Chasseurs Tagals and the First Vietnam War

Often forgotten in history is the Cochinchina campaign of 1858 to 1863, which was the first major confrontation between Western nations and a Vietnamese state. Sparked by the executions and arrest of European missionaries and converted Christian natives in Vietnamese territory, the French Empire, along with Spanish Empire, decided to intervene and prevent further prosecution.

With the garrison in Philippine colony being the closest force Spain had to Vietnam, it was from here the Spanish contingent would be taken from. The Governor-General of the Philippines would assign the 1st King's Regiment, the 2nd Queens Regiment, and the 3rd Regiment of Ferdinado VII to Vietnam. All three units would be officered by Europeans, with native Filipino soldiers composing the main fighting force.

Dubbed by their French counterparts as Chasseurs Tagals (Probably because most of the soldiers came from the Tagalog region of the Philippines), these troops would serve in the occupation of the Tourane's forts and participate in the capture of Saigon, the main port in the Cochinchina area.

In the battle for Saigon, the Chasseurs Tagals would make a name for themselves, as they stormed the citadel of Saigon, being some of the first troops atop its walls.

After the siege, these Filipino troops would assist in the occupation of the port city, garrisoning fortifications and patroling the nearby countryside.

By 1862 a peace treaty would be signed by the French, Spanish, and Vietnamese state. Under the agreement, the Cochinchina provinces would be annexed by the French, while the Spanish would receive a monetary compensation worth 4 million dollars.

The Chasseurs Tagals would remain in Cochinchina to help maintain control over it against rebellions. However, by 1863 the Spanish contingent would be withdrawn and the Filipino troops would return back to the Philippines.

A century later, Filipino troops under the Philippine Civic Action Group - Vietnam would return to the country and participate in another Vietnam War.

As you can guess it’s got a bit of angst and things get very tense between Dean and Cas but it does have a happy ending! ♥♥♥

WOAAHHHHHHHH. this whole analysis page is making my jaw drop to the floor like it’s truly award-worthy how you managed to catch some of my very VERY niche references here and there. I cannot applaud you enough!!!! good lird!!!!! truly amazing work, you!!!! I’d like to give some of my comments as well :]

1. captain zero is not beating the bitter ex husband allegations #actuallydivorced

2. zorran and zip take after captain zero but in vastly different ways. zorran has been around far longer than zip; he’s his first employee and right hand man, after all. he took after captain zero like his speech mannerisms and view on the world, but the strain of responsibility captain zero put on zorran weighs down on him. zip is a newbie, having joined just a few weeks ago. he sees captain zero as a father figure, which is not 100% reciprocated by him (literally the first adult figure in zip’s life to show him a semblance of human decency which is not going to end well for the z-stack youth). zorran took after something that is a thorough, long process (speech mannerism), while zip took after something that is at face value (coat). also reflects their emotional maturity (zorran is more cautious, while zip is easily impressionable and needs others to guide him despite their intentions)

why does captain zero name him “zip”? it was zebedee’s idea, partially. he joked that he got the epiphany when he ate a piece of marzipan, but captain zero thought it’s fitting. zip means “to close something”. zipline. zipper. ziplock. to zip. you say “zip it” when you want someone to shut up. (also remember how zorran said “shut it zip in the first episode)

"he sees a child” captain zero views zip as an employee when he expects zip to go through with his plans, while he views zip as a child when he’s talking down on him and giving commands. zip has no problem with this

3. “why is it not a war?” captain zero’s scared. ahaha

4. “stop talking” remember the first episode, sunshine, and his line, “I don’t expect you to think”? remember how I said in the previous posts that there’s hunting dog imagery within captain zero?

5. zip’s crossword puzzle!!! yes!!!!!! you noticed it!!!!! the words and the meanings I try so hard to convey!!!!!!! you nailed almost every single one of them

6. “cops? acab” this is hilarious and fitting considering what I have in store for captain star

7. “invasion” “something is coming” with how captain zero’s criminal history remains shrouded in darkness and the very tiny bits we got from johnny cuba’s words to zebedee...... I’ll just say that it’s going to come back to bite him

8. “camaraderie” “9 across doesn’t exist” these speak for themselves. especially with zipcents there (starts clawing on my face)

9. the fleets do work together, occasionally. they gotta set aside personal feelings for the contracts, and to an extent, their captains. and yeah something bigg is coming and it is Not Pretty! (see point 7)

10. zip’s suspenders has three black lines, while zebedee and the rest of the z-stacks have five!

that’s all I have to say for now!!! phew!!!! this was very fun to respond to and I’m really happy you noticed the stuff I’ve laid out for fortezza bigg city so far!!!! also I love the tiny doodles :3 zebedee is so cute!!! and your gal zaffre looks amazing! the suspenders are definitely fbc’s signature. her high hairdo is such a fantastic look on her, too :D once again, thank you very much!!!!

Oh, yeah, kinda.

So, for the R&R boys specifically, because they're the ones I have the most notoriety for writing, and the ones who I've kind of made into their own, distinct entities;

Killer is "Targe", a generally target-shaped shield that is easy to wield and speaks to his position as Nightmare's right hand. Coincidentally, Ren also uses a targe as a shield. Dust is "Mote", because it evokes the image of a dust mote that floats through the air easily. He's a bit more easygoing and lazy than the rest of the crew (arguably closest to his canon counterpart) and tends to go with the flow of things. Axe is "Haft", the handle of an axe, or to provide one. This one is a bit of a play on words, because while he goes by the name of his weapon in-universe, he has a fairly good handle on himself. Cross is "Saltire", or "Sal", which is another term for St Andrew's Cross, or the heraldric use of a large cross (from corner to corner, like an X) on a flag. Appropriate for someone who puts himself in the position of a knight so often. Baggs is "Sorpor", a (medically induced) unnaturally deep sleep or stupor. The medical term for "warning: may cause drowsiness." This one I sought specifically, because I knew there had to be a proper term for "the side effect of extreme drowsiness caused by medicine" and lo and behold, I was right. Nightmare is "Umbrose", an archaic term for being dark, or darkness. It also sounds pretentious and high-brow enough to be a pseudonym for him. (It also sounds similar to "Ambrose," which means "Immortal" and is also a pretentious, high-brow name)

...And since they showed up too:

Dream is "Aubade", a musical movement pertaining to the dawn, usually light and uplifting. Dream to me seems very... airy and musical, so using this for him seemed very fitting Ink is "Haboku", a method in Japanese art of using ink splats and blots to make scenery from the shapes it creates. It alludes to Ink's original inspiration (the brush itself) and also incorporates his namesake. Blue is "Zaffre", a blue pigment created by roasting cobalt ore. It was used to make smalt to stain glass. Simple, pretty, but also extremely dangerous.

So I guess if you're looking for a way to differentiate mine from someone else's take on the character, you could use these names. I have them in reserve, but it's more of a "just to have around" thing rather than proper names for them all.

Chaos Talk: The World (or Za Waurdo)

this part i will need a lot and i mean A LOT of feedback and help because i have never, EVER done this before. i usually base my settings in the real world south but i wanted to have more freedom. again thank u to my beautiful gf @annie-manga for the help with the names and locations! ok here we go

The world the story takes place is in is called Terrapin. The main city is called Diamondback. There are lots of regions but here are the main four (more to be added as the story goes on):

Ignistaur (Ignis + Star): Primary aspects of their economy/society are technology, metals(Starians), smithing(including gunsmithing) & engraving, sports(mainly boxing) and the arts. Heavily based on Atlanta and some parts of the Bahamas. Capital is King City, where Nick lives.

Tide Dale: Primary aspects of their economy/society are lumber(fine paper & woodworking-including furniture), wool, fine meats, knowledge & secrets.  Based on California and Scotland. Captial is Zaffre, where Adam (used to) live

Nacre: Primary aspects of their economy/society are agriculture(corn, wheat), bread, textiles, furs, dyes, and the arts. Based on Alabama and Brazil. Capital is Orquídea Soleada, where Maria lives.

Dusk Strike: Primary aspects of their economy are stonemasonry, salt & other minerals. They mostly trade with other nations and are on good terms with them. Based on Britain and Ghana. Capital is Golden Strike, where Jackson (used to) live.

Utona: ????????????????????????

There stood a little girl. Alabaster skin and hair were so light that Rin almost couldn’t tell where her hair began. It was like she was sculpted from marble or plaster by a master. The girl turned towards Rin. Her pale hair spun as her zaffre blue dress billowed out. Her eyes opened revealing liquid gold. Butterflies whose wings matched the intense shade of blue as the girl’s dress fluttered out of the ground. Their wings flapped. There were so many butterflies that Rin couldn’t even think. She watched as the creatures flew towards her and surrounded her. The lush green grass that suddenly appeared around her feet died. Out from the ground, rose a large floor of smooth grey bricks. Bricks rose from the ground and surrounded her. The flapping of wings turned into stone crashing against stone. Iron drove itself into stone as she turned to the side to see herself being locked behind bars. Beyond the bars was the same little girl as a pair of hands with long spindly fingers grabbed her shoulders. A scream tore itself from her throat as she was torn into two and an explosion of blue butterflies filled the room.
