This is Xia, and if no one guessed she is a... Zadr child... ... I was bored okay. Anyways, she's half human half irken and can switch between both. She's pretty happy most of the time but never shows it, with a smile at least. Her personality is mostly like Dib's but she can also switch to being like Zim if he was worse. Xia also likes paranormal stuff like Dib, but is more in music and science, as well of as anarchy. Also, about the symbol, she made it because she's sick of the Tallest, especially since she knows they gave him a mission years ago. Have another corporeal pak-zim 😌 they can be read in any order haha but yeahhhh while some of Zim's bad decisions are his own, some are because of the PAK lol (like blowing up the Irken capitol in Operation Impending Doom 1).

Note: most Irkens don't have this problem! It's just zim arguing with his pak functions because... he can. Other Irkens probably don't even notice a separation between what they want and what the pak says

Not all pre-canon but again I highly recommend this whole series. I love how this author writes the Irken empire. It feels very alive and takes things from our world while making them fit in this one. I also highly recommend their other IZ fic for similar reasons, though it is Zadr and explicit. Excellent stuff.

jhonen vasquez has said Zim is older than any human currently alive but Zim is intended to be seen as a kid.

The show Bible calls him a kid

In the ETF scene where Zim is human he's a human kid

Zim is intended to be seen as a kid and a lot of people who worked on invader Zim make stuff to encourage ZaDr which they wouldn't do if it was an adult and child

Zim is intended to be seen as an equal to Dib the same age, size, power, ways of thinking, etc.

If you see Zim as a kid that's accurate, if you see Zim as an adult that's also accurate.

Why ZaDr?

Think of every worthwhile rival ship that has ever existed; dip it in a poison coating of cynical worldbuilding, sprinkle it with a topping of shunned existence, and let the devil kiss it with a waxy pair of slimy, scifi alien lips. Only then, will you  have yourself a sample of what ZaDr has to offer. These characters are compelling in themselves; one being a bizarre and paranormal obsessed clone of Earth's greatest scientific mind, the other a malfunctioning spaztic robot ant from beyond the stars. Each of them ostracized, for one reason or another, largely by virtue of their own passionate past mistakes.Those mistakes, failed efforts to be seen as worthwhile, to be praised, to be loved. But then you set them against each other, as enemies. As mirrored foils. Neither of them in the right, gray morality reigns supreme as they are  purely obsessed with their own selfish reasons for self aggrandizement. Anything “good” that might happen as a result of their actions is always cast in the light of unintended circumstance. The true fight is with reality itself, while the sharp end of that crushing conflict is pointed towards the only one who could possibly understand what they’re going through. In the world of Invader Zim, every mentor, leader, parental figure, teacher, adult, child and Invader, feels more real by virtue of misanthropic absurdity. Their inability to provide the support and guidance for the main characters to function in a healthy way, is so very like the absence of nurturing many people feel in their youth. To anyone who has experienced life at its worst growing up, these caricatures of the real world provide a powerful sense of being seen. There is something radical about a story that isn’t written with any other moral than “ this living in society shit sucks”. That speaks to people, and continues to speak to me. ZaDr has always smacked of tragedy, in that you know things will end badly for everyone involved, but it’s still impossible to look away as everything is set ablaze. Two headstrong protagonists, locked in a battle of opposing wills and addictive delusion. It makes the sweetness sweeter, it makes the pains of grand fantasy ache deeper, knowing that these two characters are ultimately fighting losing battles for pitiful reasons.The denial of personal failure, the stubbornness to find purpose. In all of reality, all they truly have is each other. To see that dynamic and ship them is to say that love is possible even in the most dire of circumstances. Time and time again I find myself returning to ZaDr. I think something about the dynamic speaks to the part of us that knows things are wrong and that the fight against it is worthwhile. And that struggle, while futile, can still hold a tremendous amount of personal importance. It speaks to failing, and having the strength to get back up to try again. No matter the odds. For a pairing hated by its own creator, the fixation that Zim and Dib have on each other is an undeniable magnetism seen by the fandom since the launch of the cartoon, all the way back in 2001. This ship has staying power, and after over two decades has failed to fall into total obscurity.  Those touched by its effects have gone on to create resonant, deeply meaningful works. This blog, and the posts that I make on the topic, are my way of giving back to the ZaDr community. By displaying the stories of triumph and tragedy put forward by the IZ community, I hope to welcome new fans and give back to long standing fans by providing a living archive and blog space. like if you take the “Zim is a kid in the show” stance then child zadr seems so weird the second you age up the characters at all. Cuz it takes so long for irkens to age the equivalent of one human year (aka dib would be 22 by the time Zim ages ‘one’ year)

or if you take the opposite stance, you can’t have zadr and the show at the same time (which is sad bc the show so good??? hate leaving it out of anything)

new headcanon: ZIM is physically/mentally in his early to mid twenties (in IRKEN years) since thats how old Jhonen was when he created him and Jhonen has gone on record to say that ZIM was conceived as a representation of the negative characteristics of his adult self conflicting with his former child self (Dib). Probably also why he hates ZADR so much

Hey! Its completly fine that you dont like zadr, its really understandable and i can understand your points. But saying zim is a canonical adult isnt really fair since we cant truly take everything Jhonen says as factual canon, he also said that Zim x Gaz wouldve happened if there were to be a canon romance- implying Zim is not in fact an adult. I am totally against adult x minor ships and if Zim were no doubt shown to be an adult or adult-coded character the ship would be unacceptable, though it in reality is very vague and does not have a set canon. I dont ship ZADR either, but theres no need to put those (who are mostly young people) on the same level as bad people like proshippers when the canon itself is very vague.

Ok fine if we disregard what Jhonen says it's STILL a HUGE STRETCH not to consider Zim an adult. He's stated to be over 50 years old in Tak the Hideous New Girl.

If Irkens just age really slowly, that means Dib is going to be an adult while Zim is still a child. Seems like its fucked up either way to me.

The whole point of shunning adult/child ships is that they can be used to groom real children. If zadr can be so easily interpreted as adult/child (see: Zim stated as being over 50 years old), it could be just as easily used for grooming. In this case I really think Zim is read as adult commonly enough that it should be discouraged like a more conclusively adult/child ship.

That said I'm not sending death threats to kids about this and I never will. But it's still important to point out that its potentially dangerous and might be used by predators as a tool of manipulation. IMO that's MORE reason to discourage kids from getting into it, in like a normal and reasonable way.

Also. There's still more within the text of the show that codes Zim as an emotionally immature adult.

The show's core philosophy is less coherent overall if Zim is a child. IZ LOVES making fun of the fact that children are forced to rely on/have their world shaped by adults who can be just as ignorant and petty and stupid as other children are.

Why would the vaguely-aged but clearly-socially-independent and ignorant protagonist be an exception?

The Irkens also become much less of a scathing critique of the childish shortsightedness and stubbornness of fascist fanatacism if he's not an adult. IZ seems like a show that would go out of its way to make fun of a reliance on child soldiers if thats what the Irkens were doing.

I get it if you were into zadr as a kid but it's ridiculous not to let it go. They can be frenemies and still get into all kinds of wacky hijinks.
