m not arguing that Ayo was being terrible. My issue is more with how the show chose to include that scene without awareness to the real disabled people watching and that when disabled people say “ouch” fans tell them they don’t understand ableism or are not entitled to feel upset. Now when disabled people ignore the racism in the scene in order to defend Bucky, that’s a huge problem. It isn’t right to ignore the racial dynamics of people vilifying a Black woman for a fight a white man instigated.

Play Dead Until You’re Dead
Tumblr media
Pairing: Bucky x Reader (Cheek to Cheek)
Word Count: 3,149
Warnings: Lowkey angst ngl but nothing too bad
A/N: YAY im so excited for this part bc I've had this in my head for a while now and it gonna change so much for the story but I'm so excited for one shots in the future! also this is kinda not edited ill go through it again tomorrow :) enjoy!
MAIN MASTERLIST | CHEEK TO CHEEK MASTERLIST
A slow knock interrupts your plant watering and you glance at the time. Bucky said he’d be by in the afternoon, not the morning. You place your cup of water down and walk over to the door and open it cautiously before your eyes widen and a gasp escapes you as you see who awaits you on the other side.
Sam Wilson, dressed in civilian clothing, shoots you a smirk, “Why don’t we go for a drive?”
You don’t have time to answer. You don’t have time to think. Your blood is cold, your hands are cold, and your feet are cold as they slip into the sandals you keep by the door. You silently - and anxiously - step out into the hallway and shut the door behind you, never taking your eyes off of Sam.
“After you.” he gestures with a smile. You walk.
Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes have a lot of unspoken conversations. Although the rocky start they got off too all those years ago, they’ve grown incredibly close and trust each other like no one else.
So when Bucky calls him late at night, sounding confused, nervous, and unsure, Sam notices. Especially when Bucky then suddenly forgets why he called and what he needed to talk to him about.
Sam’s first thought was that he was drugged. Bucky was given something that clouded his mind. But when Sam saw him the next day, he seemed perfectly fine. So, he proceeded to his second thought.
Bucky was keeping a secret from him.
When Sam was passed the shield, there was one thing each of them asked of each other. Bucky asked to not be a part of the Avengers full time. Sam asked for no secrets and no lying (which he later asked the same from Sharon).
And since then, Bucky has been solely tasked with training new recruits for their seven week training which occurs twice a year, as well as to help on especially difficult cases called to them by the government. And in return, Bucky has not told a single lie to him or kept a single secret. Until now.
So Sam begins to get unimaginably curious. Bucky hasn’t picked up any new hobbies, and after a quick and encrypted check up, none of his extended family have passed away or had anything big happen to them, either. The last thing that Sam can think of to have caused such an odd change in Bucky is a girlfriend. But, if it is a girlfriend, why wouldn’t he tell Sam? Unless, it was someone he knew Sam wouldn’t like.
And that’s when he knew he had to figure out who it was.
So he waited. Until the perfect clue presented itself.
“No, I can’t tonight, man.”
“Why not? I know it’s Friday night, but, what, you got a hot date, or something?”
“Something like that - look, I just have plans I can’t cancel tonight. How about next Friday we go out?”
That was all Sam needed. The plans he couldn’t cancel. So, he waited until later that night and went over to Bucky’s apartment. He’d figure a harmless cock-blocking will teach him not to keep secrets from him anymore.
Until when he put his car into park and gathered his belongings to put them in his pockets, he noticed someone exiting the front of the apartment building; specifically a head of fiery red hair.
Imagine his surprise when he recognizes the face as you.
It doesn’t take long for Sam to figure out where you were. Everyone had already assumed you to be dead, or at least be far away from the country. But now that he knew you were still in New York, a few hours digging into your past and your file led him to a few key locations. From being so separated from society for so long, chances were that you’d find a place you were familiar with, if not the same place, the same area.
Kathleen Grover’s apartment is the first place he checks, but it’s since been turned into higher end condos, a place you probably wouldn’t be able to get away with staying at considering that you probably don’t have an ID or any money. So he checks for the absolute cheapest and low-lying apartments in the neighborhood. Which gives him two results. He just so happened to be lucky on the first one he chose to look into.
Which leads to now, the two of you riding in complete silence, on the way to the Tower, unbeknownst to you.
The only thing that’s going through your mind is Bucky. You hate the idea that he sold you out, because not only would it hurt your feelings, but it would mean those annoying voices in your head would’ve been right.
Yeah, time to put your big girl pants back on. What, you thought you’d live a normal life at some point? Buy a big house? Go out to fancy, populated restaurants? Maybe DisneyWorld? Get a grip! You were always a mistake and a failure. And you’re going right back where you belong, in that box! And Bucky will be right there in that observation room when they stick the needle in your arm and end you for good.
You swallow down the bile that comes up at the thought of going back to prison.
It was fun while it lasted. Decorating the apartment. The tattoos. The new recipes. The movie nights with Bucky. The sleepovers with Bucky. The list with Bucky. The long road trips with Bucky. The music playlists with Bucky. Bucky.
You’ll miss Bucky the most in prison. You’ll think about him everyday. You won’t be able to write him and he won’t be able to write you, not that he’d want to given the fact that he ratted you out, but there was no paper or writing utensils allowed, especially for you.
You’ll dream about his singing when he’d clean, his hugs after waking up, still warm from the sheets, and the unbelievable comfort his eyes provided.
...
“Hey, Sam, how are you?” Bucky absentmindedly answers as he finishes up watering the plants in his living room.
“Hey, man. You busy? Mind meeting me at the tower?” Bucky can hear his car in the background.
“Uh, yea, sure I can. New case?” He asks, setting down his watering kettle and walking towards his room to put on a fresh pair of socks and sneakers. If it’s a new case, there’s no point in getting all done up to listen to Sam debrief him.
“Something like that. Just get here, yea?”
That’s odd.
Normally when Sam calls Bucky about a case, he gives him at least some of the details. That was a part of their plan, their deal. Bucky only joins on missions on special occasions and with specific circumstances. So why wouldn’t Sam give the tiniest hint of what’s going on?
Unless it’s something Bucky’s involved in.
Is Zemo dead? Has he escaped? Some other big Hydra villain that’s come to light?
Bucky’s mouth goes dry like cotton at the thought of something involving you. Did someone recognize you and turn you in? Did Sam find you? No, no, he couldn’t have. The both of you had been so unbelievably careful, there was no way anyone found you.
Bucky lets out a shaky sigh before grabbing his keys and his wallet and heading out.
That phone call hurt. Hearing Bucky’s voice, for what will probably be the last time in a long, long time. Even if he betrayed you, even if he turned you in, even if he used you, backstabbed you, whatever. That fifteen second phone call caused an excruciating pain in your heart and it was so hard to hold back tears.
You didn’t want to cry. Captain America and Bucky Barnes had humiliated you enough for you to be crying on the way to the Avengers Tower. They don’t deserve your tears, and you don’t even deserve to be shedding them. This is exactly what you had coming to you.
Although the car ride felt like it lasted hours, the two of you arrived at the Avengers tower sooner than you would have liked.
Sam drove the car up though a back entrance, the back of the building opening up like recognizing Sam’s car. The ride in the elevator was quiet as Sam flashes a crystal-looking card and presses one of the thirty-seven buttons of the building.
He hadn’t put you in handcuffs and it seems he’s chosen a rather secretive way of transporting you here. Granted, you know you wouldn’t win a fight against Sam Wilson, even if you had Marine and HYDRA training under your belt, but, who knows what if you had a knife? Or were secretly an incredibly skilled fighter? What if your powers allowed you to, like, melt people’s brains and he had no idea? That’d probably be your best bet anyway, considering you're in custody at the Avengers Tower in sandals and no bra under your shirt.
The two of you exit out into an empty hallway, quiet, too, you notice. As the two of you approach the end of the hallway, swaying towards the door on the left wall, an interrogation room you deduct from peeking into the small window, a voice stops you.
“Hey, Sam? F.R.I.D.A.Y. told me you’d be here, what’s-”
His voice catches in his throat seeing you and Sam turn around to face him. He feels his eyes widen, his skin pale, his hands become clammy. This can’t be happening. This can not be happening. He walks closer and his steps slow as he’s standing in front of you. He’s literally speechless and as much as he wants to talk, to scream, to question what’s going on, he doesn’t.
His mouth hangs open even though no words come out, and you spit in his face before he gets the chance. He flinches and Sam pushes you into the room before you can react any further.
Bucky wipes your saliva from his cheek and he wants to cry. He wants to choke. He wants to throw a fucking tantrum in the middle of the hallway because he has absolutely no idea what’s going on. He feels a panic attack coming on and uses all of this strength to push it down as Sam exits the room. Relax. Figure out what’s going on so you can fix it; so you can get her the fuck out of here.
“You are going to tell me everything. And I mean everything. Absolutely no one knows that she’s here, or that she’s even alive. Sharon will remain unaware until you give me an explanation.” Sam tells him, his Captain voice taking over, and Bucky silently nods because he’s scared.
This is all so fucked up. And he hopes the truth he’s about to tell Sam will help you more than hurt you.
It’s funny how being in a familiar place affects your mind and body, regardless of how long it’s been. In the time that you’ve been in this interrogation room, your nerves have been completely on edge in a way that they haven’t been since being in prison, the voices have returned in your head, chatty as ever, and you haven’t been so angry since you killed that guard all those years ago in that first prison.
You pick and pull at your cuticles until they bleed and chew at the inside of your cheek until you taste metal.
Think they’ll let you decorate your cell this time? Or do you think they’ll just strap you straight into the medical chair and tie your arm up? No need to waste food, water, and a cot on you. Maybe they’ll bring back the electric chair or the firing squad just for this special occasion! Maybe they’ll have Bucky pull the lever-
“Shut up.” You mumble audibly, already feeling a headache coming on.
Spitting at Bucky felt good and bad at the same time. Good, because he deserves it, and more, after doing this to you; giving you the best and freest two and a half years of your life before snatching it all away from you in a second. Did he do it for fun? Did he like the game, the teasing of befriending you, taking care of you, all because he knew he’d do this and have the last laugh in the end?
It felt bad because as much as this sucks, you can’t find it in you hate Bucky. He’s become your best friend, your only friend, someone you actually trust in this new life you’ve been living. You want to forgive him, hug him, tell him it’s okay, that you’re not mad, that you could never be mad at him. Because you couldn’t. And that might actually be the worst part to all of this.
A click interrupts your thoughts and you stare at the Captain as he pulls out the seat across from you and sits down at the small table. How you wish there was a clock in here; how long had you been waiting for him here?
“What are you feelin’ right now?”
“Sorta like how your little wingman Riley felt when he fell out of the fucking sky.” You snap.
Sam doesn’t react. He remembers the way you’d act during the investigation years ago when they would question you in prison; he’d see the way you snap at them, at the guards, at the other inmates, how you’d really dig deep into people feelings and thoughts to say the worst thing to them in order to bring up bad memories. So, he was kind of already expecting that.
You’re upset, that he can tell from your attitude, your chipped and chewed fingernails, and you slouched sitting position, arms crossed across your chest as you lean against the back of the chair. He doesn’t blame you though, he’d probably be pretty upset, too.
“F.R.I.D.A.Y., stop all audio and video recording from this room from today and erase it completely from every system, please.”
“Clearance level 1 or 2 necessary for that, Captain.”
“Clearance level 2; Wilson, Samuel T.”
“Thank you, Captain. All recordings have been erased and stopped.”
Huh?
“I have a proposition for you.” Sam begins. Your confusion clouds your mind and you don’t process his statement fast enough to respond before he continues.
“I will announce to the press that your body has been found along the coast of the Pacific after following a lead on your whereabouts, I will clarify that you have been found dead and that you drowned, closing the case looking for you. I will provide you with a new identity; that includes a false birth certificate, passport, and other forms of identification with a new name, new birth date, new everything.”
“Is this a fucking joke?” He ignores you.
“There will be a few rules you will have to follow in return. You will have to stay completely hidden out of the populated public for one full year after this announcement is made. You will have to change your appearance; cut your hair, dye it, whatever. You will stay here at the tower where you will be monitored.”
He pauses, like he knows this will be the part you hate most.
“And you will be required to use your abilities to help on future cases the Avengers are tasked with; the same way you did when we came to you with those two cases in the past.”
You’re silent for a moment, “And if I say no?” Your voice is small. You really don’t want to do this. You want to go back to your apartment, you want your clothes, your plants, your blankets, your mugs.
“Then you will be arrested and sent back to prison, in the same exact place on death row you were before.” Your eyes shut, the headache hitting fully.
“Why.” You demand.
“I talked to Bucky,” A roll of your eyes. “He didn’t rat you out, if that’s what you're thinking. I found you all by myself. And I made Bucky tell me absolutely everything. And from there I’m making the decision myself to offer this to you. It’s not my first time helping a globally wanted criminal. Or my second. Or my third. And it honestly probably won’t be my last at this point.”
Do you believe him? Does it even matter if he’s telling the truth or not? You clearly don’t have a choice here.
He knows this. And depending on how deep he spoke with Bucky, he knows you won’t go back to prison.
“I’ll show you to your quarters. You’ll have your own bathroom and kitchen. Tomorrow morning you will be briefed with your new identity by myself, Bucky, Agent Carter, and Director Fury. F.R.I.D.A.Y will help you with that in the morning.”
The walk was just as miserable as it was when you arrived. You wonder where Bucky is. Does he have a room here? Is he back home in his apartment? Is he coming back? Is he thinking about you? Is he mad that you spit on him?
I mean, probably a little bit. I would be at least.
You take a moment to look around your new room; your new living quarters for pretty much forever. There’s so much stuff; a large bed covered with folded blankets and soft pillows, a folded pair of clothes, a rug beneath your feet that sits under a desk and a large bookshelf, filled with books of differing genres and notebooks, the desk is bare except for a small lamp and a cup of pens and pencil. The kitchenette is to your left and seems to be pretty modern, you can’t imagine it’s missing anything you’d need. The closed door against the wall you assume is your promised bathroom, but you don’t feel like settling in.
It’s strange, living almost all your life with nothing; as a child being poor with your family, having less than that in the Marines, and having nothing in Hydra. When you had your apartment, you had nothing, you cleaned the apartment building to make money to pay your cheap rent, you’d steal your clothes, food, and decorations, everything that Bucky didn’t buy you, anyway.
And now, you’re standing in a room that has everything you’d need, no need to pay rent, supplies and resources at your request; all that’s needed in return is the use of your powers.
But you hate it. All of it.
The colors are dull. The decor is boring. There’s no light. Nothing happy. No colorful blankets, no wacky mugs, no cute earrings, no mismatched socks and labeled underwear with the days of the week. No Bucky.
No Bucky.

“Doll, you awake?”
Your eyes fluttered open as you hear a familiar voice bring you back to reality.  Your mind is foggy, erased as last night didn’t even happen.  But, since you did have some heightened abilities, you were able to remember certain moments.
You remembered Bucky walking you to your room, then he undressed you and then he was on top of you, shirtless.  Then Steve was on top of you, giving you to Thor.  As you walked past, Bucky was all bloody, and you were in lingerie.
As you remembered everything that your mind allowed, you realised who was sitting on the end of the bed.  Bucky.
Immediately, you tensed up, crawling on the bed as far away as possible.  You couldn’t go and attack him because you were hooked up to a bunch of machines, beeping your heartbeat and giving you IV.  You didn’t want this man to hurt you, touch you or do anything to you.  Your mind was filled with fear and rage.  Your breathing was hitched, becoming erratic as the seconds continued.  Your hands were frozen in fear.
“Woah, doll, calm down.” Bucky soothed.  “I only want to talk, ok?”
You were still afraid, so you were not moving an inch.  You barely blinked, seeing if he was going to do anything.
Bucky sighed, knowing he might not get a response out of you.  If sadness was a color, that would be the color of his eyes right now.  He combed his metal fingers through his hair before explaining himself to you.
“Before I begin, what do you remember about last night?”
“You and I went on a date, for the bet.  We went to a diner and then we danced.  When we got home, you walked me to my room and undressed me.  Then, you were almost naked and on top of me.  But then Steve took me and then Thor took me here.” you recited.
“Ok, this might be confusing for you, but that wasn’t me,” Bucky said.
Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion, giving him a look.  You were biting your bottom lip, a habit that you had whenever you were nervous.
“No, that was you,” you said.
“Ok.  Remember when I wasn’t feeling good earlier that day?  You said we could cancel and I agreed?”
“Yeah, why?”
“I didn’t leave my room the whole day,” Bucky stated.
“How?” you asked.  “You took me on a date.  Hell, you tried to rape me!”
Bucky sighed again, in annoyance for how oblivious you were being.  You should know that Bucky, the real Bucky, would never in any way try to hurt you, let alone rape you.  But he couldn't comprehend how easily you believed it was him.  He couldn’t let this one memory ruin his chances, let alone his friendship with you.
“Y/N, I was drugged, just like you were.  With the exact same drug.  I was out for the whole day.  The Bucky that took you on the date was Loki.  He was disguised as me.” Bucky explained, his voice raising as he explained himself.
You were trying to comprehend what he was saying.  Everything that happened last night was so discombobulated that you had a hard time knowing what to believe.  What happened last night felt like a chapter in a mystery book, the climax that everyone was waiting for.  You just happened to be the victim.
“How do I know you’re not Loki right now?  How do I know you’re not lying to me?” you asked, fear laced into your voice.
Bucky raked his fingers through his hair before he told you it all.  It was definitely not going to be easy to explain.  How do you tell someone, ‘oh yeah, the guy that was me that tried to rape you wasn’t me?’  Bucky was racking his brain for something, one sentence to just say, ‘it wasn’t me, can we pretend this never happened?’
“Because I was interrogated by Tony, Thor and Steve.  Me and the other Bucky, the one that tried to rape you.  We were asked questions by Steve and Tony while Thor was holding Mijonior to us.  I am the one that got the most right, so that’s why I’m here.  Also, Steve wouldn’t let your attacker be in the same room as you.”  Bucky explained.
You took a deep breath and closed your eyes.  Your mind was telling you three different things.  One part was saying don’t trust this man, he is using you, he might rape you for real this time.  He could hurt or worse kill you.  But another part was telling you this was the real Bucky, the one that met you three years ago when you were with Rose.  He was the one that you were best friends with, through thick and thin with.  And the smarter part of your brain was telling you to listen to what this Bucky had to say.  If it seemed like he was telling you the truth, you would listen.  You had a knack for telling whether people were lying or not.  And if he was lying, well, it wouldn’t be a pretty sight.
“Explain everything that happened,” you said.
“Ok, this is not going to be easy.  You should know I’m not the best with words,” Bucky said.
You emitted a little chuckle, trying to ease the tension in the room.  It made Bucky beam a smile back at you.
“I guess before breakfast Loki stole my medicine, the one that me and you were drugged with, from my room.  I don't know how the son of a bitch did it.   But he snuck it into my drink this morning.  That’s why I was so out of it.  Then, a couple hours later, he went to you, disguised as me.  What did he tell you?”
You were still trying to process what Bucky had told you so far, since the drugs were messing with your mind.  So it took a couple of claps from Bucky to snap you back from your head.
“Oh, sorry,” you apologized.
“Don’t say you’re sorry, you’ve had a long night,” Bucky quipped.
“When Bucky, I mean Loki came to me, he said that you were feeling all better and that you wanted to go on the date.  So I got dressed and then we headed to the diner.”
“Ok, do you have an idea of when he drugged you?” Bucky asked.
“How long does the drug take to kick in?” you questioned, so you could get an idea of when Loki drugged you.
Since Bucky was the Winter Soldier, he had experience in the black market and drugs in general.  He bought pills and other lethal things from drug lords in Russia and Mexico, and used them to take out targets for H.Y.D.R.A.  H.Y.D.R.A. taught him about all drugs, from roofies to cocaine to inhalants, so if anyone asked him about drugs, he would have an answer.  He was like a mini Google, but the illegal side.
“Generally, it takes about an half an hour, but for me, it took an hour,” Bucky answered.  “How long did it take you?”
“Well, I went to the bathroom for a couple of minutes.  Then I went dancing with him.” you said.
“Did you drink it after you went to the bathroom?”
“No, after we were dancing, I drank it.”
“Did you stay at the diner after you danced with… him?” Bucky asked.
“No, not for that long.  We only stayed for a couple of minutes then we drove home.  It took about a half an hour and once we pulled into the driveway, I started to feel it.” you said.
“Ok, so it took you the normal amount of time,” Bucky said, trying to create a timeline in his head.
“So after, what happened?” you asked.
“Well I wasn’t awake yet, Loki explained this part.” Bucky said.
“I think he walked you to your room, like in a friendly way.  But then he undressed you, like you said.  Then, he undressed, as me still.  He was about to kiss you when Steve, Tony and Thor busted into the room.  Steve made sure you were ok, and when he realised you were out of it, Thor took you, like you remembered, to the medical wing.
“I didn’t wake up until I heard Tony scream “Son of a Bitch!” and then I heard a punch and what sounded like broken bones.  So I walked to where the noise was coming from, and it was surprisingly your room.  I don’t normally see you as a violent person, so I followed the noise.  Then I heard a voice saying that some person was their mission.  I asked who was your mission and then I realised what I walked into.
“I saw an exact copy of myself, and it was fucking scary, doll.  It’s like those creepy twins, Louise and Lisa Burns, ya know?” Bucky chuckled.  You chuckled along with him, and then you signaled him to continue.
“Then the whole room went quiet.  Tony and Steve looked like they just walked out of a horror movie.  Then Steve told me to get in the room.  Thor walked in the room and he was just as confused as the rest of us.
“Then Steve and Tony discussed what to do while Thor was watching us.  Steve finally decided to ask me and Loki questions that only the real Bucky would know, that being me.  I got all the questions right, and to my surprise, the other Bucky did too.  Steve was losing his shit.  He had no clue what to do.  So then, Tony asked the both of us a question.  Loki got it wrong and I got it right, and that was the deciding factor.”
“What was the question?” you asked.
“Tony asked us, ‘what did I call you when me, you and Steve were in the Russian hangar, looking for Zemo?’  The answer was  ‘Manchurian candidate.’” Bucky explained.
“Of course Tony would ask that,” you sighed.  Bucky laughed, and you could see the way his eyes crinkled whenever he smiled.
“After I proved myself, everyone knew something was up,”
“Yeah, no shit,” you remarked, getting an eye roll from Bucky.
“As I was saying, we all realized we hadn’t seen Loki the whole day.  And then Thor just rammed Loki into the wall.  They whispered some stuff to each other, and then the other Bucky transformed into, well Loki.  I was going to go beat the living daylights outta him, but Steve held me back.  So we let him explain what his evil plan was.”
“What did he say?” you asked eagerly, wanting to know as much details to the story as possible.
“He said that he wanted to get me out of the picture.  Make you see me as a villain, a monster.  And that hurt, because I know what that feels like.  But it hurts more when the person you love the most sees you like that.  He was going to manipulate you, to make you turn to him for comfort and I guess make you fall in love with him and hate me.  He said he guessed the answers to the questions, which in my head made no sense because he would have to go through the database to get those answers.
“Then I got a little emotional and said that I loved you and reprimanded loki for what he did to you,” he muttered.
“What was that Bucky?” you mocked.  “I didn’t hear you.”
Bucky gave you a glare and sighed.
“I said that I got emotional because I love you.  Loki should know that’s not how you treat a woman, especially you.  I told him how you should treat a gal, and then he had a snarky comment, something like ‘I’m the God of Mischief.  I show my love through actions not words.’ Bucky immiated, getting a small giggle out of you.
“Then,” he sighed, smirking and making punching motions with his hands. “I proceeded to beat the mother fucker into a pulp.  I knocked the mischief outta him like I did with those bullies in the 40’s.  He was knocked out once I was finished.
“After, Tony and Thor took him to see Fury, I think for more questioning and to figure out what to do with him.  Then I headed straight to you.  I’ve been waiting for you to wake up so I could tell you everything.”
You were still.  Your mind was replaying everything that Bucky had said to you, as if trying to evaluate if it was true or not.  A lot of it made sense.  In fact, it all made sense.  If the drug knocked you out for God knows how long, it should do the same for Bucky.
“How long was I out for?” you asked, rubbing your head.
“About a day,” Bucky said, counting the number of hours on his fingers.
“Sorry I kept you waiting for so long,” you smiled.
“It’s alright doll, you deserve the rest,” Bucky said.
You smiled back at him, but your mind kept going back to what he said earlier.  He was getting emotional over you?  You couldn’t believe it.  Even though you shared a kiss once before, this really proved how much he loved you.
Your mind was going in circles.  You knew he was telling the truth, but there was a small voice saying ‘he’s lying, the story’s bullshit, he just wants to fuck you.’  But your heart was in control here.  It was telling you Bucky was the one.  He cared about you more than anyone.  He was willing to fight to the death you.  He showed how much he cared about you.  Hell, he even did a fucking bet to fight for your love.  If that didn't show devotion, you don’t know what will.
“Bucky, come here,” you said, patting a spot on the bed for him to sit.  He got up from the end of the bed and sat right next to you.
“Are you sure you’re ok?  Do you want me to explain anything else to you?  I know it gonna be hard to process, bu-”
You didn’t want to hear anymore of his rambling, so you pulled his shirt, bringing his torso and lips closer to yours.  You pressed your lips for a searing kiss.  One to show everything you felt for him.  And it worked, because he pressed his lips harder against yours.  You marveled at how his soft, plump, pink lips felt against your.  Both of your tongues were dancing an unknown dance.  You were both gasping for breath when your lips parted.
“So,” Bucky asked, breathless.  “Does this mean I won?”
You chuckled before planting one more kiss to his lips, just to savour the feeling again.
“Yes,” you smiled.  “Mr. Barnes, you won the bet for my love against ‘he who shall not be named.’”
“I’ve never lost a bet doll, and I certainly was not going to lose this one,” Bucky smirked.
“Wait a second,” you realised.
“What?”
“How did Tony and Steve find out that Loki was going to rape me?”
“Well, from what I heard, Tony has cameras in each of our rooms, and the F.R.I.D.A.Y. let him know,” Bucky said.
“Omg,” you sighed.  “What have those cameras caught all of us doing?”
Bucky chuckled, realising how creepy it seemed to have hidden cameras in the rooms.
“Probably a lot of stuff,” Bucky smiled.
“Imagine what it will see in the future,” you smirked.  Bucky’s eyes got darker and he leaned closer to you, till your lips were just brushing against each other.  You could feel his breath fanning your lips like a glaze.
“Darling, those cameras will be lucky to see what I’m gonna do to you in the future.  They will learn how to properly treat a woman.”

MCU Rewatch: Civil War
I love the banter between Sam and Nat. “Someone ever told you you’re a little paranoid?” lol
I also love Wanda floating Steve into the building. “Just like we practiced”. So cute.
lol Redwing. Sam/Nat is an underrated pairing.
Wanda does not set off the bomb. Rumlow does, and then Wanda only fails to contain it.
There are like. Lots of hypocrites in the MCU, but, man, does T’Chaka takes the cake. lol My dude... I don’t think you’re the best person to talk about indifference.
I don’t want to make this commentary all like “Steve DOES do this thing fandom complains about him not doing”, because this happens through the entire movie, but I want to point out the only thing Steve says to Wanda is that the Wakandans’ deaths are on HIM, not her. Then, when she says it’s on both of them, he doesn’t dispute it.
I’m gonna SPARE you all from turning this into a rant about how much I hate the Accords, but boy oh boy, does the way Ross essentially presents it as “sign it or retire” and the way he refers to Thor and Bruce as “nukes” show a little of who this character is, and how meaningful it was that we’re presented to the Accords by him.
I have a lot of feelings about how Steve is essentially surrounded by his closest friends on the world when he opens the text telling him of Peggy’s death, and his reaction is NOT to tell ANY of them what is happening, but instead leave to cry about it alone, pretty much hidden. Suffering in silence. Sam is with him at the funeral, but did Steve even tell him? Or did he find out in some other way? God this moment makes me so sad.
His red eyes as he carries the casket. So much pain.
I used to resent the fact that the Russos gave the “you move” speech to Sharon, but in context, it makes sense. In this moment it’s what gives him motivation to not sign. I feel like, if it were given to him, it would sounds petulant.
Chadwick Boseman is just SO COOL in this movie. His accent, his expressions. T’Challa gets such an amazing introduction to the universe here.
Also, I once posted that T’Challa breaks the Accords in Black Panther on the Seoul chase scene, but it never occured to me that he totally does it in this movie as well. lol Good for him.
I love Steve’s “come on, man” when he catches the guy Bucky dropped lol.
Wanda and Vision’s flirt is cute.
I can’t get over the way Tony looks at Steve on the pens scene. I can only imagine how shooting it went. “Ok, Robert, now we need you to try to convince him...” “And look hopelessly in love and in pain while I do it. Got it.”
GOD THIS SCENE! I love that Steve totally sees through that Tony is going to try to get him to sign and that he’s trying to appeal to his nostalgia by bringing up the pens, so he starts out pretty defensive; then Tony gets personal when talking about Pepper, and Steve drops his guard. His “I’m so sorry, Tony” is very sincere.
I’m thorn on whether Steve assuming Pepper might be pregnant when she and Tony aren’t even TOGETHER is an indication of him and Tony not keeping much touch, because the movie kind of implies by Pepper cancelling her appearance at MIT that the Pepperony break up was recent. Either way, I feel like the fact that Steve just assumes they’re madly in love and ready to have a baby is a great detail for fics to use.
I feel like people overlook Tony’s highly personal reasoning for signing the Accords. Sure, it’s not the only reason he signed, but it was a strong one.
I also have feelings about how Steve says nothing after Tony talks about Pepper - generally feeling the impact of Tony’s words -, so Tony kind of got through him in a way, and then Tony immediately stands up and creates distance between them, turning away and quipping “In her defense, I’m a handful”. Oh, Tony.
One thing this scene clearly DOES imply is that they’ve never discussed Howard before.
Also, Steve looks genuinely hurt when Tony says he hated him. Awww. And then his smile when Tony goes “no, you don’t”. I love this scene to bits.
I want to make my commentary more insightful then “this is gay as fuck”, but the way Tony says “sometimes I wanna punch you in your perfect teeth” is just TOO GAY TO FUNCTION. He legit looks like he’s actively holding back from jumping him. I can’t deal.
And then with “I don’t wanna see you gone” his voice turns so soft. And it GETS to Steve, clearly. He’s honestly considering signing it.
And then the Wanda exchange happens. There’s a lot to unpack here, but I don’t want to waste time going through stuff people say about it that everyone and their mother already knows I disagree with, so... I’m not gonna dwell on it too much.
I AM gonna dwell on “these documents can be amended”. How? And most importantly, why? Once they’re signed, WHY would 117 countries agree to renegotiate something that’s already going the way they wanted to, just for a couple individuals they clearly have no respect for since they basically pushed the law on them without even trying talking about it while they were being discussed? What reason do they have to add in safeguards at this point? I feel like Tony is totally bullshitting here, or not thinking through what he’s saying.
All discourse aside, I love this scene. And Tony looks in so much pain after it ends, and I love that he puts the sunglasses on even after Steve leaves. Using an armor because he’s upset.
Tony fighting Bucky with the gauntlet is such a cool moment. That is a very cool sequence.
The use of the superserum and the potential other Winter Soldiers is so well-used as a red herring, both by Zemo and by the movie. It sets up the final twist so well.
“I can’t control their fear, only my own” I love this line.
No hate for Sharon, but damn that’s an awkward kiss.
Scott meeting Steve is an eternal mood.
The airport fight is so fun. Such a great use of so many different characters.
It’s bizarre that the movie clearly says Tony was in the wrong, has Tony VERBALLY acknowledge this, and his fandom sitll somehow denies it. lol
T’Challa mentions there are people on the way when he holds Zemo down, so the movie does respond to the question of how did Tony come back from Siberia.
The final scene in the bunker is top notch. It’s painful and hurtful and so well-acted. This movie really hits well on the two buttons of why you’d make superheroes fight. There’s both the fun “what if X fought Y”s stuff, and the emotionally heavy stuff.
Steve’s apology in the letter is... pretty much as apologetic as apologies go. He says “I’m sorry, I know I hurt you, I thought I was going for you but I was just sparing myself”. Sure, he could’ve gone on about his reasons, but... it’s an apology, and not a “i’m sorry, but...” type of apology. I feel like anyone hoping to see Steve grovelling will be disappointed, but also, I don’t think Tony is expecting him to do that in canon, either. I feel like the apology is there, and while things obviously aren’t fine, I don’t think it’s fair to act as if it isn’t.
And it’s over! I actually like this movie a lot. The pacing is airtight - it’s two and half hours long but it flies by. There are so many fun moments, but the emotional parts still hit very well. Also, I feel like a lot of bad discourse about it (especially about Steve) comes from people just... not rewatching it, and forgetting what actually happened other than the main events (the same applies to AoU). It’s a good movie. I agree with the criticism that it’s not really a Steve movie, it’s more of an Avengers movie with slightly more of a focus on Steve, but I think the quality outweights this concern, imo.

The Russo brothers might return to direct another Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, and here are some options for what it should be (if it doesn’t get canceled). Anthony and Joe Russo are among the most accomplished directors in the MCU’s history. They’re the only ones to direct four movies, and each one continued to raise the bar in terms of spectacle and box office earnings. Avengers: Endgame was the cherry on top of their Marvel run as it earned rave reviews and became the highest-grossing movie of all time until Avatar‘s re-release reclaimed the record.
It has been only a few years since the Russos took a break from Marvel to direct other films, such as Tom Holland’s Cherry, but their MCU return is already being discussed. The directing duo has always expressed an interest in returning to work with Marvel Studios down the road. However, there is some doubt around the Russos’ MCU return after Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit against Disney for Black Widow‘s Disney+ release. This might not seem like it has anything to do with the Russos at first, but they are reportedly questioning how their next MCU movie would be released and how they would be paid. Although the Russo brothers are no strangers to making movies for streaming services, they likely received huge paydays from their Marvel movies due to them shattering box office records. They would want to be fairly compensated if their next movie debuted on Disney+ in any capacity.

The Russo brothers’ impasse with Disney about their MCU return will likely be resolved at some point, though. If the Black Widow lawsuit reaches a conclusion where Scarlett Johansson is paid what she believes she is owed, then the Russos should close their own deal to direct another Marvel movie. Reports of their possible return didn’t reveal which project could entice them to come back after Avengers: Endgame. But, there are many realistic options based on what the Russos have discussed in the past and Marvel is developing or building towards. Here’s what the Russos’ next MCU movie could be.
Tumblr media
If there is one movie most likely to get the Russo brothers back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would be an adaptation of Secret Wars as an upcoming event movie. There are two versions of the Secret Wars story in the comics, but both revolve around bringing characters from across the universe/multiverse together to fight on Battleworld. Jim Shooter wrote the original 12-issue series in the 1980s, and Jonathan Hickman engineered the 2015 reimagining that combined Earth-616 and the Ultimate Universe. The Russo brothers are fans of both iterations of the story and have openly discussed that a Secret Wars movie is what they would want to do next for Marvel.
The Russos returning to the MCU for Secret Wars would make a lot of sense. They are already familiar with handling a project with a massive scale, and that is necessary as Secret Wars could be even bigger than Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Marvel Studios wanting to put this story in their trusted hands is understandable. The Secret Wars movie‘s cast could include all current MCU heroes, many MCU villains, alternate versions of characters through the multiverse, and even bring back actors from the Fox X-Men movies or previous versions of Spider-Man. With the multiverse set to be a big part of the MCU’s future, it will only be a matter of time before Secret Wars is made as a movie. If this is what the Russos are planning to do for their MCU return, then it could happen sooner than later too.
Tumblr media
Outside of Secret Wars, the Russos have made it quite clear they wished they could’ve used Wolverine during their previous MCU films. The possibility of them returning could allow them to be in charge of his MCU debut. There have been plenty of rumors about Marvel Studios developing a Wolverine-focused Disney+ series, but a solo movie is just as likely to happen with him first. The Russo brothers could be part of the beginning of a Wolverine movie being developed if they want to direct it. This could even give them a chance to bring Wolverine’s fight with Hulk from his comic debut, which they love, to the screen. Meanwhile, the MCU would hand them a possible new franchise and entrust them with crafting a fresh take on Wolverine that can stand apart from Hugh Jackman’s.
Related: Hugh Jackman Is Right About His MCU Wolverine Return (Why It Can’t Happen)
Tumblr media
If a Wolverine solo project is destined for Disney+, the Russos could also potentially get their hands on the character and the full X-Men roster by doing the MCU’s first X-Men movie. Kevin Feige previously confirmed they are developing a movie with the mutants, but no details on what it will be have surfaced yet. The Russo brothers could be viewed as the safe choice in such a scenario, but Marvel won’t want the first MCU X-Men movie to be anything short of a hit. They know how to handle the team dynamic inherent in the X-Men, which could give them a chance to go slightly smaller in terms of scale while still delivering on plenty of spectacle.
Tumblr media
If the Russos want a big event film for their MCU return and Marvel Studios isn’t ready to make Secret Wars already, Avengers vs. X-Men could be another option. The 2012 comic event was created by Jonathan Hickman, Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Ed Brubaker, and Jason Aaron. A proper adaptation of Avengers vs. X-Men would take years of movies and Disney+ shows to get the MCU in a position to tell this tale. But, the MCU could use it as a framework to pit the Avengers against the X-Men without dealing with as much setup. The Russos already know what it takes to make a compelling movie about heroes fighting other heroes after Captain America: Civil War. Avengers vs. X-Men could be their chance to bring the new look Avengers together to square off against the first iteration of the X-Men and set them up to be allies moving forward.
Tumblr media
The Russo brothers’ possible secret return could also be tied to the secret project reportedly in the works that will bring Chris Evans back as Captain America. Less than two years after Steve Rogers grew old with Peggy Carter at the end of Avengers: Endgame, reports surfaced that Chris Evans was in talks to make his MCU return. He and Kevin Feige have indicated that this is premature, but perhaps that’s because the Russos would direct it. Captain America was one of the main characters in all of the Russo brothers’ prior MCU movies, so them coming back tell more stories with him makes sense. It could even explain why they once teased that Chris Evans’ time as Steve Rogers wasn’t over. No matter what this secret Captain America project is about, there’s a chance Evans might only want to return if it means working with the Russo brothers again.
Tumblr media
The Russos’ next MCU movie could also potentially be Thunderbolts. After spending so much time focusing on the biggest heroes in the MCU, this could be the opportunity for them to handle an ensemble led by some of its most prominent villains or anti-heroes. They already are familiar with possible leaders like Baron Zemo or Bucky Barnes too. Thunderbolts could even be a chance for them to tell a slightly darker story more in the vein of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Whether the Thunderbolts team is assembled through villains taking on new identities to pose as heroes or as a more Suicide Squad-type team of reformed foes, it would be fun to see the Russo brothers take on a different type of MCU team-up movie next.

I didn’t like the failsafe just because Bucky looked so sad when his arm fell off, but I understood why they have it and I don’t think there is anything wrong with them
People just need something to be mad and so they pick apart every little thing
I do think they should’ve told him about his arm. That’s the only part I feel they were wrong about, but it’s a failsafe for a reason. I’m sure any engineer has a failsafe just incase something goes wrong. Failsafe are reasonable.
But for white people to sit up here and try to cancel Wakanda because they baby Bucky and don’t think that he did anything wrong by going behind the very people who helped heal him and release the man who killed their King, is very much telling.
I love Bucky, but I’m not gonna sit here and ignore what he did. Ayo felt betrayed about the Zemo thing, just as much as Bucky probably felt hurt about this arm. Both are justified and both are wrong.
Them white people will sit back and be silent while a whole bunch a racist shit happens to Sam, but as soon as something happens to Bucky, here come the essays.
