The most celebrated event of the Sani festival is the bridal dance. All the newly wed brides of the Sani village, arrive all dressed up in the whole bridal finery.
The bridal dress is rather elaborate, turquoise being the dominant colour. The head-gear studded with turquoise stones is called Perakh. Similar gear covering the ears is known as Skorshey. A bright scarf on the back with golden designs in called Yogar or Bok.
Wearing all of this, weighing several kilos more than their own weight, the brides perform a ceremonial dance. The local Zanskar folks then greet them with Kathas, the white scarf, congratulating them and wishing them well.
When the Tibetans from the high plateau of Northeast settled in the Indus Valley around 500-600 BC, they mostly followed the Bon religion. In 7th century Buddhism was brought to this region of Ladakh by the great Lama Songsten Gampo which soon spread across Zanskar and beyond. And due to the isolation of Zanskar the area has remained devoutly Buddhist to this day. To know more about Zanskar, its history, Geography, Culture and people join us on our effectively designed Tours and Treks encompassing the Southern Ladakh next summer. Everything feels easy to you! You have dived into the deep sea. You have swam with a shark, and jumped from a terrifying height onto a rough ledge. But, have you hiked to the frozen lake across a thick layer of ice? All are done and dusted! So, what will the Zanskar trek do for you?
Well, YOU ARE WRONG.
Zanskar Trek, aka the Chadar Trek, is one of the most cherished winter trails in Ladakh, India. While the frigid weather has the entire country trembling, you still have to wait for the harsh winter to hit Zanskar Gorge. The wait won't be over until the Zanskar river is frozen completely. Only then the journey will start at the altitude of 11,123 ft above the ground level. The trekking will technically take place on the frozen Zanskar river. The river in winter looks like a thick sheet of ice, hence the name Chadar.
As the name ‘Chadar” radiates comfort to your soul, the trek is anything but easy. Rather, the Zanskar trek is considered one of the most difficult yet eye-soothing experiences in life. Yet, this does not imply that the location is only approachable during the winter. Tourists can visit the place in summer as well. Therefore, if you are not in a comfortable situation to visit the place in winter, you can try summer. The river is usually streaming during the summer. As a result, tourists may enjoy river rafting while exploring Ladakh's natural beauty. And to let you know that you will be rafting on one of the world's highest, most exotic, and isolated river trips.
The river passes roughly 105 kilometres from Remala to Nimu near Leh. But, the measurement is just one way, and the journey is both exhausting and intimidating. Though the expedition is largely about walking over the ice river, there may be some cold rocks and boulders to climb along the way.
Everything will seem simple to you at this point. But, when you walk on the frozen lake, the cold will numb your foot. Consider how the cold will freeze your body. Now, you may be wondering why your body will feel cold. Answer to this.
At the end of the day, when you have completed your quest, where will you lie down? There won't be any houses, forget about hotels. The trek coordinator will arrange tents or camps right over the ice. You have to sleep in a sleeping bag over the frozen river. As the night darkens, the temperature will decrease to -32 to -35 degrees. While we don't leave our residences in temperatures of 4 to 5 degrees, strolling in -35 degrees won't be easy for everyone. That is why it is necessary to understand your body and its durability. Zanskar trek is not for all, and people need to acknowledge that.
After the obstacles, one may wonder why the Zanskar trip is so popular among trekkers. The visitor shall bear the whole responsibility when trekking. You must perform everything on your own, from bringing fundamental supplies to using them all. Hence, when you complete the Zanskar quest, you will get an understanding of your capabilities. You will be aware of every element of your life. The adventurous spirit will be strong, and you will push yourself to finish the journey. After you finish the trip, a sense of relief and happiness will wash over you, making you feel brave.
The Chadar or Zanskar trip is difficult, but the reward is tranquil. On the contrary, if your soul yearns for adventure and the Zanskar expedition tickles your interest, you must embark on the journey.

Buddhism regained its influence over Zanskar in the 8th century when Tibet was also converted to this religion. Between the 10th and 11th centuries, two Royal Houses were founded in Zanskar, and the monasteries of Karsha and Phugtal (see picture) were built. Until the 15th century Zanskar existed as a more or less independent Buddhist Kingdom ruled by two to four related royal families

I don’t know how to describe this book, because it’s not merely a travelogue, it’s much beyond that. I actually felt I was with them on this trip seduced by the vastness and beauty in those snow-capped mountains, experiencing mythology and history, grateful for witnessing the incredible beauty, humbled by the mightiness, and finding happiness in the smallest of things! I must say, I have the…
The last ride we made to Zanskar with our guests through mighty Shinku la was in December 2022. A short 3 day excursion we made in the Lungnak valley with a crispy short hike to Phuktar monastery, the ancient marvel of Zanskar. We have been waiting patiently to resume our tours and treks in Zanskar for this summer. We expect the Shinku la/Shingo la to open by April 2nd week for vehicular movement. Do join us for an immersive experiential Jeep Safari to this remote land. Lachen Palker Palace This is the palace which was built by sengee Namgyal who was one of the prominent kings of the Namgyal dynasty and also the last ruling dynasty of Ladakh. It is quite amazing to know more about the history of the Ladakh which has seen quite a lot of wars and battles as well but hardly has made it into any of the history textbooks of the schools.I hope one day, the school boards wake up and have a more assimilated curriculum than learning about the American independence war in India. #ladakh #leh #namgyal #zanskar #zanskarcalling #history #curriculum #indianhistory #local #motorcycle #motorcyclelife #travel #travelindia #travellog #xpulse200 #triumph #versysindia #bangaloretravellers #photography #canonphotography #canonindia https://www.instagram.com/p/CibtVnjvBWZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Zanskar, Zahar (locally) or Zangskar, is a tehsil of Kargil district, in the Indian union territory of Ladakh. The administrative centre is Padum (former capital of Zanskar). Zanskar, together with the neighboring region of Ladakh, was briefly a part of the kingdom of Guge in Western Tibet. Zanskar lies 250 km south of Kargil town on NH301.
